There we already 5 Tuesdays in October, but why not upload a 6th episode just for Halloween?! For a Halloween special Rene played alongside Jess from the DMs After Dark and returning guest Lynn (matrimonally obligated to occasionally game) for some Ghost Club RPG by Andrew Dowell (with some extra gear and archetypes from the New Kids Expansion)! Unlike our other spooky one-shots, this one is perfect for the younger crowd, with a minimal amount of truly terrifying content, landing somewhere between Scooby Doo antics and young adult content like Lockwood & Co. or Dead Boy Detectives. Join Zoe "Bunny" Hunt, Eleanor "Dandelion" Harrington, and Remington "Twinkles" Paige as they investigate the terror of Twin Falls - The Haunted Mansion. I made a Ko-Fi if you feel absurdly generous and want to help cover podcast hosting costs & all the upkeep. I'm still working on whether I want to offer anything special over there or just give my extreme gratitude (maybe some stickers or something in the mail) to those who donate, but no pressure whatsoever :) Where to Follow Rene Plays Games: LinkTree | Instagram | Facebook | X/Twitter | Threads | DMs After Dark email: RenePlaysGamesPod@gmail.com Music in the Episode: Theme Song written & produced by Dan Pomfret | @danfrombothbands All Hallows Eve from TabletopAudio.com The Attic from TabletopAudio.com Barovian Castle from TabletopAudio.com Haunted from TabletopAudio.com Haunted Ramparts from TabletopAudio.com House on the Hill from TabletopAudio.com Vampire Castle from TabletopAudio.com

That's what we're unpacking as Kylee, Susie, and our special guest, Justin—Kylee's husband—gather around the mic to chat about Craig Davidson's "The Saturday Night Ghost Club." Listen as Justin shares his fresh take after finishing the book, and we chew over the surprising blend of medical insights and storytelling that shapes Jake's character. Our journey leads us to Uncle Calvin's wacky occultorium—a place where ghost stories are as common as the bizarre leads on hauntings he collects via his "bat phone." We share a touching moment featuring Billy Yellow Bird, a young boy longing to connect with his late grandmother, and how Uncle Calvin's kindness shines through these whimsical adventures. We explore the bonds between Jake and his friends, delving into his budding friendship with Billy and his charming crush on Billy's sister, Dove. Together, they navigate the innocent yet complex terrain of growing up amid ghost stories and carefree escapades. The episode takes a chilling turn with tales like the Screaming Tunnel, where we uncover more about Uncle Calvin's emotional layers and his passion for storytelling. The narrator shares his story of suddenly running into his old best friend while in New York City- the problem being that his old pal had died 12 years ago. The old friend convinces our narrator to join him at a Ghost Club in a fashionable apartment in the city that night where he can meet a bevy of ghost celebrities from the past, which he agrees to. While at the huge gathering, King Ferdinand of Spain notices that our narrator is looking at a very rare set of old spoons, and tells him he must keep them, refusing to take no for an answer. Upon leaving the party, the owner of the apartment confronts him outside and accuses him of breaking and entering his apartment.
