#22 Kelvin Young is a healer and a person in recovery. After growing up in an environment that encouraged the suppression of emotions and discouraged healing practices that did not involve substances, his first sound healing experiences were, as he describes, "a sip of healing in a sea of chaos." He knew that if he could experience that level of peace while he was behind bars, the possibilities were endless upon his release from prison. So he became a sound healer himself. When Kelvin looked around, he didn't see any other men of color in yoga and healing communities. Nor did he see many leaders who looked like him in recovery spaces. In this episode, with an unwavering and deep compassion for himself and others, Kelvin talks frankly about why that is. He names systems that were designed to keep people sick, addicted and incarcerated; and how he not only found freedom within himself, but now reaches out a hand to others & breaks down stigma within and about BIPOC communities. In addition, we discuss the following:The beautiful practice of sound healing and other holistic tools. The power of connection with others, within ourselves, and with nature.Finding wholeness in exactly who we are. How media portrayal of black men influenced racial trauma, addiction and incarceration.Being of service, and how safe healing spaces can break misconceptions. And so much more! Have you heard about radon before? A radioactive gas released from uranium decay, radon is found in any enclosed space where the building makes contact with soil. This means that homes, schools, workplace (unless you work outside) has radon! It's a tasteless, odorless, and invisible gas. Why should you care? The answer is easy: radon can result in lung cancer, and it's largely preventable by reducing exposure. Hence, we're calling it the "deadlier cousin" of the silent killer (a.k.a. carbon monoxide). Joining us today is Dr. Kelvin Young, a medical oncologist from the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, AB, Canada. He brings his area of expertise to explore the medical aspect of radon induced lung cancer, including chances of survival and treatment options. Tune in to learn the Canadian vs. the WHO radon limit, how we can prevent this with testing kits, and how soon to take action depending on your testing kit results. Do you remember or know Buffy the Vampire slayer? No, this is not a typo! Listen to the end to find out about why Dr. Young is so passionate about this vampiric classic. My guest today is Kelvin Young, a certified Sound Healer, and owner of Kelvin Young, LLC. He is also a person in sustained recovery which means Kelvin hasn't used alcohol or any other drug to cope with his mental and emotional distress since March, 6th 2009. Kelvin received his recovery coaching training at CT Community for Addiction Recovery. and his Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) certification at Recovery University. (Advocacy Unlimited) He is also trained in Intentional Peer Support (IPS) and Emotional CPR. (eCPR) Kelvin wrote this poem in prison:"The Eyes Of A Silent Son" by Kelvin YoungLook into my eyes, and tell me what you see.Is it a lost soul with no control trying to be free?As I look into the mirror and stare into my eyes,I see all the anger and self-hate, hypocrisy and lies.I see resentment, frustration, embarrassment and pain,I see jail bars and fancy cars as I cruise down memory lane.I see the feelings I repressed, going back to childhood.I need to let go of all those feelings, and I would if I could.I see the hurt I caused to the ones I love the most.I see my brother on his wedding day as we celebrate with a toast.I see the good and the bad times that I experienced in my life. But it's so hard to let go of all that bitterness and strife. There's a sense of sadness when you look into my eyes.Like the ones you see when a close relative dies. But this death is not physical; it has to do with the soul. It's that morbid feeling we get when our spiritual energy is low. It's like nothing matters anymore, like that day when I was fired,Feeling depressed and weak, I can't sleep, but I'm so tired.I'm tired of all the pain, the hurt and the rain. From that cloud that keeps following me, sometimes I think I'm insane. But when I look out my window and see the beauty of the lake.It reminds me of good times, like when I was nine and things were fine. And with the sunrise I feel the presence of the Creator. When I look out my window, I see me in the beauty of nature.I'm a part of God's creation, nature and humanity! The loving spirit that's in Jesus is also in me!So I've learned to love myself and others just for who we are.And I learned about this love looking out my window with jail bars. www.kelvinbyoung.com ******************************************************************Ready to make changes in your career and personal life? Kelvin Young grew up one of five brothers. He saw his older brothers fall victim to the crack epidemic of the 80s and 90s, and started to suffer with substance use disorder as a young child. Kelvin's life became a roller coaster, bringing him to lowest of lows. When he found himself incarcerated and tired, he decided to make a change. And change he did. Kelvin is now a sound healer, and he taught me all about the practice. I really enjoyed our talk immensely, and I applaud the work Kelvin is doing to bring methods like sound healing and yoga to his community. Check out his work here. Maria and Julio travel to Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, CT for a live show to discuss addiction and mental health in POC communities. They're joined by guests Kelvin Young, sound healer and certified recovery coach, Kenyatta Thompson, senior community organizer at Katal Center for Health, Equity, and Justice, and Taylor Ford, statewide youth and family coordinator with FAVOR, Inc. The overdose epidemic is often treated as an issue within white communities - who do make up a majority of opioid overdose victims - but a CDC report released earlier this year found that black and Latino individuals are overdosing and dying increasingly faster than white individuals. In Connecticut, where the Oxycontin-maker Purdue Pharma was based, 93 percent of overdoses in the state are caused by opioids, making it ground zero for the epidemic. WHY IS AFFORDABLE HOUSING AN ISSUE RIGHT NOW?Back in 2005, when the housing market started to decline through the main crash in 2008/2009, people started getting loans for properties when they shouldn't have. Combine that with a slowed job market, and many of these people had to default on their loans. A decade later, while the market has grown significantly, we're still not in a normal situation, since market inventory is low and there's a high demand for homes, especially in the $100,000 to $250,000 range. Even ready, willing, and able buyers have to offer more for homes than they're worth, which makes finding affordable housing a difficult process.A SOLUTION IN THE MARKET:We brought up one solution to this problem by bringing Kelvin Young of KEYO Tiny House onto our show. He builds beautiful, stick-built tiny homes and is driven to do this to bring affordable housing to the marketplace. These homes feature high-end appliances, tankless water heaters, granite surfaces, 16-foot ceilings, and a host of other incredible amenities.THE HOUSING CRISIS CONTINUEDIn the second part of Today's Real Talk Episode 1 podcast, we continue to cover the affordable housing crisis in relation to relaxed land use and zoning rules. We bring back Kevin Young from KEYO Tiny House, as well as Levi Santos from MVB Bank. Levi runs a program that was originally designed for people building custom homes, but today is used for those building a KEYO Tiny House.Through this program, buyers with a minimum score of 660 can qualify for a mortgage to build a KEYO Tiny House. With this opportunity, they also have the flexibility to build on property where they normally wouldn't be able to afford to live, like right off of Lake Norman.THE FINAL WORDWe enjoyed talking about what's going on in the market in terms of affordable housing right now and hope you go ahead and listen to this two episodes in their entirety. Kelvin Young is the Assistant Executive Director of Advocacy Unlimited/Toivo Director and believes that healing begins from within. After many years of battling with drug addiction, anxiety, and depression, he began his healing process in prison. While incarcerated, Kelvin learned about the transformative powers of meditation, which helped him look within to find inner peace in a very hostile and restrictive environment. Chris and Kevin talk about the struggles along the path to recovery and what Toivo is doing to help others heal.
