Fenomena ini langsung jadi diskusi hangat di internet karena banyak artist dan ilustrator yang speak up tentang penggunaan kecerdasan buatan untuk bikin karya.Generate gambar pakai AI dianggap kayak nyepelein kerja ilustrator, padahal menghasilkan gambar gak semudah ngeklik enter. Mirza Hadi Ruswa recounts in the preface of his novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, how he came to write the story of a courtesan from Lucknow.  His friend Munshi Ahmad Hussain had rented a floor in a chowk in Lucknow and this is where he organised mushairas for his friends. Next to his house lives a most mysterious woman who is never seen, but sometimes late at night she can be heard singing. Once at a mushaira hosted by Munshi, Ruswa recites a couplet and a soft voice from next door exclaims, “wah! Wah!”. The mysterious lady invites Ruswa to her home and turns out to be Umrao Jaan Ada who Ruswa had known many years ago. She then proceeds to narrate her story to Ruswa, which then became the famous novel, Umrao Jaan Ada.

Soundwalk
Preston Island Soundwalk

Soundwalk

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2025 32:28

I haven't yet said this, but my intention with this and the previous three recordings was a hopscotch survey of Pacific Coast soundscapes. To recollect now, these have been Yoakam Point on the Oregon Coast, Copalis Ghost Forest on the Washington Coast, Keahou on the Big Island of Hawaii and now Preston Island in Crescent City, on the Northern California Coast. This reflection on Preston Island leads me to ponder sites along the lower Columbia River at length, for reasons which will soon reveal themselves.Preston Island is weird. For starters, it's not what anyone would call an island. You can walk right out onto its strange rocky surface from the mainland. The view from the island is breathtaking though, and I thought it made a better album cover than the island itself: The island is relatively flat, but also boulder-strewn and cracked. When I visited, it was foggy, and I felt like I was on the surface of another planet. Something about it seemed unnatural:It all clicked when I found this historical photo:Preston Island was carted off. It was mined down to a nub. Let's get our bearings. Here's an 1880's Crescent City map, and a modern satellite photo. (I guess cardinal north pointing up wasn't yet the rule.)On the map you'll see Preston Island clearly drawn as a landmass, and Hall's Bluff, appearing much less prominently than it does today. I outlined the locations on the satellite image. Here, all the rock contained in those geographical features was mined and dumped in the ocean to create the jetty you see on the upper right of the satellite image. They really moved mountains. This is what Preston Island used to look like, and here it is today, courtesy of Google Street View:Our soundwalk takes us from West 5th Street in Crescent City, over to the beach and up over what's now called Half Butte, to about where this old photo of Hall's Bluff (aka Lover's Rock) was taken in 1876. Look at the tiny figures on top for a sense of scale:The massive Lover's Rock headland, was also carted off to build the jetty. It's harder to match the original photo vantage point with Street View, but it's also just completely gone. But let's get back to Preston Island, that weird scab-land of a place. Let's take a closer look at it, because it gives our soundwalk such unique character about 17 minutes in. At a glance, it seems lifeless. A green hue, coming from chalky veins in the rock, adds to the otherworldliness of the landscape.Tide pools form on the perimeter, among the cracks and fissures in the rock substrate. It's here that I place my recording hat down and the soundscape is instantly transformed. The skitter of crabs and the capillary clicking sounds of tiny shellfish erupt to fill the high frequencies, while the surf sound is attenuated by the topography of the rocks. It's another world. A 2021 article in the Bandon Western World states, “Preston Island has a long history in Crescent City. Originally Preston Peak, the area was a sacred site for the Tolowa Nation.” It is not well known, but the Tolowa were the subject of the most persistent and possibly worst massacres of Native Americans in the USA, starting in 1853, in the Crescent City area. Now, I couldn't corroborate the name “Preston Peak”, but I have to admit I was not surprised to hear that a sacred place to Native Americans was destroyed. There have been others.Pillar RockConsider Pillar Rock (briefly “Pilot Rock”) in the Columbia River. Once a monolith upwards of 75 feet tall, it was dynamited and flattened at the 25 foot level to install a navigation light:The Chinookan name for the monolith was Talapus. A cannery built nearby in 1877 used a likeness similar to Talapus for its canned salmon label, Pillar Rock brand. The rock was dynamited by 1922 when, according to the shipping news, a red navigation light was established. Like