Guest: Grant Miller. In today's episode Grant Miller talks about the topic of betraying Jesus when one converts to Islam. He explains why a Christian would feel this way and he dives into who Jesus is from an Islamic view point. Grant states: This really was a big question for me and it was something that held me back from converting. As I think about the issue and what I was feeling at the time, I believe it is something that may be holding others back as well. I have seen a number of Muslim Dawaa (those who set up tables and hand out Islamic literature and answer questions) presenters on YouTube talking with people on the street and almost inevitably it gets to the point where the person being talked to is just about ready to convert and say their profession of faith for Islam (Shahada) but something holds them back and inevitably they will say they will think about it and come back. And I believe it is this feeling of well if I convert to Islam will I be betraying Jesus?; that hinders and blocks a lot of people from accepting the truth of Islam. So why do these feelings come about? (Sheima Sumer Series) Well first of all, what is the law of attraction? So basically the Law of Attraction says that what's happening in your outer world experience is simply a reflection of your inner world experience. And your inner world experience would be your thoughts and your feelings. The law of attraction is also referred to as the law of vibration. What this means is that your thoughts, which cause your feelings, create a vibration that you're in. So you could be In a positive vibration or negative vibration and you are going to attract events and objects and situations that match your vibration. So basically your thoughts and your feelings affect your outer world. They affect what you attract. That is the law of attraction. And so your thoughts and your feelings have a frequency and when you feel bad you are emitting a negative frequency and unfortunately your negative frequency will be reflected back to you through certain life events. And if you feel good you have a positive frequency which will attract to you positive life situations. And for example good feelings/good frequencies in order of their power would be love, gratitude, joy, hopeful expectation and satisfaction. Good feelings make you feel empowered. Bad feelings include depression, hatred, jealousy, anxiety, guilt and anger. Of course we have bad feelings sometimes but the idea is to recognize your bad feelings and do something to feel better and to shift your frequency or vibration. Another interesting point is that if we think about something that we do not want for a long period of time or with great emotion, then we are likely to attract what we do not want. So the law of attraction teaches us to think about what we want; Focus on what you want, not what you don't want. Because if you think about debt-if you're in debt and you think about your debt then you attract more debt. Instead you want to think of attracting more money, of abundance. So the law of attraction which was really publicized by the Secret movie and Secret book is saying that we can have what we want in life but we need to stay in a positive frequency or vibration, which is created by our thoughts and our feelings. So your thoughts cause your feelings. One of the things that the law of attraction says is that the little things often come the fastest and easiest because with little things, for some reason, we have less resistance to their arrival and we also believe they will come, and they come, because we see them as being little. So again the law of attraction is saying that your inner thoughts and feelings directly impact your outer life events/things that you attract in your outer world. So, does Islam agree with the law of attraction philosophy? In my opinion yes it does. A very clear verse of the Quran that supports the law of attraction is found in chapter 13 verse 11 which states: "Surely Allah does not change the conditions in which a people are in until they change that which is in themselves" (13:11). Very clearly stating that if you want your outer conditions to change, then you need to change what is inside yourself, which is of course going to be your thoughts and your feelings, your inner self, your inner world. Another verse of the Quran is chapter 14 verse 7 which states: "If you give thanks, I will give you more" (14:7). So Allah, glory be to Him the most high is saying that if we are thankful, we will receive more. That is exactly what the law of attraction teaches- - that when you feel gratitude, you will attract more things to feel gratitude for. Another verse of the holy Quran states in chapter 2 verse 152: "Remember Me. I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and never show me ingratitude." (Holy Quran, 2:152) OK so again, remember Me, Allah is saying if you remember Me, remember Allah, Allah will remember you; The law of attraction. When you think of Allah, Allah is going to think of you and remember you. The Secret, the law of attraction which is the secret, is reflected in these verses and there is also a Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him says that Allah the Most High says, I am with my slave whenever he thinks of Me and I am with him when he mentions Me. For if he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in a gathering, I mention him in a superior gathering. If he approaches Me by a hand's width, I approach him by an arm's length; and if he approaches Me by an arm's length, I approach him by two arms' lengths. And if he comes to Me walking, I hasten to him swiftly." (Bukhari and Muslim). So the secret, the law of attraction states that like attracts like. What you are thinking and feeling and doing attracts more of the same. So the secret law of attraction like attracts like, and this is exactly what this Hadith is saying, actually this hadith is saying that Allah will even do more for us than what we do for Him. So if we remember Allah then Allah remembers us in a superior gathering. So this proves just how loving and kind and generous Allah is. So basically if we learn to control our thoughts we will have more control over our life because our thoughts directly affect what we attract in our life . Now as Muslims of course we believe that all power is with Allah and nothing takes place without Allah's permission but at the same time Allah gave us human beings free will . So we have a free will to think good thoughts. Thinking good thoughts literally brings good things into your life. