Hi there, and welcome back to another episode. Today’s episode is a really personal one. It started with a moment I didn’t expect. One that was emotional, beautiful, and deeply reflective all at once. It happened this morning as I said goodbye to my son - heading off on his very first solo business trip. And in that moment, I found myself reflecting not just on his journey, but on my own. I realised I was witnessing something powerful. The result of years of dreaming, trusting, and continuing even when I wasn’t sure. So in today’s episode, I want to share that reflection with you. Because what came up for me is something I have seen over and over again, both in my own life and through coaching women around the world. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode: Why getting truly clear on what you want changes everything What it really means to do the work, even when it’s not easy The powerful role your environment plays in shaping your future This episode is a gentle but honest reminder that your dream life is not something that happens by chance. It’s something you choose and create. If you've been feeling stuck, unsure, or like you are capable of more, I think this conversation might be exactly what you need right now. So take a moment for yourself and come and listen. There is something here for you. As always, I’d LOVE to hear what resonated most with you - so please share and let’s keep the conversation going in the Dream Life Podcast Facebook Group here. When it's calm, everything becomes clear." Three key takeaways you can expect from this episode: Why feeling constantly busy does not equal being productive or present How stillness can improve your clarity, decision-making and energy A simple daily practice to help you feel calm, focused and intentional Listen in and discover how a simple moment of stillness can help you move closer to living your dream life with more intention and ease. As always, I’d LOVE to hear what resonated most with you - so please share and let’s keep the conversation going in the Dream Life Podcast Facebook Group here. Today’s episode is one I’ve been so excited to share with you. I sat down with neuroscientist, author and speaker TJ Power, and we explored something that feels both incredibly simple… and completely life changing. What if feeling better didn’t require a big life overhaul? What if the key to more motivation, calm, connection and happiness is already inside you… just waiting to be activated? In this conversation, we dive into what TJ calls The Dose Effect – understanding the four key brain chemicals that shape how you feel every single day, and how small, intentional habits can completely transform your life. What I love about TJ’s work is that it comes from lived experience. He’s not just teaching this – he’s lived it, struggled with it, and found a way through it. And that makes his insights even more powerful. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, distracted, or just not quite yourself… this episode will give you practical, simple tools to start shifting that today. Take a walk, grab a journal, or simply sit and listen… this one might just change how you live your everyday life. Join my workshop - How to stop feeling rushed, and finally feel ahead of your life. Welcome to another short but empowering episode of Monday Motivation, giving you a dose of inspiration as you head into your week... Today, we explore Viktor Frankl’s powerful reminder that between what happens to us and how we respond, there is a space where our power, growth and freedom live: 'Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.' Three key takeaways: Why the pause between stimulus and response is one of the most powerful tools you have in everyday life How to respond with greater intention when life feels overwhelming, uncertain or emotionally charged A simple practice to help you move from reacting on autopilot to choosing with calm, grace and self-leadership Listen in and discover how one conscious breath can help you respond in a way that moves you closer to living your dream life, whatever that means to you. If you've been feeling a little stretched, distracted, overwhelmed or even like life is moving so fast that you're barely in it, this episode is for you. Today I am talking about presence, not as some perfect, polished idea, but as a real practice we can all return to, especially when life feels full, messy, uncertain or hard. I share why being present is not about pretending everything is okay, and why true mindfulness is actually about being honest with what you are feeling and learning how to come back to yourself again and again. In this episode, I also walk you through some of the simple practices that have helped me the most over the years. They're not complicated, and they don't require you to change your whole life overnight. They are gentle, powerful tools that can help you feel calmer, clearer and more grounded in your everyday life. So if you've been craving more calm, more clarity and more space to breathe, I really think this conversation will support you. There's something about journaling that I have loved for most of my adult life, and today’s episode is all about why this simple practice is so incredibly powerful. Lately I have been diving deep into the science behind it, and what I found made me even more passionate about sharing this with you. In this episode, we explore: Why journaling is so much more than just writing your thoughts on paper. How can help