Talapus, the spring Chinook fishery in the Columbia was a diminished remnant of what it once was when Pillar Rock Cannery suspended operations in 1947.In a surprising epilogue Pillar Rock is still an actively used trade mark today, in 2025. The company now fishes the waters of Alaska for wild Sockeye to fill the modern day tins. It's remarkable how Euro-Americans changed the landscape and practically wiped out the fishery, but the brand is the thing that perseveres. What does it say about us that this is the way things are?Let's consider the intriguing story of Mount Coffin, up the Columbia River about 40 river miles.Mount CoffinThe geological feature that was first described to the historical record by Lieutenant William R. Broughton in 1792, and given the name “Mount Coffin”, was a Chinookan canoe burial ground. It would have appeared much the same a half century later, when Charles Wilkes visited in 1841, but quite different than the 1900 image above. Imagine, if you will, thousands of dugout cedar canoes perched in the trees on the prominent outcrop, about five feet above ground, in varying states of decay, all with bows pointed more or less toward the ocean. Within these canoes lay the interned bodies of Chinookans of the Skilloot tribe, wrapped in cedar blankets with their belongings placed beside them. That scene came to a swift end in 1841.The U.S. Exploring Expedition, led by Charles Wilkes, camped on Mount Coffin in 1841. When the men accidentally let a campfire spread, it destroyed an estimated 3,000 burial canoes. The Chinookan Indians were distressed to discover that their burial site had been destroyed by the negligence of whites and, according to visiting artist Paul Kane, “would no doubt have sought revenge had they felt themselves strong enough to do so.” (Stealing from The Dead, Oregon Historical Quarterly)Many Upper Chinookan villages were by 1841 entirely depopulated following devastating waves of malaria in the early 1830's, so Paul Kane's observation rings true.Within a century this lowland was completely transformed. The largest lumber mill in the world was built upriver from Mount Coffin.Mount Coffin was completely dynamited and quarried, beginning in 1929. The site is a now home to a chemical plant. Flat as a pancake. Finally let's consider the monolith in the heart of the Columbia Gorge that few realize barely escaped dynamite. So we are told…Beacon RockTo the natives it was Che-che-op-tin. When Lewis & Clark mapped the area in 1805 it was referred to as “Beaten Rock” and on return a year later “Beacon Rock”. Later, the 1841 Wilkes Exploring Expedition labelled it “Castle Rock”, which stuck for the better part of a century. Since 1916, it's been Beacon Rock.Just west of Beacon Rock was a large village Captain Lewis in 1806 called Wah-clel-lah (a Watlala winter village):This village appears to be the winter station of the Wah-clel-lahs and Clahclellars…14 houses remain entire but are at this time but thinly inhabited, nine others appear to have been lately removed, and the traces of ten or twelve others of ancient date were to be seen in the rear of their present village. There was also another village at the very foot of beacon rock. Traces of it remained visible to the trained eye into the 1950's.“BIG BLAST WILL WRECK IT”“Castle Rock to Go” and “Whole Rock is Doomed” read the subheadings in a March 16th, 1906 article in The Oregonian. The article outlined how the owners, a coterie of eight businessmen including Dan Kerns, acting as the Columbia Construction Company, had already cut three 20 to 30 ft. tunnels under the southern aspect of the monolith in preparations to dynamite “the shoulder” of the rock and quarry the stone for building material, eventually removing it entirely. A Wikipedia entry states (without citation), “The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned to destroy the rock to supply material for the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia.” This appears to be incorrect. The Army Corps didn't have that plan. The Columbia Construction Company purported to have a plan to mine an initial two million tons for building material (possibly to include jetty material—there were no contracts) in 1906. Columbia jetty work began 20 years prior to that. The Columbia Construction Company was taken to court, and a jury sided with Portland & Seattle Railway, who argued the tunnels were part of an elaborate ruse to “claim damages from $100,000 to $500,000” from lost mining activity due to the rail line going through their intended quarry site. According to the plaintiffs, it was just a scheme to get the railway to pay dearly for the right of way. The jurors dashed that plan, stipulating a $5000 settlement. Was it an elaborate ruse? Or was the jury predisposed not to trust city businessmen? What was clear, according to The Oregonian, was that, “clergymen, leading citizens, women, teachers, and all classes in Portland and throughout the state were horrified