Tionna Bonner was pushed up against a car when Columbus police officer Nicholas Reardon fired the shots that killed Ma'Khia Bryant. Raised by the same foster mother, she recounted to an investigator shortly after the shooting how her upbringing had differed from that of Ma'Khia's.
Shai-Onta Craig, also raised by foster mother Angela Moore before aging out of the system, told an investigator she didn't know why Ma'Khia had come at her with a knife. She recounted how after falling to the ground, she tried to put herself in a ball to protect her stomach because of her pregnancy.

Many foster carers and social workers have worked with youth whose stories mirror that of Ma'Khia Bryant. Her life was important. She was special. We hope we can honor her and those like her. We are lucky enough to be joined by Amnoni Meyers, Resource Family Training Specialist, who was gracious enough to share the parallels between Ma'Khia's story and her own. Who she was and what she experienced are important, and connects back to three key points for all youth in care: 1. Can they name at least one adult with whom they feel connection? 2. What happened to them that makes them feel, think, or act the way they do? 3. How can we meet families and youth where they are to help improve the system as a whole? Should we even be concerned about celebrity opinions? Dr. Terrance Dean leads a discussion with three Black scholars and intellectuals regarding the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant, a teenage girl shot and killed by a Columbus police officer. Dr. Karen Powell Sears, Dr. Drexler James and Marcelius Braxton share their opinions on what the case means for young Black women around the country. Braxton, an assistant dean at Capital University's law school and the author of an op-ed column on the subject for the Dispatch, says that the Bryant case exposes a dirty secret in American culture — Black girls are often treated as if they are adults, and innocence is not afforded to them as it is to their white female peers. Powell Sears, a sociology professor at Denison University, attributes the cause of society's treatment of Black girls to racist tropes that have been perpetuated since the slave trade. Drexler, a psychology professor at Denison, discusses how racist theories alleging Blacks are physically stronger, faster and larger than whites have also played a role in how society views Black girls. All the speakers refer to the term "adultification" — that Black girls who are still very much children are treated as grown-ups. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 40 On April 20th, the same day the verdict came in on the Chauvin trial, Ma'Khia Bryant was shot and killed by a police officer. National tensions reignited, and LeBron James fueled them with a tweet that many took to be a call to dox and harm the officer. But what are the facts of this case? Was the shooting justified? Are children capable of evil, and should they be held responsible for the evil they commit? Should the officer be charged? Join us in this episode to talk about these things and their implications for race and police relations in the country. Was the Derek Chauvin Trial verdict the correct one? If so, what do we do now and how. are cases like the Daniel Shaver shooting connected to this? Beyond that, in a time where things are already tense in America over the trial, we also have to navigate the Ma'khia Bryant shooting. Was that another unjustified police killing of a black person, or is it less black-and-white than other times? Only one way to figure out how to navigate all of this...let's talk about it. On April 20th, 2021, a sixteen year old girl was gunned down by officer Nicholas Reardon of the Columbus Police Department. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to social media to echo the sentiment clearly illustrated by Reardon's actions; that Ma'khia didn't matter. I promise that we will laugh, joke, and get in our feelings about all of the things that keep us up at night later. What happens to a dream deferred? When Langston Hughes penned "A Dream Deferred" he inspired the minds of millions of people who would take their cues from the poem for generations to come. Racism in the form of the justice system and police brutality continues to steal the dreams of young black and brown people, creating a vacuum in an attempt to stagnate and stifle this generation. Listen as we explore the topic.
