Dr. David Howard helps us get an overarching sense of the book of Judges as we head into our study this Fall. He begins with the theme of the book—the downward spiral of Israel's national and spiritual life into chaos and apostasy, showing the need for a godly king to lead it—and helps us to see how it was written in order to show the consequences of religious apostasy and to point the way to a king, who, if he were righteous, would lead the people to God. Dr. Howard teaches Old Testament and Hebrew courses in the M.Div. and M.A. programs at Bethlehem College and Seminary. Previously, he taught for 28 years at Bethel Seminary, where he is now Professor of Old Testament Emeritus.

In this sermon "The Pain of the World and the Purposes of God," Pastor John Piper addresses the difficult question of why God allows suffering in the world. He begins by acknowledging that the problem of suffering is a real one, and that it is often difficult to reconcile with our belief in a loving and all-powerful God. Piper then goes on to offer four reasons why God might allow suffering in the world: To display his glory. Piper argues that the suffering of the world is a parable of the horrors of sin. It shows us how evil sin is, and how much we need to be saved from it. To conform us to the image of Christ. Piper teaches that suffering can help us to become more like Christ, who suffered and died for our sins. When we suffer, we learn to rely on God, to forgive others, and to love our enemies. To provide opportunities for compassion and service. Piper argues that suffering can create opportunities for us to show compassion and mercy to others. When we suffer, we are more likely to empathize with those who are suffering, and we are more likely to be moved to help them. To prepare us for eternal glory. Piper reminds us that this life is temporary, and that suffering will one day be abolished. When we suffer in this life, we are storing up treasures for the afterlife, where we will experience perfect joy and peace. Piper concludes by acknowledging that the problem of suffering is still a mystery, but that we can trust that God is good and that he is working all things together for our good. In summary, Piper says that God allows suffering in the world to display his glory, to conform us to the image of Christ, to provide opportunities for compassion and service, and to prepare us for eternal glory. Do we need deep scientific knowledge in order to make arguments for the existence of God? Or can we demonstrate a general, objective, rational case for God's existence using common observations found in our everyday life? Philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas introduced the world to his "Five Ways" for the existence of God back in the 13th century, and they are still being discussed and debated today. There are some similarities between Aquinas' Five Ways and many other common arguments for the existence of God (Kalam cosmological, moral, teleological, etc.) but there are also some important distinctions to keep in mind. In this midweek podcast episode, Frank sits down with Dr. David Haines, assistant professor of theology and philosophy at Bethlehem College and Seminary, to discuss two of the five arguments Aquinas used to prove the existence of God. David is active in research related to ancient and medieval philosophy, early Reformed theology, C.S. Lewis, Thomism, natural law, and natural theology. He has given conference presentations and published a number of articles and books in these areas, including Natural Theology and Natural Law. As Frank and David introduce the audience to two of these Five Ways of Aquinas, you will see that their (relative) simplicity can be deceiving, and their nuances will continue to spark discussion for many more centuries to come! In his forthcoming book, Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation,  Collin Hansen aims to add to our understanding of evangelical history in the second half of the 20th century into the early 21st century. Keller's life spans and intersects with many of the most significant people, events, and trends within Christianity during the last 75 years. The same can be said of John Piper, who along with Keller is a founding Council member of The Gospel Coalition. Piper is nearly five years older than Keller. Between them, they've studied in many of the most influential institutions of the post-war “new evangelicalism,” such as Wheaton College, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. They themselves have built several of the most influential institutions of the “new Calvinism,” such as Bethlehem College and Seminary, Desiring God, and The Gospel Coalition. They share something else significant in common: both list Jonathan Edwards and C. S. Lewis among their top influences. In this special season of Gospelbound, we're exploring, in depth, several key influences that appear in Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation. John Piper joins Collin Hansen on this episode of Gospelbound to discuss Edwards, Lewis, evangelical feminism, and the reception to his own expansive writing and teaching.