The Night Under Lights Presents: The Seasons at the Moon Pool (replayable VRChat link and video) shown during Raindance Immersive was one of the most immersive music experiences I've ever had in VR so far. It was so awe-inspiring and incredible to see 3 DJ / VJ sets using the SNR Labs particle-screen version of their holographic Apple Global Illumination shader that I covered previously in episode #1413 with Apple_Blossom and A://DDOSS. The real-time immersive lighting effects have to be seen in VR to fully appreciate the awe-inspiring nature of it. You can see a video capture of it below, but if you have PCVR, then I highly, highly recommend checking out the replayable version on VRChat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZJ53W7NYnA VJs are able to input their 2D video livestream into the SNR Labs particle screen shader, which then translates the luminance values into height and enables a sort of volumetric translation. It has a DepthKit-like effect where you can see 3-dimensional shapes and objects with shadows or imagine if you were to push a cube through a sheet of fabric to get a feeling of objects from one-degree of fidelity, which is height from a fixed plane. VJ Silent and VJ namoron were instrumental in helping to develop this shader with SNR Labs, and TehArbitter's Moon Pool location for Night Under Lights was also instrumental in helping to shape the development of it. VJ TehArbitter (aka Arbi) brought together two other VJs and three DJs to present three sets with the theme of the different seasons. The first set was DJ Ladybug + VJ Silent, the second set was DJ Yuna + VJ TehArbitter, and then the final set was DJ Terkoiz + VJ namoron. I had a chance to catch up with half of the performers including VJ Silent and VJ namoron as well as with DJ Ladybug to talk more about the development of this specific project, but also to recount some of the history of the visual effects in the VRChat clubbing scene as well deeper trends of volumetric and holographic visual effects that VJs are exploring in VR. Also whether it merits a new terms as video jockey or visual jockey doesn't always fully encompass the holographic, volumetric, spatial, immersive, or narrative elements that are being explored. Some of the VRChat clubs discussed include: Dimension, Virtual Base event, Shelter, Ghost Club, Concrete, Concrete: Pale Sands, PSHQ, Slyfest, Loner, Kaleidosky, Sanctum, Schism, Deviate, Atlantis, Mochii's Island, Reflections, Redacted, Heist, Light Dimension, Simplicity, & Endless Serenity Also worth noting is that there are three VRChat worlds that are being featured in the Venice Immersive Worlds Gallery that connected to the themes discussed in this episode, and they're also three of the 20 VRChat worlds in the Venice selection that are not and likely will not have a public-facing world that's easily accessible. The NUL Presents˸ The Seasons Replay @ moon_pool is not in the Venice Immersive worlds gallery, and does have replayable version. But Silent works at Sanctum, and their billboarded stereoscopic screen in the Reactor is being featured in Venice, and the SNR Labs: Test Facility will be demonstrating the more 3D version of their Holographic shader named Apple Global Illumination, and Silent also mentioned Jerk and May who have the Concrete: Pale Sands, which is also a part of Venice Immersive. Delve into the enigmatic depths of biblical revelation with Matthew D. Arnold's groundbreaking work, "The Invisible Dimension: Spirit-Beings, Ghosts, and the Afterlife," a captivating exploration published by Anamchara Books. Departing from conventional readings, Arnold beckons readers to reexamine the sacred text, urging a profound engagement with the celestial realms and their inhabitants as depicted by biblical writers. Kenneth McIntosh, author of "Water from an Ancient Well," praises Arnold's approach, applauding its departure from contemporary biases. Instead of imposing 21st-century lenses, "The Invisible Dimension" immerses readers in the intricate contexts of biblical authors, unravelling the rich tapestry of their cultural, historical, and theological landscapes. At its core, "The Invisible Dimension" ventures into the spectral domain, unravelling the mystique surrounding spirit-beings in biblical lore. From celestial angels to watchers, Arnold meticulously dissects their roles, alongside probing the origins of malevolent entities and the spectral manifestations of departed souls. Prepare to rediscover the veiled mysteries concealed within the sacred text, as "The Invisible Dimension" beckons readers into a realm where spirits, ghosts, and the afterlife intertwine with the fabric of biblical narrative. "Strange stories" is the way Robert Aickman (1914-1981) described his fiction and to be honest that's putting it mildly. In the second episode of my 2-part examination of the life and career of Sir William Crookes (1832-1919), I explore events that inspired his interest in spiritualism, his unique methods of combining his studies in this area with his scientific background, and his work with some well-known 19th-century mediums, as well as the reception his work with mediums received from the scientific and spiritualist communities. ***** References Barral, Miguel. “The Ghosts of William Crookes.” https://www.bbvaopenmind.com/en/science/leading-figures/the-ghosts-of-william-crookes/ Crookes, William. I have attempted to give a history of the Ghost Society from 1850/1 which ran until the late 1870s. A very similar club reformed in 1882 calling itself the Ghost Club. This ran until 1936, A similar club reformed in 1938 until 1848, using the same name the 'Ghost Club' then it reformed again existing to the present day. This podcast tries to give some some idea of why and how it developed. It examines some of the important early members and how they influenced the club, concentrating mainly on its 1882-1936 period. I have not given lists of early members, explaining who they were as I thought that would be rather dull. I have just focussed in on a few topics and meetings to give a flavour of how the club operated. Please be advised this has been recorded in one take and is lo-fi.www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com

