Air Date 7/12/2025 The idea of the founders was to separate and balance the powers of the federal government and that, as Madison wrote, that ambition would counteract ambition. The problem we face now is that the ambition of the Supreme Court is to give as much power as possible to the executive branch because, ironically, they seem to be nostalgic for a king. It's becoming clearer that many of President Trump's supporters are realizing how badly they're getting shafted by his big budget bill and other leading initiatives. Senator Mitch McConnell just privately admitted that many Republicans are getting major blowback from “people back home” about the bill's deep Medicaid cuts, adding that “they'll get over it.” A stunning Fox News poll just found that a majority of white men without a college degree oppose the bill. Crucially, these voters make up “the heart of Trump's base.” Amazingly, Trump's own pollster just bluntly suggested that Trump voters are feeling betrayal. On top of all that, Trump supporters again and again have been horrified to learn that his deportations are victimizing immigrants they like. And the tariffs are already hurting Trump country. So how badly are his working class voters getting hit? To find out, we talked to economist Jared Bernstein, who paints a dark picture of the impact they're feeling from all these policies taken together. Add it all up, Bernstein concludes, and the Trump-GOP lack of concern as their voters learn they're taking it on the chin is “mind-boggling.” Looking for More from the DSR Network? President Trump really wants the Senate to pass the “big beautiful bill” that has now gotten through the House. But a number of GOP Senators are, for now, speaking uncomfortable truths about that massive budget measure: It would balloon the deficit and slash spending on the poor and working class, largely to fund a massive tax cut for the wealthy. And right on cue, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt just delivered two ugly rants on Fox News that expose how this ruse works. One of them threatens GOP senators who oppose the bill. The other monumentally misleads about its fiscal impact. We talked to Paul Waldman, co-author of White Rural Rage and a regular chronicler of how badly Trump-GOP policies harm Republican voters. He explains the real aims of the broader Trump project, how it victimizes MAGA country, and why Republicans might struggle to pull off their usual scam this time around. After President Donald Trump threatened to single out Apple with tariffs, he offered remarks to reporters that undercut his case. First he seemed to say this would apply to many iPhone makers, but then reiterated he'd said this straight to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a potentially serious abuse of power. Then Trump said U.S.-manufactured jobs would not result in higher prices due to automation, but this concedes that the manufacturing work he hopes tariffs will create are low-level jobs that might get replaced. And then he all-but-admitted that his threat to get companies to “eat” the cost of his tariffs really could mean potentially higher prices for consumers. All these oddities taken together wreck the fraudulent arguments he's been making. We talked to Monica Potts, the new class politics reporter at The New Republic, who usefully synthesizes all of it to explain what's wrong with Trump-MAGA manufacturing nostalgia and why the Trump-GOP agenda comprehensively works against his stated goal of creating good American jobs. Let's talk about Trump, GOP Medicaid spending, and past being prologue....
President Trump looks increasingly vulnerable on the very thing that helped him win the election: Rising costs. On Thursday, Trump announced that his tariffs on Mexico and Canada will begin on March 4th. Yet only hours later, a new Bloomberg poll found that 59 percent expect the tariffs to drive up prices further. Only 31 percent say they'll be good for the economy. Meanwhile, Republicans are starting to cancel their town halls, fearing voter blowback over Elon Musk's rampage. We talked to Andrew Bates, a former White House communications adviser, who argues that the Trump-GOP political mess will only get worse once Republicans start cutting Medicaid—and says Democrats have a big opening to capitalize. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmEven in the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, most Americans thought Donald Trump was a good steward of the economy. This misplaced faith has been key to his political durability. But after just one month of indiscriminately firing federal workers, illegally reneging on federal spending commitments, and making erratic threats to tariff the bejesus out of our trading partners, his economic approval has fallen under water. So what's going on?In this episode, Matt and Brian discuss:* Are people really just annoyed that Trump has ignored the price of eggs and other staple goods?* Is it that by mistreating people and crippling important services, he's created an unflattering news environment that has soured people on him generally?* Or might he have actually tipped the economy into recession at lightning speed? Then, behind the paywall, why does the explanation matter? Did Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries happen to land on exactly the right strategy to oppose Trump in his second term? If people are actually mad about the cruelty and lawlessness, does it suggest Democrats should shift their focus from egg trolling to forcing Trump back into regular order? And to that end, are Democrats prepared to force a confrontation over the rule of law as the deadline to fund the government approaches? All that, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. Further reading:* Brian on why losing popularity so quickly puts a big dent in Trump's plan to become an autocrat. * Matt on how foreign leaders on the receiving end of Trump's tariff's threats can exploit this weakness by calling his bluff. * The perils of the Trump-GOP plan to cut Medicaid.
