LLN (4/12/23) – Even the CEO of the California Trucking Association can't quite make sense of the state's new emissions standards. LLN (4/11/23) – The rules that govern speed limits have become a topic of conversation – and legislation – at state capitals around the country. That includes action that would eliminate the differential in speeds between cars and trucks in some cases, and an increase in speeds for all vehicles in others. Also, the FMCSA recently offered an update on an area many in trucking still find confusing – the drug and alcohol clearinghouse. LLN (4/10/23) – A member of the U.S. House has introduced a resolution that would overturn the EPA's latest set of emissions standards for large trucks. Also, education is an important part of OOIDA. Over the past 50 years, the Association has offered a number of classes, webinars and programs to ensure truck drivers and those getting into the industry are equipped with the tools they need to succeed. And when it comes to insurance, having a hired driver on your policy can come with increased risk. LLN (3/21/23) – If you get your own authority, there are a few things you're going to go through that you need to be aware of. One of them is the new entrant safety audit. We'll discuss what you need to have ready and what's involved. Also, the introduction of electric trucks into the industry will spell a lot of changes throughout trucking. One example: the tire selection process will look different. And a bill in Maine would make it to where snow and ice would have to be removed from atop certain vehicles on the state's highways. LLN (3/20/23) – A coalition of safety advocacy groups has written the secretary of transportation calling for several regulatory changes – including mandating speed limiters. Also, it was referred to as the nightmare before Christmas in 2009, when Arrow Trucking shut off fuel cards and closed up shop leaving thousands of drivers stranded across the country. Land Line Magazine's Jami Jones details the days that followed the closure and how OOIDA stepped in to coordinate efforts to help the truck drivers in need. LLN (3/8/23) – Truck drivers have been fighting for bathroom access at shippers and receivers. We recently spoke with two OOIDA members about the importance of the issue and looked at what's being done to make it mandatory for shippers and receivers to provide bathroom access to drivers. Also, spring shipping season is starting to kick into gear according to DAT. And more and more truckers are talking about high costs and low rates. They want to know how much money brokers are taking and what shippers are actually paying. Some changed how they do businesses during the good times, and are scrambling as things have gotten tough. LLN (2/14/23) – A Georgia House committee is scheduled to discuss a bill to allow 90,000-pound trucks on roadways. Meanwhile, a bill moving through the Washington state Senate would give truck drivers operating throughout the state access to restroom facilities at shippers and receivers. Also, a series of electronic logging devices have been revoked from the FMCSA's approved list. So what does that mean to the truckers who use them? And it's not uncommon for a truck driver to put their own well-being in second place to get the job done.
