“No matter how great and good a man may be, executive aggrandizement is not safe for democracy.” This is the story of Franklin's second term and his battle with the Supreme Court. It's no secret that SCOTUS hasn't really been ruling in the New Deal's favor. But with such an overwhelming victory at the polls, Franklin feels confident that he can circumvent that by upping the number of judges from nine to fifteen and appointing people who see the vision. But what does the public make of it? What does Congress think? Is this court-packing plan a timely reform? Or is it a blatant disregard for the constitutional concept of checks and balances? It's incredibly polarizing, so much so that members of Congress are willing to argue, filibuster, and even die over the bill. The Fantasy/Animation Footnotes continue with this look at Disney authorship and the industry of animation via a turn to the celebrated Nine Old Men, a core group of directors and artists involved with the consolidated of the Disney aesthetic and a key component of its hyper-realist visual style. Listen as Chris maps some of the Nine Old Men's key personnel and their contribution to the refinement of animation's illusion of life credentials; questions of labour and the historical celebration of cel-animation's best practice; the highly gendered image of technological development and occlusion of women from Disney's production hierarchies; and the ongoing mythology that surrounds the Nine Old Men as masters of the medium. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Season 2 continues with a bit of a milestone Disney film as both the first movie to be developed after Walt's death and the first to be released on VHS, Disney's Robin Hood. How much has nostalgia played into its placement on the list? Clint, Cal, and Alex are here to break it all down, digging into the incredible pedigree behind the film, including Don Bluth who went on to create such classics as An American Tale and The Land Before Time, and one of Disney's “Nine Old Men”, Director Wolfgang Reitherman, whose previous credits include such heavy hitters as Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty and more. Does this film stack up to all those other classics? Did it start the furry movement? More importantly, does it belong on the list? Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm is busy roaming around small forest communities robbing the poor to feed the rich… CineFix Top 100 is available on all your podcast networks including: Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/02lznfKZ2gCnBwFoTgKlYr Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cinefix-top-100/id1693413490 Amazon Music https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/80256cff-2174-4d69-a9c7-8b565e96e39b CineFix Top 100 is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Ollie Johnston was an early and influential animator at the Disney Company, and worked on the company's animated movies from the very first full-length one. He is remembered by the company today in several different and special ways. Here is his amazing story. It is one you are sure to love... Les Clark was one of the longest-serving animators at the Walt Disney Company, and the first of the famous “Nine Old Men” animators of the early days of the company. He started out literally being discovered by Walt himself when he was working in an ice cream shop in high school. This is his story of making his way up in the company. https://ancestralfindings.com
Eric Larson was a Disney animator, and later became a Disney Legend. Yet, Eric did not want to work at the Disney Company in the beginning. He ended up there by chance, wanted to quit, was talked into staying, and became the company's longest-serving employee at the time of his retirement. Perhaps one of my favorite things about Disney is this: At first, it's all sparkle and magic. Whether you're visiting the parks or enjoying Disney movies, every bit of it is captivating in some of the most imaginative ways possible. And then, when you look deeper, you start to notice the real genius behind it all. Underneath the parks, the rides, the attractions, the movies, you'll find a level of craftsmanship that just isn't all that common. If we're speaking of Disney genius and craftsmanship, then we must talk about animator Milt Kahl. Some refer to him as the “master puppeteer”—and among all Disney animators, he is one of the most legendary. In fact, he was part of the Nine Old Men, a prominent group of animators responsible for so many Disney classics. Let's dive into his story so that we can be inspired by his talents and accomplishments...
Disney is one of my favorite topics, and that's because it has played a huge role in my life. There are many stories I could tell about my experiences with Disney, but one, in particular, stands out. When we lived in California, my parents bought us a yearly pass to Disneyland. Each week, we'd go there for a family fun day—despite the fact that traffic often meant it would take us three to four hours to get there. I've always found Disney inspiring, and one of the most inspiring parts of this entertainment giant is the people who made it what it is today. Wolfgang “Woolie” Reitherman was one of those people, and he's who I would like to focus on today to see what we can learn from his life story. Podcast Notes: https://ancestralfindings.com/wolfgang-reitherman-nine-old-men/
Ward Kimball stands as one of the most prominent figures to emerge from Disney history. Let's learn about the many passions that inspired him.