as the proposed destruction of such a majestic landmark.” “I should judge Castle Rock contains 10 million tons of first class building stone,” Kerns said in 1906. Interestingly, that wouldn't have been enough for the massive Columbia jetty system, which ultimately required 13 million tons of rock, when competed in 1939, after half century of construction. Henry J. Biddle took ownership of Beacon Rock from the Columbia Construction Company in 1915, under the condition it would be preserved, and set about realizing his dream to build a trail to the summit.Henry J. Biddle purchased the rock in 1915 for $1 and during the next three years constructed a trail with 51 switchbacks, handrails and bridges. The three-quarter mile trail to the top, completed in April 1918, leads to views in all directions. (Wikipedia)Thanks for listening and reading. I'm thankful for your attention. From ‘Digibabble’ to Digital Reality: Sable & Paskalis on Marketing News for 2025

Insider Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2025

For my 2025 kickoff of Insider Interviews marketing luminaries Lou Paskalis and David Sable joined me for one of the most candid conversations on the media and ad world for an incredibly candid conversation on the media and ad world that cuts through what David famously coined as "digibabble" years ago. We moved from their personal passions (don't get David started on The Doors!) to how advertising evolved in the tech era... to its future, jam packed with opinions based on their decades of award-winning experience. (Lou, who previously ran global marketing at a couple of small brands you may have heard of, like Bank of America, American Express, and where I first met him, E.J. Gallo, is now the strategic mind behind news assessor Ad Fontes Media, The street cred of David - a top voice on LinkedIn, thanks in part to his terrific blog, "Imagine," stems from being former global CEO/Chairman of Y&R (now VMLY&R) and board member for a ton of big companies like American Eagle and Ethan Allen. He is now Vice-Chairman at the forward-thinking mid-size holdco, Stagwell, where Lou is also an advisor, I discovered!) What informs a lot of the conversation is David's explanation of how Stagwell flipped the traditional agency model on its head: Instead of buying up creative agencies, founder Mark Penn premise to build around tech."... We began by buying tech, aggregating tech and creating a tech platform. Then we went out and wrote in the creative pieces of business." But as David emphasized, "Tech leads the way for everything. But our model, which is the model that's working the best, is that tech is an enabler: Our job is to tell stories and to tell them well." Stories - and art itself, even using the most sophisticated tech and AI - is only a result of the information fed to it. David shares a beautiful analogy about what a Monet envisioned using different brushstrokes on, say, Water Lillies. We have to inform our models to consider "impressionism," just as we have to provide data for use. He says, "Data is a picture of what happened before. That's it. Now, I can interpret it, I can use it, I can I can create algorithms or models, but at the end of the day, data is a picture of what was. It can predict, and AI is going to be better at that, but that's all it is. So it's only as good as the data that it has." And don't get him started on OMNICHANNEL as a buzzword, either. The through line of this episode is to appeal to and follow the consumer. Not jam tech terms or "digibabble" down their throats. Unsurprisingly, Lou agrees, comparing ineffective presentations to Charlie Brown hearing his teacher: "Wah wah. Wah wah. Digital." His point when pitching the CFO could also apply to the consumer: "If you don't contextualize everything into the growth agenda, you might as well not go to the meetings. They don't care what we do, they care how what we do achieves growth." Be human, even in an AI world. That applies to retail, to advertising and, as we learn, the news media. The Future of News Perhaps most compelling was our discussion about the critical importance of news. Insider Interviews followers know this is a clarion call for Lou, which he focused on in his first appearance here last year. Now, backed by Stagwell's staggering study of 50,000 people, Lou shared a startling insight: "The ROI, or return on advertising -- ROAS, on news is higher than any other content vertical you can buy." Marketers are missing out on if they are "news-averse," based on some misguided perceptions about "brand suitability." "11% are self-identified as news junkies who only read or watch the news when they're consuming media. That's 11% more business for any marketer in America in 2025 who will achieve the growth agenda and win by reaching these very influential people." (To learn more, all Insider Interviews fans who are publishers are invited to apply to attend Stagwell's Future of News next meeting at 1WTC on January 2...

