At the birth of Christ, the sovereign Lord used his human means of Joseph and Mary to fulfil his purpose. Mary's betrothed and eventual husband Joseph, was a good and godly man, whom God used in the life of his incarnated Son. He was a righteous man who raised Jesus in a righteous manner. As we consider Matthew 1:18–25, we consider three truths about Joseph and how God used him: 1. Joseph's Trial (vv. 18–19) 2. Joseph's Task (vv. 20–23) 3. Joseph's Trust (vv. 24–25)

Part 13: No Ordinary Joe
Joseph acted with the utmost integrity. What did that get him? It landed him in a dungeon prison on a trumped-up attempted rape charge, a charge that he could not fight because he was just a lowly Hebrew slave with no voice or rights in the empire. However, instead of spending all of his time retelling the story of how he had been messed over, pleading his innocence, or wallowing in toxic emotions, he got busy serving other people. Join us as we continue to learn from this man of remarkable faith.
One thing you need to know about God is that He is all about reconciliation. His great desire is for people to be reconciled to Him and reconciled to one another. This is why Jesus, God in flesh, came. He defeated the evil one through his death to begin the restoration of the perfect harmony that existed in the garden. This work will come to full completion when Jesus returns to usher in the New Heavens and New Earth where we will take our place at the banquet table in fully reconciled relationships with our brothers and sisters of all nations and our triune God. As we wait for that day to come, God works in the here and now to reconcile people whose relationships appears irreparable. Hear the perfect ending to Joseph's story.
Joseph was no overnight success, but his life changed dramatically overnight. How did that happen? How did a Hebrew slave rise to such a prominent position in the Egyptian empire? His life changed overnight because he trusted the God who is powerful enough to move people into the positions and places He wants them to be. What God did in Joseph's life, He can do in yours. He can change your life dramatically overnight.
If anyone knew what it was to go through crises it was Joseph. He went from a favorite son in the house of his father Jacob to just another slave in a foreign household. Yet, he not only withstood the crises, he thrived in his new environment. All credit goes to God for Joseph's success, but Joseph experienced God's favor in large part because of how he handled the situation.
Knowing God has a dream for each one of us also gives us reason to be excited about life. To bounce instead of roll out of bed in the morning. Life can feel awfully mundane at times (just as I am sure it did for Joseph all those days he was out shepherding flocks), but it is never free of anticipation when you realize God is moving and working out his great dream/plan for your life.
One of the greatest gifts we can give future generations is to deal with and end family/societal dysfunction in whatever shape or form it comes in. When it comes to favoritism we may not all agree to what extent it exists in our family/country, but let's show the courage and resolve to address whatever inequality is still present.

I've been reading the Gospel Christmas stories since I was a kid (and that's a long time). I've been preaching the Gospel Christmas stories for 35+ years, the same ol stories! And yet to be honest, they never get old. What we celebrate at Christmas is so wondrously holy. And even though there isn't a single gospel Christmas story that I haven't heard and preached on multiple times, one of the things that I love about scripture is the way the Spirit of God uses the Word of God to speak a fresh word to us.I'm praying the Spirit will use the story of Joseph, just an ordinary Joe, to do that for each of us.