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "To harbor good thoughts is part of well-practiced worship" (Mishkat al Masabih, Volume 2, book 24, Chapter 17, p. 1048). So having good thoughts is a form of worship of God. The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also said, "A believer loves for others what he loves for himself" (Bukhari, Muslim). And that's just teaching us to feel love for everyone, not just for ourselves but when we love others that's a very good thing. Love is the highest frequency. Love is the highest vibration. The more love you feel, the better things you will attract in your life. So the Secret Movie and book, if you watched the movie it does seem a little materialistic/worldly. But the point of the law of attraction is really about being aware of our vibration, of our thoughts and feelings so we can attract anything that we want. And Islam is really teaching us to think about and remember Allah as much as possible. If you learn more about Islam it's all about remembering Allah and thanking Allah and putting Allah first. And according to the law of attraction what you think about and feel about you attract and insha'Allah when we as Muslims think about Allah, we will attract closeness to Allah, which is really the best gift- to be close to Allah, near to Allah, pleasing to Allah. And I personally have seen the law of attraction operate in my life. And part of Islam is using our reason and intelligence to interpret the signs around us. In the Holy Quran, Chapter 2 verse 164 the Quran states: In the creation of heaven and earth, in the succession of day and night, in the phenomena of ships sailing across the seas... in the fall of rain water from sky to quicken a dead earth, in populating the earth with all species of animals, in ordering of winds and clouds between sky and earth;in all these there are signs and pieces of evidence for people who use their reason. (2:164) So reason is praised in the Holy Quran and in Islam, and that's why I will use my reason to say that yes, I have seen the law of attraction in my life in many ways. I have two small/cute examples that I will share but it's just something interesting. For example, one day I was drinking some hot chocolate and I felt that this hot chocolate would really taste better if it was peppermint flavored. And it was just a thought-I didn't really care that much. Then a few days later I was on a road trip, and I stopped at a restaurant. And they were selling some things in front of the restaurant and there lo and behold was a "Peppermint Hot Cocoa". And of course I bought it and enjoyed. But I thought that was interesting that it just popped up a few days after I had that thoughts. Another little example: I was looking in a parenting magazine that showed a picture of a memory game (matching pictures) and at that time I had young children. So I had this thought, "That would be a great game for my son." A few days later I was counseling a child for my job and we attended a school program where I won pretty much the same memory game;the same game in the magazine. I honestly was not so interested in getting the game, but it just came to me, probably because I was not feeling anxious about getting it! So there are many other examples I could give, but just 2 interesting ones there. As Muslims we believe in One Creator. Well, because there is one Creator of an organized universe, it follows that there are laws that govern our universe. We know there is a law of gravity. Well, perhaps then there are more laws we are not even aware of, such as the law of attraction. The Holy Quran states, "And if all the trees in the earth were pens, and the sea, with seven more seas to help it, (were ink), the words of Allah could not be exhausted (31:27)-- Meaning that there's so much knowledge, so much that we don't know. I don't see how the law of attraction could not be included in the knowledge that a lot people don't know about. So again, the law of attraction in Islam is found in the Islamic teaching of dua, or prayer, calling on Allah. And Islam really encourages us to call on Allah for things that we want. And Islam encourages us to believe that we will receive what we ask for or at least to have a positive feeling about it, a hope that something will come. And so Islam does teach us to emit a positive frequency and ask for what we want. The Holy Quran states, "And your Lord said, Ask of Me, I will respond". (40:60) I will respond to you. Duaa/asking of Allah is a form of worship in Islam. Again, gratitude is really a big part of Islam and that's a huge part of the law of attraction. I've already stated the Quran says Allah says, "if you give thanks I will give you more" (14:7). Prophet Soloman (pbuh) is known to be a very thankful prophet in Islam. Prophet Soloman actually prayed to Allah to help him to be grateful: "... Solomon smiled and said, My Lord! Grant me that I should be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed on me and on my parents...