Diversity is a strength to any community or organization. Different backgrounds and points of view lead to a fuller picture of who we are and what we’re seeking to achieve. But if we stop at simply acknowledging diversity, we’re missing the gifts and opportunities that come with true inclusion and teamwork. Katie Patterson knows this all too well, and has made it her mission to break down the barriers that divide us through her work at the Richardson Adult Literacy Center. They are tackling these barriers in a literal way, teaching English to those in the Richardson community who don’t speak the language. In providing a chance to communicate more effectively, they are offering inclusion and teamwork to members of the community who are desperately seeking it. Katie speaks from her experience in, and hope for the Richardson community, lending lessons that reach far beyond its city limits.