Episode #301: “I want to invite everybody to see the Karen people not just as victims, but to experience the real beauty in the culture, the uniqueness, the simplicity.” These are the words of Saw Sha Kerpaw Wah, a humanitarian from Karen State, Myanmar, who shares his story of displacement, identity, and commitment to his people. Born in 1995 during the fall of Manerplaw, the headquarters of the Karen National Union, his family fled through the jungle, marking the start of their journey as refugees. Sha Kerpaw Wah spent his early childhood in a refugee camp in Thailand, before his family resettled in Norway. There they found safety, but engendered a sense of cultural dissonance. Although warmly welcomed in Norway, and living there for 20 years, Wah always felt a deep spiritual connection to Kawthoolei, the Karen homeland, feeling that it was his "duty" to return and serve his people.A major turning point in Wah's life came during his final year of college when he watched a video of Karen indigenous leader, Saw O Moo, inspiring him to leave his studies and fully dedicate himself to humanitarian work. He began making frequent trips back to Kawthoolei, working to support those displaced by Myanmar's ongoing civil war.Today, Sha Kerpaw Wah continues to serve the Karen people, advocating for education, self-reliance, and a united leadership among Karen leaders. His ultimate dream is to see a peaceful, independent Kawthoolei where future generations can grow up free from the violence and trauma that have shaped his life.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 24, 2024 is: wassail • WAH-sul • verb To wassail is to sing carols (popular songs or ballads of religious joy) from house to house at Christmas; the verb is usually used in the phrase "go wassailing." As a noun, wassail can refer to (among other things) a hot drink that is made with wine, beer, or cider, as well as spices, sugar, and usually baked apples. Wassail is traditionally served in a large bowl especially at Christmastime. // Every year at Christmastime the magazine publishes a recipe for the traditional drink served to those who go wassailing and may appear at one's doorstep. See the entry > Examples: "As early as the 13th century, people in England would travel between houses to go wassailing and wish their neighbors well during the winter months." — The Cedar County (Missouri) Republican & Stockton Journal, 20 Dec. 2023 Did you know? This season, you might hear (or sing) the Christmas carol that begins, "Here we come a-wassailing / among the leaves so green." As is holiday tradition, you will wonder: what in the world is "a-wassailing?" In fact, wassailing is an old custom that goes back to the 1300s. The verb wassail comes from the noun wassail, which dates to the 1200s and was first used to refer to an Old English custom of hospitality. In medieval England, a courteous host would offer a cup to a guest and toast them with the salutation wæs hæil, or "be in good health." The guest would accept the cup and respond with drinc hæil, "drink in good health." Soon, wassail was also being applied to the party at which the wassail was offered, as well as the actual drink passed around. By the 1400s, it was used to refer specifically to a drink served at Christmastime. As the drink became associated with yuletide, wassailing itself changed. The meaning of the verb wassail as it shows up in the carol refers to going around, caroling, and wishing those you visit good health and holiday cheer.

Brenda McMorrow discusses mantra music and medicine songs. Brenda McMorrow is a Canadian Devotional Chant artist who is known for her unique and warmly embracing style of mantra music, in which she blends elements of acoustic folk, world rhythms, and ancient Indian chants with a sweetly introspective singer-songwriter's sensibility. Yoga Journal describes Brenda as having “a knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics”.  As spiritual teacher Ram Dass has said: “Brenda has a gift”, and her music has been touching people's hearts worldwide.Originally a folk/pop singer/songwriter, it was when Brenda participated in her first Sanskrit chant while attending a Yoga workshop in 2004, that she had a profound knowing her musical journey was leading her to places more expansive and heart-opening than she had ever imagined. Brenda remembers: “It was a very simple chant (Om Namah Shivaya), and at the time I had no idea what it signified: all I knew was that every cell in my body started vibrating, and I felt absolute joy”. While in India soon thereafter, Brenda began combining her own songwriting with ancient Sanskrit chants – and she has been flowing with this divine wave of Bhakti energy ever since. With 5 celebrated devotional chant albums, Brenda is a featured artist on White Swan Records, a Colorado label.. She has shared festival stages with Krishna Das and Snatam Kaur; has been accompanied by Grammy award winning cellist David Darling; has been a guest musician with esteemed Kirtan musicians Jai Uttal, Wah!, David Newman, Girish, Mirabai Ceiba, Jai Jagdeesh, Shantala and Dave Stringer; and has been invited to Bhakti Yoga festivals and events across North America, Europe and Asia. When not on the Bhakti road, Brenda calls the countryside near beautiful Guelph, Ontario, home.https://brendamcmorrow.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/truth-be-told-paranormal--3589860/support.