Welcome to March 27th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a regular Joe and a spicy history. Ordinary Joe, Joe Sixpack, Joe Blow, Joe Schmoe, Average Joe...did you ever wonder if other cultures have their own "Joes"? These Joe terms are used primarily in North America to refer to a completely average person but there are parallel terms in other languages such as Old Mate in Australia, Herr und Frau Osterreicher in Austria (meaning Mr and Mrs Austria), Israel Israeli in, you guessed it, Israel and even Tizio, Caio e Sempronio in Italy, the equivalent of Tom, Dick and Harry! It seems that pretty much everyone around the world has their own way to refer to their own Average Joe. On National Joe Day take your pick of what it means to be you. The Spanish rice dish known as Paella, has an interesting history. Rice was first brought to Spain by the Moors around 1,200 years ago. Because of this, the word for rice or arroz does not come from Latin, but rather from Arabic. Then there’s the word paella itself which refers to the pan in which the meal is cooked. The word comes from the old French for pan or paelle. Are you following along? Good. Because there’s more. Some people claim that the word paella is a contraction of para ella, which means for her, because the man who supposedly came up with the recipe did so for his love. Celebrate National Spanish Paella Day with this uniquely delicious dish and its spicy history. I’m Anna Devere and I’m Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. We had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Hollander Zoom video!Sam Hollander has spent thirty years trudging through the peaks and valleys of a songwriting career. Music lovers spanning generations and genres will find stories about many of their heroes and industry icons. 21-Hit Wonder is one part chronicle of a songwriter's storied career and another part love letter to anyone who has been counted out—from no-hit wonders and one-hit wonders to the novelties and the never-beens—and just needs a bit of inspiration to persevere. This week's episode is the second of a two part series about guns in America, a conversation between two people with very different feelings about the issue. Melanie Jeffcoat is an actor, filmmaker and gun control activist who lives in Alabama. Jon Godfrey is a retired law enforcement officer who's a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and lives in upstate New York. In 2018 they were part of Guns: An American Conversation, a collaboration between TIME Magazine and a consortium of local media outlets that brought together 21 people with wide ranging views on gun control for a two-day discussion. Despite their opposing views, Jon and Melanie developed a friendship that has transcended their differences, though they still do plenty of arguing. In this final half of this interivew, Jon explains what those who aren't “gun people” don't understand about guns and Melanie and Meghan both admit there's a lot they don't understand. He and Melanie also talk about their overall sense of personal safety in the world and how they handle concerns like home invasion. Jon explains why he often carries a firearm and what he sees as the uses of owning assault style guns. Melanie reflects on a shooting that occurred at her high school when she was a student and wonders how much worse things would have been if the shooter had used an AR-15 instead of a pistol. Finally, Jon and Melanie talk about what sorts of legislative compromises might be possible on guns and what they think lawmakers could learn from them if they only asked. Guest Bios: Melanie Jeffcoat received her MFA in Acting from the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of Washington in Seattle and has worked around the country in theater and film. Her acting credits include “All My Children,” “Ordinary Joe” and “The Wonder Years.” Her producing, directing and writing credits include "Man in the Glass: The Dale Brown Story,” “Gip,” and Open Secret,” which won the Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Politics on Film Festival in Washington, D.C. Melanie is co-founder of Chaotic Good Improv in Birmingham, Alabama and is a volunteer with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She lives near Birmingham, Alabama Jon Godfrey worked in law enforcement for several decades, serving as Deputy County Sheriff in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, a criminal investigator in Kansas and Chief of Police for the US Dept. Of Veterans Affairs Police Service in Syracuse, New York. A retired army veteran, he lives in a rural area outside Syracuse, New York.
Join us as we talk with Joey Porchetta about things like lacrosse, covid weddings, tattoos and his road of recovery and redemption. Of course, there are some sprinkles too!!!

Melanie Jeffcoat is an actor, filmmaker and gun control activist who lives in Alabama. Jon Godfrey is a retired law enforcement officer who's a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and lives in upstate New York. In this part of this conversation, Jon and Melanie talk about how their backgrounds shaped their feelings about guns and compare and contrast their reactions to the May 24 school shooting in Uvalde,Texas. While Melanie is perplexed as to why anyone would need something like an AR-15, Jon explains why he owns such weapons and why he advocates for proper training and better mental health screenings rather than restrictions on the guns themselves. Above all, they talk about how they came to know one another. In 2018 they were part of Guns: An American Conversation, a collaboration between TIME Magazine and a consortium of local media outlets that brought together 21 people with wide ranging views on gun control for a two-day discussion. Do you ever wonder how to connect with people who aren't in your age bracket? Is it necessary to reach out to other age groups with the gospel? And do you ever think about how you can meet the many needs of the vastly diverse people in your community? Our guest for today's edition is Joe Hobday - a youth pioneer - who's learnt how to reach out to the young people in his neighbourhood. In fact, Joe is determined that all the people of his community will know God's love as he works on ways to provide for both their practical and spiritual needs. Joe shares about the restoration project he's heading up for his church parish - something which literally embodies the words of Isaiah 61; shares how he's bringing mixed age groups of people together around one mission; and gives us a fresh perspective on a popular song from a modern-day musical. The surprising and insightful angle will give you pause for thought and you'll probably never listen to the song in the same way again. Joe's humility and enthusiasm are infectious, and you'll be sure to be moved to action after listening to his chat with host, Sharon Tedford. Presented by Sharon Tedford. Produced by Gary Dell. It's hard to know what the editors think their reader is doing in November 1988, based on the issue's fashion and style content. Is she dressing drably for a job? Visiting the Southwest (again) in suede? Attending a formal girls-only party? Maybe all three in succession! At least the hair story suggests pleasantly un-fussy styles...not that you can really see them in the photos. We also learn about the coming sunflower invasion, how to even out your eyelashes, what perfume is, and much much more! Roll your hair up -- or don't -- and join us!QUICK LINKS
