The idea of an Annie Part II had actually been floating around since 1982, while the original Annie was still on Broadway, and rather than a traditional sequel, the production was framed as a continuation of the original story, beginning six weeks after the events of Annie, with Miss Hannigan devising her revenge from prison. This continuing story was initially set to open on Broadway in 1983, just months after the original closed. However, it would take until June of 1989 before the show would finally announce an opening date, first in Washington, DC then on Broadway. However, what started out as Miss Hannigan's Revenge became a revenge of a different kind altogether. And the events that followed underscore a broader truth about Broadway (one that resonates throughout the episodes of this podcast): that even the most seasoned and award-winning of creators can still produce a flop. With the fourth word of Genesis, the second inversion arrives. At this rate, I may not get far, because here a long pause is required on this word. “In the beginning, God…” There is no word more argued about, discussed, twisted, bargained over, or rejected than the word God. We all have some idea what it means. But more importantly, what we believe at this top level affects the heart and mind. What we believe about this fourth word of the bible ultimately directs how we live. This acceptance or rejection of God, and what that word means, acts like a compass along the journey of life. Where we end up depends on the compass we use as well. We can have wildly different understandings of it, but let me stop here to address the most common errors: the word God means neither cop nor genie. Many bad understandings regarding God fall into either the cop or the genie category. For some, he is both a genie and a cop. But this inversion suggests to you that he is neither. He is several things that can be asserted with confidence, that is, with faith, which is what the word confidence means:* He is one. He exists. He is first.* He is the sheer act of “being” itself.* He is an all-powerful Creator. * He is a loving father, not a bully, who desires your return.* He is true, good, and beautiful. That is all you need to know for your mental health regarding this inversion. Good night! The end. But clearly more must be said, even though we could (and should) just contemplate all of these in silence. There is much to be said, so starting from the top, this inversion will focus on the oneness of God.He is not many. He is not none. He is one. (Truly, he is three-in-one, but even then he is one. Later inversions will discuss the Trinity.) Genesis is not a shouting match, but it is quietly entering a deadly serious argument at this point. Genesis is in dispute with every other culture and myth in the world. By this fourth word, the first book of Moses sets his belief apart from every culture - literally, every culture - that surrounds him. Before Moses, Abraham believed the same, but Moses and his scribes wrote it down. This is important, because had he not written it down, Jesus would not have said so often, “It is written…” Jesus invokes the written word of Moses and the Prophets rather often, especially to rebuke the devil during the temptations in the wilderness. If you believe Jesus is God, and Jesus quotes what is “written” by Moses and the Prophets, then these words have weight - infinite weight - in how to view the world and, by extension, how we should live our lives. Thus, what we think of God matters greatly in how we view scripture, the world, and the spiritual life. If Jesus is God, and Jesus quotes scripture, and God inspired scripture, then God used human authors to convey his eternal word. This makes for a simple waterfall set of conditions that fall like gravity into place:If Jesus is God… And Jesus quotes scripture as the word of God… Then Jesus inspired the sacred writers… Meaning Jesus authored the scriptures.That was mighty kind of God, in my opinion, to give us the scriptures. Even more kind, he came down to us in the form of man to go ahead and make things more clear to the apostles so they could pass on the tradition and teach us. But this should give you some idea about why we all like to argue about scripture. We argue because we disagree about who or what is God. Further, we argue about how he reveals himself, and to whom. But most of all, we argue because we dislike authority and the Catholic Church believes it has the teaching authority. This is why we argue. Even atheists love to argue about all of this, but they come at scripture wearing a bent pair of glasses, because the word God means something very different if you reject the idea of God. Likewise, you cannot understand the cross of Christ and the resurrection without at least getting the foundational idea of God in place first, not to mention the idea of an ultimate authority in heaven and on earth. Thus, it's no surprise that the “word of God” only makes sense if you believe in the supernatural existence of God. Truly, reading the bible without