Digital Underground's debut album, Sex Packets, is a landmark in hip-hop, blending humor, funk, and creativity into a genre-defying masterpiece. Released in 1990, the album is heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, led by the charismatic Shock G (and his alter ego, Humpty Hump). The group's playful, irreverent style is on full display, along with innovative sampling and production that set it apart from the gangsta rap dominating the era.The album's concept revolves around fictional "sex packets"—a satirical sci-fi invention offering a hallucinogenic sexual experience. This loose narrative underpins the project, showcasing Digital Underground's knack for storytelling and world-building.Standout tracks include the massive hit “The Humpty Dance,” an infectious party anthem known for its funky bassline and hilarious lyrics, and “Doowutchyalike,” a carefree track encouraging listeners to embrace self-expression. Beyond the humor, tracks like “Packet Man” and “Freaks of the Industry” showcase clever wordplay, while the production layers samples from funk legends like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins to create a rich sonic tapestry.Sex Packets is both a celebration of funk's legacy and a bold leap forward for hip-hop, cementing Digital Underground as pioneers of their time.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Peace, and humptiness forever! A mantra we should all do well to abide by. How about a little lumpy oatmeal and sort-of concept album this week?Digital Underground is just one of those groups that are okay being a little weird, a lot goofy, and very (oh so very) phonky. Shock G and dudes like Schmoovy Schmoov, Chopmaster J, and Money B all brought Parliament into hip-hop.Sex Packets is hyper horny, major vibes, and only kind of actually about sex packets, which may or may not be real. Ask NASA, but maybe NASA lies?!Check out the episode to hear Cody and Hilary break down this classic! Thanks for listening! Money B is a rapper and member of Digital Underground and Raw Fusion. Moving from Philadelphia to Oakland, his childhood was shaped by his father's membership in the Black Panther Party. Once he met Digital Underground founder Shock G, Money B became an integral part of the group and their first hit "Doowhatchyalike." Famously, DU would introduce the world to 2pac as a member and Money B played a large role in his debut album. The DU family tree also includes Saafir (RIP), Mystic, 4rax of the Mekanix, and many others. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introdution 01:24 “Freaks of the Industry” 03:55 New single with Guapdad 4000 06:03 Growing up in Philly & Oakland 09:07 Money B's father in the Black Panthers 14:20 Getting into hip-hop 23:30 Shock G starting Digital Underground 28:18 Shock G came to Oakland while pimpin' 31:21 Money B & DJ Fuze join the group 33:29 “Doowutchyalike”, Tommy Boy records 41:41 Different styles of hip-hop 48:04 “The Humpty Dance” 50:39 Shock G & Mac Dre 55:30 “We're All In The Same Gang” 58:52 2pac joins Digital Underground 1:04:54 2pacalypse Now, “Brenda's Got A Baby” 1:09:50 2pac's roots in Oakland 1:15:19 “I Get Around” 1:17:36 2pac going to Death Row 1:28:49 Saafir 1:39:22 Digital Underground's last album 1:44:38 Young Hump 1:54:40 Shock G's passing --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Ear to the Street”(1993), “Gamers”(1996);诗人气质的 Mystic 在 Digital Underground 1998 年专辑“Who Got the Gravy?”中首次亮相,个人首张 “Cuts For Luck and Scars For Freedom” 发行于 2001 年,在其中真诚地剖析了很多深刻内容,让关于耻辱的话题在音乐中有表达的空间,制作人有 Zion I 的 Amp Live,Hieroglyphics 的 A-Plus, 以及 Shock G;街头狠大姐,有着 female player 气质的 Marvaless 和 Passion,推荐专辑: “Ghetto Blues”(1994) by Marvaless, “Baller's Lady”(1996) by Passion;1980s 末短暂出现的 Kimmie Fresh,敢于挑战当时代表男性皮条音乐的 Too Short,重写了女性视角的 “The Real Freaky Tales”,当然 Too Short 作为一名虚怀若谷有格局的老皮条客,与 Kimmie 也建立了友谊;90s-00s 时代的 Bay Area 地区还有很多女性 rapper 由于各种原因都没有留下作品,甚至在时代发展中销声匿迹毫无记录,只有在少数历史报道中我们会得知一些名字,但在本地社区中一直是受人尊敬的存在;Neo Soul 歌手 Goapele 的地下场景名作 “Even Closer”(2002)05. 