Avec notre collègue Lucnise Duquereste du site Ayibopost, nous évoquons la situation de plus en plus difficile à Cap-Haïtien, dans le nord du pays. Face à l'insécurité qui gagne du terrain ailleurs, de nombreux Haïtiens fuient vers Cap-Haïtien, perçue comme une zone plus sûre. Selon la journaliste d'Ayibopost, de nouvelles familles arrivent chaque semaine à Cap Haïtien, mais la ville n'a pas les capacités d'accueillir autant de monde. L'exode fait grimper les prix des loyers qui ont doublé, voire triplé dans certains quartiers. Beaucoup de familles doivent s'installer en périphérie, dans des zones peu équipées, souligne Lucnise Duquereste. Mais ce n'est pas seulement le logement qui devient un luxe : l'eau et la nourriture coûtent désormais beaucoup plus cher. Même les produits de base sont plus difficiles à trouver, les prix augmentent chaque semaine, selon notre confrère d'Ayibopost. We praten vandaag met Jan Pronk. Hij voer, toen hij economie studeerde in Rotterdam mee op de Henry Dunant, het vakantieschip voor gehandicapten van het Nederlandse Rode Kruis. Wellicht is daar zijn belangstelling voor het internationaal en humanitair oorlogsrecht al gewekt. In 1966 werd hij actief in de PvdA, eerst op lokaal en daarna op landelijk niveau. Hij was minister in vier kabinetten, van Ontwikkelingssamenwerking en later van volkshuisvesting, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieu. In 2013 verliet hij de partij, uit onvrede met de koers. Tien jaar later werd hij weer lid, toen de fusie met GroenLinks in zicht kwam. Pronk is een internationalist. In zijn politieke en diplomatieke werk gaat het altijd om ontwikkeling, de-escalatie en vrede. We spreken hem vlak na de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 29 oktober 2025. We hebben het eerst over de teleurstellende uitslag voor zijn partij, GroenLinks-PvdA. De campagne was, concludeert hij, heel erg nationaal gericht. Daarna hebben we het over de fragmenterende wereldorde en de gevolgen daarvan voor de internationale rechtsorde. Eigenlijk is die fragmentering, betoogt hij, veroorzaakt door het Westen. Hoe is dat tij te keren?