belief in God is like reading a bike repair manual without believing in bikes. Even if you believe in God, the perception of it leads to wildly different conclusions, which is why we have such wide-ranging belief systems as Islam and Jehovah's Witnesses and thirty-one flavors of Protestant churches. The bible is a difficult read, and this is why the “bible alone” is insufficient as a teaching authority, because we can see with our own eyes how different each group uses that teaching authority.Where we are at in this opening line of the bible is the origin story of all creation. Every culture needs a creation story. Every culture has one, and even atheists have a faith-based creation story. We certainly have our stories about the creation of America, just as the Soviets did (or tried to), or the Italians, or the English, so this should not seem odd to anyone. Comic books have an origin issue. Businesses have foundation narratives. My favorite pie shop, Betty's Pies (“The Best Pies in Minnesota”) has a founding story about Betty. Without a story, we are left stuck in a no-man's-land. We're like the orphan Annie who runs away from Miss Hannigan in search of her real parents. As it turns out, the beginnings of things need a cause, a character, a maker, or doer, or a force. The choices for who lifted the curtain on this grand play called “Creation” come in three sizes: many, one, or none. Also, you cannot mix these - you must pick one, and only one. Genesis declares that the answer is one. And if you think you don't have to choose, you are incorrect. Really, you have already chosen. You may think you have chosen in your mind, but you choose by how you live today and every day. Actions reveal the choice, as Jesus described in the great Parable of the Two Sons. Actions speak louder than words. Every seeker must accept or reject God's oneness. For the seeker, the treasure to be found is the truth, but only one choice is not fool's gold. Every angsty teen, every doubting Thomas, every physicist, every Greek mythologist, every internet atheist, every Christian and Muslim - truly, anyone who is seeking truth must venture into the test of oneness. Genesis is inverting the worldview that accepts the “many gods” and the “no gods” hypotheses. Genesis states that there is one God.This may seem trivial but it's not. Genesis declares a truth that many do not want to be true. And even those who say “Amen” often do not fully understand the implications of what this “oneness” means. Greek myth has a story of creation. The old mythology is a search for the truth, just as astronomy, psychology, and chemistry are also deep investigations into aspects of truth. And we all want the truth, more than anything, except for when we want to do something that requires a different truth. But what is truth? Ah, that is the question. Now we are getting warmer. Hamlet asked the great question of “To be or not to be,” and Hamlet was right. That is indeed the question. He was close to the answer just by using the word “being.” What does it mean “to be”? We are getting warmer still. Pontius Pilate, long before the fictional Hamlet, said it even better when he asked Jesus straight up: “What is truth?” This question of “What is truth?” and “What does it mean to be?” are related. When Moses asks for God's name at the burning bush, God tells him that his name is “I AM”. I found this rather confusing as a child. But just consider what “I AM” means. This is the verb for “to be.” God might have said it another way, as in “I BE.” In fact, that phrase sounds like it could be the name of a modern pop song. “To be” is to have come from God. Being comes from God. Being and truth both come from the simple, beautiful, transcendent oneness of God. God is to be. John Keats said “Beauty is truth,” but God's being and truth go together with beauty. Descartes said “I think, therefore I am,” but thinking is not being. No, God is “to be” and he created us, giving us our being. In any case, it's worth pointing out that Zeus is none of these things: he is not good, true, or beautiful. Zeus is an ugly power-hungry shape-shifting rapist. That is not the God of the bible. This inversion is easy to spot if living in the ancient world. Today, we have different versions of the pagan gods, but they are still around. They have moved into other forms, such as honor, wealth, pleasure, and power - but rest assured, for every god of the ancients, we worship strange versions of it now. More important, however, is the subtle inversion regarding Zeus and every other contender god. None of the other gods are the act of “being.” Again, God's name is “I AM.” In most stories about Zeus, he shifts into the shape of a swan or a bull, so he could say the opposite: “I am who I am not.” This is exactly what the shape-shifting devil presents to Eve: a lie. Once again, like in the first inversion, regarding the nature of time having a beginning, a middle, and an end, there is one Creator, one “sheer act of Being,” and one source of all truth. This, once again, is an inversion