Our guest, Sue McShane, is a valued member of The Aging Project Community whose personal journey shows the power of self-advocacy, self-awareness, and taking small, consistent steps toward better health. At 60, Sue is feeling stronger, healthier, and more empowered than ever, but it wasn't always that way. After years of struggling with mental health, trauma, and chronic health concerns, she discovered genetic testing, glucose monitoring, and strength training, which have helped her optimise her health and transition off antidepressants after 27 years. Sue shares how understanding her DNA has been the missing piece in her health puzzle, proving that health isn't just about how you feel—it's about knowing what's happening beneath the surface. Key Episode Highlights 1️⃣ Health is a life-long journey and there's always more to learn Sue thought she knew everything she needed about health—until she discovered The Aging Project Podcast and started learning about genetic testing and personalised health. Health is never “done.” It's a lifelong process of learning, adapting, and making informed choices. Symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, weight gain, cholesterol and anxiety were the calling cards that moved her into action. 2️⃣ From Trauma to Transformation Childhood trauma & long-term stress – Sue grew up in a violent home, which she believes triggered long-term health issues. Spent 27 years on antidepressants after being told by a GP that “everyone needs them.” Battled postnatal depression and chronic infections, leading to years of antibiotic use. Menopause became another turning point—when she sought medical help, she was offered more antidepressants and a statin. That's when she decided to take control of her health. 3️⃣ The Tools That Changed Everything Sue took inspiration from The Aging Project and began exploring: ✔ Fitgenes testing – Helped her understand her genetic predispositions and vitamin needs. ✔ Glucose monitoring (Vively) – Showed how her body responded to different foods. ✔ Strength training – Lifting heavy weights helped her build muscle and improve metabolism. ✔ Nutritional focus – Adjusting B12 and B6 levels played a key role in her transition off antidepressants. 4️⃣ What We Need to Know About Our Health Many GPs aren't trained in menopause, genetics or nutrition Genetic testing is no longer just for celebrities—it's an accessible, powerful tool for understanding your unique health risks. Health is like a jigsaw puzzle—you don't get the full picture all at once, but every piece helps. Your DNA is the missing piece—without it, you're guessing about what your body really needs. Key Takeaway Sue's story is proof that it's never too late to take charge of your health. Healing isn't a one-time fix—it's an ongoing journey, and small, intentional steps make all the difference. Understanding your DNA is a game-changer. It gives you the power to personalise your health, prevent disease, and make smarter choices for longevity. Want to Learn More?

Today, we're talking with Andrea Clevenger, Community Response Team Case Manager for Mental Health Association Oklahoma. Andrea started with the agency as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist on the original Street Outreach team nearly two years ago before being promoted to Case Manager on our Community Response team – a partnership with the City of Oklahoma City. Both teams are critical components to ending homelessness in our state. She, herself, experienced homelessness for many years as she struggled with myriad addictions, which, along with an unwavering commitment to service, contributes to her professional success. It was an honor to talk in-depth with Andrea about her journey of housing, healing and wholeness, and to learn about the mottos that guide her – and in turn, guide her clients. We are grateful to have Andrea on, today, as she shares her story with us. She is brave. She is genuine. She is a joy to share space with. She referenced her friend who works at 988, and we'd be remiss not to remind the listeners that 988 is a free resource staffed with mental health experts who can assist you or someone you know with a mental health crisis. After recovering from CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome aka myalgic encephalomyelitis) Miguel Bautista felt like he had a new lease on life. At the height of his illness he was unable to walk or sit up in bed and needed meals blended so he could drink them. Now he is running marathons, traveling, spending quality time with loved ones and running a successful CFS recovery program. His journey through chronic illness was extremely tumultuous, but led to several profound realizations about how he was living his life. It also re-defined his life's purpose moving forward. