HHAUSA continues to be blessed with some amazing additions to our family and this guy fit right in from day one. US Army Veteran Chris Norton was selected as the 2023 A3G Initiative Grant Winner in a story that could only have been written by our Creator. When Aaron Ritter of Limb-Itless Outdoors enthusiastically told me about Norton, it confirmed once again why we do what we do at HHAUSA to impact the lives of others. Losing his lower leg in a motorcycle accident, Chris's life would be changed forever being an amputee and some dark days lay head for the Freehold New Jersey native. In those pivotal moments of our story, they can go one of two ways. Thankfully, Norton pulled himself out of the darkness, going onto become a firefighter and is now just months away from being an EMT as well. He's also found healing, community and new life in archery.During his time recovering, he purchased an entry level compound bow, knowing that he could use a new hobby to get his mind off his injury and get him outdoors. While he had hunted as a kid, archery was new to him and he was hooked. After a discussion with Ritter about saddle hunting, Chris applied for the grant and was unanimously selected by Aaron and his board, all picking Norton without discussing the candidates with each other. After an emotional and overwhelming presentation of the nearly $15,000 in gear at his fire station by Ritter, Chris now had his sights set on a Texas whitetail hunt in late September.I'll let him tell the rest of the story but suffice it to say, we will be seeing a lot more of Chris Norton in the years ahead and I look forward to meeting him face to face and sharing the 3D range with him soon. You can find Chris on Facebook and Instagram and learn more about the A3G Initiative at https://www.limbitlessoutdoors.com/a3g-initiativeFor more information about HHAUSA and how you can support our mission, visit www.hhausa.orgTo purchases HHAUSA hats, shirts, challenge coins and tumblers, visit www.hhasports.com

In this episode, you'll hear the recording of a presentation that was delivered at a 2018 Leadership Under Fire National Conference in Evanston, Illinois. The team was humbled by the caliber of leaders who contributed to the event and the types of leaders who rigorously contemplated the moral, mental and physical aspects of mission-oriented leadership and optimal human performance. To include our guest in this episode, retired Chicago Fire Commissioner Bob Hoff.  A third-generation firefighter, Bob Hoff started his career as a Cadet with the Evergreen Park Illinois Fire Department in 1972. In 1976, he was hired as an EMT with the Chicago Fire Department and in 1977 he entered the Chicago Fire Academy as a Firefighter/EMT. Hoff served in some of Chicago's busiest fire companies throughout his career. He worked in the Bureau of Operations as a Firefighter /EMT, Lieutenant, Captain, and Battalion Chief. He also served as the Director of Training for the Chicago FD and the 1st District Chief in Chicago's downtown high-rise district. He later served as the Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Operations, 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner and Fire Commissioner. He retired from the CFD in 2012 after nearly 36 years of service. Chief Hoff then went on to serve as the Deputy Chief and Chief of the Carol Stream Illinois Fire District until his retirement on January 1, 2020. Hoff's brother, Raymond, was a 32-year veteran of the Chicago FD. His grandfather, Joseph Hoff, retired as a captain in 1936. And his father, Thomas Hoff, was a battalion chief who was killed while fighting a blaze in a South Side apartment building in 1962. His son, Andy Hoff, is an active member of FFPM with the Downers Grove Illinois Fire Department. Uncles, cousins, nephews and brothers-in-laws are all current and retired members of the Fire Service. Notably, his family's service and sacrifice inspired the movie, “Backdraft."

Don Porth began his career in the fire service in 1980 as a student and volunteer firefighter in Happy Valley, Oregon. In 1983, he would be hired as a paid Firefighter/EMT with the City of Salem, Oregon. One year later, in 1984, Don would be hired by Portland Fire & Rescue, where he would serve for the next 27 years. Don worked as a front line Firefighter/EMT until 1990, when he would be promoted to the Fire Marshal's Office and be assigned to the Public Education Unit, providing community education and public outreach. He would take on the specialty of working with youth involved in fire-setting behavior. This led to many other opportunities and involvements regionally and nationally, including 23 years of oversight of a non-profit organization addressing youth fire-setting behavior at the national level. Don created an innovation in education with Portland Fire, the Safety Learning Center and Fire Museum in the Historic Belmont Firehouse. Using a 1912 firehouse as a backdrop, professionally designed exhibits were created and built to educate the public on their vulnerability to fire and injury. Solutions to safety were woven into the rich stories of Portland Fire's existence in the community since the 1850's. Since retirement from Portland Fire in 2011, Don has continued to consult and work on numerous fire service projects locally and nationally. Also, Don has organized and shared the rich history of Portland Fire & Rescue through research and organization of the historic documents of Portland Fire. He has created a web site (PortlandFireHistory.com) to share this information but also does talks or consults individually with those having questions. Don has also been heavily involved in the recognition of Portland's Fallen Firefighters, members who have died in service to the community. In his personal life, Don's marriage that began in 1984 continues. Two sons and four grandchildren have grown from the life he and his wife have built. www.PortlandFireHistory.com All production by Cody Maxwell. Artwork by Cody Maxwell.