upon which you can rest your head, where your finite mind can focus. One true God is much better to aim your meditation toward than nothingness, and much more sane than thinking about the pantheon of Greek and Sumerian gods. However, when in prayer, you can easily find out which gods you worship, because your distractions will lead you there. The distractions reveal your fragmented understanding of God, as they pull you away from the oneness of God. Knowing that God is one is an act of faith, because no amount of proof can sway the mind alone to accept it. But it is an act of faith anchored in reason. And reason can take you to the doorstep that there is one Creator, but faith is needed to knock on the door. As St. John Paul II wrote, faith and reason are the two wings that make us fly. St. Anselm and St.Thomas Aquinas presented rational arguments of the “ways” to know that God is one, and that God is logical, and that God is beautiful. People can and will argue until the end of time over God's existence - and this is a good thing because skeptics often come to believe in the oneness of God in a most profound way, such as Augustine, Dostoyevsky, or Antony Flew. To doubt the oneness of God is not a defect, it is part of the journey back to God. However, argument will only take you to the door. You still have to knock, enter, kneel, and pray. This is a mystery and it is wonderful. God seems to have designed it this way for our own good. The most common doubt today is about God's existence. But there is no existence at all without God, who is the act of being itself. When we doubt God's existence, we are much like the “self-made” billionaire who thinks his fortune came entirely from himself instead of the complex set of circumstances that were needed to allow for his success. In his self-satisfaction, the billionaire ignores the whole and only sees himself. Sure, he may have worked hard, but he didn't create the infrastructure, culture, opportunities, timing, talent, and need that led to his wealth. He did not educate himself or feed himself as a child. In other words, he sees everything in terms of the self. (Hint: we are all the billionaires in this metaphor).The pursuit of wealth is a search for meaning, as are the pursuits of pleasure, honor, and power. But the real search is for the origin story, the place of rest, the giver of life - we are searching for home - but we confuse where that place is at. Seekers who are burdened with the burning need to find the truth will undoubtedly try on the differing hypotheses of “many gods” and “zero gods” before they really look into the possibility of “one God.” With the Zero hypothesis, this leaves only the self and the void to find answers - there is no soul to save. With the Many hypothesis, it leads to a flattening and scattering, a divided mind and separated body and soul, a rudderless chase. With the One hypothesis, there is no confusion. There is a body and a soul, and one source, one origin, one beginning, one ending. This puts solid ground underfoot and a proper heaven overhead. It almost seems too simple of an answer, because there is no struggle. Mythology seems more exciting, more dramatic (but that is the next inversion after this one to discuss). The One hypothesis of Genesis also shrugs off the coercive policemen concept, as God creates out of his goodness. He is the Artist who creates because he can create. Moreover, God creates and does not engage in transactions with his creation, but rather made everything for its beauty. He is a great artist who creates out of love and calls all of this creation to himself. St. Anselm called the Christian search a way of “faith seeking understanding.” You might say that those who believe in Greek myth or pure materialism also have a faith seeking understanding. Even the atheist is a believer in no gods, and that a faith in nothing must seek understanding through reason alone. With all texts, with all searches, we must take something on faith to find the truth. This is unavoidable. To compare a creation story from Greek myth, from Hesiod, against Genesis, let's take just the opening lines:Here's the opening from Hesiod's creation story (after he finishes praising the Muses):In the beginning there was only Chaos, the Abyss, but then Gaia, the Earth, came into being…With that one line, we have a whole cast of characters to consider, and it only expands from there. With Hesiod, we don't just have to bother with the Muses, now we have three more beings, and soon there are about fifty. Genesis starts much cleaner, simpler. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.Done. The writer of Genesis starts out with a roundhouse. He says, “Let's cut the nonsense: God was first and created everything.” So much is said in so few words. The first line of Genesis is a masterful sentence that never stops speaking. But what else is the fourth word of the bible saying? What is God? We know there are basically three options: no gods, many gods, or one God. If the bible is declaring one God, which it is, what does that mean for us? Our idea of God has everything to do with where we came from and where we think we are going. I'm not yet talking about the big “why,” but just the where for now: where did we come from and where are we going? I often think of the analogy of trying to fly a rocket to the moon. First, the rocket must be pointed upward, not toward the earth. The Zero gods hypothesis aims the rocket at the ground. That rocket is going nowhere. The One hypothesis and the Many hypothesis is aiming the rocket upward. But clearly, that is not enough, for even a rocket aimed upward must have precise calculations to reach its target. Missing by a single degree will leave the crew lost in outer space. This inversion is about calibrating and setting the sights on the right target, charting the destination. Declaring that there is one God, not many, and not zero, will get you going in the right direction (and later inversions will fine-tune the landing). With this inversion coming so soon in sacred scripture, this sets apart the people of Moses from all surrounding families and nations. The Canaanites and Egyptians of Biblical fame did not have one God, they had many. Abraham must have seemed a strange man in the ancient world and even had to leave his home in order to follow the one God. His city likely worshipped a moon god, meaning their rocket was aimed at the wrong heavenly body. Abraham must depart because he knows that will end in disaster. His faith in God Most High is not the norm. It's not popular. But he knows it is the truth. Even today, Abraham would have to leave home, because we still have many gods. We have believers in no gods and believers in many gods, and then we have believers in the one God. Mythology as we know it today is what we refer to when we want to talk about dead religions. When the Sumerians were worshipping moon gods or the Greeks were rocking out at a Dionysus fest, they were not saying, “Man, I love our mythology!” No, those gods and goddesses were real to them, or at least some of them. The household gods of Romans, which taught men and women to live virtuously, were not like Calico Critter figurines that didn't mean anything to them. These were meaningful objects, symbols of unseen realities. Genesis, in its quiet boldness, states out loud that all of these little gods are ugly babies. Really, the sacred writer just cannot pretend any longer - these are false gods. Thus, these are fighting words for people and nations who have entire lives, rituals, and power structures built around these gods. Every domain of life, from hearth and home to war and sex, all had a god or goddess. Genesis rejects all of them. We have them today too, which we will get to later. Again, we have lived with the idea of one God so long that we cannot comprehend how hard it was for Abraham and Moses to say, “All of your gods are fake. Only one is real.” This is the inversion that brings much hatred against Jews and Catholics to this day. Yet while we nod along about the idea of one God, we often live as if there were Many or Zero. But why? Why is it so irritating to believers in the Zero or Many hypotheses? Why does saying, “There is only one God” irritate us? Why does saying, “There are no gods” bother people? Why does saying “There are many gods” make us do a double-take? The reason is that it matters immensely, because like our view of time, our sanity and cosmology rests upon: 1.) Does God exist? And if the answer is yes, then: 2.) What is the nature of that being (or beings)? The question of whether or not God exists is fundamental to how your life is lived, how your family eats, and how your government operates. This is where we build our lives. Like it or not, upon this rock we stack up all other things. And this choice always requires an act of faith. Even if we select the Zero hypothesis, that is an act of faith. The internet atheists make an act of faith when they say, “There are no gods or God” just as much as when a Catholic says, “Credo in unum Deum” (I believe in one God). The “unbelievers” actually are believers, they just subscribe to the belief that there is only matter and energy. That is a creed, also. There is no proof for either side that can be used to win the other over by pure argument or technique. It is not pure geometry. Nor are feelings enough to prove anything. There is only an act of faith in the end. The act of faith in One God, Many gods, or Zero gods comes down to an act of the will, where we submit our will and intellect to a choice. When I felt there were no gods, never once did I say, “God help me be willing to be willing to believe no gods exist.” Why not? Because I didn't want to believe in God or gods. I wanted to mock the idea that God existed, crown Jesus with thorns, and be unburdened by the consequences of what it means to say “God exists.” Because if you say those words, then it follows that God is not just matter. Then it follows that God matters. Then it matters in how you live your life. But wait - the bible just says “God” in