(27:19)." There are multiple verses where Prophet Soloman talks about gratitude. ... As soon as Solomon saw the throne set before him, he said: "This is of the grace of my Lord that He may test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful; and whoever is grateful, he is grateful only for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful, then surely my Lord is All-Sufficient, Bountiful." (27:40). It's interesting to note that Prophet Solomon (pbuh) was known to be very rich. He was a king who Allah (swt) granted not only abundant wealth but special powers, such as the ability to talk to animals. A last point is that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) encouraged us to pray for other people. He (pbuh) said: "There is no Muslim servant (of God) who prays for his brother behind his back, in secret, but the angels say, "Amen! And you shall also have the same." (Abu Daud) So again, this is the law of attraction. What you put out, your vibration, your frequency, your praying for another person, you're going to get that back to you, because you're putting out a positive frequency that will come back to you. So for all these reasons I do believe that Islam supports the law of attraction, which is simply that you will attract in your life what is matching your feeling vibration. Guest: Grant Miller. Today we speak with Abdur Rahim (Grant Miller). He's a new revert (11 months) and reverted after a two year study and comes from a Catholic background, being a Eucharistic minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. About Grant: Converted in 2021 (July 10th) 59 years old Born in USA, Pittsburgh, Caucasian, grew up in Los Angeles. I was in foster care since I was 9 years old. Currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina Some topics discussed: Paedophilia in the church and how it push him away from Catholicism Growing up in a foster family The son-ship of Jesus The feeling of betraying Jesus when he started thinking about Islam Suspension of disbelief as apposed to critical thinking and making mental decisions and being open to all faiths The feeling of having a 'returning of faith' after leaving the church Researching about Islam and 'Jesus in Islam' The pamphlet he read, "My Great Love of Jesus Led Me to Islam" How his wife accepted his looking into Islam The day of conversion Grant states: My journey to the faith started in London. It was a Friday evening sometime in March, 2019, and I was returning to my hotel from work, it was around 8pm, and I passed by a table somewhere near Piccadilly Circus, where there were a few brothers and sisters with Qurans and other materials. At that time I was experiencing a crises in faith. Having been a lifelong Catholic, I was shaken to the core by the priest scandals and to be honest I was ready to just give up on religion. My depression led me to drink heavily, give up on God and religion, and do things that are considered immoral. I stopped by the table because I had always been curious about Islam and wanted to pick up some materials. A brother started talking to me. He asked if I was a Christian and I said yes, but at the moment not practicing. Then he asked if I believed in God, and I said yes. Then he asked if I believed in the Trinity, and I believe my answer surprised him, because I said 'No'; Honestly, he was a stranger, it was how I felt, and I just replied plainly. He then asked if I believe that Jesus was God, and I replied no again. I felt strange about this, being a Catholic they believe in the Trinity and Jesus being part of it. However, I always felt that Jesus was 'infused' with God, that He worked through Jesus. But with the crises I was going through, and the priests doing what they did, and they were supposedly devoted to the church and Jesus and look what happened. So in my heart I just could no longer accept any of it. The brother gave me a Quran, a booklet "My Great Love of Jesus Led Me to Islam", and other materials (which I still have to this day!), pointed out that I should start at Fatihah and then said something to me which sticks to me: "Promise me that when you get back to the hotel that you will pray openly and sincerely to God" He did not know what I was going through, nor did we even talk about anything personal. So he was not aware of my depression or anything. I was quite taken aback. I followed his advice. And when I got back and started praying, I literally began to sob and cry and poured out my whole heart, and asked God to help me, that I was so lost.I guess I can fill you in on the rest during our talk. More about Grant: Job/Expertise: I am consultant with the Oracle NetSuite Financial platform/ERP specialising in administration and programming. I have been in information technology all my working life, starting with the old IBM AS400 systems. I was an adjunct professor for MIS at Penn State University for a number of years, and have been a contributing author (Sybex, Coriolis publishers) and technical editor on a number of books dealing with Windows Server technology. Hobbies/Interests: I have written a number of books on martial arts history that can be found on Amazon, both published and also self-published (search for author Grant A. Miller). I play a number of instruments and was in the 'pit' for musicals (high school musicals). Passionate about: I do charity work for helping the poor (housing, education). I was formerly in the K of C that sponsored a number of projects. Work directly related to Islam/Muslims: I support my local mosque and Imam with communications/supplies for brothers that are incarcerated. I am also in charge of our "library". Personally I am finding that I may also dive into developing a support network for new Muslims coming from a Christian background with questions that revolve around this area. I find that having spent a lifetime in a particular Christian theology and then having the cart completely flipped over is not only a challenge but also untangling all the indoctrination and lingering feelings is something that is best tackled as a group. Purpose Islam gives us a very clear purpose in life: to worship and please and serve God. The Holy Quran states: And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Holy Quran, 51:56) So really the purpose for being in this world is to worship God and this brings contentment because we have a direction in life, a goal in life: to please our Creator. 