In August 1993, veteran hiking instructor Lyudmila Korovina led six young trainees into Siberia's Khamar-Daban mountains. After good initial progress, the group was caught in days of freezing rain, leaving them soaked, cold, and exhausted. On August 6, during their descent from 2,396 meters, 23-year-old Alexander Krysin suddenly collapsed, bleeding from the eyes and mouth, convulsing, and dying within minutes. Korovina attempted to help but soon suffered the same symptoms and died. One by one, the remaining hikers—Tatiana Filipenko, Viktoriya Zalesova, Timur Bapanov, and Denis Shvachkin—collapsed violently, some clawing at their throats, vomiting blood, tearing at their clothes, or bashing their heads against rocks. The story begins on August 2, 1993, in the Khamar Daban mountains of southern Siberia. A group of students visiting from Petropavl in Kazakhstan planned to hike from the shores of Lake Baikal and summit Kang-Ula.The seven hikers were Aleksander Kyrsin, 23; Tatyana Filipenko, 24; Denis Shvachkin, 19; Valentina Utochenko, 17; Viktoriya Zalesova, 16; Timur Bapanov, 15; and leader Lyudmila Korovina, 41. They were reportedly a tight-knit bunch of good friends. The group had done difficult hikes before, and all were physically fit. They also had a hiking legend in their midst. Lyudmila Korovina was a well-known survivalist with a strong will and excellent problem-solving skills. Their tent was damaged and the team was found in separate places and wearing little to nothing in the freezing snow. Some were found with fatal wounds but most without such obvious injuries. So what happened? The Khamar-Daban Incident has been likened to that of Dyatlov Pass, because of the mysteries surrounding it. This incident also occurred in Russia, near Lake Baikal, in 1993. One survivor made it down the mountain her team was hiking with their teacher and told a harrowing tale of how they did not make it. What happened to them and how much of her story is accurate? In August 1993, a group of kayakers from Ukraine travelled to Irkutsk in Southern Siberia. Whilst enjoying the river and scenery south of Lake Baikal, they came across something haunting: a 17-year-old girl, covered in blood and mumbling incoherently about a tragedy that had befallen her and her friends. On August 2, 1993, Lyudmila Korvina, who was an experienced hiking instructor, led 6 of her students on a hiking trip to the Khamar Daban mountain range in southern Siberia. The first 2 days of the hike, the group did really well, beating the time anticipated to get up the Retranslyator peak. However, when they were beginning their descent on August 4th, they were hit with a rainstorm which slowed them down. The following morning, the group set off down the mountain but after only a few minutes the first disaster struck. Sacha, who was at the back of the group, began to scream. When the group turned around, they saw that he was bleeding from his eyes & his ears as well as frothing at the mouth. It didn't take long before every single member but one succumbed to the same symptoms.Valentina Utochenko, the only surviving member, ran for her life not fully understanding what was happening. For 4 days, she followed power lines down the mountain, until she found a river & began to follow that. In August 10th, she was found by a group of kayakers. An autopsy report concluded that they had all died of hypothermia except for Lyudmila who had suffered a heart attack. They all had signs of bruised lungs, & protein deficiency due to malnutrition was listed as a contributing factor to their deaths. The deaths were ultimately ruled to be accidental. However, only 1 student would make it back alive after a mysterious illness took the lives of the other group members. This student, 17 year old Valentina Utochenko, was so traumatized that, after being forced to survive on her own in the mountains for 4 days before her rescue, she was unable to speak for years to follow. After being discovered brutally murdered in her office, investigators first believed that her death was the result of a robbery gone wrong, but pretty quickly it became clear that this was no robbery- Chiquita was targeted. Her husband, Greg Davis (or Harris, depending on the sources), told investigators everything they needed to know about the timeline of their night in hopes of helping them solve the case and deliver his wife the justice she deserved. However, it became clear that someone was leaving out important details about this timeline, which would eventually lead investigators to their suspect.