Animator Frank Thomas made movie magic in close to twenty Walt Disney Studios animated films. Let's learn about his life... Podcast Notes: https://ancestralfindings.com/frank-thomas-nine-old-men
Marc Davis is one of the best-known animators at the Disney Company. In fact, he is one of the company's original panel of respected animators that were depended upon to make the early Disney cartoon movies magical. He also had an important hand in designing many of the characters on the iconic Disney theme park rides. Here is his story. Podcast Notes: https://ancestralfindings.com/marc-davis-nine-old-men
As the Renaissance Era draws to a close, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers head back to the orchestra pit for another blast of absolute music in Fantasia 2000. Plus, we rhapsodise about the Rhapsody In Blue sequence, explore the legacy of space whales and Payakan the mighty Tulkun, admit the first ever live-action Disniversity Legend, take a fateful trip to the LEGO shop, briefly reunite the Nine Old Men, and uncover more emo folk-tales by Hans Christian Andersen. Oh, and Sam gets arrested by the Pete Police. Sound the sirens! This may be difficult to consider in an era where Disney is arguably the world's most powerful entertainment conglomerate, but there was a period where the company was in a precarious state (multiple periods actually, but we're talking about the postwar era). Disney was in massive debt in the late 40's and the company could've very easily gone under. The world might've become a very different place had the considerable investment in Cinderella had yielded a flop, but the 1950 film turned out to be the studio's biggest hit in decades. Cinderella's success put Disney back in the black, ensured the continuation of the studio's animated features, and gave Walt Disney enough capital to begin pursuing his goal of building a theme park in California. The movie itself also set a number of noteworthy precedents for Disney fare. It's the first Disney movie to have its soundtrack get a commercial release, it's the first film to feature every member of the venerable animation crew known as "The Nine Old Men", it's possibly the first movie to feature multitracked vocal effects, and it solidified many of the tropes associated with the Disney Princess archetype. This one might be even a bigger deal to the Disney canon than you may assume; Cinderella's castle is in the official Disney logo for a reason. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for a conversation about this impacting feature. Discussion topics include the history of the Cinderella story, the character's connections to the struggles of those working service jobs, whether Cinderella is too passive a figure in her own film, why Prince Charming is such a cipher in the movie, and why the mice steal every scene they're in. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support

In celebration of this weekend's D23 convention in Anaheim, California, we're happy to revisit this episode from August of 2018: Floyd Norman is an official Disney Legend, and so much more: Walt Disney's first full-time African-American animator, a contributor to such films as Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book, a disciple of Disney's legendary Nine Old Men, and a story man on such Pixar features as Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. What's more, as Leonard and Jessie have learned, he's a naturally funny man, a great storyteller, and a sweetheart of a guy with an irreverent sense of humor. He's even the subject of a first-class documentary called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Tune in for some great anecdotes and first-hand memories of Walt Disney. Welcome Folks - you are listening to the Pencil Pushers Podcast and I'm your humble host Mike Rosado. Today, we share my talk with the legendary animator, John Pomeroy - somebody, who in my opinion, is one of the most important figures in the field for the past 50 years. Listen in as we twist and twirl through his storied career working under the tutelage of the Nine Old Men at Disney, teaming up with Don Bluth and Gary Goldman to create their own animation studio, creating classics like The Secret of Nimh, American Tail and Land Before Time, coming back back to Disney as lead animator for Pocohontas, Atlantis, Fantasia 2000 and more. We also chat about burnout, how to have a successful work life balance, and what he's doing next with his new online animation school, Pomeroy Art Academy. This one is a real banger as our convo starts right out of the gates on how he, Don and Gary took a massive gamble and helped the world fall in love with animation again. And so, without further ado, I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy our talk with John. The Pencil Pushers Podcast is a celebration of the hand-drawn arts. I'll be interviewing friends and idols in illustration, animation, comic-art, and more. - Mike Rosado https://www.instagram.com/ekimodasor/ Produced and edited by Trujillo Media

We're kicking off Season 3 of The Disney Buzz with an appreciation fest for Disney cats. Friend of the Show Lee Pedigo joins us for a round of Alley Cat drinks as we countdown our favorite Disney cats and have a celebratory discussion of The Aristocats in honor of its 50th anniversary this year. We also do a rundown of what's coming to WDW in 2020 and honor one of Walt's Nine Old Men, Wolfgang Reitherman, in this week's Legends Corner.
