While I write, the United States President has risen up from 20,000 leagues under the sea and murky waters of the Eastern Seaboard. Not content to wave his tentacles across the American media, crushing those who displease him he has, in a circular sweep with his pal Benjamin, now focused on the BBC. Searching for a hook which which to snare this big fish they have found a questionable editorial choice from an October 28th Panorama Program last year about the US President. The hook is tightly embedded, heads have rolled, and the mighty organization is left rudderless with no captain or first-mate to hold the ship steady. Another decision is to be made, apologize or stand firm, or even let the Government make this decision for them. Pontus Pilate did not have it any easier.
The version of the American Revolution many of us were taught was focussed on the ideals and principles of the revolution: Independence, democracy, liberty guaranteed by enumerated rights. And if we were taught about the actual conflict, we maybe heard of a few battles in New England and the mid-Atlantic– maybe there was a setback here and there. But the whole thing was presented as basically inevitable: Because of those ideals and principles, and maybe a dose of Providence (as some then thought as well.) By focusing on the actual conflicts of the era, and the consequences thereof for the greatly divided populace of the Eastern Seaboard of North America in their new 6-part series for PBS, The American Revolution, Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein (Jazz, The Vietnam War, The US and the Holocaust) complicate all of this. While paying proper attention to the motivating ideals, they delineate the role the desire for the lands of Native Americans played in the war, and they show how the conflicts moved–often via waterways, and usually internecine–from New England, to the Mid-Atlantic, to the South. And throughout, victory was not just not preordained, but in fact very contingent on the actions both of some outstanding individuals such as Washington (and yes, Arnold), as well as the strategies and agendas of nations as diverse as the Cayuga and Oneida (and yes, The French). You can watch The American Revolution on PBS starting November 16th. In somewhat of an unconventional "studio" setting - namely a gutted former restaurant under renovation and equipped with only a table, a few folding chairs, a cooler of beer and an extension cord - 6 fellow music lovers travelled from across the Eastern Seaboard to Downtown Huntington to discuss and debate a subject that has been the hot topic among the group for over 6 years. "What are the Top-5 greatest American rock-&-roll bands of all time." Key word - American. No Stones. No Beatles. No U2. No Led Zeppelin (#sorrymeyers). The criteria as to what makes a band authentically American was that every band member, without exception, must have been born in the United States. No Metallica (#sorryhanna). After the rules of engagement were spelled out, the conversation that ensued over the next 50+ minutes was as spirited and riveting as any I've hosted in any prior episode. Enjoy the energy that flowed amongst my co-host, Rob "Monkey Man" Diestel, and his "Boys from Bergen" - Nick Halaby, Lewis Meyers, and Matt Hanna. Special cameo appearance at the end by our sound engineer, none other than founding member and frontman of Huntington's own Bogmen, Billy Campion. fWotD Episode 3046: Hurricane Ophelia (2005) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 6 September 2025, is Hurricane Ophelia (2005).Hurricane Ophelia was a long-lived tropical cyclone in September 2005 that moved along an erratic path off the East Coast of the United States for much of its existence. The fifteenth named storm and the eighth hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, Ophelia originated from a complex set of systems across the Atlantic in early September. An area of low pressure consolidated near the Bahamas and was classified as Tropical Depression Sixteen on September 6. Stuck in a region of meager steering currents, largely dominated by a lull between two ridges to the north and east, this system moved along a looping course with a general northward trajectory. The following day it organized into Tropical Storm Ophelia and soon reached hurricane status on September 8. Over the next week, Ophelia's intensity oscillated between tropical storm and hurricane levels due to intrusions of dry air, varying levels of wind shear, and gradual upwelling of cooler waters along its meandering path. Gradually growing in size, the system reached hurricane strength for the fourth time and its peak strength on September 14, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 km/h). By this time Ophelia had completed a second loop and was moving northwest toward North Carolina. Changing direction once again, the system turned away from the state though its eyewall scraped the coastline for two days. The system degraded to tropical storm strength for a final time on September 16 as it began accelerating northeast. Becoming embedded within the westerlies, Ophelia transitioned into an extratropical cyclone the next day. Remaining on a steady east-northeast to northeast path for the next week, Ophelia traversed Atlantic Canada and the northern Atlantic Ocean before dissipating on September 23 over the Norwegian Sea.Ophelia's erratic track prompted warnings and watches for a large swath of the Eastern Seaboard, ultimately a greater area than necessary. With the storm occurring on the heels of Hurricane Katrina, state governments were quick to prepare shelters out of an abundance of caution. National Guard servicemen were deployed to North Carolina while thousands more were on standby there and in South Carolina. More than 2,000 people used public shelters as Ophelia approached land. As the hurricane's core remained largely offshore, its impacts were significantly less than feared. Some coastal locales saw heavy rain, notably more than 15 in (380 mm) in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The greatest impacts were felt in North Carolina, where more than 240,000 people lost power and more than 1,500 homes were damaged. Total monetary losses in the state were estimated at $70 million. Extensive beach erosion occurred due to the hurricane's prolonged effects. Tropical storm-force wind gusts and heavy rain caused minor damage in Florida, Massachusetts, and South Carolina. Rough seas led to one fatality in Florida and left another person missing in South Carolina while rain-slicked roads contributed to a fatal accident in North Carolina. Atlantic Canada saw negligible effects as Ophelia's remnants traversed the region; one person died after falling from his roof while preparing for the storm. In the storm's wake, 37 of North Carolina's counties were declared disaster areas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided roughly $5.2 million in public assistance and the National Guard assisted with distribution of relief supplies. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:54 UTC on Saturday, 6 September 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Hurricane Ophelia (2005) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Danielle.
