Last episode, we said we love you and to take care of yourself. That's more true than ever.  This week, Tara and Kris trade stories about the week of the US election, its aftermath, and more importantly, what comes next. They settle on being pirates. We're still here, folks, and we're going to be here until the wheels fall off this thing. Kris doesn't have a recommendation this week, but Tara has come through with not one but two Christmas romances. Official Recommendations From Tara: A New Leash on Love and Frosted by the Girl Next Door by Jaime Clevenger and Aurora Rey This week, Tara is recommending two Christmas romances that take place in a small Colorado town and run in parallel with each other. A New Leash on Love by Jaime Clevenger and Aurora Rey (Bella Books) is about an interior designer who's back in the hometown she hates, only to fall for Shawn. Shawn is as sweet as the cupcakes her sister bakes for the family business and can't help falling for Kit right back. Frosted by the Girl Next Door by Aurora Rey and Jaime Clevenger (Bold Strokes Books) features Shawn's sister Tara falling for Kit's friend Casey. Casey's new to town and opens a sex shop next door to their cupcake store. Is the shop a town scandal or the best thing that's happened to it in a long time? Read it to find out! Research on aging and extending life and healthspan has ventured beyond humans to our best animal friends – dogs. In less than a year, dog owners may be able to buy a drug that would extend their dog's life and hopefully keep it healthier for longer. Especially for owners of big dogs with short lifespans, this could be welcome news. And what the drug developers learn about dog aging might contribute to learnings on human aging. Scientists are also building some of the first long-term studies on dog health that will provide detailed information and important insights on our pets' lives, and maybe our own. Neuroscientist Celine Halioua founded her company Loyal when she was just 24, and is close to getting FDA approval for the company's first drug. Daniel Promislow, a biogerontologist at Tufts University, founded and leads the Dog Aging Project, collecting data on dogs across the country from all walks of life. The Aspen Institute's executive vice president, Eliot Gerson, moderates this feel-good conversation recorded at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival in June. aspenideas.org

A New Leash on Life with Rachael Gray   An avid animal lover with a passion for helping people, Rachael works tirelessly to make a difference in others and not give up on anyone, as others have done for her.  From an early age, Rachael started abusing drugs and alcohol. First casually, and then eventually more severe. At the age of 20, she found herself addicted to painkillers, and from there, her addiction grew through the years.    In October 2012, Rachael was handed a wake-up call. Addicted to drugs and suffering from severe depression, Rachael tried to take her own life by intentionally overdosing on drugs. After waking from a coma, Rachael was given an ultimatum. She either gets clean or becomes homeless. The choice was up to her.  Knowing deep inside that this wasn't what she wanted for her life, Rachael finally sought treatment to get clean. With the help of her beloved dog, Sasha, who kept her going, Rachael got clean and started to rebuild her life one day at a time.  However, as life goes sometimes, Rachael would find herself put to the ultimate test when she lost her boyfriend and one of her close friends, both to a drug overdose, along with three dogs back-to-back. Knowing that there was no future for her in the past, Rachael fought to stay clean through her heartbreak with everything she had in her and kept moving forward.   Now clean and sober for over ten years, Rachael spends her days helping others find their way to sober living. Her mission is to make a difference by sharing her own experiences with addiction in hopes of helping others get clean and turn away from a life of addiction so that they don't waste years of their life like she did. In addition, she wants to help others understand that they are here for a purpose and that their life is worth living clean and sober.  Knowing firsthand that a dog's companionship can contribute to the well-being of humans, Rachael is also the co-owner of All Tails Wag, a brand of high-quality, handcrafted products for America's furry friends and their families, a company that she started with her mom, who is also one of her best friends.  “It is important to help inspire positivity and strength the bond between humans and pups, and that is what we are doing with All Tails Wag,” says Rachael.   Rachel credits her mom and her dogs for saving her life. “If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be here today.”

There are those moments that impact the entire nation and sometimes the world that we will never forget. Maybe we even remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news. The Oklahoma City Bombing, 911, and the Boston Marathon are just a few. As the days inch by we hear of those lost, those who survived and those injured. More days pass and life resumes its normal pace, except for those who were among the injured and who must find a way to heal, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. On April 15, 2013, Jennifer Kauffman was standing 15' from where the second bomb went off during the Boston Marathon. Years of working to heal later, in a fit of completely out of control road rage, Jennifer found herself chasing down another person who had cut her off in traffic. Gratefully, not only was no one harmed, but it woke her up to herself in a whole new way and the truest healing was able to begin. A big part of Jennifer's healing journey was directing and producing the film There's Got to be More to Life, theresgottobemoretolife.com A film she hope's will help others to move through the transformational process of shifting from surviving to thriving. This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about the City of Philadelphia's recent effort to take back two tunnels in the Kensington section where homeless opiid users were camped out. Dozens set up tents and were using drugs and living in squalor in four tunnels adjacent to a residential neighborhood. The city set up a pilot program designed to take back two of the tunnels- one along Tulip Street, the other along Kensington Avenue. The deadline for the move out was this week. Cherri Gregg sits down with Liz Hersh, Director of the City's Office of Homeless Services, Charito Morales, an outreach worker advocating for the homeless residents of the encampment and Amanda Fury a resident and member of the Somerset Neighbors fpr Better Living to discss the execution of the city's plan, the immediate aftermath and next steps. The Newsmaker of the week is a growing initiative called, "When Black Men Pray." The effort is the brain child of Nathaniel Rogers, a nightclub promoter and business owner. He joined forced with Jonathan Josey, a long time police officer and playwright on an effort to bring Black men together for prayer and support. Cherri sits down with the two men and talk about the need in the community, why it's become so popular and the vision they are working toward. Finally, at Cherri speaks with Robert Rosa of New Leash on Life. He tells his personal story of redemption, but also discusses the non-profits effort to save the lives of dogs once slated for euthanasia, by providing incarcerated men a second chance via job and life skills. Anne Mallore is the author of the book, “New Leash on Life” and owner of Wags, a successful pet motel in upstate NY. After working for over 18 years for a local pet shop, Anne left to join her husband’s business and to be a stay-at-home mom. When the business failed, the love of her German Shepherd drew her back to what she loved doing – working with animals. They sold everything they had and built a successful pet motel in their small Central NY town of Marcellus. Ten years and thousands of pet guests later, they have a thriving business serving the needs of a dog- loving community. Three years ago, Anne published her first book “New Leash on Life”, a story about losing everything and taking what you love and making it your life’s work.