影响极其深远的 Bay Area Underground Hip HopHieroglyphics 大家族出品质量稳定,尤其是 “3rd Eye Vision”(1998), “Full Circle”(2003) ,创始人 Del The Funky Homosapien 也是深受 P-Funk 影响的文化传承者,1991 年首张个人专辑 “I Wish My Brother George was Here”是明显的 P-Funk 致敬,其他作品另类气质独特也十分推荐:”Future Development”(1997), “Both Side of Brain”(1999);Del 与 Dan the Automator, DJ Kid Koala 的三人组合 Deltron 3030 同名专辑是一张制作与概念都水平很高的地下另类名作;Souls of Mischief 的 Hip Hop 历史教科书级别作品 “93 'til Infinity”,同名歌曲是 Bay Area 地下最具代表性的大名曲,它所传达的时代情绪和制作思路都令人叫绝;大家族中成员的个人作品都很推荐,Opio, A-Plus, Casual, Pep Love 没有难听的;来自 Sacramento 的 Blackalious 在我们之前的“Underground”话题单集中提到过,所属的团体 Quannum Projects 风格另类,元素丰富;06. Episode playlist:The Conscious Daughters - “Somethin To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)”Mystic - “Neptune's Jewels”Passion - “Where I'm From”Kimmie Fresh and The People - “The Real Freaky Tales The Girl Story”Marvaless - “Bring The Bomb”Del the Funky Homosapien - “Mistadobalina”Deltron 3030 - “Mastermind”Souls of Mischief - “93 'til Infinity”Hieroglyphics ft. Rappers love a nickname or alias—some more than others. A good alias can become just as renowned as the name on the album cover. Sumit and Chris talk about their favourite Rap aliases - from the appropriate to the silly - and they have some fun with it. By the way, that's Shock G on the cover because his Humpty Hump alias is mad. He rocked a plastic nose and became a whole new person. Please respect the ting. RIP. Digital Underground is a movement that continues to celebrate the joy of life decades after the group was founded. It is because of this continued movement that the golden ale Shock G Forever was created to celebrate the life of the legendary Shock G. In this episode, we had the pleasure of not only speaking to Hella Costal Brewing Company and Oak Park Brewing Company about the golden ale, but Peps and Young Hump on aspects about Shock G that only those involved in the movement would know. The Movement Never Dies. Cheers

After a week of high activity, I took time to let you all catch up and get a much-needed break. I definitely missed the process and it shows. Episode 237 was dedicated to three gentlemen who personify Hip Hop in their own ways. From DJ Kay Slay a Man who played a part in every element of Hip Hop, to Shock G one of the culture's most talented and original characters, and of course the man behind the title Rico Wade. I open with a musical tribute to just a handful of his contributions transcending the genre while highlighting Rico's Wave. Not many people are “One Degree of Separation” from Kevin Bacon, but this week's guest, Jason Sumney is. Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of a rabid record collector, Jason started his retail music career while in HIgh School at National Record Mart, a locally based, national chain that at its peak had 175 stores in 30 states. Knowing all of the latest releases and the camaraderie he felt with his fellow employees made working in a record store the perfect job for Jason. It was after meeting someone who loved Prince's “Lovesexy” album as much as he did, that Jason made the move to Manhattan. Hired by Tim Devin, Jason got a job at the Tower Records at 4th and Broadway, which set off a ten year stint with Tower, all in Manhattan. Throughout our conversation Jason talks about many of the well known New York Tower folks; Steve Harman, Hedi Kim, Ryan Bland, Suzanne Barnett, Mark Yarabino, Arnie Lewis and many, many others. After working in the store for a spell, Jason moved into the unique position of 4th & Broadway's Payroll and Human Resources clerk, making sure hundreds got paid correctly every other week and assisting the managment team with the myriad of Human Resource issues that would arise. A stint in Steve Harman's Regional Office, followed by time working at Tower Lincoln Center took place before settling back in the Regional Office again with Tim Devin. Jason tells us about his happy, jovial Robert Smith encounter, an invite only Madonna performance, Joan Osbourne in “writing mode”, helping Shock G of Digital Underground (Humpty Hump) find records, staring at Paul Simon going down an escalator and mailing director John Waters his lost credit card to an address in Baltimore, Maryland. Join us for a wonderful episode about Tower life in the 90's and beyond.