Mixing assassins and child care; what could go wrong? In 25 parts, edited from the works of FinalStand.Listen and subscribe to the ► Podcast at Connected..“Lying is fine, but take care to not cause suffering because that makes it wrong.”Keys jingled and Timothy walked through the door."Mr. Denver," Nikita got off before I could make introductions."Oh, you must be the cop," Timothy snorted."Does Cáel have so many we are labelled by profession?" her suspicious nature flared up."Nah. Unlike Gomer here," was he calling me a hick?"I'm New York born and bred. I know a police issued Beretta in a hip holster even under a jacket. Also, the next time Cáel calls me Mr. Denver will be the first," Timothy chuckled. "If it's any consolation, I can see why he's risking grave bodily injury by going out with you.""Does he think I'll shoot him if I catch him screwing around behind my back?" she asked pleasantly."Pretty much," Timothy winked at me."Good boy," she patted my cheek."Ah, the prospect of imminent pain reminds me; Timothy, I need two more favors," I begged."This is going to be good," Timothy replied sarcastically."I've got four girls lined up for Saturday night; three high society children and Nikita here. Is this okay, or do I need to take this somewhere else?" I began."This the nine year old?" he questioned."Aya and her two sisters," I replied."Sure. Every Park Avenue babe should get to meet a gay tattoo artist from Queens once in their life before Prom," Timothy nodded sagely. "The other thing.""Yeah; could you double-date with me. There is this school teacher who rooms with her older sister. The sister came through a nasty breakup recently and the teacher asked me if I could help out," I tried to sound upbeat."Wow; I don't know what to say," Timothy's mouth gaped. "I don't know what's dumber; asking your gay roommate to distract his fuck-mates sister so he doesn't end up screwing them both, or requesting this in front of the cop you are almost dating?""Wah; huh; what he said; that last part," Nikita glared at me."Hey, now," I warded her off. "There's barely a week of school left. Then she'll get a summer job and I won't be taking the kids to school anymore and that will be that.""You are sleeping with a teacher at the school your girls attend?" she gasped. "Why?""She's hot," I declared. Nikita looked shocked. "I mean really hot. Not as gorgeous as you, but she's very attractive."Don't think I'd lost my damn mind. I had, in fact, learned something over four years of being far hornier than smart. See, when a girl thinks you are true blue and you cheat, you are a scumbag. If a girl thinks you've slept around and now you are hers and hers alone, you cheating still makes you dirt, but that is ameliorated by the deep-seated fear that she did something wrong. If you are openly a man-whore when you start dating, you can cheat. She thinks she's weaning you off your promiscuous ways. This toleration is not limitless, so be warned. Make every indiscretion count. Eventually she will give up and dump you. Refer to the break-up sex discussion earlier. My mentor once asked me if one woman would ever be enough. I told her that I always thought one woman would be enough and I was always wrong. One of these days I hoped to meet a woman who could satisfy my sexual urges and could keep my balls in a vice to stop me from straying. Then I'd be happy."You need to stop that," Nikita threatened me. "My fiancé cheated on me. I'm not going to put up with it from you.""I already promised them I'd go out at least once," I reasoned. "You wouldn't want me to treat you like that.""I'm not them," she bit her lower lip. "This roving eye of yours has got to stop and soon." See; a license to cheat. I really liked Nikita and I wanted to make an effort to keep her happy. Somehow I could keep my libido under some kind of restraint; for 80 days. Then my co-workers at Havenstone would own me like their prison bitch, providing I was still alive."I'll do my best," I promised. We hugged and kissed. She wasn't gone thirty seconds when my phone rang. It was Odette. I told her to come on over so Timothy shot me with his Nerf gun."Cáel, consider having sex with me," Timothy teased."What? I'm not gay," I pouted."Oh, I know but you'll be dead soon so the sexual ambiguity won't be something you have to deal with for long," Timothy laughed."I'll put it on my bucket list," I sighed. "Double-dating with me?""Sure. It isn't like life with you has been dull," Timothy taunted me. I groaned.