There is an ongoing spat over the bidding procedure for a multimillion-dollar contract to renovate 18 service plazas along Massachusetts roadways. Waltham-based Global Partners LP, a fuel delivery company that currently runs the convenience stores at many of the plazas, lost the bid to Applegreen, a company founded in Ireland with an extensive presence along the Eastern Seaboard. Global Partners legally challenged MassDOT's procurement, evaluation, and operator selection process. President and CEO of Global Partners, Eric Slifka joined us to discuss the latest in this spat.*Applegreen will join us on NightSide, this Friday evening to share their side of the feud*
This college football player named Archie is feeling the love from across America today. He's from Australia but was recruited by the University of Nebraska to be their punter. But being so far away from his family isn't easy. During his very first press conference, Archie was asked about his loved ones back home and the waterworks started flowing. And the obituary for Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband is bringing to light things we never knew. He went on to have a relationship with Kelly's personal assistant. Also raising some eyebrows is the fact there's no mention of Kelly anywhere in the lengthy tribute. Plus, you may have seen that dramatic video of lifeguards going into action on the Jersey shore as a rip tide dragged swimmers out to sea, leading to the death of a 31-year-old dad. Now comes a major warning-- Hurricane Erin is coming and even though it's expected to strike offshore, it is expected to generate high surf and dangerous rip currents all along the Eastern Seaboard. And the countdown is on for Taylor Swift's first appearance on boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast tonight and Swifties are losing their minds waiting for the big moment. In “Virginia Public Schools Serve Indigenous Cuisine,” Gravy producer Anya Groner takes listeners to the second annual Indigenous Peoples Feast at the College of William & Mary. The evening's menu showcases indigenous food–foraged wild rice, duck confit, acorn grits, and a four-corn stew. But these dishes aren't just for enjoying tonight. With the help of a USDA grant, they'll eventually be served at public school cafeterias in Virginia's coastal Tidewater Region. Coming up with the menu wasn't easy. Centuries of forced assimilation, land grabs, and genocide prevented cultural knowledge from being passed down through generations. Designed by Chef Diosa Hall from the Mohawk Nation and Chef Joe Rocchi from the Pamunkey Tribe, the meal combined native plants and fowl from the Eastern Seaboard with contemporary culinary trends, emphasizing the entire production process, from tiny seed to plated meal. Volunteers foraged herbs like plantain and bergamot. Hunters donated ducks. Growers harvested sustainably farmed vegetables. Scaling up the supply chain to make these ingredients available to hundreds of schools could take two or three decades. Dr. Troy Wiipongwii is the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Conservation at the College of William and Mary and a founding member of the Traditional Eastern Woodlands Foodways Alliance, the intertribal group leading this program. He says sustainable foods cost almost double to produce, but they're worth it. Agricultural systems like food forests not only rebuild ecosystems, but they also produce nutrient-dense food that's healthier to eat. Wiipongwii put together a K-12 curriculum integrating indigenous foodways into science, math, health, and humanities to change attitudes around food production. Chef Hall believes making native foods available in public schools will give indigenous students a sense of belonging. That's especially important because schools haven't always been welcoming places for Native children. For centuries, residential schools took children from Native families and forced them to learn European culture and adopt Christianity. Hall hopes the new menu she helped put together will reclaim some of the cultural practices targeted by the residential schools. Listen to find out what it will take to keep indigenous food traditions visible in the nation's cultural landscape—and how kids rate acorn grits and butternut squash against the typical school lunch. Adam's Paternity Leave continues, so we're going to dive into the brainmelty world where actors from the The Wire invade SVU and throw us all into a tizzy, as they occupy a shared universe. Patreon payments are frozen for the time being. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. It sexually objectifies real-life 14-year-olds, it is extremely racist, it makes offhand references to piss play, and it takes us on a mind-bending Pynchonian journey to an interzone where The Wire both exists and does not exist depending on the exact placement of John Munch on the Eastern Seaboard. On this episode of Bingeworthy, we're heading to the grimy, drug-running underworld of “Dope Thief,” a gritty Apple TV+ miniseries based on Dennis Tafoya's novel, which airs it's finale on Friday, April 25th. The show follows Ray and Manny, two longtime friends and low-level criminals from Philadelphia who impersonate DEA agents to knock over drug stash houses. But when one job unexpectedly exposes a hidden narcotics pipeline along the Eastern Seaboard, their small-time hustle spirals into a life-or-death game of survival and consequence.Brian Tyree Henry stars as Ray, a recovering addict struggling to escape his past while trying to stay one step ahead of increasingly dangerous enemies. Wagner Moura plays Manny, a charming but unpredictable wildcard whose deep bond with Ray is tested by every bad decision they make. The series, written and created by Peter Craig (“The Town,” “The Batman”), also stars Marin Ireland, Nesta Cooper, and Ving Rhames, with executive producer Ridley Scott directing the first episode.

