And with the internet in full rebellion mode, you'll have to forgive us for being so frustrated. And maybe the LA Galaxy are frustrated too? After all, it doesn't seem likely that Greg Vanney or the club saw the way things would be going just 26 days from kick-off. Are the Galaxy ready to lose Julian Araujo plus Efrain Alvarez? Hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter react to the latest rumors involving Galaxy players. And they pretend like no signings are ever going to be made. Surely this isn't the team that will face off against the reigning MLS Cup Champions on February 25th in one of the largest games MLS has ever held? So what pieces are the LA Galaxy missing? And why is Isco another sign that things aren't going well? Plus, AppleTV is launching MLS Season Pass on February 1st. And they just dropped a bunch more names that will improve your experience. And then the news dropped, during the show, that Chris Klein would be back with the club for the 2023 season. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Sophie Nicolaou get sidetracked in the middle of their usual run down with breaking news from Kevin Baxter and the LA Times that Klein would return after suspension. So all the talk about AppleTV and what that deal will now entail might seem a little less important when you go back and listen to the show. The conversation about announcers and what MLS teams are required to produce for the League Pass "verticals" might seem trivial. But at the time, we didn't know we'd be interrupting the show with breaking news. Hear from Baxter about Klein and his most recent talk with Greg Vanney, which happened just minutes before Kevin joined the show. There are rumors about Douglas Costa and Sam Grandsir, and we even dive into the reversible jackets that Tim Cook unwittingly unveiled. We've got a ton to talk about, so let's get to it. EPISODE 80: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) 1st SPECIAL COMMENT Is America free? Or are we slaves to the mob rule of Republican gun owners? These Americans - just out for a Saturday night in a place in Colorado Springs that they considered their "haven," just like the children were in Uvalde and just like the shoppers in Buffalo, were killed - directly or stochastically - by Republicans.(5:40) We always ignore the darkest, truest part of the equation of gun violence: there are people in this country who WANT this to keep happening. It is why more children die by gunfire every year than do on-duty cops or active military. And the Republican Party has prostituted itself to these people. (9:10) The 2nd Amendment is a lie; there are 103 words related to money or ownership in the Constitution as amended and none of them are in 2A; (13:41) Right now the President could make enormous inroads into the availability of the guns with which Republicans hunt minorities and children, just by Executive Orders. He must make them, and more over he must lead us in the truth: once again, in Colorado Springs, REPUBLICANS MURDERED AMERICANS. B-Block (18:51) 2nd SPECIAL COMMENT: If you were Attorney General and you were trying to run out the clock on prosecuting an ex-president and make sure it was the clock that got the blame - and not you - you'd do exactly what Merrick Garland did in appointing a Special Counsel nearly two years after the crime (22:08) There are seven major rationalizations for Garland's act. I'll let them by refuted by Neal Katyal, William Barr, Jill Wine-Banks, Bradley Moss, Matthew Miller, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Samuel Alito - and Robert Mueller. C-Block (30:50) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: The extraordinary offer by dog rescue champion/singer/comedian Elayne Booster (31:25) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Nothing new on the James Comer Scandal (32:21) IN SPORTS: Qatar didn't ban beer at the World Cup. It just raised the price to $22,600; the infamous "Mantle Lewd Questionnaire" is up for auction (and I'll tell you about the only baseball document even more profane than Mantle's: the 1898 Special Instructions To Players (38:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Geraldo Rivera and Ronny Jackson are no match for Maggie "Trump's Change of Tone" Haberman (40:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: 40 years ago, the media guy for the NFL Players Union and all but one of the reporters covering the NFL strike talks pranked the one remaining reporter. It. Was. Epic.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Josh and Kevin will discuss the Galaxy's continuing roster development by touching on rumors encompassing 2023 and a rumor that will likely send Julian Araujo out of Major League Soccer by year's end. Plus, can you build a young core and add older experienced players to it? We've got a bunch of things to touch on, and we've crammed it into the shortest show. It just happens that our short shows are pretty long. So come along for the ride. We're ready to talk about your LA Galaxy.

