Donald Wright speaks with Jack Cunningham about his book Chrétien and the World. Conventional wisdom holds that foreign policy was not a priority for Jean Chrétien over his ten years as Canadian prime minister. In reality, he and his government pursued an often ambitious, activist policy to forward not only national interests but liberal ideals on the world stage. Chrétien and the World combines the perspectives of key players of the time with analyses by leading scholars. They draw on personal recollections, interviews, and research to portray a foreign policy that was more coherent and engaged than previously believed. As arguably Canada's first post–Cold War prime minister, Chrétien responded to events that reshaped the international landscape, notably the 9/11 attacks on the United States, the subsequent war on terror, the US-led invasion of Iraq, and Canadian involvement in Afghanistan. Working with trusted ministers, he emphasized trade liberalization, strong bilateral and multilateral relations, human security, and humanitarian intervention. Often characterized as purely pragmatic, Chrétien's tenure in fact marked a high point of liberal internationalism through an agenda that emphasized Canadian values and leadership in global affairs. Jack Cunningham is the program coordinator at the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History at the University of Toronto, where he is also a fellow and assistant professor at Trinity College. He is a former editor of International Journal and co-editor of Australia and Canada in Afghanistan: Perspectives on a Mission (with William Maley) and Australia, Canada, and Iraq: Perspectives on an Invasion (with Ramesh Thakur). Dr. Tien Lee, Founder and CEO of Aardvark Therapeutics, draws a clear distinction between appetite and hunger and the implications for treating metabolic conditions and managing weight. The Aardvark lead drug candidate, an oral bitter taste receptor agonist designed to activate the gut-brain connection to turn off hunger, is showing effectiveness in treating Prader-Willi Syndrome and general obesity.  There are also signs that this drug could be effective for those using GLP-1s to avoid nausea and prevent rebound weight gain experienced after discontinuing GLP-1 drugs. Tien explains, "That difference between hunger and appetite is the central thesis for our entire company, and your brain actually regulates how much you should eat. And it's driven by both appetite and hunger. So appetites like the carrot, and hunger is like the stick. Appetite is what you feel when you really enjoy a certain food, like ice cream or cake. And the appeal and the deliciousness of that food is a reward that your brain chases. Hunger is the feeling that you get when you have fasted for a prolonged period of time, and it really bothers you, and you feel real discomfort from not eating. And then at that point, food quality matters less, and you just want to escape that negative sensation. And we believe a lot of the current drugs are good at reducing appetite, but they don't so much address hunger like what our approach is pursuing."  "In obesity, there's probably a combination of both appetite and hunger at play. And they're both important. In fact, your body has both appetite and hunger that are regulated. And when we eat food, our gut releases a number of gut hormones that help tamp down and give us satiety for both appetite and hunger. However, there are certain conditions where hunger is the predominant issue. And with the disease that is our lead indication is a condition called Prader-Willi syndrome. It's a rare genetic disorder that affects about one out of 15,000 live births. And patients with this condition have this unabated, unrelenting hunger that they feel that really starts to manifest when they're about four or seven years old. And then characteristically, patients will even feel compelled to eat garbage to the point of stomach rupture if unregulated with their food access. So it's a very debilitating condition with a lot of suffering for the patients and their families."   "There are actually quite a number of new revelations in the scientific literature, and there's a greater appreciation of gut-brain signaling. So there are actually as many neurons in your gut as there are in your spinal cord, almost as many neurons as in the cat brain. And there's a greater appreciation of a two-way communication between your brain and the gut. So the vagus nerve is the largest nerve in your body, and there's actually a two-way communication between the gut and the brain. About 80% to 90% of the signal is actually from the gut to the brain. Vandaag bespreken we het boek, Dit is fascisme van Rosan Smits. Rosan Smits is adjunct Hoofdredacteur van de Correspondent. Rosan is politicoloog, deed onderzoek naar radicalisering en geweld in oorlogsgebieden. Ze gaf leiding aan de Conflict Research Unit bij Clinendael. Dit boek is onderdeel van de serie Vonkjes. Wat het boek goed laat zien is hoe fascisme op veel plekken in de wereld al de normaal is. Ze laat de belangrijkste voorbeelden zien die we veel tegen komen in de VS, in Europa en in Nederland en laat je zien waar en hoe het fascisme doordringt. Smits gaf me het gevoel dat het in Nederland niet zo snel gaat als in de VS en