Genesis 1:1, it doesn't give any details. What kind of God is this one God? Is this the clockmaker God of the Deists? Is it a vindictive God? Is it a God merely made in our likeness? Is this an invented God to control people? Is this a God of convenience for power? Is this a God you can barter with? Is this a God who built the universe and then departed, or is he watching us with his many eyeballs right now? These are the questions that the rest of the bible answers. But the Catechism of the Catholic Church has a nice little paragraph to help us here.Since our knowledge of God is limited, our language about him is equally so. We can name God only by taking creatures as our starting point, and in accordance with our limited human ways of knowing and thinking.God transcends all creatures. We must therefore continually purify our language of everything in it that is limited, image-bound or imperfect, if we are not to confuse our image of God--"the inexpressible, the incomprehensible, the invisible, the ungraspable"--with our human representations. Our human words always fall short of the mystery of God. (CCC 40-42) In this inversion, we can start small, without diving into the nature of God too far. It's often easier to say what God is not than to say what God is, because being bound in time and space does not allow us the language to describe God, but it allows us to know there is a God. Once again, we are given all that we need for salvation and sanity, not every last detail that we want out of curiosity. Just as hunger goes with our craving for food, and our thirst matches our need for water, so does our spiritual longing pair nicely with the God that created all things. Our hearts seek God, and God is all that can quench that seeking thirst. But mostly, in this inversion, what Genesis is saying is:* God exists.* God is one.* God was first.* God created. This inversion marks a departure from all other creation stories. It casts out all myth systems and modern atheism. In the Greek creation story, Chaos gets first billing and then mother Earth just pops into being, as if birthed by itself. The point that Genesis makes is that the first mention of any “being” is God, who is “Being Itself.” Chaos is not first. Earth is not first. Nothing is first. But God precedes that nothing. Surely it is proper for the first character of the bible to be God, from whom all being is sustained. “It is right and just,” as we say at the Catholic Mass. This is also why Genesis is so memorable. It's simple. It's beautiful. It's good. No one memorizes Hesiod, not just because it's longer, but because it's not as good, not as simple. We don't memorize Hesiod because it's false. It lacks the three transcendentals of goodness, truth, and beauty. Many people know the opening line of the bible because it is terrific writing and speaks a truth that makes sense, even if many wish it wasn't so. We can't look away from Genesis for a reason: it is a masterpiece, and masterpieces do something to us. The first eleven chapters of Genesis cover massive territory, but there is nothing that says quite so much as the very first line. This is much like the Apostles' Creed, with the opening line of “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth.” A lifetime can be spent meditating on that alone. To meditate on Chaos and the Abyss does not satisfy in the same way. In fact, Chaos and Abyss in capitalized letters sound like a couple of rollercoasters at Six Flags or Cedar Point. (What a strange time to be alive, when we name our fun distractions after the things that terrify us - Leviathan, Behemoth, Goliath, Medusa…I suspect an amusement park will just go all in and soon name a rollercoaster “Satan, the Accuser,” but let's not get ahead of future inversions to be discussed.)I realize that there are many differing accounts of the Greek, Sumerian, and Roman creation stories, so Hesiod's writing is not the only version. However, all of them start with something other than one God. This is why the inversion of Genesis is so stark in contrast. This inversion, of coming to know that there is one God, is not like the fleeting thrill of reading about Chaos and Gaia. This is no cheap Double-Bubble parade gum that grows stale after a short time, but rather it is endless food for the mind and the soul. The idea of one God, on its face, does not seem as interesting as a tale that begins with Chaos, the Abyss, and Gaia's spontaneous generation. If I had two movie choices to select from, I would choose the one starring Chaos in the leading role. But Genesis is not a movie. It is not about entertainment. Genesis is going higher and deeper than what Hollywood or Greek myth does. Genesis does not set out to titillate and persuade. So while Chaos may be more exciting in the short term, it makes far more sense logically and spiritually that before all things were, God is. And merely four words into Genesis, the sacred writer has inverted the nature of time, and asserted the existence of one God, and declared the number of God is One. This