It was the most goals they've scored in a single game since 2019 and the most goals scored in a first half since 2016. But the biggest problem with this team is the consistency and finishing. Can they fix those as Seattle gets ready to come to town? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter want to talk about the formation that the Galaxy feel comfortable in and the fact that Douglas Costa got benched. Are these things related? Josh and Kevin will start by sifting through a wild and crazy MLS weekend that was only spurred on by the Galaxy and Vancouver scoring seven combined goals. Will this be a sign of things to come in the league with just ten games left for LA? And was Greg Vanney sending a message to Costa that he's going to let this team settle into a 4-2-3-1 with Sam Grandsir and Kevin Cabral on the wing? And is Vanney sticking by Cabral throughout this season even as bogus rumors are taken down? Plus, what do the 2022 Galaxy and the 2012 Galaxy have in common? Does that mean something for this weekend's game? And can we project anything forward about a struggling Seattle Sounders side? We've got a show packed full of stats and interesting tidbits. Including a tiny hint about a jersey sponsorship that will probably make you angry! As always, thanks for joining us on Monday! And what do you know? In fact, Sporting KC could do nothing wrong, and the Galaxy didn't deserve to do anything right. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the 4-2 loss to SKC and much more. But is Greg Vanney getting the tactics wrong? Or is he putting his faith in players that don't want to play the way he asks? Is Douglas Costa a problem child for the Galaxy? And why are Julian Araujo and Raheem Edwards being rested? Plus, could Araujo be on his way to Porto in only a few days? Would you take $5-million from a European side if it meant that Araujo would have to leave immediately? Or would you hold onto the Mexican International in hopes of a break out at the World Cup? And Riqui Puig is in Los Angeles. Does that mean he has his Visa and is ready to play? Or will he have to sit out Vancouver to be prepared for Seattle? Josh and Kevin start with Greg Vanney's choice of starting lineups. That included a Galaxy debut for Gaston Brugman, and starts for Chase Gasper and Eriq Zavaleta. And while those were question marks at the beginning of the game, they all worked well. What can Brugman bring to the table for the Galaxy? What does a distributing six look like down the road? And are the Galaxy still looking to add one more piece? Plus, how big of a story will Dejan Joveljic be in the next 13 games? Probably one of the biggest. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter want to tie up any loose ends and finally put his extended break to bed. The guys will start with some more observations on the Galaxy's win over Austin FC and why Dejan Joveljic is practically screaming at Greg Vanney to let him start. What do the stats say about Joveljic's scoring prowess in recent games? And does that mean more minutes for the Galaxy's chess-minded striker? Josh and Kevin will also dive into some updates on the Galaxy's group of internationals and why Efrain Alvarez's stint with the U-21s isn't a great sign for the club. Plus, did Julian Araujo finally find the field for Mexico? And why three young Galaxy players are fighting for Olympic and U-20 World Cup spots. Hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter have a long free-flowing discussion about the Galaxy's struggles against Houston and why it doesn't seem to matter the lineup. The Galaxy have a chance creating problem that only appears to be solved with Victory Vazquez on the field. And then they have a finishing problem as well. The guys want to dive into the rotated lineup and why Dejan Joveljic was one of the better players on the field for LA. And why Efrain Alvarez is causing all sorts of issues for Greg Vanney. Plus, why does Vanney think there should be a dedicated defensive midfielder. And why he thinks creation will come from Mark Delgado if he gets that. Did Delgado do that in Toronto? But does all this go away if the Galaxy can advance in the US Open Cup past LAFC on Wednesday night? But to come out flat against a Dallas side that was intent on destroying you and having no reaction? That's not how playoff teams are made. And it's not how Champions react. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter want to break down the loss to Dallas. And even when the defense gives up three goals, the main focus will be on the offense. Because the Galaxy have proven to be a good defensive team, but they haven't proven to be a good offensive team. Josh and Kevin will talk about Boxing's big day at Dignity Health Sports Park and why the stadium over-extended itself. And why, if you were one of the people scrambling to get inside the stadium, you would have done better staying outside? And if Chicharito is slumping and bringing on Dejan Joveljic doesn't change anything, then you need to look at how you put them in the best positions. So who is going to make the angling balls, and who is going to make the run dictate the pass? The games are coming fast and furious now. The Galaxy will play Minnesota United midweek, Houston over the weekend, LAFC next week in the Open Cup, and then close out the month with Austin. So how does Vanney manage that stretch of games? But does that mean you can't be concerned about the offense? Because you probably should be. Hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Galaxy's win over Austin against a team that hadn't been beaten at home all year. What do the 19 points from 10 games mean? And do you feel like there's some sustainability to the defensive record? Josh and Kevin will discuss the faltering Galaxy offense and why Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Douglas Costa, Efrain Alvarez, and Kevin Cabral all need to find the back of the net. The lack of creativity in this lineup is starting to show itself. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Galaxy's lack of creativity and why they think this club will need something different. Either that's getting Victor Vazquez back and healthy or by going out and grabbing a CAM in the summer transfer window. But like so much of this early season, this show will revolve around Cabral's inability to make an impact on the game and why Dejan Joveljic is the hot hand that needs more playing time. Will Vanney's defensive balance be thrown away by the club in favor of more scoring? Or does it make more sense to get Joveljic minutes in place of the biggest goal-scoring threat for the Galaxy? Week 9 of the MLS season is upon us, and a familiar face pays a visit to the Banc. Tyler Miller, no longer the starter, and his Minnesota United FC join us for Sunday services at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold. As the Loons would soon find out, good things come to those who sub in late! LAFC win an exciting affair, 2-0, behind two more goals from substitutes and staunch back line play. Looking to continue the weekend-long party that ACFC kicked off on Friday, LAFC forced several tough saves from the former Forward Madison 'Mingo, Dayne St. Clair in the first half, but the best chance of the first 45' came from Finnish forward Robin Lod. Crepeau made his only save of the half (and the match), and we head to the locker 0-0. Just past the hour mark, Dolo called on his bench to provide the heroics, as he inserted Moose and Cifu into the drama for Latif and Mahala. Ten minutes later, Ryan Hollingshead came on, and the chess match was almost complete. In the 82nd minute, Hollingshead gets on the end of a cross and a deflection for his third of the season to put LAFC up one. In the 90th, Cifu clips the Loons' wings, as Chiqui receives an unreal pass from Pancho before finding his fellow countryman to put LAFC up, up, and away, 2-0. Also on this episode, Filly has the hiccups. And heartburn. And a little indigestion. But really, you could barely tell. The boys cross off a huge bucket list item as well as another 14+ hour day at the Banc, LAFC kicks off AAPI Heritage Month, and Kevin Baxter remains silent. We're just 10 episodes away from our second century, and we couldn't have gotten this close without all the support from the millions who are a part of Defenders Nation! And like usual, that question revolves around Kevin Cabral and how he can justify playing a winger who seems incapable of scoring for a forward who's a pure finisher. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the issue now firmly in Vanney's hands and their takes on it. And while there's some criticism of the defense, we think the offense needs to kick it into gear more than the defense. And Kevin Cabral, FINISH YOUR CHANCES! Kevin Baxter is away for World Cup Qualifying on today's show, so it's up to Josh Guesman to hold down the show all by himself. Josh will start by talking about pupusas and what an absolutely gorgeous Saturday we were all having until the Galaxy ruined it. The grass looked terrific, the white uniforms sparkled, and it was just the perfect situation to get a win and enjoy the rest of the weekend. Well, that ended in the 9th minute. Was it a defensive breakdown? Yes. Was the defense the problem on Saturday? No. Josh will tell you why Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez couldn't score and why Kevin Cabral was the Galaxy's best player! Also, why Kevin Cabral was the Galaxy's worst player. And it's probably important to gain some perspective on where the Galaxy were last year and what they're doing in the first four games. Plus, Josh will get you audio from Greg Vanney's post-game press call where he focuses on "patience" and what he sees Cabral doing during games. Are you ready to be done with the Cabral experiment? And if you are, who do you place in his spot? Can Vanney be trusted to get the best out of Cabral? And does he have an end to his patience? Finally, Josh will lay out the upcoming schedule for next month and tell you why it doesn't get any easier. In fact, it gets soooooo much harder! Stats, game recap, Victor Vazquez losing his left foot. This pod has it all!

