Brian Paul: Helping Veterans and First Responders Turn Their Lives Around The struggles of Veterans and First Responders is not something that would be easily understood unless you have served. Their plight, as always, is eclipsed by the triumphs and wins, but at the end of the day, those of them who suffer from the burdens they carry may find themselves losing a grip on living. In this episode, join Patti Katter as she welcomes back Brian Paul from Veterans 4 Life USA as they talk about how the organization can help struggling Veterans and First Responders get back on their feet. Here's a breakdown of what to expect in this episode: How Brian got started to helping people The process of how they help. On covering the cost About Equine Therapy Connecting with the program On taking that tiny step forward About Brian Paul: Brian wanted to find a way to help other Veterans and First Responders turn their life around and find hope when all seems lost. He started “Veterans 4 Life USA,” a charity that connects Veterans and First Responders with resources, including treatment, therapeutic events, equine therapy, retreats, job training and placement, and spouse support groups. About Veterans for Life: "Veterans for life is really about community, and families that really support our Veterans and First Responders both with the problems they've got… from start to finish, the process is hopefully, really a good, strong kind of a dramatic change in the individual from the assessment all the way through to employment, and a whole total life change… relatability is what it's all about.” – Brian Paul Find Veterans 4Life USA on . . . "Nothing feels like a chore in the way that it used to, getting up in the morning isn’t so hard because I know that maybe I have work to do but my day is not all about work I am not going to spend the bulk of my day at work away from my dogs and my best friend" Meet Bree! Bree is 26, non binary from Colorado, USA. Bree, Guilly and the two doggos Zeus and Apollo have just started living on the road. Bree graduated college was working in they field, had a cool apartment and a good community of friends but knew that there was something more. With an apartment lease coming to an end Bree knew they needed to do something big and needed something to change. Something I am sure most people can relate to is working so much that you are so tired so when you get time off, you are too exhausted to actually do the things you want to do. "I can definitely say I am happier, I am in love with this new life. The most important things, which we have found rapidly are not really things they are just there. It’s a huge jump, it’s a lifestyle change, its not only that it’s a departure from this norm that we as a collective are conditioned to believe is the way to go, the right way. That change feels big and scary and sometimes you just need one more vote to tell you to do it" In the podcast: Bree's story The why? How do you make an income on the road? What’s the plan? The cost of van renovations and time What is it like travelling with your two dogs? Who is one other person in the van life community who inspires you and that we should follow and check out? Brian Paul served in the Oklahoma National Guard 45th Infantry; when the Murrah Building was bombed in an act of domestic terrorism in 1995, he was deployed to the site and worked among other responders in the devastation, receiving the State Activation Medal and Humanitarian Medal. Desiring to continue serving the public, Brian became a career fire fighter and EMT. He had a great life with a beautiful wife, son, and home. The stress of shift work, poor sleep, and encountering death and trauma regularly at his busy station accumulated. This man once seen as a hero began to drink heavily. Brian's clarity of thought diminished, and he had difficulty thinking clearly on his calls--a crucial asset for emergency workers. Failing health due to alcoholism brought Brian close to death: his liver was damaged and his bone marrow was even shutting down. At the lowest point of his life--homeless and barely alive--Brian finally accepted lifesaving help through a 90-day rehabilitation facility, where he chose life. He was successful in this recovery effort because of his faith in a Higher Power, love for his son and mother, and his adherence to a proper treatment program. He founded Veterans 4 Life USA to help reach out to struggling men and women who are serving or have served in military or first responder professions that expose them to intense trauma and long-term stress. Recently Brian fulfilled his dream of playing semi-pro football, demonstrating the full recovery from his previous state: he is in shape, full of energy, and impassioned to help as many brothers and sisters fighting their own battles as possible. Join Brian as we discuss organization expansion, recovery and the impact of your story, Veterans 4 Life USA runs out of Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Phoenix, and Tulsa. At the heart of the organization is Brian Paul and his ever-extending network of resources. Brian Paul, President, and Founder of Veterans4LifeUSA served in the 45th Infantry Division as a rifleman, machine gunner, and mortarman. His team provided security and other services at the Alfred P Murrah bombing site following the terrorist attack on April 19th, 1995. He has also served as a firefighter and EMT in Kansas City. Brian Paul enjoyed success in both the military and in his time as a Firefighter and EMT but like many others, he ran head-on into serious and life-threatening problems largely due to his “no quit” personality. He believed in his mission of service even when he knew it was costing him his health and eventually would likely cost him his life. Brian began dealing with the extreme stresses of his job by self-medicating with alcohol. This, coupled with extraordinary stress from being a first responder, led him to a very real and dangerous problem with post-traumatic stress known as PTSD. This problem led to not only rapidly deteriorating health but also to divorce and even homelessness. Brian was simply fighting for his life. With God's help and the help of his family, Brian was finally able to find the correct and proper help he desperately needed and with very little time to spare. Brian went through an intensive 90-day treatment program in the Smokey Mountains that dealt with his PTSD and alcohol problems simultaneously. Brian was extremely successful with this treatment for three main reasons: He was finally receiving the correct and proper treatment specifically for him. He used the same intense focus and determination that made him a successful soldier and firefighter and directed it towards his treatment. He has an unbreakable connection with his higher power as he viewed it. Brian has been sober, happy, and successful since Nov. 20, 2015, and focuses sharply on helping fellow soldiers and first responders, including law enforcement, avoid and overcome similar serious obstacles he himself has experienced and overcome. Brian started Veterans4LifeUSA to help other veterans and first responders who struggle with PTSD and addiction. The focus of Veterans4LifeUSA is to connect veterans, first responders, and their families to resources where they can find healing. They also create events and environments where veterans and first responders can build camaraderie and fellowship with others. We hope to continue and build relationships and provide resources for veterans and first responders who struggle no matter where they may be. veterans4lifeusa@gmail.com Facebook