(Friday)"I have today off," Odette murmured to me as I cut off the alarm. That had to have been the issue she'd been holding back on last night."I have to work; being the first week of my three month internship and all," I sighed."Are you sure I can't convince you to be late?" she gave me a sultry look. She compounded that offer by stretching out, her knees in place so that her ass rose and wiggled suggestively. Last night I had introduced Odette to a form of doggy-style that didn't involve the man trying to drive her skull through the headboard. We had a long, dual-participant, sensual melding of bodies, control passing back and forth until the need for sleep became something she despised even as it took her."Not fair," I groaned into my pillow. When I looked out, she was still giving me that sexually hungry look and wiggling that ass. Why do I even pretend that I can have a normal sex life? I found myself arriving late and changing in the elevator on the way to the Executive Services floor. The two women with me were a viewing gallery I could have done without.Since I put everything on display; remember; no underwear; one of my two fellow travelers felt permitted to rub her hands along my abs while I was pulling my pants on."Goddess, he's hard," she moaned to her companion. "Come, have a feel." I didn't protest. Technically, stripping naked in a public place could get me fired."His back is very nicely defined," the other side as she ran her hands over my back and shoulders. "What is it that you do?""I'm with Executive Services," I replied. "Right now I'm suborned to Product Testing. I teach monkeys to ride unicycles." Their confused looks humored me."Actually, I'm with ES and I'm a gopher; I pick up stuff," I grinned."Oh; you are that guy from the elevator; the kneeling man," the first woman exclaimed. "They said you were funny. Goddess, our man sure is hot, but he is so dull.""Let me guess; you are with the Financial Investigations Unit?" I said. Trent."Yes," she smiled. Orgy time. "He's just as good looking, but you are so much more fun. My sister can't wait for you to become available.""Sister?" I prodded."Daphne Pale," she smiled suggestively yet again. My face lit up."Daphne?" I caught the lady off-guard by hugging her. "I think Daphne is great," I stepped back. "She's really nice to me. She's smart, gives good advice and treats me like I'm something more than a walking, breathing annoyance. What's your name?""Brielle," she informed me."Beautiful name," I remarked, as I went back to dressing."Do they let you see other women; besides those of ES?" the second woman questioned."I don't see any Havenstone women for 79 more days," I stated. "Corporate policy. After that, all requests for hunting licenses are submitted to Desiree; non-lethal weaponry only until I develop more refined survival skills."Blink. Blink."You are joking, right?" Woman Two muttered."Nope. Katrina feels it will be a great third quarter kick-off. Let some women get out of the office for a weekend. Besides, I get to hunt those hunting me. I think it will be fun, don't you?" I hummed along."Desiree?" the second woman asked for clarification as she pulled out her phone. I nodded. The doors opened; my floor; so I stepped out and hustled to Katrina's office with only seconds to spare. The meeting was normal, right up until Dora adjusted my tie as we were exiting the office."Where did you dress? A closet with the lights out?" she teased."In the elevator on the way up," I confessed. "Daphne, I met your sister; Brielle," in case she had more than one. "She felt up my stomach and I made her laugh," I added."You let her touch you?" Tigger inquired."Cáel, did you come to work dressed like you normally do?" Daphne teased."Yep," sighed."So you were naked in the elevator," Violet snickered."Yep," I confirmed."You should be relocated for that," Fabiola sneered."Damn Fabiola, why do you; what would he be relocated for? Getting dressed?" Paula groaned."He was naked in front of an employee," Fabiola explained."Two actually," I clarified. "They both did touch my naked flesh. It was a bonding experience.""Did you do any actual 'bonding'?" Dora winked."I hugged Brielle, but that was only because she was Daphne's sister and I'm not allowed to hug Daphne at this time," I answered."You can hug me; in a purely platonic way," Daphne murmured. We were at Buffy's desk; I was working with her today."Okay," I nodded. I took a single stride to Daphne. She closed with me and I put my arms around her waist. Daphne put her hands on my shoulders. Our heads got closer and closer. I let my hands roam higher up her back and through her long locks.Nose touched nose, I ran my hands through her hair until I tickled the back of her ears. Daphne's lips parted and her tongue played along the edges. I let my breath play along her cheeks as I worked to her left ear. I felt a sharp pain in my right ass."Ow!" I squalled; after I pulled away from Daphne's ear.I tried to fully spin around, but Daphne wasn't letting go. I caught sight of a furious Buffy, small knife in hand, burning holes in me with her eyes.