Snow Geese nest from far northeastern Russia to Greenland, in the arctic and subarctic. They winter in large flocks on the deltas of rivers in northwestern Washington, areas along the Eastern Seaboard, and throughout the Mississippi Flyway. Watching Snow Geese in flight, author and naturalist Barry Lopez described them, "as if the earth had opened and poured them forth, like a wind, a blizzard, which unfurled across the horizon above the dark soil ... great swirling currents of birds in a rattling of wings..." This was a trip two years in the making and one that I'd wanted to check off the bucketlist for some time. Kent Cartridge actually set this trip up for 2023 but a bad weather system saw last year's trip postponed at the last minute. That only added to the anticipation of what the Eastern [...]
Welcome to China Compass on the Fight Laugh Feast Network! I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. You can follow me on X (@chinaadventures) where I post daily reminders to pray for China (PrayforChina.us). You can also email me with any questions or comments @ bfwesten at gmail dot com. You can also find easy links to everything we are involved in @ PrayGiveGo.us! Summary Today I begin by discussing Jimmy Lai (the Hong Kong Tucker Carlson) and his bold comments about Xi Jinping (2:11), followed by looking at the Chinese dictator's struggle with his military and his weaponization of China's endemic corruption (12:42). Next we look at China's flip flopping its private tutor laws (22:18), which I know quite well. Finally I talk all about Shandong (29:50) and share fascinating stories of the missionaries and martyrs who lived and died there, including the famous “Chariots of Fire” Olympian Eric Liddell (41:29). ...Widespread heavy rain threat developing from the central and easternGulf Coast to the entire East Coast tonight into Wednesday......Arctic air to plunge south and eastward across the northern Plains,Upper Midwest, and Great Lakes tonight into Wednesday......Another round of significant lake effect snow to begin Wednesday andcontinue through Thursday downwind of the Lakes...A developing storm system over the Southeast U.S. is set to bringwidespread heavy rains from the central and eastern Gulf Coast to theentire East Coast tonight into Wednesday. A wave of low pressure willrapidly strengthen and move northeastward across the interior Mid-Atlanticand Northeast, dragging a strong cold front along with it. Ahead of thefront, warm and moist air will set the stage for numerous showers andthunderstorms, some of which could become strong to severe. This isespecially the case across eastern North Carolina on Wednesday, where theStorm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) for severethunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts. Elsewhere alongthe Eastern Seaboard, the main concern will be a period of heavy rain withembedded strong thunderstorms and intense downpours. Despite much of theregion currently experiencing moderate to extreme drought conditions, therain, while mostly beneficial, could still lead to some localizedinstances of flash flooding. The more urbanized locations and poordrainage areas would have the greater risk of flooding issues. The cold front will sweep across the East Coast Wednesday into Thursday, with much colder air surging in from the north and northwest in its wake. This Arctic blast will first plunge into the northern Plains and UpperMidwest tonight before expanding eastward across the Great Lakes,Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Wednesday and Thursday. High temperatures thenext couple of days will be roughly 10 to as much as 30 degrees belownormal. The cold post-frontal air mass will also help to change rain tosnow across the western slopes of the Appalachians and interior portionsof New England and the Northeast with at least modest accumulationslooking like a decent bet.Attention then turns to yet another round of significant lake effect snowdownwind of the Great Lakes Wednesday through Thursday. The aforementionedArctic air will stream across the still relatively warm Great Lakes andignite intense bands of lake effect snow, initially downwind of LakesSuperior and Michigan on Wednesday and then downwind of Lakes Erie andOntario Wednesday night into early Thursday. By the time the snow startsto taper off on Friday, snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are likely in thefavored Snow Belt across portions of northwest and western New York State, far northwest Pennsylvania, far northeastern Ohio, the Upper Peninsula ofMichigan and the western portions of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

Along 1,600 miles of the Eastern Seaboard, from Maine to Florida, sea level rise, subsidence, and more potent storms are challenging the National Park Service to figure out how best to protect wildlife and their habitats, as well as historic structures, archaeological sites, modern infrastructure, landscapes, and, of course, visitors. In the coming months, the National Parks Traveler will be examining impacts tied to climate change and how the National Park Service is responding to them. We'll bring you the concerns of residents and communities that are left with the damage from hurricanes and the loss of tax revenues from tourism and trace the strain these events have on the Park Service staff and budget. We'll also talk to experts about how natural landscapes, such as barrier reefs and salt marshes, and wildlife are being impacted. We're going to have one of those conversations today with two experts from The Nature Conservancy: Dr. Alison Branco, TNC's Climate Adaptation Director, and Dr. Nicole Maher, the organization's Senior Coastal Scientist.
