In 1960 Paul Kashaku, a farmer with a small farmstead in the hill country, claimed that he had a vision. In this vision, his deceased daughter Evangelista had appeared to him and foretold that he would be visited by “apparitions from heaven”. This came to fruition in 1988 when he said that he had been visited by St Joseph, Mary and Jesus. He claimed that they had tasked him to use his land near the city of Kanungu, as a gathering place for believers. Kanungu is a town in the western region of Uganda about 404km from the capital Kampala. This town has now become infamous, and you will hear why later in the story. March 17th, 2021 marks the 21st anniversary of the infamous Kanungu tragedy, in which the cult known as the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God murdered hundreds of its followers in a burning church. What have Christians in East Africa learned in the generation since this event? Both the church and the general public are still highly vulnerable, and evidence of our crisis of discernment is everywhere. This statement by Rodgers Atwebembeire, director of the Africa Centre for Apologetics Research, is a challenge to make vigilance and discipleship our legacy.

Tonight, it's a Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust Special Edition!  For this episode I spoke to 3 different scholars, Georgina Crayford, Jenna Ross, and Tim Downes, and asked them all about their Nuffield experiences, and why they’d recommend it to others. Joseph came from a Catholic background, had run for political office in '80 and had a positive image in the community... until he met a woman named Credonia in 1989. Joseph, Credonia, and a few other fellow cult leaders formed a group called the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments.