you get clear on your dreams, reduce stress, process emotions, improve focus, and support your physical wellbeing. How I use journaling as a daily practice to move through overwhelm and stay grounded. Be inspired to start journaling, or to start again. You don't need the perfect notebook, a complicated system or lots of time. You simply need a pen, a page and a few minutes. And if you have ever wondered whether journaling could really make a difference in your life, this episode has the answer. Listen in and discover how a few quiet minutes each morning can help you make more intentional choices and move closer to living your dream life, whatever that means to you. This is one of those conversations that will truly stay with you. A few years ago, I wrote my book Your Dream Life Starts Here, and one of my biggest dreams has always been to inspire as many people as possible to write down their dreams and go after them. It still really touches me when people say, "you're probably sick of hearing this, but you book changed my life." So when I recently came across a beautiful story on LinkedIn from someone who said my book had helped her create her dream life, I was touched and curious. That someone is Nienke, and what she's done is incredible. She didn’t just dream. She made it happen. In this episode, we talk about what it really takes to move from dreaming to doing. We talk about courage, taking small steps, and saying yes even when it feels uncomfortable. Four key takeaways: Why writing your dreams down is more powerful than you think How small, brave actions can completely change your life Why stepping outside your comfort zone is where the magic happens How to create a life that gives you both freedom and meaning If you have a dream sitting quietly in your heart, this episode is for you. Because your dream is not random. It's there for a reason. So take a moment, get comfortable, and let this conversation inspire you to take that first step. As always, I’d LOVE to hear what resonated most with you - so please share and let’s keep the conversation going in the Dream Life Podcast Facebook Group here. Cal Newport wrote the book titled "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World." I have been talking about this idea of shallow thinking and how damaging it is to humanity. In 2016, Cal Newport discussed the idea of shallow work. The concepts go hand-in-hand. Join me this week for a deeper dive into what deep work is and why it is more important than ever. Vandaag bespreken we het boek Slow Productivity van Cal Newport. Ondertitel: De kunst van presteren zonder burn-out Engelse titel: Slow Productivity: The lost art of accomplishment without burnout Calvin C. Newport is an American nonfiction author and full-time professor of computer science at Georgetown University. Eerdere boeken: A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload (NL: Bevrijd!) Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World - (NL: Digitaal minimalisme) Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (meer dan 1.5 miljoen verkocht) (NL: Diep werk) The Time-Block Planner: A Daily Method for Deep Work in a Distracted World So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love (meer dan 350k verkocht) How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get into College by Standing Out (Without Burning Out) How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less (meer dan 200k verkocht) How to Win at College: Surprising Secrets for Success from the Country's Top Students Het is duidelijk dat Cal een onderwerp heeft gevonden waar veel behoefte aan is in de wereld. He blijft uiteindelijk gaan om productiviteit.

We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads). How can we improve productivity by prioritizing deep work? Helping others harness productivity while using their natural strengths has been a big focus for me over the years — it's what led me to create The Strengths Journal™. When thinking about the theme of self-development in the area of productivity, I'm inspired by Cal Newport's book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. Newport defines deep work as “the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task.” In our distraction-heavy digital age, Newport emphasizes the importance of creating space for deep concentration. His book highlights the impact of focused work on both productivity and quality output. To find out more about my work, please visit Dana Williams Consulting. LinkedIn. Instagram. Three years removed from those eerie and strange days of the early pandemic, one thing that strikes us is how much time we seemed to have then. People were picking up hobbies, slow cooking elaborate meals on the groceries they could get. People found their jobs that used to keep them late at the office could be finished in a couple hours. People were reading philosophy and zipping through books. There was no business travel, no long days on the road. The days blurred into each other, but there seemed to be infinite space for chatting with friends and family over Zoom, catching up on TV series we missed. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. But it sure felt like there was a lot of time.Today, with life back to ‘normal,' all that seems very far away.---Andy in today's Daily Stoic excerpt reading, Ryan discusses why holding your attention on what really matters in a world full of media that is constantly trying to pull it away is a crucial part of maintaining a happy and healthy.
