A phase 3 study showed that combining pelabresib with ruxolitinib significantly improved spleen volume reduction and symptom relief in myelofibrosis patients compared to ruxolitinib alone, offering a promising new treatment option. Long-term use of gantenerumab may delay Alzheimer's dementia onset in individuals with inherited Alzheimer's, supporting the amyloid hypothesis and paving the way for future prevention strategies. Phase 3 trials demonstrated that povorcitinib, an oral JAK1 inhibitor, significantly improved clinical outcomes in adults with moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa, potentially offering a new treatment option. Research linked red meat allergy to bites from additional tick species, expanding the geographic risk area and highlighting the need for clinicians to consider this diagnosis in patients with unexplained allergic symptoms following tick bites.

To close out this series on prayer, we delve into the raw honesty of Jeremiah's lament in Lamentations 3 and Jesus' anguish in Gethsemane. These biblical accounts reveal that it's okay to struggle with God's will and express our pain to Him. We learn that being godly doesn't mean always feeling okay or having a positive attitude. Instead, true faith allows us to bring our burdens, confusion, and even anger to God. The message emphasizes the difference between isolation and solitude in our spiritual journey. While isolation can be dangerous, solitude with God can be transformative. This teaching encourages us to run to the Father with our problems rather than away from them. Ultimately, we're reminded that God's love is steadfast, His mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness endures even in our darkest valleys. This message challenges us to be honest in our prayers and to cling to hope, even when we can't feel or see God's presence.
“Primary care physicians are your first line of defense against cancer,” said Matthew Farrell, M.D., an Ohio State Wexner Medical Center primary care physician and a clinical associate professor of family and community medicine. Prevention, screenings and early detection are crucial and begins with a patient's family history with cancer and other medical issues. “We are thorough and ask about their first-degree relatives, their parents, siblings and children, and their secondary relatives, such as grandparents and aunts and uncles,” Farrell said. “If I see a pattern, a certain number of relatives with the same cancer, especially at an early age, there could be a genetic factor.” A patient with an inherited genetic mutation will then be screened at an earlier age and more often. Dr. Farrell also talked about the importance of children receiving the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that prevents certain types of cancer. He examines patients to detect skin cancer and melanoma in the early stages. “Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and it's personal for me; my mother was diagnosed with melanoma three times … and she's doing fine.” Breast cancer and prostate cancer are two of the most common forms of cancer. Dr. Farrell discussed when women should begin getting yearly mammograms, and why and when men should begin to undergo regular Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests. Men and women without a family history of colorectal cancer should get their first colonoscopy at 45. “My brother-in-law was 52 when he had his first colonoscopy,” Dr. Farrell said. “They found a large tumor in his colon; it was removed, and he's been cancer free for 20 years now.” Lung cancer screenings are relatively new and recommended for long-time smokers. They are vital because “if you wait until there are symptoms it's very hard to treat and cure,” Dr. Farrell said, adding “I'm fortunate to be part of the Ohio State system and the James where we have experts and specialists for every type of cancer and medical issue my patients have.”

In this episode of The SHEA Podcast, Dr. Maroya Walters moderates an engaging discussion on the Colorado Antimicrobial Stewardship Endeavor (CASE), a collaborative between the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Children's Hospital Colorado. CASE supports hospitals across Colorado in implementing the CDC's Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs to combat antimicrobial resistance. Guests include Dr. Lauren Biehle, Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Lead; Dr. Michael Bozzella, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Physician; and Dr. Joana Dimo, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellow. They share how CASE has grown from 17 hospitals in 2021 to 42 hospitals today, offering mentorship, workshops, and evidence-based tools like the Firstline app and CARE PATH adherence tools. Key topics include CASE's origins in a statewide needs assessment, the roles of public health departments and hospitals in driving stewardship, and initiatives supporting rural and critical access hospitals through the CASE Collective. The team highlights the collaborative's measurable impact on antibiotic use and patient outcomes and shares plans to expand their reach to underserved populations. The episode concludes with practical advice for hospital epidemiologists and public health professionals looking to develop similar collaboratives. Interested in learning more? HT2060 - The First Line, the First Paragraph Novelists and short story writers understand perfectly well the importance of that first line or paragraph of text. In fact, the subsequent pages are often a confirmation or refutation of that first line, at the very least an explanation of it. We have the same sort of thing in photography projects in the form of a title and the introductory text.
The return of the one and only Justin McWilliams! I was looking forward to all that we planned to talk about and was not disappointed! The first due engine, the priority of the first line, reports of victims. Helmet cams: editing, posting & commenting. Textbooks! Social Media vs. phone call vs. face to face. Lessons from instructing, the impact of decision makers in your organization, and of course the caveat always holds... the audience is who actually determines the rabbit holes that we deep dive into!