One of Disney's “Nine Old Men,” Ward Kimball was already a Disney Legend by the time he was in his late 20's. He'd worked on classic animated films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and many more. But it was his hobby away from work that may have made his biggest contribution to Disney history. Check out the Word of the Week – Kimball. Disney Legend Ward Kimball's biggest contribution to the history of the Disney Company just might have been a hobby that he worked on in his backyard.

Eric Larson was truly one of the greats of Disney animation. He was one of Walt's Nine Old Men and was best known for animating Figaro in "Pinocchio," Friend Owl in "Bambi" and Peg in "Lady and the Tramp." He also worked on other classics including "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Fantasia," "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland," "Peter Pan" and "Sleeping Beauty." His greatest legacy, however, may be as the teacher and mentor to an entire generation of young animators that joined Disney in the 1970s and '80s. He had a passion for his art and a commitment to uphold the standards established by Walt Disney. Eric's memoir, "50 Years in the Mouse House," is a fascinating and heartfelt testament to that passion. His book, however, was almost lost forever, and the story of Didier Ghez's search for the missing manuscript is nearly as compelling as Eric Larson's life itself. Didier edited Eric Larson's original manuscript and combined it with material taken from interviews Larson gave and lectures he presented at the Walt Disney Studios. Didier adds "50 Years in the Mouse House" to his impressive output of historical Disney works including all 16 volumes of "Walt's People" and his upcoming tribute to Disney concept artists, "They Drew as They Pleased." Didier Ghez is my guest today in "The Mouse Castle Lounge." www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
Two weeks ago in the Lounge, Tim began a two-part conversation with Steve Hulett. In the 1970s and 80s, Steve was a story man at Disney Animation, following in the footsteps of his father, longtime Disney artist Ralph Hulett. In part one, Steve shared how he started his career at Disney—working for writer Larry Clemmons—and ten years later, how his Disney career ended. Today, in part two, Steve tells more behind-the-scenes stories about some of the Nine Old Men including Woolie Reithermann, Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. Steve talks candidly about the departure of Don Bluth and a group of other Disney animators to form their own studio in 1979, the challenge of working for animator and future Disney Legend Ken Anderson, the arrival of Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg in the mid 1980s, and finally, the notorious internal memo that incited the wrath of Disney Feature Animation president Peter Schneider. Steve Hulett is Tim's guest today in The Mouse Castle Lounge. You can read more about Steve Hulett's Disney exploits in his book "Mouse in Transition: An Insider's Look at Disney Feature Animation," available from Amazon.com and Theme Park Press. www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
For ten years in the 1970s and 80s, Steve Hulett was a story man at Disney Animation, following in the footsteps of his father, longtime Disney artist Ralph Hulett. Steve was with the company during the most unique of times, the period after Walt Disney's death--when his company was struggling to find its identity--until it came back in a big way under the leadership of Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Frank Wells. It was a time when the old guard of Disney animation, the Nine Old Men, were making way for the new blood of Disney Animation, people like Glen Keane, Don Bluth, John Lasseter and Tim Burton. In his book, "Mouse in Transition," Steve Hulett tells candid tales about his years at Disney where he worked on such films as "The Fox and the Hound," "The Black Cauldron" and "The Great Mouse Detective." In addition to recalling the creative work, Steve shares plenty of stories about the office politics and ego clashes that went on behind the scenes. In part one of Tim's conversation with him today, Steve touches on a few of those stories, as well as a memorable encounter with Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney. www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
