Julaine Appling is president of Wisconsin Faithful and President Emeritus of Wisconsin Family Council. On April 1st, Wisconsin will be holding a critical Supreme Court election. As Jim demonstrated by presenting several headlines, this election will not only affect Wisconsin, but every state in the nation. Why is that? Julaine responded to that question by noting that in 2023, the Wisconsin Supreme Court flipped from 4-3 conservative to 4-3 liberal with the election of Janet Protasiewicz. So since August 1st of 2023, the court has been acting in a liberal, judicial activist type of mode. Now we have the April election coming up where Brad Schimel is facing off against Susan Crawford in what amounts to the filling of an open seat as liberal justice Ann Walsh Bradley has decided not to seek reelection. This means that if Schimel wins, the court reverts back to 4-3 conservative and if Crawford wins, it remains 4-3 liberal.Julaine believes the reason for the national attention is that liberals like what they've been able to accomplish with this court. One item concerns the redrawing of the state legislative maps in a way that favors Democrats. Also, Julaine indicated that there's a lawsuit waiting to be filed that would challenge the legality of Wisconsin's congressional maps.If you look at the U.S. House of Representatives, Republicans have only a 4 vote majority (218-214) with 3 vacant seats. So Democrats believe if they can get the current Wisconsin Supreme Court to stay liberal, and file a lawsuit challenging the legality of our constitutional maps forcing new ones that favor liberals, that could flip at least two seats.

Mary welcomes Julaine Appling back to the podcast to talk about citizenry at the local level. With a plethora of headlines of late related to a federal swamp draining of immense proportions, what is going on in the states? While we focus a lot on Wisconsin in these programs, many states have or will have to deal with similar issues. Today we look at how Governor Evers continues to change the landscape here with his attempts to move away from a representative form of government, something every blue state citizen should be concerned about. Then we look at "baby boxes" and this much-needed pro-life move to protect newborns. Also on the docket, "demographic winter" - what it means when a generation chooses pursuit of self to the exclusion of raising the next generation. Finally, a look at 2025 elections, because, those annoying ads are back already! Julaine serves Wisconsin Family Council as president emeritus. Wisconsin Family Council, organized in 1986, is the only organization in Wisconsin dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the natural family. In addition to pushback, what are the options for keeping obscenity out of the public square?   Also, with schools re-opening soon, what are some changes we can expect and what are release-time laws?  Also on the podcast: what are the ramifictions of the Wisconsin Supreme Court election outcome back in April? With the inauguration of our newest justice, expect changes because elections have consequences and we need to stay awake as the voting public. Called to Care: Africa Exchange (2023)

