From Strictly to village fête vegetables, competitions are embedded in our culture. And music is no exception: think of the Pythian Games of ancient Greece, the mediaeval singing competitions which selected the Master Singers, the improvisatory keyboard face-offs of 18th-century Vienna, and the international media-driven events of our own times. But are musical instinct and the competitive spirit uneasy bedfellows? Why do some musical tournaments consistently produce winners who go on to have spectacular careers, and others winners who sink without trace? What's the value of music written for competitions? On hand to help Tom Service answer these questions and throw light on the sometimes murky world of music competitions are Lisa McCormick author of Performing Civility, a study of the social aspects of music competitions, and saxophonist and 2016 BBC Young Musician finalist, Jess Gillam. Did you know it is estimated that 30-40% of all trafficking victims are male? Guest Lisa McCormick joins us in the studio to share about her son Jeffrey, a 17-year-old boy from rural Wisconsin recruited into a sex trafficking ring out of Madison and exploited until his death in September 2016. She unpacks not only her unique perspective as a parent but shares her own journey coping with a “parent's worst nightmare.” McCormick also gives resources for parents and mentors such as Convergence Resources “Through the Eyes of a Parent” which gives legal, health, emotional support for families, and SLOTH – “Supporting Loved Ones Through Hardship” to help equip parents as they support their child or loved who is going through immense adversity. Through her work, Lisa walks alongside parents, grandparents, caregivers and all others, giving hope that they are not alone in this journey. Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick. I’m the Creator and Host of Get Up Nation® and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Lisa McCormick. Lisa lost her son Jeffrey when he was 17 years old to a drug overdose. Lisa later learned Jeffrey had been sex trafficked prior to his death. Lisa speaks and advocates for systemic change that enables American systems to hold traffickers and buyers accountable, prevent human trafficking, and effectively rescue and serve those who have been trafficked. Because of the sensitive nature of the interview, I chose not to end the show with my usual six questions. Instead we focus heavily on the resilience process Lisa uses of transforming her pain and grief into advocacy, awareness, and a relentless drive to educate others in hopes of preventing future exploitation. Lisa is a member of the Wisconsin Anti Human Trafficking Advisory Council and is featured in the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families documentary film on youth sex trafficking in Wisconsin to be released in 2019. Lisa speaks on the topics of sex trafficking, drug addiction, bullying, acceptance, and her faith throughout her personal journey as a parent of a sex trafficking victim. She educates groups to recognize the signs of at risk youth, how to overcome barriers of fear in talking with them and showing them you care, and to give them someone to trust. Lisa has made it her life’s purpose to share her family’s story so others understand trafficking and how easily our vulnerable children can be exploited. Lisa walks alongside suffering parents, grandparents, and caregivers, supporting them with the knowledge that they are not alone in this journey. In this episode of the Get Up Nation® Show, we are confronted with the truth that human trafficking exists only because there is a demand for it. If there was no demand, it would not exist. And now, I present to you, Lisa McCormick. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/get-up-nation-podcast/support

Have you ever felt frustrated because you keep getting something wrong in the music you’re learning? Or worried that there is just too much to learn and you’re coming to music too late to ever master it all? Today we have the pleasure of interviewing Lisa McCormick, a successful singer-songwriter and the creator of the “Note2Self” methodology of music learning, which can help with exactly those kinds of mindset barriers, especially among adult musicians. After several years as a successful artist, Lisa turned her attention to teaching and now specialises in helping adult beginners get going with guitar and ukulele. We first met Lisa several years ago after discovering an excellent course she created to help guitarists start playing chords by ear. As well as in person classes 1-on-1 and in groups around Brattleboro, Vermont, she provides courses through her website LisaMcCormick.com and is a senior faculty member at GuitarTricks.com. What we love about Lisa’s approach is that she really focuses on the joy of making music from day one and strips away the complexity that can often make learning music frustrating for adults. In this conversation we talk about: • The emotional baggage that can make it difficult for adults to begin learning a new instrument and how to get around that • How she helps complete beginners play a song on ukulele in less than ten minutes - and play several songs by the end of the day • How the Note2Self methodology can equip musicians - particularly those who are self-taught or trying to make use of internet resources to learn - to get away from the negative self-talk and confusion that can hold them back, and instead learn faster by having effective and healthy mental habits Lisa also shares the simple 3-word mantra from Note2Self that you can start using immediately - and honestly this alone could be transformative for how much you enjoy your musical journey... McCormick uses a detailed engagement with contemporary cultural sociology to grapple with one of the core questions facing the study of culture, of how performances can be measured, codified and judgements ultimately made. The book also engages with gender, comportment and the body, to think through the interaction of performer, judges and audiences, giving an insight into not only the classical competition, but the nature and function of culture in contemporary society. The book will be important reading beyond sociology, for music scholars and anyone interested in arts and culture.
