In dieser Folge spreche ich mit Matthias Steiner, Olympiasieger von 2008 im Superschwergewicht und Gründer von Steiners Low Carb, und mit Prof. Dr. Thomas Haak, Facharzt für Innere Medizin, Endokrinologie und Diabetologie. Matthias hat nach Ende seiner Profikarriere fünfundvierzig Kilo abgenommen, mit selbst entwickelten Low-Carb-Ersatzprodukten und das als Typ-1-Diabetiker. Welcome to The Turf Zone podcast. This episode features the article “Minimizing Spring Dead Spot” written by M. Aaron Tucker, Assistant Professor, Auburn University and Wendell J. Hutchens, Assistant Professor, University of Arkansas. Introduction Spring Dead Spot (SDS) is one of the most persistent and damaging diseases affecting warm-season turfgrasses that undergo winter dormancy. First documented in 1954 on a bermudagrass lawn in Stillwater, Oklahoma, SDS continues to challenge turf managers across the southern and transition zone of the United States (Wadsworth & Young, 1960; Tredway, 2009). This article outlines the biology of the disease, key infection periods, and the latest cultural and chemical strategies for effective management. Pathogen Biology SDS is caused by soil-borne fungi in the genus Ophiosphaerella, specifically O. herpotricha, O. korrae, and O. narmari. These pathogens differ in geographic distribution and turfgrass host preference. In Alabama, O. korrae is likely the most prevalent species (Hutchens et al., 2025). Disease Cycle and Symptoms The fungi that cause Spring Dead Spot are ectotrophic root-infecting pathogens, colonizing the outer surfaces of roots, rhizomes, and stolons, leading to necrosis. This damage predisposes turfgrass to winter injury, with symptoms emerging in spring due to the combined effects of fall infection and harsh winter conditions. SDS is a monocyclic disease, with a single infection cycle per year. Infection occurs in late summer to early fall, when evening temperatures cool and soil temperatures drop consistently below 70°F. Symptoms appear in spring as circular or semi-circular patches of dead turf, ranging from six inches to several feet in diameter. Severe outbreaks can result in large, coalesced areas of turf loss, with recovery taking two to three months after green-up—making proactive management essential. Cultural Management Strategies Effective cultural management hinges on understanding the disease's biology. Thatch and organic matter serve as reservoirs for pathogen survival. Practices such as core aerification, verticutting, and fraze mowing during the summer remove thatch and dilute organic matter, thereby reducing inoculum and mitigating spring symptoms (Hutchens et al., 2025). Conversely, cultural practices such as verticutting and aerification on symptomatic turf in spring can actually hinder recovery. Mechanical stress on already damaged turf slows regrowth, so spring cultivation should be avoided. Proper fertilization, particularly nitrogen applications in late summer/fall and spring, supports plant health and recovery (Tredway, 2021; Hutchens et al., 2022). Ammonium sulfate has shown efficacy against O. herpotricha, while calcium nitrate is more effective against O. korrae—highlighting the importance of pathogen identification (Tredway, 2021). Chemical Management Strategies Chemical control with fungicides is most effective when timed correctly. Applications should occur during fall as soil temperatures drop consistently between 65-55°F. Current research is refining this window using the Battaglia-Hutchens cooling degree-day model to optimize timing (Battaglia et al., 2024). The modern demethylation-inhibiting (DMI) fungicide mefentrifluconazole offers strong SDS suppression, while older DMIs like propiconazole and tebuconazole provide moderate efficacy (Clarke et al., 2020). Select succinate dehydrogenase-inhibiting (SDHI) fungicides—like isofetamid, penthiopyrad, and pydiflumetofen—also provide excellent control but carry a higher risk of resistance. Rotating SDHIs with DMIs is recommended to preserve efficacy. Precision Application Technologies Advancements in GPS-guided sprayers allow for targeted fungicide applications. Mapping disease areas in spring and early summer enables precise fall fungicide treatments, reducing both cost and environmental impact (Booth et al., 2021; Henderson et al., 2025). Conclusion Understanding pathogen biology, the disease cycle, and optimal application timing is essential for managing SDS. Continued research is uncovering pathogen-specific responses to cultural and chemical strategies, offering promising avenues for more refined and effective control. In podcast Radio Meerdijk blikt oud-speler Paul