Our first Called to CARE session for 2023 begins like a dinner conversation among friends. In this podcast, AfricaExchange.org co-founders and co-directors, Sam and Melody Harrell, share how their Baptist American-African lives led them to become global leaders in “integrated” sustainable development... “I am blown a-Way.” (Rev. Jimi Calhoun, co-host, legendary musician, author and pastor)Sam and Melody are saving lives and ending poverty with education and holistic, community care. Now celebrating their 25th year, AfricaExchange (AE) has built 14 “integrated child development” preschools in Kenya's most-isolated / least-resourced regions. AE's projects are providing and fostering nutrition, clean water, education, sanitation and infrastructure, jobs, job training, Creation care and restoration, and more, on an ongoing basis in these places to help these children and their communities defeat poverty. Meet. Notice. Exchange. Serve. AfricaExchange's model is rooted in the best of Christianity's and Africa's worldviews. As the children of Baptist missionaries in Africa, Sam and Melody's foundational insight is that CARING FOR OTHERS means: listening, noticing, and being empathetic before acting. AfricaExchange helps communities build upward-spiraling personal and collective assets which benefit the whole community and their local biosphere. AE is exemplar in their work. This podcast is worth multiple listenings for those interested in “learning the lessons that will propel us forward.” (Sam Harrell)#############About our guests • Melody Harrell, spiritual director, AfricaExchange.org • Sam Harrell, executive director, AfricaExchange.org • Rev. Jimi Calhoun, pastor, BridgingAustin.org, author/musician, JimiCalhoun.com • Rev. Julaine Calhoun, pastor, BridgingAustin.org • Chris Searles, director, BioIntegrity.net, exec. editor, AllCreation.org About this seriesIn this time of polarizations and extremes we seem to be going to our Media for answers, and yet our Media is not designed or intended to give us answers. Media is a business (not a healer). Looking honestly at today's shared social challenges, all indicators indicate it is Care through kinship, attention, gentleness, safety, honesty, support, process, nurturing, love, detail, nutrition, structure, generosity, time, etc. — that humans today need most to overcome our current complex, human-made crises. What can More CARE do for modern people? Our guests are asked to share about the effectiveness of greater care for all in the living Creation through greater empathy, mutuality, relationship, conversation, listening, hearing, seeing, connecting, processing, balancing, healing, and nurturing of ourselves, each other, Earth's biodiversity, and “the environment.” #############REFERENCESR.D. In this episode, Julaine talks with Courtney Gamston, professor of the practice of experiential education at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University. Julaine worked at the Harrison School as an instructional designer and faculty developer before coming to Vanderbilt, and she knew that her former colleague Courtney had some very interesting experiences teaching during the pandemic. Courtney works with pharmacy students who are just starting to enter clinical practice settings, helping them apply what they've been learning in their pharmacy courses to real patients. Given the work Courtney's students do in clinical settings, the 2020 transition to remote teaching and learning meant she and her colleagues had to rethink how they taught their courses. In the interview, Courtney shares some of the methods she used to keep pharmacy education experiential during the pandemic and mentions a few changes to the course that worked out so well they'll persist when classes return to traditional settings. We veered off of the Church in Corinth Teaching Series this week and Pastor Josh's wife Julaine joined him to give a reminding message (a revelation for some) of God's providence and sovereignty. Habakkuk was discussed as an example of not only God being in control, but also our tendency to murmur and forget who He is in our “finite” thinking. His ways are infinite as He is infinite. He is Lord and Creator of all. In that truth we find peace. We actually find that in the moments we are struggling and hard pressed, we are in a position to allow God to show us our pride, which we need to seek Him out to have removed. This is a blessing for us as His children. We read out of 2 Corinthians 12 and also Ephesians 6. Enjoy the message and prayers for your hearts to be evaluated and for you to draw closer to God which in return draws Him closer to you.

In October 2020, Stephen Kosslyn published a new book called Active Learning Online: Five Principles that Make Online Courses Come Alive. The book draws on Kosslyn’s experiences at Minerva, but also his very long and impressive career in higher education. He is the founder, president emeritus, and chief academic officer of Foundry College, which provides high-quality, research-informed online education for working adults. He’s also the founder and president of Active Learning Sciences, a consulting group that help institutions adopt active learning principles in online education. Prior to that, he was founding dean and chief academic officer at the Minerva Schools at the Keck Graduate Institute. And that all came after an amazing career as a professor of psychology at Harvard University and Stanford University. We have a great interview with Stephen Kosslyn to share with you. He recently facilitated a virtual workshop here at Vanderbilt on his new book, and we took the opportunity to talk with him for the podcast. You’ll hear a new voice in this interview: Julaine Fowlin, the Vanderbilt Center for Teaching’s new assistant director for instructional design. Julaine helped organized Stephen’s workshop, and she had a lot of great questions to ask him about his book. Kosslyn goes through his five principles for active learning, offers practical strategies for implementing these principles in the virtual classroom, and speaks to the important role motivation plays in learning. On Let The Journey Begin, we like to bring on individuals who have endured all different kinds of trauma, because many times the experiences and symptoms can overlap. Our guest this week, singer/songwriter, blogger, public speaker, and mental health advocate, Cami Julaine, definitely has one of those stories. Cami grew up wanting to be a singer, but abuse at an early age changed the way she lived her life. After multiple occasions of this traumatic abuse, she began to develop OCD, which then turned into severe anorexia, which eventually evolved into bulimia, so bad to the point Cami thought she may die. At age 16, Cami received help from a mentor who had gone through similar struggles and helped put life into perspective. Nearly a decade later, Cami explains what has helped her continue down her recovery path, including a daily routine, productivity, and an accountability mentor. She also mentions how important it was for her to let go of any perceived judgement that may come with taking medication. Although life is much better today than it was years ago, Cami describes how important her getting help was and how her recovery is continually a work in progress.