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast, Miguel walks us through his incredible journey through the depths of chronic illness and back. Realizing his immune system was overactive was a turning point in his journey. He elected admittance into in-patient psychiatric care to work on calming his hypersensitive nervous system. Through the use of medication and therapy, he was back on his feet within a month, experiencing long-lasting recovery. After getting out of the hospital, Miguel began sharing his experience online. He quickly discovered the methods he had used to recover and the lessons he learned about neuroplasticity could be applied to other people. He now operates CFS Recovery, offering both free and paid coaching to individuals living through similar circumstances. He tells us about the three fundamental principals of his recovery program: determining your individual stress threshold, understanding the base problem of a hyperactive nervous system, and recognizing that your success will be dictated by how you respond to flaring symptoms. Check out Miguel's program at https://youtube.com/@cfsrecovery, and hear his full story on this week's podcast! PlayWatch the episode on YouTube, or listen on your favorite podcast platform. The engaging story of Intellivision, an overlooked videogame system from the late 1970s and early 1980s whose fate was shaped by Mattel, Atari, and countless others who invented the gaming industry. Astrosmash, Snafu, Star Strike, Utopia—do these names sound familiar to you? No? Maybe? They were all videogames created for the Intellivision videogame system, sold by Mattel Electronics between 1979 and 1984. This system was Atari's main rival during a key period when videogames were moving from the arcades into the home. In Intellivision: How a Videogame System Battled Atari and Almost Bankrupted Barbie® (MIT Press, 2024), Tom Boellstorff and Braxton Soderman tell the fascinating inside story of this overlooked gaming system. Along the way, they also analyze Intellivision's chips and code, games, marketing and business strategies, organizational and social history, and the cultural and economic context of the early US games industry from the mid-1970s to the great videogame industry crash of 1983. While many remember Atari, Intellivision has largely been forgotten. As such, Intellivision fills a crucial gap in videogame scholarship, telling the story of a console that sold millions and competed aggressively against Atari. Drawing on a wealth of data from both institutional and personal archives and over 150 interviews with programmers, engineers, executives, marketers, and designers, Boellstorff and Soderman examine the relationship between videogames and toys—an under-analyzed aspect of videogame history—and discuss the impact of home computing on the rise of videogames, the gendered implications of play and videogame design at Mattel, and the blurring of work and play in the early games industry. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design at the IU International University for Applied Science, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal Titel kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist. Many people today don't realize that in the 1950s, pinball had a bad reputation as a gambler's game and was as illegal as one-armed bandits. In Portland, shady underworld characters supplied Oregonians with plenty of both. "When I was in Young Women's, one of the themes was... I'm a daughter of Heavenly Father who loves us and we love Him. You always say those things but I never really thought about what it really meant. And then I really thought about it one time, like, I'm a daughter of Heavenly Father. Which means if I have inherited things from my earthly parents, I must have inherited things from my heavenly parents. That means I have a divine potential. We all have divine potential! Which means that we can do things that we cannot even imagine. There are people doing things around us that we never thought possible until somebody does it. Just the knowledge that I am a daughter of my Heavenly Father and Mother and that they really love me. They know me. They know everything about me. They know more about me than I know. Knowing that gives me so much strength. So now every day I use this as an affirmation. I say to myself, I'm a daughter of heavenly parents. I have divine potential. I have the power to overcome everything. I have Christ -like love inside of me. I receive this love from others and I give this love to other people. Doing this makes me strong, it helps me keep the commandments." https://www.plantwhys.com/comeback

Today is the final day of my series of conversations with Jorja Jamison. Jorja's book description summarizes her journey so well, "Imagine landing your dream job as an addiction psychologist at the nation's most famous alcohol and drug treatment facility. You've spent eight grueling years earning your Master's and Doctorate degrees in a program you were never supposed to get into, and you've been identified as a rising star in the field. At every turn, leaders are praising you for your abilities. There's just one catch: you have been doing all this while secretly battling your own addiction. For the next three years, you lead a painful double life, presenting to the world as a competent clinician, but privately, you are spiraling into hell. Then, one day, everything falls apart, and you must learn what it truly means to heal from an addiction."Let's get back to Jorja.#embracefamilyrecovery #recovery #addiction #author #jorjajamison #woundedhealing #hazeldenbettyfordfoundation #addictionrecovery #addictionawareness #addictiontreatment #addictions #familyrecovery #familyrecoverycoach #familyrecoverycoaching #familyaddiction #familyaddictionrecovery #recoverysupport #recoverysupportgroup #recoverysupportservices #womenpodcaster #podcast #addictionpodcast #recoverypodcast #recoverystories #recoverycommunity #YouTubechannelSupport the showClick here to grab your copy of Healthy Strategies for Family Members to Cope and Even Thrive Through Addiction and receive my weekly newsletter.