Murs continues his multi-part series covering "The End Of The Beginning" his first album with Def Jux. Inside of a classic Queen Anne Victorian in West Oakland, photographer Traci Bartlow displays beautifully framed images of the people who shaped hip-hop culture here in the Bay Area, and across the nation. Photos of Outkast and Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes and ODB, hang alongside images of the Luniz and Shock-G, as well as E-40 and The Click. While the photos tell a story about what life was like in growing up in Oakland, it's her house, which is a photography museum and a boutique hotel, that tells the complex story of multiple generations of Black folks, land ownership and community appreciation. This episode originally aired on October 14, 2022

Once again Hip-Hop loses a great talent at such a young age, this time around it is Shock G the extremely charismatic, fonkee as hell Producer and MC (of mad aliases including the legendary Humpty Hump!) I am really going to let the music speak here and while making this tribute I noticed samples in Shock's production that I can't recall noticing before, as a fan of D.U. since the late 80's, Shock's death affected me greatly and I hope this tribute full of classic cuts, solo cuts, some B-Sides, rarities and remixes and beats that Shock G did or had a hand in for other artists truly does him justice. Scotty boy is on the road in the desert. That means we called in Steve Guile once more for quality show reinforcement. Steve is going to try to equal his effort last time out where he impressed someone with his depth of understanding about the space time continuum. Drinking takes place on this show, but it's nothing to fear. Luke likes to take the edge off to reduce the anxiety. Jeff Beck died, but Luke mixed him up with Jeff Buckley who died swimming in the Mississippi. That reminds Mike of the guy who recently survived 15-20 hours wading in the Gulf of Mexico after he got hammered and fell off a cruise ship. Luke says there is no way that someone can fall off a cruise ship because they have 10 foot walls. Steve says Christ never found his way inside of him despite a heavy dose of him in his childhood. Steve also grew up in Hawaii where they played on volcanic dirt. If you've never run the bases at your local professional baseball park, Steve says those infield dirts are slippery as hell. Have you seen the new film The Menu? Steve knows a bit about the restaurant it's set in. High pressure restaurants are hell. Mike recalls his days working at the Stillwater Grill in 2001 with his pal Morgan. Great memories! Also, Foghorn Leghorn is not Yosemite Sam. The Humpty Dance will always put a pep in your step. Steve and Mike are big fans and they say farewell to Humpty from the Humpty Dance, better known as Shock G, who died last year. It brings up Mike's memory of not getting busy in a Burger King bathroom even though he worked at a couple of them. We hit up your emails of course! Eric comes out with the tipping point as he is on the brink with the amount of tipping opportunities at even the most banal of eateries. The fellas are with the food service workers all day. Tip a lot and tip often. Those tips make a difference. Where do you stand on the battle between Jersey Mike's, Penn Station and Subway? Luke says the word complicated during the restaurant discussion which created a spark in Mike's mind to play Ain't No Blacks On The TV Screen from the Mad TV days. It's an example of a parody song being vastly superior to the original, which was Chris Rock's No Sex. Who is opening for Bill Cosby for his new comedy tour this summer? We HAVE to know. Who would stoop that low?!. Sean's email is about the options on HBO Max. Which one will you choose? We close this show with a classic from Jeff Beck called Greensleeves. If any of this nonsense strikes you, please email the show isitsafepod@gmail.com to improve the overall quality of future conversations. We love you all!

Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic. This is our Tame One Tribute. We hope you enjoy it! Episode 101 is an ode to 1990. This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade. Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day. The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby. It wasn't just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn't stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix. Who doesn't watch all of Goodfellas every time it's on TV? Doesn't everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone? Air Jordan V's were on every kid's feet. The Simpson's were on every kid's TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid's bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

If there was a poster that defined the indie hip-hop movement, it would have the face of The Mighty Mos Def on it. Whether you first heard him on My Kung Fu, The Love Song or Stakes Is High Remix, you immediately knew what you heard was special. We're talking a generational talent. Mos Def had the voice, the sound, the style, the charm, the humor, the endless stories and the ability to spit bars as great as singing those melodic hooks. A real dual-threat. Triple-threat when you factor in his acting chops. If LL Cool J is the face of Def Jam, Mos Def is the face of Rawkus. He breathed new life into hip-hop in the late 90s. Mos was the last Jedi able to carry on that Native Tongues torch. On Episode 85, we cover the catalog, the guest spots and discuss our favorite Mos Def moments. Welcome CHRIS HARFORD (Band of Changes, BlancDUBlanc) to Episode 044! What an honor & a privilege to host such an esteemed rock n' roll troubadour to the show. Prepare for a lengthy, profound powwow with more rabbit holes than you can shake a chalice at. Ep.044 also includes a short, sweet tribute to the late, great Shock G of Digital Underground, the East-Bay psychedelic funksta/hip-hop pioneer/Humpty Hump who recently passed away at just 57 years young. @ 5min: News! KRAZ Plus One + Upful Life = The Guest List @ 9min: Shock G R.I.P. Tribute @ 22min: Introducing CHRIS HARFORD / @ 27min : Interview Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Harford is a man of many talents, and wears numerous artistic hats. The veteran-rocker checks in from Central Jersey, and unpacks his own fascinating journey in progress. For over 90 minutes, Harford earnestly reveals an abundance of perspective. Among the more fulfilling conversations I've had the pleasure of hosting in the podcast medium. Right off the top, we go ham singing the praises of reggae music and its medicinal, spiritual qualities, especially in times of peril. The erstwhile sound-scientist expounds on his dub reggae syndicate BlancDUBlanc, before we hop in the wayback machine to the Elektra Records era with Chris Harford & the First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Plus a special Nov.2000 Amfibian show in Burlington VT, with Tom Marshall and Trey Anastasio, one of the first JamBase reviews yours truly ever published. From Bob Marley at the Philly Spectrum in '79, to Richard Thompson and Lee Perry working on his records, from London to Boston, New Hope PA and Hopewell, New Jersey too, Chris explores what it means to be in a Band of Changes, as he details his deep, filial roots with the likes of Sir Joe Russo, Scott Metzger, Marco Benevento, Chuck Treece, Dana Colley, Dean Ween, Robbie Seahag Mangano, plus the STAX-like scene and studio coming together with these cats (and more!) in the fertile Garden State soil. One of the more unbelievable tales Chris unspools is the story behind his dub-cover EP of "Wind of Change", yep, you read that right, the titanic political power ballad from the halcyon days of the hair-band era. This is my favorite part in a conversation filled with choice nuggets. All that jazz plus a tribute to Shock G of Digital Underground, who recently transitioned, truly a gut punch in a pandemic-year that seemingly never ends. It's hard to keep up, or even grieve, with so much loss, however I felt called to send my man Shock G (Gregory Jacobs) up with his propers, and his flowers. Long Live this Son of the P!