Deep WorkDeep Work Full Chapter Brief The rapid development of Internet technology and smart products has provided people with a lot of convenience. Meanwhile, all kinds of notifications and messages mean people's working time has become highly fragmented. The author keenly points out that more than 60% of knowledge workers' work time is spent on shallow work. This type of work not only yields limited output value but also permanently reduces people's capacity to work deeply! This book describes how to train the brain to eliminate distractions, improve deep work ability, and create more value. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today, we will unlock the book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. If you probe into the experiences of some prominent figures in history, you will find that deep work is pivotal to their success in their respective fields. American author Mark Twain's masterpiece, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was mostly done in a shed at the Quarry Farm in New York. His workplace, the shed was so far from the main house where his family lived that they had to call him to dinner by blowing a horn. The theoretical physicist Peter Higgs worked in a nearly secluded environment and refused to use a computer. When Higgs won the Nobel Prize, journalists couldn't even locate him. The novelist J.K. Rowling would stay away from social media while writing Harry Potter. For the first year and a half after opening her Twitter account, she posted only one tweet: "This is the real me, but you won't be hearing from me often I'm afraid, as pen and paper is my priority at the moment." Unlike these highly influential figures, more and more knowledge workers are straying away from deep work. FranklinCovey, a company specializing in training to improve organizational and personal effectiveness, has tracked more than 350,000 employees worldwide. According to its findings, these employees have wasted 40% of their work time on things that don't matter. In this speed first web-centric era, people have embraced the Internet and remain instantly connected. Knowledge workers dedicate most of their work time to emails, meetings, and social media, yet their essential tasks have been delayed. In this business environment, how can we yield valuable results and stand out in the workplace? In an age of highly fragmented working time, the approach to deep work proposed in Deep Work makes even more sense. It helps ordinary people become the winners of today's age. In the meantime, we can get gratification from deep work. While arguing for the importance of deep work, Deep Work also provides a systematic way to train our brains to eliminate distractions. Furthermore, the book helps us improve our ability to think deeply and thus create more value. The author, Cal Newport, received his Ph.D. in computer science from MIT and is currently an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University. He is also a bestselling author. Besides this book, Newport's bestselling works also include How to Win at College: Surprising Secrets for Success from the Country's Top Students, How to Become a Straight-A Student, How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get into College by Standing Out, and So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. He is also the founder of the popular blog Study Hacks, which is dedicated to decoding success patterns in work and study. In this Bookey session, we will look at how ordinary people can be the winners of our time by looking at the following three parts: Part One: Why do we need deep...

Everyone loves ketchup – or so it seems. In fact, it is one of the most universally loved foods in America. Why? This episode begins with some interesting facts and history about ketchup that helps explain why there is a bottle of it in more than 97% of U.S. households. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/aug/20/why-is-ketchup-so-delicious-science-answers-big-food-questions Have you ever felt you were on a winning streak? Maybe it was at work or gambling or a game of tennis – where you just could do no wrong. You often see winning streaks in professional sports. Interestingly, some people claim that winning streaks aren't really a thing. However, my guest believes otherwise and in fact we can all learn how to do anything better by understanding how winning streaks work. Here to explain is Ben Cohen is a sports reporter for The Wall Street Journal and author of the book, The Hot Hand: The Mystery and Science of Streaks (https://amzn.to/32gobSl). I bet some English teacher somewhere during your education told you that you should never end a sentence with a preposition. However, following that rule can be difficult as any writer knows because it makes for awkward sentences. So, is it really a rule and where did it come from? Listen as I explain whether you should really bother to follow that rule.