Weerman terug op een verloren seizoen. Hij is kritisch over de benoeming van Ernst Söller, die na het wegsturen van technisch directeur Nico Haak werd aangesteld als de nieuwe directeur voetbalzaken. „FC Emmen speelt betaald voetbal sinds 1985. Ik heb dat altijd van dichtbij gevolgd. Maar we hebben in veertig jaar nog nooit een vast beleid gehad”, opent Weerman in de nieuwe aflevering. „De ene keer mag Pietje het doen. Daarna mag Jantje het twee jaar doen. Dan komt er een trainer die het weer op zijn manier mag doen. Dat is niet van de laatste jaren. Dat was 25 jaar geleden zo. Dat was 15 jaar geleden zo. En dat is nog steeds zo.” Weerman is niet onverdeeld gelukkig met de recente personeelswisselingen binnen FC Emmen. Het bestuur van de club stelde technisch directeur Haak vrij van werkzaamheden, waarna Söllner doorschoof als de nieuwe directeur voetbalzaken. „Ik ken Ernst al heel lang. Ik vind hem een topgozer. Hij kan veel waarde hebben voor de club. Maar waarom is hij niet in het bestuur gebleven?”, vraagt Weerman zich hardop af. „Op deze functie en op de positie van technisch manager moeten nieuwe mensen komen. Dit is het verplaatsen van poppetjes. Bovendien wordt een extra functie gecreëerd. Dat kost ook extra geld. Kan FC Emmen niet gewoon met één directeur af?” Weerman, voormalig trainer in de top van het amateurvoetbal, heeft een helder advies voor hoofdcoach Menno van Dam. „Doe vooral wat jij zelf wil. En sta daar ook achter. Ga niet te veel mee met een technisch directeur. Menno is 7 dagen in de week, 24 uur per dag met voetbal bezig. Maar met spelers op het niveau van FC Emmen moet hij het simpeler houden. Zorg nou eerst dat de basis goed voor elkaar is. Dus niet de ene keer met vijf achterop en de volgende keer drie. Het rampseizoen van FC Emmen is bijna ten einde, maar directeur Rinse Bleeker kan zeker nog niet met zomervakantie. Met het vertrek van Nico Haak is de chaos bij de club verre van opgelost. ‘Het moet bestuurlijk, technisch en sportief anders'. In Radio Meerdijk reageert de algemeen directeur uitgebreid op het wegsturen van technisch directeur Haak en het daaropvolgende opstappen van commissaris René Dale. Die laatste gaf aan onvoldoende vertrouwen te hebben in Bleeker. „Ik las bij jullie in de krant dat hij geen vertrouwen meer in mij had. Dat had ook wel anders gekund'', stelt de directeur over de kritiek op zijn rol in de kwestie. Bleeker baalt dat hij na eerder al technisch managers en trainers, nu ook zijn collega-directeur de deur moest wijzen. „We zijn ontevreden over de prestaties van de selectie en de stand op de ranglijst. Dat is niet alleen de schuld van Nico Haak, dat moeten we ons allemaal aanrekenen. Ik ook als kapitein van dit schip.'' Smallere selectie en staf Voorlopig nemen twee bestuursleden de rol van technische directeur op zich, en is wel duidelijk dat er nog meer verschuivingen op komst zijn bij FC Emmen. Bleeker daarover: „We gaan alle functies tegen het licht houden. Het zal bestuurlijk, technisch en sportief anders moeten. Als we zo doorgaan komt het niet goed.'' De interne evaluatie van het seizoen zal wat Bleeker betreft snel afgerond zijn. „Vrijdag na het laatste fluitsignaal begint ons nieuwe seizoen. Er is heel veel werk te doen bij FC Emmen deze zomer.'' De bestuurder hoopt voor komend seizoen het spelersbudget te verhogen, mogelijk zelfs met hulp van een spelersfonds met externe geldschieters. „We denken na over een smallere selectie en technische staf. Wellicht een aantal spelers van een hoger niveau aangevuld met meer eigen jeugd. Een spelersfonds moet natuurlijk wel een direct voordeel hebben op het veld.'' 'Dan glijden we nog verder af' Over de verbouw van De Oude Meerdijk had Bleeker graag nieuws gebracht, zoals hij eerder al een aantal keerde aankondigde. „Dat het zo stil blijft, wekt de indruk dat we er niet meer mee bezig zijn. Het tegendeel is waar, maar het is een proces dat je niet even op de achterkant van een bierviltje uitwerkt.'' Of de ambitie van een Drentse voetbaltempel voor 12.500 supporters met meer ruimte voor extra sponsoren nog realistisch is nu eerder een leegloop dreigt, reageert de clubleider stellig. „Als we het nu maar even laten zitten en maar afwachten tot we weer wat hoger op de ranglijst staan, dan geven we ons over. Dan glijden we nog verder af. Ik wil niet alleen maar hopen dat het beter wordt, een beter en groter onderkomen blijft cruciaal voor de toekomst van FC Emmen.'' Supporters van FC Emmen kunnen al zestig dagen niet naar het eigen stadion vanwege sneeuw en vorst. Daarin schuift supporter van het eerste uur Ben Oort aan bij presentator William Pomp en clubwatcher Pim Siegers.