Hongarije bijvoorbeeld, en tegelijk schrok ik van de internationale netwerken en denktanks waar ze over schrijft. Het voordeel van de vonkjes, ook nu weer, is dat je in 180 pagina's weet hoe je fascisme herkent, het ondermijnen van de democratie ziet voor wat het is, de rol van extreem rijke mensen ziet en wat je er als burger tegen te doen hebt. Ze komt tot de kern in drie delen zoals het draaiboek dat we eerder zagen in het boek van Over tirannie, met wat er in de VS gebeurt, in Europa en in Nederland en hoe we het stoppen. Het is interessant, maar ook angstaanjagend. Het heeft mij bewuster gemaakt van dingen die ik las om ze te zien als fascisme, de afbraak van de democratie. De inleiding laat zien dat dit nu gebeurt. Facisme is er in veel meer vormen dan alleen de nazis tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.  Wie tijdig waarschuwt, wordt gezien als alarmist. Maar als de dreiging onmiskenbaar is, is het te laat. p10 Benoemen, begrijpen en bestrijden - zie ook Over tirannie van Snyder. Niet iedere facist is een alleenheerser (zoals Hitler). Het is geen eenduidige ideologie, het is een politieke strategie. Ze ziet het als haar rol dat zoveel mogelijk mensen begrijpen: dit is facisme. Hier beschrijft Smits de vijf stadia van het facisme: Ontstaan: de voedingsbodem wordt gelegd in de maatschappij, aanleiding een crisis of onvrede Organisatie: een fascistische partij of beweging vormt zich rond een leider Machtsverwerving: de beweging krijgt toegang tot de politieke macht, (democratisch) via verkiezingen Machtsuitoefening: politieke macht groeit uit tot regeringsmacht; de beweging probeert de controlerende macht uit te schakelen en grondrechten af te breken. Radicalisering of verval: het regime radicaliseert verder of verliest richting en brokkelt af. De grote leuge toe hij de vorige verkiezingen verloor en beweerde dat het een gestolen winst was. Ze hadden hem kunnen uitsluiten van de volgende verkiezingen na het veroorzaken van deze bestorming. Rechters worden aangevallen en omzeilt. De Amerikaanse bevolging beweegt, september de No Kings Dat, de grootste landelijke protest in de geschiedenis van de VS. In a lot of ways, this tournament was unique, featuring mainly unknown players outside the top 100, with Learner Tien being a massive favorite in the tournament. De Amerikaanse bank JPMorgan zet opnieuw een stap richting digitale financiële infrastructuur. Volgens The Wall Street Journal lanceert de bank een getokeniseerd money-market fund voor grote institutionele klanten. Het gaat om een beleggingsproduct dat normaal gesproken bestaat uit kortlopende, relatief veilige schuldtitels, maar nu in een digitale vorm wordt aangeboden. JPMorgan gebruikt daarvoor blockchaintechnologie, waarbij de tokens fungeren als digitale representatie van het fonds. Crypto speelt hierbij geen rol als beleggingsobject, maar als technisch middel om eigendom vast te leggen en transacties efficiënter te laten verlopen. De bank ziet dat klanten steeds meer vragen om tokenisering. Door gebruik te maken van een blockchain kan JPMorgan snellere afwikkeling bieden en beter inzicht geven in wie welk deel van het fonds bezit. Dat past binnen een bredere strategie waarin de bank al langer experimenteert met digitale activa, vooral achter de schermen en gericht op institutioneel gebruik. De timing is daarbij niet toevallig: grote financiële partijen zoeken naar manieren om bestaande producten te moderniseren zonder hun risicoprofiel te veranderen. De vraag blijft wel of dit daadwerkelijk een fundamentele vernieuwing is, of vooral een nieuwe verpakking voor een bekend product. Elders op Wall Street zorgde crypto ook voor discussie, ditmaal bij indexbouwer MSCI. Het bedrijf overweegt om ondernemingen met grote hoeveelheden treasuries of bitcoin op de balans uit te sluiten van aandelenindices. De reden is dat zulke posities het karakter van een bedrijf kunnen veranderen, waardoor het minder goed vergelijkbaar wordt met andere ondernemingen in dezelfde index. Dat idee stuit op kritiek, onder meer van Michael Saylor, topman van Strategy. Hij ziet bitcoin juist als een strategisch bezit en vindt dat bedrijven niet gestraft moeten worden voor hun balanskeuzes. De vraag is of dit soort overwegingen bedrijven kan ontmoedigen om bitcoin op de balans te zetten. Als opname in belangrijke indices in gevaar komt, kan dat gevolgen hebben voor de aantrekkelijkheid van een aandeel voor beleggers. Tegelijkertijd laat de discussie zien dat traditionele financiële partijen crypto niet langer negeren, maar actief proberen in te passen in bestaande structuren. In de prijsanalyse bespreekt Bert Slagter dat de bitcoinprijs deze week relatief rustig bleef en rond de 86.000 dollar uitkwam. Hij staat stil bij de theorie dat de markt al maanden in een bearmarkt zit en wat de argumenten daarvoor zijn. Ook komt het recente rentebesluit van de Federal Reserve aan bod en de woorden van voorzitter Powell. Tot slot is er aandacht voor nieuwe cryptoregulering in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De Britse overheid wil meer duidelijkheid bieden en malafide partijen weren, met regels die vanaf 2027 moeten gelden. De vraag is hoe deze aanpak zich verhoudt tot Europese en Amerikaanse regelgeving, en of het VK te laat is of juist profiteert van de ervaringen elders.