2. Allah is forgiving and merciful Allah begins every surah/ chapter in the Holy Quran with "Bismillahirrahmaanirraheem," in the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Knowing that Allah chooses these names, these attributes for us to remember Him by is so heartwarming. Allah is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful and this brings contentment because we don't have to be perfect. If we sin, all we have to do is ask Allah for forgiveness, and Allah will forgive us. So it brings great contentment to know that Allah's mercy is greater than His anger. Allah is so forgiving, so merciful, and there's a hadith in which Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says that God says: (God says) O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I will forgive you for what you have done, and I will not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it. (Tirmidthi, Ahmad) 3. Islam is simple Islam is very simple. The main teachings of Islam obviously are to believe in Allah and do good deeds. And there's a hadith: A Bedouin came to the Prophet and said, "Tell me of a deed such that if I were to do it, I would enter Paradise." The Prophet said, "Worship God without worshiping anything along with Him, offer the (five daily) prescribed prayers, pay the compulsory alms (zakat), and fast the month of Ramadan." The Bedouin said, "(I swear) by Him in whose hands my life is, I will not do more than this." When he (the Bedouin) left, the Prophet said, "Whoever would like to see a man of Paradise should look at this man." (Bukhari) Knowing that we don't need to make religion complicated brings contentment. If we focus on the 5 pillars of Islam, we are doing the minimum we need to do. Hopefully we will do more, but it's nice to know that Islam is mainly about doing these 5 pillars. 4. It's all about your heart's sincerity Islam is all about being sincere, genuine to Allah, and this brings a lot of contentment. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) would pray to God; he would say: O God, Make my inside better than my outside, and also make my outside righteous. (Tirmidthi)So having inner sincerity to God is more important than anything, and another hadith says:Allah does not look at your bodies nor does he look at your faces, but He looks at your hearts.(Bukhari, Muslim) Your looks don't matter and your wealth doesn't matter: it's your heart.Knowing that Islam places so much emphasis on the heart and sincerity brings contentment because it makes us prioritize being honest with ourselves. And so when we're honest with ourselves, that brings contentment. 5. We are in the Community of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) Being in the Ummah or community of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) brings so much contentment. It is a great honor. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was the last prophet sent to humanity by God. So it's really a great honor to be in his community. There's a hadith that says: "Allah (swt) has given one Dua to every single prophet that He has guaranteed He will respond to.(Dua means a prayer/asking Allah for something. So Allah has given one chance to every prophet to make a prayer that is guaranteed to be answered.) And every single prophet has used up this Prayer for himself in this world, except for me. I have saved it and I have not used it and I will not use it in this life. I have kept it for my Ummah (my community) and I will use it for them on the day of judgment. And this Dua will be, O Allah, forgive my entire Ummah."(Sahih Muslim) And so the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) cares about us and loves us so much that he saved a prayer that God has guaranteed to answer on the Day of Judgment, and that prayer is for our forgiveness. So it's such a blessing to know that. 6. Islam encourages us to be thankful Being thankful is such a big part of Islam. In the Holy Quran Allah says, If you give thanks, I will give you more." (Holy Quran 14:7) Also the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said in a hadith, "Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for it is the best way not to belittle the favors of Allah." (Bukhari and Muslim) Thankfulness is so important to be content with life and it helps us to focus on our blessings. 7. Islam encourages us to be patient Patience is also a huge value in Islam. The Holy Quran says that Allah will reward those who are patient. It's just a part of life that we are going to have hardships, so Allah repeatedly says to have patience and that Allah's promise is true. (Quran 16:96, 2:155-157). And so being patient is such a big part of being content because it helps us to accept the hardships that come with life instead of getting angry or upset about them. So patience builds acceptance which is a part of contentment. 8. Believing in the Next World Believing in the next world brings so much contentment because this life is bound to disappoint us. So it's wonderful to know there's a next world and that death is not the end. When we die we will have another life, an eternal life. So it's wonderful to know that and we don't have to put all of our hopes into this world because it's temporary and there's a next world that's forever. 