This episode on the pellagra epidemic focuses on its prevalence in the U.S. in the early 20th century. Some of the scientific work done to understand it involves self-experimentation, and some of it is ethically problematic by today’s standards. The pellagra epidemic of the early 20th century may have been the deadliest epidemic of a specific nutrient deficiency in U.S. history. In part one of a two-part series about the crisis of health care for immigrants and refugees at the U.S.-Mexico border, Dr. Janine Young, a pediatrician at the University of California, San Diego, talks with Stephanie Desmon about the tenuous situation for children and families. More and more people are showing up at the border in poor health—dehydrated, malnourished, some severely injured and many traumatized—without any adequate care to meet them. They talk about the immigration policies that have led to a system ill-equipped to properly triage and treat the children and families seeking refuge in the U.S., and the misconceptions around people who are fleeing for their lives.

AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports on an evacuation order in parts of Gaza City.
In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Shanda Vander Ark, a Michigan woman, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her 15-year-old son, Timothy Ferguson, who tragically died in July 2022. Vander Ark, convicted of murder in December, received her life sentence on Tuesday, accompanied by an additional 50-to-100-year sentence for child abuse, according to court records. Timothy Ferguson's death left investigators and prosecutors stunned, as he was found to weigh a mere 69 pounds at the time of his passing, displaying clear signs of malnutrition and hypothermia. The distressing details of the case have deeply affected those involved, particularly the presiding judge, Matthew Kacel, who did not mince words during Vander Ark's sentencing. “You intentionally and systematically tortured this child,” Judge Kacel declared during the sentencing, as reported by WOOD. “Let's call it what it is. It's torture. You tortured this child.” The case garnered national attention when, during her trial, Vander Ark testified and was shown pictures of Timothy's emaciated body. A video posted on Court TV captured a disturbing moment when she repeatedly appeared to vomit in response to the graphic images, further highlighting the severity of the situation. The accusations against Vander Ark, as cited by CBS News and prosecutors, depict a disturbing pattern of abuse inflicted upon her son. She was accused of subjecting Timothy to various forms of torment, including forcing him to consume hot sauce, immersing him in ice baths, and depriving him of access to the refrigerator and cabinets, leading to his severe malnutrition. The sentencing of Shanda Vander Ark serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. The case has raised questions about child welfare and the need for vigilance in identifying and reporting instances of child abuse. Child advocacy groups and concerned citizens have urged individuals to be proactive in reporting suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities, emphasizing the significance of early intervention to prevent such tragic outcomes. As the community grapples with the profound tragedy of Timothy Ferguson's death, many hope that this case will prompt a broader discussion on child welfare, parental responsibility, and the crucial role that individuals and institutions play in safeguarding the well-being of children. For those seeking more information and resources related to child abuse prevention, organizations like Childhelp (www.childhelp.org) offer support and guidance to those in need. It is crucial to recognize the signs of child abuse and take action to protect the most vulnerable members of society from harm. In the wake of this heart-wrenching case, the message is clear: society must remain vigilant in its commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring their safety and well-being. A project is underway to see if harmful, malnourished kina can be plucked from the seafloor and turned into a lucrative seafood export. In parts of north east Aotearoa, wild kina populations have exploded, grazing kelp forests to bare rock, and turning seafloor into barrens. The kina don't die, but because there's little food left for them, they're not big enough to harvest and eat. EnviroStrat is undertaking a pilot which harvests the underweight kina and feeds them in a facility, until they're big enough to export to an east Asian market. Senior environmental consultant Johnny Wright speaks to Kathryn Ryan.