Continuing the off-week actual play content, Rene sat down with his wife Lynn to record a 2 player GMless session of Ghost Club by Andrew Dowell. Taking the role of teenage ghost hunters in Twin Falls, the players explore haunted locations and collect clues needed to summon, confront, and banish the ghosts of their home town. Designed for younger players, it was a really fun time, even though we definitely forgot some rules and bent some others. UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
Reaching as far afield as Australasia, The New Zealand Herald reported on May the 23rd 1931, ‘The London Ghost Club: Dining with the dead. Secrets of 50 years! If one were in a certain Street in the West End of London on a certain evening every month, he would see between 30 and 40 prominent men – doctors, barristers, businessmen – going to a fashionable restaurant to have dinner, and to gloat over eerie and fantastic stories of ghosts. No-one who associates with these men in ordinary life ever knows what goes on in the private dining room in this restaurant on the first Wednesday of every month. The diners leave their everyday personalities outside, and for several hours abandon themselves to a psychic orgy. They call themselves The Ghost Club. For 50 years they have been in existence, and no-one has yet revealed anything of the strange and carefully guarded proceedings. They are under an oath of secrecy not to divulge what transpires at these dinners. In the quiet of this private dining room many a tale too gruesome for publication is told, and these are all taken down by the Secretary with the solemnity of a coroner presiding over his court. The rules forbid publication of the stories. They are all stored away – many volumes of them – in a house in Kensington. The rules of The Ghost Club are as such; 1. That the club be called The Ghost Club. 2. That it meet, as a rule, on the first Wednesday of such months as may from time to time be decided in accordance with general convenience, provided that the November meeting shall take place on All Soul's Day, on whatever day of the week that may fall. 3. That it be the purpose of the Club to unite minds that are directed to the study of psychical subjects, it's proceedings being regarded as strictly Private and confidential among its Members.' The Ghost Club is still in existence today, though its members do not quite reach the heady heights of former members such as Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Ghost Club is the oldest para-psychological organisation in the world. It was established in 1862 but, according to the Club themselves, ‘has its roots in Cambridge University where, in 1855, fellows at Trinity College began to discuss ghosts and psychic phenomena.' It launched officially in London in 1862, although another given date is that it was formed in 1882 by Alaric Alfred Watts and his friend William Stainton Moses. At the height of the burgeoning Spiritualist movement in the Victorian 1800's, seances and other experiments to attempt to contact the dead had become hugely popular and it was at this time that the world's oldest and most esteemed yet little heard of club, The Ghost Club was formed. The club had some of the most famous literary and cultural figures of the time, and several Sirs and Lords. It was an all-male club, and perhaps even termed a ‘Secret Society.' Members call each other ‘Brother Ghost' and on every All Soul's Day, the names of all members, both dead and alive are read out. The Ghost Club is still going strong to this day and members never leave; technically, they can't. After death, members are still considered to be members. By joining the Club, they would remain ghosts in the afterlife, they believed. Old members included famous World War II poets Siegfried Sassoon and W. B. Yeats, and several Nobel prize winners. Chemist Sir William Crookes was a member and he used his laboratory to test the levels of ‘psychic force' of mediums. Ernest Wallis Budge, the curator of the Egyptian artefact rooms at the British Museum, was also a member. The archives of the hand-written notes of every meeting of The Ghost Club were first kept at the British Library, then moved to be stored at Cambridge University library. Roger Luckhurst for Oxford University Press says, ‘The most intriguing member for me remains Thomas Douglas Murray, the society gentleman who was known to have been cursed by a mummy he purchased a coffin lid of a malignant Priestess ...

The Netflix series City of Ghosts is a totally unique, fascinating program that tells the story of different places in Los Angeles through interviews with real people. The animated series is framed like a documentary. The show is hosted by a group of kids who are all members of the Ghost Club. In the club, they get reports of ghosts around the city, go to find them and, once they do, sit down and talk with them about their story. The show just earned a Peabody Award in the children and youth category. To celebrate, we are revisiting our conversation with Elizabeth from last year. She joins Bullseye to talk about making children's TV that adults can enjoy, capturing the feeling of her hometown of Los Angeles and the time she saw a ghost.