is why, as these inversions gather together, it becomes increasingly clear why the tribes of Jacob cannot help but be called “the chosen people,” because these differences are not small, not subtle, but glaring and sharp, like a knife that carves them out from a world of very different expressions of faith. In closing, the mention of God in Genesis upends other worldviews. We believe that God needs no pre-existent thing or any help in order to create, nor is creation any sort of necessary emanation from the divine substance. God creates freely "out of nothing":If God had drawn the world from pre-existent matter, what would be so extraordinary in that? A human artisan makes from a given material whatever he wants, while God shows his power by starting from nothing to make all he wants. (CCC 296)God exists. God is one. God is first. Many people have gotten caught up in an academic distraction about the word Elohim being used in various lines of the bible. This is where personal interpretation of the bible can go wild, like college students on spring break. This is where deep dives into Giants and extra-biblical texts like the Book of Enoch and the Divine Council become unhealthy distractions. Interpretation of the bible should never be approached as a research exercise, but as an encounter with God, in a living tradition. If there are two books to keep on your shelf, or to take along to a desert island, to keep from getting lost or going insane, it is these: The Bible and The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Many heresies start when the idea of the oneness of God is discarded or doubted. Rest assured, however, that God is one, even if he is three-in-one. The many and none hypotheses are upside-down worlds. The oneness of the Trinity has fingerprints all over the bible, even in the opening line. The Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is still one God. Yes, there are other created spirits, like angels, but there is no other God than the one true God, also known as God Most High. The Trinity is beyond full comprehension, and this is a wonderful mystery to pray on. As always, prayer is the key, as it pleases God and is offered like heavenly incense to Him. To embrace the certainty of God while letting go of the desire for all divine data is a liberating act for your mind, body, and soul. The certainty and mystery of God's oneness is glorious. With that, let's move to the next inversion, which happens in the fifth word of the bible, which is the word “created.” This is a public episode. Annie ha conocido muchas adaptaciones tanto en programas de radio, como en películas, telemovies y por supuesto al musical que hoy vamos a comentar. Estrenado en Broadway en 1977 con enorme éxito se sigue reponiendo con cierta asiduidad e incluso lo hemos visto en España, donde aparece de cuando en cuando de gira por la península. It's 2018. I'm working with a Syrian-born American filmmaker named Sam to get him ready to hit the TEDx stage. We're forming the foundation of his Talk--his idea worth spreading--when I ask him, “Why was making this particular film so important to you?” And he responds, “It's imperative to amplify the voices of what Syrians are going through. Their voices are muted right now and giving voice to the voiceless should be an obligation. That's why people literally risked their lives to make this film.” With that, we have his idea worth spreading: For society to survive, the voices of repressed people must be revived.  By the way, Sam's film, Little Gandhi, becomes the first official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film and goes on to win several awards. And most importantly of all, Sam's willingness to stand up for and speak on what he believes has changed individual and collective stories around the world...which leads me to my special guest today! Lynn Andrews is a versatile artist who has been standing up for what she believes, literally. As a singer, actress, and writer, she has a stake in bringing stories to life as part of her life's work and is fresh off the picket line protesting as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, listen in as she and I dive into the idea of using your story to stand up and speak up, whether your voice matters at all, and how to influence the stories that are told. The New York Times praised her, saying she "has a wonderful way with a shimmy." During her time in New York, Lynn showcased her singer-songwriter abilities as one-third of the girl group The Shirtwaist Sisters, highlighted by the NPR Tiny Desk competition. In 2017, Lynn made her way to Los Angeles, where she appeared in popular television shows like The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and Dead To Me, as well as the critically acclaimed film The Dark and the Wicked. Her recent appearances on The Resident and American Auto continue to solidify her status as an accomplished and skillful performer. We get further into Tessa's lust for domineering bald men, Daddy Warbucks (Albert Finney) and explore the possibility