In the last episode, I told you about the death of four-year-old Serenity Rabbit, whose mother fought for months to protect Serenity and her siblings from the abuse she felt they were enduring in kinship care at the hands of her uncle and aunt, Clyde and Brenda Rabbit. I told you about the many reports of abuse and neglect Children's Services received about the children and the back-breaking contortions the agency seemed willing to perform just to close the kids' files. In this episode, I'll detail the aftermath of Serenity's death, which caused a massive public outcry in the Canadian province of Alberta. I'll tell you about the criminal investigation into Serenity's death, the fatality inquiry the province conducted, and the changes made to Alberta law to better protect all children in care, including Aboriginal children like Serenity and her siblings. This is part two of the infuriating story of Serenity Rabbit.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. In a chilling episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, host Tony Brueski unravels the disturbing story of prominent YouTube personality Ruby Frank and her business associate Jodi Hildebrandt. As the allegations come to light, questions about modern parenting, the perils of social media validation, and the influence of public opinion take center stage. The revelations leave listeners grappling with the blurred lines between public perception and a grim reality. Ruby Frank, famed for her YouTube channel "Eight Passengers," and Hildebrandt found themselves embroiled in controversy when a 911 call exposed a harrowing scene: an emaciated 12-year-old boy, covered in wounds and bound with duct tape, desperately seeking refuge at a neighbor's home. According to the call, the boy had managed to escape from Hildebrandt's residence, where both women were present. Brueski questions, "How could mothers, especially ones so visibly present in the public eye, allegedly engage in such abusive behavior with their children?" The podcast reveals that while these alleged abuses weren't explicitly shown on camera, there were veiled jokes hinting at abuse. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke provides a possible answer, suggesting a deep-seated need for external validation. “This is what happens when you fall in love with your own voice,” Dreeke states, highlighting the delicate balance between 'informers' and 'me formers' on social media. For Ruby, who seemed to prioritize showcasing her life on the platform, the balance seemed tilted towards the latter. Dreeke goes on to dissect the probable causes for such behavior, suggesting that the convergence of personal insecurities, a strict parenting style, and the hunt for validation on public platforms can create a toxic cycle. “When you start normalizing bad behavior, it becomes easier to escalate it,” Dreeke remarks. This escalating cycle might have been exacerbated when Hildebrandt, who might share similar beliefs, became a significant part of Ruby's life. The role of Ruby's husband, who occasionally appeared in her videos but has not been charged with any wrongdoing, remains a murky area. Brueski expresses incredulity, questioning whether the father was genuinely oblivious to the situation or perhaps another victim of abuse himself. The podcast touches upon the possibility of trauma bonding, wherein victims form emotional attachments with their abusers. A pivotal question remains: Why did it take so long for authorities to intervene? Despite previous petitions to Child Protective Services, the situation only came to a head with the recent dramatic escape of the boy. Dreeke alludes to the gradual desensitization of regular viewers who, accustomed to incremental increases in alarming behavior, may not recognize the situation's severity. However, an outsider or a professional might view the same behavior and recognize it as deeply troubling. The podcast "Hidden Killers" has thrown into sharp relief the complexities surrounding digital age parenting, the allure and danger of online validation, and society's role in perpetuating or preventing such situations. As we reflect on this distressing revelation, we're left to ponder: In a world where our lives are increasingly on display, how can we discern between genuine reality and a curated facade, especially when the stakes are so high? The most common nutritional deficiency in America, and increasingly worldwide, is the malnourished microbiome. If the microbiome is not well nourished, pathogens are allowed to grow. We all harbor some pathogens, but they are not harmful when they only exist in small numbers. When pathogens proliferate, they can cause a wide range of symptoms such as gas, bloating, inflammation, pain, diarrhea, and/or constipation. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as dysbiosis, which is also known as intestinal permeability.Dr. Ross Pelton is the Scientific Director for Essential Formulas, and a microbiome scientist. Essential Formulas specializes in premium probiotics. Ross is also a pharmacist, clinical nutritionist, health educator, the author of 12 books. Can a person be active in recovery without realizing why they are in recovery? Rachel Pollack is such a person. Stricken with an eating disorder, sidelined by the pandemic, it wasn't until months into beginning a recovery path that Rachel realized that her anxiety disorder was partially responsible for helping to fuel it. In this 14th episode of season 3, Marc gives us a detailed glimpse into Rachel Pollack's world. Long before she chronicles her journey as a published author, Rachel floated in the middle-space that is overlooked when discussing eating disorders. Not everyone who suffers from this affliction hates food. And not everyone spends every waking minute consuming food. In her words, “You can eat three meals a day, and you can still have an eating disorder.” Rachel talks at length about the concept of ‘control,' how it is misunderstood, perceived, and how her understanding of it only made things worse. Tracing Rachel's journey, we understand how someone on the precipice of losing weight, doing CrossFit, and gaining traction in her life realizes that ‘control' can sometimes be an illusion. It was only through therapy that Rachel comprehended that it was her disorder that maintained all of the control. Hiding. Eating in secret. And, eventually, not eating in secret. Rachel Pollack's story is a singular one. Transitioning from ‘staying in therapy just to get people off my back' to seeing full-scale progress, her tale reinforces the notion that the person in recovery can have a unique moment of enlightenment: the brain reacts differently when nourished regularly. It's a special episode that magnifies a more than common condition. It spotlights a recovery tale that shows one person's saga from feeling dead inside to feeling alive and whole again.