9. It's all good for the believer We believe as Muslims that it's all good. It's all good for the believer. Whatever happens to a believer is good in some way. Whether it's a good thing they like and they become thankful or whether it's a hardship, we become patient, and patience is good for us too. So we believe that everything that happens to us is good, and that brings so much contentment. ("How excellent the affairs of the believer: his affair, all of it, is good for him; and this is not the case with anyone except the believer; if prosperity comes to him, he is thankful (to God), and if adversity falls on him, he perseveres patiently: so it is all good (for him)" (Hadith in Muslim).) 10. Destiny As Muslims we believe in destiny and this brings so much contentment. We believe that everything that happens to us was destined to happen and we don't need to worry so much because whatever happens, it was God's will, and there is good in that. God is Good and so anything that happens to us is good in some way. Destiny is definitely a big part of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said in a hadith: Be aware that if the whole of mankind were to gather together to do something to help you, they would only be able to do something for you which God had already written for you. Likewise, if the whole of mankind gathered together to harm you, they would only be able to do something to harm you which God had already written to happen to you. (Tirmidthi) Destiny is a blessing. We do not need to despair of our losses nor become proud of our blessings, because everything is the will of our Lord. We do believe that of course we have a choice and we have some power over what happens through the choices that we make and the actions that we do, but at the same time Allah already knows and has destined what happens to us. 11. Prayer Prayer is such a big part of Islam. We pray five times a day and we are encouraged in the Quran to seek God's help through prayer and patience (2:153). And prayer brings so much contentment because it builds your connection with God. It brings you peace. And it's kind of a routine thing you have to do everyday, and that routine also brings peace and contentment. And prayer is a protection. So when we pray we believe that we are protected by God and that prayer is such a big source of protection. 12. Islam is the truth Islam is the true religion. Knowing that we are following the true religion of God brings contentment, right? The Quran says in multiple places: Truly, the religion of God is Islam (3:19) So Islam is the chosen religion of God, of the one true God. And in the Holy Quran it says: And whoever desires other than Islam as a religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers. (3:85) So really Islam is the religion of God and it brings so much contentment to know that we're in the true religion and we are so blessed. Topics discussed include: Kadija's literature review titled "American Muslim Women: Their Relationship with American Mosques" The biggest problems that new Muslims face Why women are excluded from some mosques in the USA The difference between Christians and Muslims with regards to how women interact with their places of worship Eastern cultural Islam vs true Islam How converts are less affected by Eastern cultural Islam Segregation of the sexes in mosques Also: Social services and social support for Muslim women The difference between mono-cultured mosques and mixed mosques that cater for a mix of cultures Cultural conditioning The reasons why women are culturally excluded from mosques The Westerner's expectations of community verses an immigrant's expectations Finding communities besides Islamic communities See Kadija's convert story here: https://untoislam.com/podcast/i-grew-up-in-a-military-household About Kadijah: My name is Kadijah, but I was born Michelle Kastriba. I converted the day before Ramadan in 2004 when I was 24 years old, and I will be 41 in a couple months. I grew up as an Army Brat. I was born on a Military Installation in West Germany (it was still the Cold War), and moved frequently between the U.S. and Europe as a child until my father retired from the Army and we settled in Pennsylvania in 1995. For several years, I was a pharmacy technician until I decided to go to college to pursue a degree in Economics, and I am currently a Junior at Penn State. I am also a proud and happy homemaker. I am an avid reader, and I love crochet. I am extremely passionate about volunteering and also empowering women. Most of my volunteering has been fundraising activities for Muslim organization including several years that organized and led many campaigns for my local Islamic School. Through the years, I have been asked by different groups in the Harrisburg, PA area to speak about my experiences as a Muslim including a panel at the Harrisburg Masjid and also at Harrisburg Area Community College. Lately, though, I have stepped back from volunteering and fundraising to focus on gaining knowledge. My focus now is to become an Islamic Educator for Women. I believe we desperately need them. I think what is most important about my experience is that I was born and raised Catholic. Even though I went to Church and Catholic school, I always felt something wasn't right, and I would pray for God to guide me. I grew in a military household at the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the War on Terror. Before I became a Muslim, my family and I had a very negative opinion of Islam and it's followers because that was the culture that we were