of high class cannibalism. In the search for Annie's real parents, Miss Hannigan's brother Rooster (Tim Curry) and his girlfriend Lily St. Regis (Bernadette Peters) attempt to scam Daddy for the 50k reward. Leapin' Lizards! We watched Annie (1982) with our friend Brad Liberti and I think we're gonna like it here! Whether you like it or not, this movie holds a place in our collective consciousness. The story of the little orphan girl who made it out of the slums and into the mansion of a misanthropic oligarch is deeply entrenched in our early movie watching memories. Some of us fantasized about being Annie and going off to live in an estate the size of the Mall of America with a staff peppered with racial stereotypes. Others dreamt of making bathtub gin, while wearing costume jewelry and lingerie. Either way, this movie is iconic. The trio of Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters is what gay rights are made of. The opening number of Hard Knock Life featuring orphan girls flipping, stomping and bucking across Miss Hannigan's orphanage give us life (Matilda could never). And I don't care what your orientation is, who didn't fall in love with Ann Reinking as Daddy Warbucks' secretary/love interest Grace? Maybe the movie buried the lead and underplayed “Tomorrow” and maybe the movie differs a little too much from the stage production. This musical might be better in your memory as a child, but it still brings out a smile in the cynic in all of us. Laura left her twin behind and found herself working professionally before she hit her teens. Laura appeared on Broadway in SMILE with Jodi Benson (the Little Mermaid). Daniele Lawson talks her new movie "King Richard" with Will Smith (in theaters now), growing up in the business, and a role she really wanted!About Daniele:Daniele Denise Lawson (Dani) is an American actress who was born and raised in Southern California. She knew early on that she wanted a career in the entertainment industry when she discovered her passion for dancing. At the early age of 2, she began dancing with many companies such as Fantasia Dance Ensemble, Victory Praise Dancers and Faithful Dance Company. From there, she booked her first national commercial at 4 years old with Toyota, then signed with Youth Talent Connection Agency. With her new agency, she went on to book many more national commercials such as AT&T, Wells Fargo Bank, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Comcast Xfinity, Sprite and more. At 6 years old Daniele got the opportunity to dance in the Just Dance Kids 2 video game.Daniele also has extensive training throughout her career, where she studied voice, participated in the Impact Performing Arts Conservatory. At the Conservatory, she took ballet, jazz, modern dance, praise dance, tap, acting classes and vocal lessons. Daniele loves theater and during her years at Impact she played many roles such as Dorothy in The Wiz, Miss Hannigan in Annie, Zazu in The Lion King, and Iago from Aladdin.Daniele has studied acting under Lisa Picotte, Sonya Leslie, and The Groundlings to name a few. Daniele was cast in the role of “Isha Price” in the anticipated feature film, King Richard starring alongside Will Smith. The movie is set to be released on November 19, 2021.When Daniele is not acting she loves creating fashion and make-up looks. "Tomorrow is now" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1989's Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge and 1993's Annie Warbucks on episode twenty of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT ANNIE 2: MISS HANNIGAN'S REVENGE The first official attempt at a sequel to the hit Broadway musical Annie, Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge follows the continued story of villainous Miss Hannigan as she escapes from prison to marry Daddy Warbucks, steal his fortune, and rid the world of of Little Orphan Annie once and for all. The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Martin Charin, and music by Charles Strouse. At the closing performance of Annie 1, lyricist Martin Charnin stood onstage and told the audience that the story of Annie was not over and that a sequel to the musical was already in the works. Six years later, hundreds of little girls in their red velvet dresses pilgrimaged to Washington D.C. with their parents to get a first look at what was excepted to be one of the biggest hits on Broadway the following season. Little did they know that Annie 2 would feature very little Annie at all and, instead, would tell the misguided redemption story of the first musical's villain. The entire project was a manifestation of the creative team's own insecurities of now being best-known for writing a fluffy kids musical and not their more-serious previous works... so, they set out to prove to the industry that they could follow it up with something more complex and grown up. The happy endings we see at the end of Annie 1 we find out were short lived. Daddy Warbucks discovers that he can't legally adopt Annie as a single father, so he must