The US audit board has already been forced to revise its priorities as the Trump administration begins to reshape the federal government. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board pulled an auditor disclosure rule that was set for SEC approval earlier this month. The audit board opted to delay finalizing another project that would expand how auditors consider the financial impact of their clients' law violations days after Donald Trump's November election win. But deeper changes might be coming to the Enron-era regulator, which Congress designed to be an auditor watchdog. Republicans previously targeted the PCAOB through legislation and budget proposals that would have eliminated the independent regulator. Project 2025, considered a playbook for the second Trump administration, similarly called for the SEC to take over the board's work. Any major changes in board leadership could usher in the third swing in priorities at the regulator since 2017. Ally Zimmerman is an associate professor of business administration at Florida State University and a former fellow at both the PCAOB and Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees the board's work. In this episode of Talking Tax, Zimmerman spoke with Bloomberg Tax reporter Amanda Iacone about the PCAOB's future and what auditors and the investors who depend on their work can expect in the coming months. Original air date: December 6, 2024 Points for candor to Senator Tommy Tuberville. On Thursday, he admitted he thinks Trump should vet his own nominees, suggesting the Senate GOP should forget about playing its advice and consent role. That's a stark admission about what MAGA actually expects from Senate Republicans. Yet revelations about Trump's pick for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, are so damning that Republicans are finding him impossible to rubber-stamp, and he's hanging in the balance. We chatted with Salon's Amanda Marcotte, author of a new piece about Trump, Hegseth and the GOP. She explains how Tuberville said the quiet part out loud, how Trump is expressly trying to build a cabinet of misogynists, and how that's backfiring, perhaps forcing Republicans to thwart his worst excesses. These are heady times for MAGA. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Elon Musk are teaming up to slash the government to ribbons as part of Musk's new Department of Government Efficiency. What could give MAGA a bigger thrill than that high-wattage duo? But Politico reports that some Republicans quietly fear that Greene's involvement could become a major distraction from the Trump/GOP agenda. We talked to tech writer Gil Duran, a close observer of Musk's machinations, who explains why the right-wing “techbro” worldview is so dangerous—and how Greene could make it even more combustible. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (11/06/2024): 3:05pm- Donald Trump will be the 47th President of the United States! At 5:30am ET Wednesday morning, The New York Times declared Donald Trump the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election—when he surpassed the critical 270 electoral vote threshold by winning Wisconsin. As of now, it appears Trump will win all seven key swing states and is projected to win the national popular vote—the first Republican to reach that mark since 2004. 3:15pm- On Tuesday night, with just 90-minutes before polling locations closed in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump called into The Rich Zeoli Show and delivered a pertinent message to Pennsylvanians: “You have to stay in line...you have an absolute legal right. And get that vote in." President Trump also joked: “I'd love your ratings to go down to zero…I'd love everyone to get off their phone and run down and vote!” 3:30pm- Ted Christian—Republican Presidential Advisor & former State Director for Pennsylvania in the 2016 Trump Presidential Campaign—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss what it was like being at Trump Campaign Headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida during last night's big election win! 4:05pm- Michael Whatley—Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap last night's big election win. Not only did Donald Trump recapture the presidency, but Republicans also gained control of the Senate and seem to be in great position to retain the House of Representatives as well. 4:15pm- Rich, Matt, and Justin recap yesterday's crazy Election Day broadcast—specifically when President Donald Trump randomly called in during the 6 o'clock hour. Plus, we debate: what's President Trump's official McDonald's order? According to Jared Kushner it's: a Big Mac, Filet-O-Fish, large fries, a vanilla milkshake, and of course a diet Coke! 4:30pm- Speaking from Howard University, Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech. 4:35pm- Cliff Maloney— Founder of The Pennsylvania Chase—joins The Rich Zeoli to recap last night's results. To learn more about The Pennsylvania Chase, visit: https://www.pachase.com 5:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates— Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to react to last night's election win! PLUS who might be receiving cabinet positions in Trump's 2025 Administration? Dr. Coates is the author of the book: “The Battle for the Jewish State: How Israel—and America—Can Win” which features a forward from Senator Ted Cruz. 5:20pm- REPLAY On Tuesday night, with just 90-minutes before polling locations closed in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump called into The Rich Zeoli Show and delivered a pertinent message to Pennsylvanians: “You have to stay in line...you have an absolute legal right. And get that vote in." President Trump also joked: “I'd love your ratings to go down to zero…I'd love everyone to get off their phone and run down and vote!” 5:40pm- MEDIA MELTDOWN. Sunny Hostin of The View baselessly claimed that Donald Trump will create “internment camps” once he returns to the White House. PLUS Keith Olbermann accused Russia of “committing an act of war”—blaming them for Trump's victory in several key swing states. 6:05pm- Linda Kerns—Attorney & Pennsylvania Election Integrity Counsel for the Republican National Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap Election Day in Pennsylvania and Donald Trump's big win! 6:30pm- MSNBC host Joy Reid bizarrely claimed that Queen Latifah's endorsement is proof that Kamala Harris ran a flawless presidential campaign. 6:50pm- Jeff Bezos, billionaire founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post, posted on X: “Big congratulations to our 45th and now 47th President on an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory. No nation has bigger opportunities ...
The Chapo 2024 Elections team returns to the pod to look at the state of the presidential race post-Democratic National Convention. Kamala's positioning in the election remains strong, but what does her convention performance tell us about a potential Harris administration? Is the Trump GOP really bungling this? Exactly how shitty is JD Vance as a VP pick, and is Tim Walz committing Dog Fraud? And just how much can the Democrats cover their ears and pretend Gaza doesn't exist after the convention? All this and more discussed in today's ‘sode.