exposed to. Then I started working as a clerk with two wonderful Muslims, and I started learning that Islam is not what happened on September 11, but so much more...it was the answer to my prayers. Alhumdilillah. About the Becoming Muslim Podcast Do you have questions about Islam? Are you looking for a new direction in life? Guest: Maryline David. Seeking Connection With God In this episode, we discuss Maryline's conversion to Islam. Maryline was raised Catholic, but after moving to Ireland learned more about other religions including Islam. She discusses how her desire to have a closer relationship to God led her to Islam. Sister Maryline converted 15 years ago and currently lives with her family in Spain. Some key points discussed: Her religious upbringing. Political Islam Cultural Islam Misconceptions about Islam. Her time in Yemen Taking her Shahada. Building a closer relationship with God. This is the book that Maryline mentioned: https://untoislam.com/book/struggling-to-surrender-jeffrey-lang The course taught by Maryline (99 names of Allah) can be found at Back to the Fitra Academy: http://kathrynljones.com/ Maryline says: I converted in 2006, so I have been Muslim for 15 years this year. I am less than a year away from reaching the Islamic age of maturity, 40. I am French. I grew up in a Catholic family. Some members of my family were/are very committed to their faith, including nuns, priests, chaplains or workers for Christian organisations (particularly L'Arche founded by Jean Vanier) and some are non-believers. I attended a Catholic school from 2 to 18 years old I think this is important to mention as it has shaped my path as a Muslim in some ways (as a reaction to what I grew up with initially) and it has also offered me paths of reflection and inspiration more recently. I grew up in a small town in Brittany (4000 inhabitants). My grandfather, my father and I were all born in that town, and my ancestors were born in France as far as I am aware. I currently live in Spain, South of Valencia, after having lived in Sheffield, Belfast, London, Paris and Dublin. I trained as a translator and more recently, as a secondary school teacher. I am an expert in languages and I am fascinated by the language reflects reality. I have two young children (10 and 5) and so, I don't have a lot of time for hobbies, but I love swimming, and I started open-water swimming during lockdown, with one of my achievements being to swim about a mile in 12 degrees celsius water. I generally love nature walks, and I would love to have more time for reading and writing. I am also interested in permaculture and how to build resilient communities, in alternative medicine of all sorts, especially unani tibb. I am not an expert in any of these fields, but I did start training in some of these (hijama and unani tibb particularly) I am passionate about inclusion, in helping those who feel marginalised in any way, shape or form, to find their place . I am also passionate about supporting mothers, and women in general, spiritually, emotionally, but also in very practical ways at a local level. Covid restrictions had destroyed all the informal social tissue in my neighbourhood: the playgroups, the mum and baby coffee mornings, the breastfeeding advice cafes, etc. Without these, I have no idea how I would have functioned when I first became a mother, and my heart was completely broken for the isolated mums. We need a village to raise a child, and it is the building of this village that I am passionate about (metaphorically and in very concrete ways as well). I believe this starts by ourselves if we can, in whatever capacity. I am also a Back to the Fitrah mentor, and this means I help Muslims come back to their God-given wisdom, to their fitrah, to identify when they are following their inner compass or not (what we describe as being inside out or outside in). At Back to the Fitrah, I hold a gathering online each week called the 99 Names of Allah from the Inside Out, where we go through each of Allah's names and chat about how this name has manifested itself in our lives or how we can live by this name. In the future, I also intend to offer what I learned at Back to the Fitrah in French. I am also a volunteer with Rabata, and although I don't have a major role in the organisation, I feel passionate about how it supports women in their pursuit of sacred knowledge. Both these organisations are headed by converts , and this was one of the reasons I initially approached them, and I found there the support and the understanding I needed. Guest: Kadijah Michelle. Today's guest is Kadijah. In this episode we discuss: Information on how she had been involved in her Catholic faith. Her upbringing in the Catholic church. Difficulties with some of the practices in the Catholic church. How she learned about the doctrine changes in the Catholic church over time. When she realized her disbelief in her Catholic faith, she discusses how this impacted her and her values. How she first learned about Islam through her religion class in high school. Her first encounter with Muslims. Her first visit to her local Masjid. How she was able to further learn about Islam through reading and asking questions of other Muslims. Her shahadah and her first Ramadan. The process of learning about Islam and how knowledge in Islam is an ongoing process. How difficult it was to learn to pray and how few other Muslims she initially encountered. Receiving advice from those who may not have knowledge versus those who do. Work/life balance. Building an Islamic library to increase knowledge. Wearing and not wearing the hijab, and the reasons to wear hijab. Judging others and the 'Haram Police'. This is what Kadijah says: My name is Kadijah, but I was born Michelle Kastriba.
