Kein Filter, kein Fake.

Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! (1967), Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Erik the Conqueror (1961), Eyeball (1975), The Four of the Apocalypse (1975), Frankenstein '80 (1972), Frankenstein Island (1981), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th (1981), The Giant of Marathon (1959), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), The Great Silence (1968), Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970), Hercules in the Haunted World (1961), Horror of Dracula (1958), Inferno (1980), I Vampiri (1957), Knives of the Avenger (1966), Long Hair of Death (1964), Night Child (1975), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Planet of the Vampires (1965), Psycho (1960), She (1965), Shock (1977), Suspiria (1977), Thunderball (1965), The Toolbox Murders (1978), Torso (1973), The Whip and the Body (1963), Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)
1985: A Novel by Dominic Hoey. Set in Auckland in the mid 80's as the title suggests, this is the story of a young man coming of age in a dysfunctional family in Grey Lynn before it became gentrified, when the area and many of the people who lived in it were rough, not necessarily law abiding and where there seemed sometimes to be no future. Obi and his best friend Al discover a map which they believe leads to treasure, and which they hope will turn their fortunes around. The book is extremely atmospheric of the era, and took me right back. Terrific local fiction. High Heels and Gumboots by Rebecca Hayter. Rebecca is a sailor and a journalist, often combining the two things, who turned her back on Auckland and bought a property in Golden Bay, where she had grown up many years earlier. It's a story about leaving the city and discovering independence and self sufficiency, a strong community to call her own, and finding ways to come to terms with the fractious relationship she had had with her mother, who was something of a legend in the area.

Jeff Copeland is the author of the new book Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn: A Walk On The Wild Side With Andy Warhol's Most Fabulous Superstar. By the mid-1980s, Holly Woodlawn, once lauded by George Cukor for her performance in the 1970 Warhol production and Paul Morrissey directed Trash, and the inspiration to the opening verse of the 1973 Lou Reed song “Walk On The Wildside”, was washed up. In Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn (Feral House, 2025), Jeff Copeland brings readers into Hollywood in the 1980s and shares his story of writing a book about one of the most infamous of Warhol's Superstars. A young, aspiring writer desperate for a break...and the legendary Andy Warhol superstar who gave him the story of a lifetime. By the mid-1980s, Holly Woodlawn, once lauded by George Cukor for her performance in the 1970 Warhol production and Paul Morrissey directed Trash, was washed up. Over. Kaput. She was living in a squalid Hollywood apartment with her dog and bottles of Chardonnay. A chance meeting with starry-eyed corn-fed Missouri-born Jeff Copeland, who moved to Hollywood with dreams of 'making it' as a television writer, changed the course of BOTH of their lives forever. Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn is a story of how an unlikely friendship with a young gay writer and an, ahem, mature trans actress and performer created the bestselling autobiography of 1991, A Low Life in High Heels. This book about writing a book is a celebration of chutzpa and love as Holly, the embodiment of Auntie Mame, introduces Jeff to the glamorous (and sometimes larcenous) world of a Warhol Superstar. In turn, Jeff uses his writing (and typing) talent to give Holly the second chance at fame she craved. In turns hilarious and heartwarming, Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn is a portrait of the real Holly who loved deeply, laughed loudly, and left mayhem in her wake. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to a new episode of the High Heels and Tea Podcast
If you're a woman, there's a chance you've probably worn high heels before. So you know how uncomfortable they can be. Yet, for many different reasons, despite the pain, we continue to slip our feet into 4, 6, even 8 inch heels. For some, they make you feel powerful, others like the additional height they provide, some like how they make our butts and legs look. But did you know heels were never intended to walk in? In this episode of The Quicky we're going back in time to understand the history of the high heel, how they were meant for men and whether they are considered a feminist or anti-feminist statement. Sarah is hoping high heels don't come back in style because she has to work on her toe spread. We discuss. We hear how hundreds of nuns were able to show the secret to a healthy brain, and we learn why your vocabulary could predict your likelihood of cognitive issues. Sarah joined a queer water polo team for "seniors," and we are psyched that she's going to find her soul mate in the deep end. We discuss whether sports have become "whiny," and why people treat referees and umpires disrespectfully. And we wonder whether we should rely on robots for regulations instead. We celebrate all the joy, victory, and athleticism at the Paris Olympics. We find out what the "normal" amount of friends people have in adulthood and why it's hard to find people you trust. Plus, we learn why Yellowstone's number one killer isn't a wild animal or even cliffs, but something far stranger.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://www.honeylove.com/braincandy! #honeylovepodHead to https://moshlife.com/braincandy to save 20% off plus FREE shipping on your first 6-count Trial Pack!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