Have we lost touch with our ancient roots of plant medicine? Author Michael Purvis joins Brad Szollose on Awakened Nation to discuss tribal medicine traditions like Ayahuasca (pronounced 'eye-ah-WAH-ska'), Cannabis a.k.a. GATUNLATE and Peyote, and how the modern world is slowly starting to embrace the trauma healing qualities of each. Michael shares his own journey of returning from war, suffering from PTSD, being homeless, and eventually discovering the tools of journaling and ancient plant medicine. This is an amazing episode of healing, and an authentic discussion on spirituality, purpose and healing. ABOUT MICHAEL PURVIS: Michael Purvis was born in San Francisco, California to Elizabeth FitzGerald and James Purvis and quickly moved to England forming his early school years. His family moved back to The United States by the time Michael reached the 3rd grade. As a kid growing up in San Rafael, California, he gravitated towards Dungeons and Dragons with friends, played music and was in the Boy Scouts. His first introduction to Native American Spirituality was as a Cub Scout Camp counselor at Camp Tamarancho in Fairfax, California. Conversing with a Medicine Man named John Iron Eagle, a Blackfoot Chief, Michael attended his first sweat lodge ceremony as a teenager. A combat veteran of The Persian Gulf War, Michael healed his PTSD through native plant medicine and spirituality. Presently, he is happily married to his wife Marina, while raising two step-children Michael and Sofia in Northern Colorado. Michael is basically a modern Renaissance Man in a lot of ways practicing magician, carpenter and avid skier. Monday, 29 July 2024   So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Matthew 1:22   “And this all has come to pass that may be fulfilled that having been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying...” (CG).   In the previous verse, the messenger noted to Joseph that the Child's name was to be Jesus because He would save His people from their sins. Now, the narrative continues, saying, “And this all has come to pass that may be fulfilled that having been spoken by the Lord.”   Matthew will now cite an Old Testament prophecy. It is one that was uttered by the Lord, Yehovah, to King Ahaz in Isaiah 7. The words of prophecy, as recorded by Matthew, are said to be fulfilled (has come to pass) in the coming of Christ Jesus. And yet, it was a prophecy given to Ahaz about a matter that would be fulfilled at his time.   As such, it is a prophecy with a dual significance. This is not a stretch by Matthew, looking to shove the coming of Christ Jesus into an obscure and already fulfilled verse. Rather, it is a prophecy that was understood all along to be messianic in nature.   That is evidenced in the words of the coming verse. That we can know this was anticipated to refer to the Messiah will be explained then. For now, Matthew continues by saying that the prophecy was spoken by the Lord “through the prophet, saying...”   The Lord spoke to Israel, but He did so indirectly through Isaiah. The words that lead to the prophecy say –   “Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 ‘Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.' 12 But Ahaz said, ‘I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!' 13 Then he said, ‘Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?'” Isaiah 7:10-13   The Lord first spoke to Ahaz directly. The words are in the second person, singular. When Ahaz punted and refused to ask for a sign, the Lord, through Isaiah, responded to the “house of David.” Though Ahaz was the king, the address by Isaiah is made in the second person plural.   The meaning is that not only will there be an immediate fulfillment of his words to Ahaz, but the words are intended to extend to the House of David in a more relevant way. This is only implied, but the implication was understood to be there, nonetheless.   Life application: When reading the Bible, there are themes that may repeat, even if it seems that what was prophesied was already fulfilled in the past. For example, the prophets speak of the fall of Babylon in the Old Testament, something that actually occurred in the past.   Babylon came against Israel according to prophecy. The Babylonians destroyed the land and took the people captive to Babylon. Eventually, Babylon was destroyed according to the prophecies stated in the Old Testament.   One could wipe his hands and say, Wah-lah, that's the end of that. However, the New Testament also refers to the destruction of Babylon, even citing the Old Testament. For example –   “‘And look, here comes a chariot of men with a pair of horsemen!' Then he answered and said, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen! And all the carved images of her gods He has broken to the ground.'” Isaiah 21:9   “And another angel followed, saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.'” Revelation 14:8   The Lord is repeating themes and historical events to show that there is a system by which things are accomplished. Nothing is random or haphazard. The Lord works out events in a physical realm while also repeating these things in the spiritual realm.   A way that this occurs is through typology. To understand this more fully, you can go to the sermons from the Superior Word and see where typology from one story directs the flow of events in future accounts. The Lord explains this through Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes –   “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9   Things will repeat so that when they occur, we can know that the directive hand of the Lord has brought them to pass.   Lord God, help us to see the wonderful things that You have laid out in Your word, even things that are still hidden and waiting to be uncovered. May we look for Your guiding hand in the unfolding of history by looking back to what has been. In doing this, we can know that You are directing us and all events according to a wise and detailed plan. All is well because You have it all under control. Amen.
