Durante el año pasado hubo muchas pérdidas para el rock y el pop mundial. Ya unos días antes de que empezara, el 28 de diciembre de 2015 falleció Lemmy Kilmister, líder de Motörhead. El 10 de enero de 2016 murió David Bowie, ocho días después Glenn Frey de The Eagles y el 21 de abril fue la hora de Prince. A lo largo de esa última semana Sting decidió componer una canción en homenaje a estos rockstars, que integraría el álbum 57th & 9th, gran acontecimiento además porque llevaba diez años sin grabar un disco. Un fragmento del tema 50.000 dice: “Cincuenta mil voces alzándose cada vez que él cantaba, y cada palabra que escribió vuelve a reflejarlo, aún creyendo esa vieja mentira, el que se traiciona a sí mismo. Las estrellas de rock nunca mueren, tan solo se desvanecen”. Cuando la prensa le preguntó por este single, el ex líder de The Police respondió: “La mortalidad te hace levantar la cabeza de alguna manera, sobre todo a mi edad, tengo 64 años. La canción es un comentario sobre lo sorprendido que todos estamos cuando uno de nuestros iconos culturales muere: Prince, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Lemmy. Son nuestros dioses, de alguna manera. Así que cuando mueren, tenemos que cuestionar nuestra propia inmortalidad. Incluso yo, como una estrella de rock, tengo que cuestionar la mía.