When the LA Galaxy played some of their biggest games and always came up short? Did it feel like that again on Saturday when the Galaxy dominated a Seattle Sounders team but got nothing for it? And did the defense regress back to last year? Is it all too familiar? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the Galaxy's 3-2 loss of the Seattle Sounders. The guys will start with the basics, but there are some fundamental questions about the defense and why it broke down in three set-piece opportunities. And yes, we're counting the penalty kick as a set-piece breakdown. And while defense is a team game, there's one individual who bears a lot of the brunt of the collapses -- and that's Julian Araujo. He's mentioned in all three goals and can be directly be blamed for the first two. So what's happening to the wonderkid? And is it a bigger problem to worry about or something he can work through? Is the pressure from Mexico, and those huge expectations, finally getting to him? Or has a more talented Araujo just not figured out how to put it all together in the first three games? And should Greg Vanney be looking to change things up and sit Araujo? Plus, the Galaxy's offense is second in shots but much further down the list in goals. While possession is generating the chances, are the Galaxy missing too many good looks at goal. And who needs to put them in the back of the net? Kevin Cabral is undoubtedly someone to focus on. But Chicharito is also an excellent place to look for more. We've got a fun show with a lot of analysis from the Galaxy's loss, so join us for some Galaxy-talk and see what we got right and what we got wrong!

And the reason for that hush was Efrain Alvarez. So is this the sign that Alvarez should finally be given the freedom to start? On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter discuss the LA Galaxy win over Charlotte FC on Saturday night in front of nearly 75,000 people. But there are other topics to cover. They're going to talk some offense, some defense, and whether or not Julian Araujo is a believer in the darkest of arts. Josh and Kevin will start by applauding the effort and the result from the 1-0 win over Charlotte on Saturday. They're going to talk about Alvarez and his wonder-striker and why it's not like we haven't seen this movie before. Does that mean we need to see him starting? Does the injury to Vazquez put Vanney in a position to reward the 19-year-old? And how does Alvarez's game change when he's a starter? Plus, the Galaxy lead the league in shots and key passes, but they've only seen two goals hit the back of the net in 2022. Are you worried that Chicharito, Cabral, and Costa aren't producing? And how much does Cabral shoulder the blame for the poor finishing? But there's a bigger question about Cabral. Are the Galaxy not finding their Young DP? And the defense has been the standout through 180 minutes. What have Julian Araujo, Raheem Edwards, Nick DePuy, and Sega Coulibaly been able to do this season? And why are they the key to success? Finally, Josh raises questions about Eriq Zavaleta, Sergio Ramos, and Julian Araujo. And then he talks about charts. It's a pretty standard Monday. But the Galaxy could be on their way to club history.

Faith & Politics – South Dakota Catholic Conference

On this episode, Chris is joined by Dr. Kevin Baxter, former superintendent of Catholic schools for the largest U.S. archdiocese, Chief Innovation Officer for the National Catholic Education Association, and current director of the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame. They discuss Dr. Baxter's recent book, Greatness in Smallness: A Vision for Catholic Microschools, published by the NCEA. As Dr. Baxter describes it, a "microschool" isn't defined so much by total enrollment, but is rather an attitudinal posture that isn't afraid to depart from historical paradigms. For example, he describes how multi-age instruction (multiple ages of kids in one classroom) couldn't be further from a "desperate" measure, but rather is a model with many, many benefits for children, and which is being used in some premier, high-tuition schools. Looking to the future, he sees leadership and innovation as the two pillars on which Catholic schools can newly thrive (again, not defined in enrollment data) in the years ahead.