find a wife and because of that, Annie's future is uncertain. Grace, who has genuine feelings for the billionaire, must balance her career and personal life as she is passed over for other candidates. And Hannigan must come to terms with her quest for revenge and money as she confronts her own past and humanity. The creative team had hoped that fans of the original musical had grown up with them and would appreciate their cynical take on what happens after "tomorrow". Sadly, "something was missing", and what that was what attracted so many fans to the original piece - the absolute charm of Annie and her orphan friends. Throughout the run in D.C., desperate changes were made to the show to fix that tonal issues, including adding more Annie and additional orphan characters from the original, but a major financial backer decided to leave the show and it's scheduled Broadway run (the marquee was already up!) was cancelled. Annie 2 would then go through a process of rewrites and restructuring at the Goodspeed Opera House that would not only remove Miss Hannigan from the show's title, but from the show completely... eventually evolving into a different sequel titled Annie Warbucks!   Original Washington Cast Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan Fiely Matias as The Asp Gerry McIntyre as Punjab Lauren Mitchell as Grace Farrell Harve Presnell as Oliver Warbucks Danielle Findley as Annie Warbucks Beau as Sandy Marian Seldes as Mrs. Christmas Ronny Graham as Lionel McCoy Terrence P. The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Martin Charin, and music by Charles Strouse. Annie Warbucks was developed in a workshop at the Goodspeed Opera House, directed by Charnin and choreographed by Peter Gennaro and under the direction of Michael P. Price, Executive Director. The musical played several out-of-town tryouts, starting at the Marriott Lincolnshire, Chicago in February through April 1992 and then the Drury Lane in Oak Brook, Illinois, followed by a five city United States tour, including San Diego in October 1992. It was originally planned that Annie Warbucks would open on Broadway, but a "major investor pulled out". Some characters were cut and the budget reduced, leading to delays. The Off-Broadway production opened on August 9, 1993, at the Variety Arts Theatre. The cast included Harve Presnell as Warbucks, Donna McKechnie as Sheila Kelly, and Kathryn Zaremba in the title role. The show broke all off-Broadway box office records for the time, running for 200 performances. The producers considered moving the show from the Variety Arts Theater to Broadway, and they secured $2.5 million from an investor for a move to Broadway, but discovered they couldn't make the move in time to be eligible for Tony Award consideration, which was a big part of the reason for moving in the first place. A provision in the Tony rules required that a show had to transfer to a Tony-eligible theatre within 30 weeks of its original opening in order to qualify for any nominations. You're never too old to make your Broadway debut! Broadway News: Emilie Kouatchou made her debut as the first Black Christine Daaé on Broadway in The Phantom of The Opera. She will play Christine this week on Wednesday, November 3rd, Thursday, November 4th, and Saturday November 6th's matinee. Next week she'll lead on Monday November 8th, Thursday the 11th's matinee and Saturday the 13th's matinee. The following week she'll play on Monday November 15th, Thursday the 18th and Saturday the 20th's matinee. And during the last week of November she'll play on Monday the 22nd, Thursday the 25th and Saturday the 27th to round out the month. Audra McDonald is coming back to Broadway in Adrienne Kennedy's Ohio State Murders. This will make Kennedy's Broadway playwriting debut at the age of 90. Ohio State Murders will be directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, who last directed A Soldier's Play before the Broadway shutdown. We received a first look at Celina Smith as Annie in the upcoming Annie Live on NBC. Joined by Sandy the dog, the picture features Smith in Annie's iconic red dress. The photo also included Harry Connick Jr. as Daddy Warbucks and Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan. The live musical will air on NBC on December 2nd. Right in time for the holidays. The iconic Broadway snow globes have arrived back to Times Square. The “show globes” portray scenes inspired by Ain't Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations, Dear Evan Hansen, The Lion King, and Wicked. They will be on display through December 26 in the Broadway Plaza between 45th and 46th Streets. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal Studio's adaptation of Wicked was set to begin shooting in March in Atlanta. But the production's start has now been pushed to June, and it will relocate to the U.K. Reports are saying the delay will allow the filmmakers to get production efficiencies in-line, as Wicked will be the first production to shoot on stages at Universal's recently built Sky Studios in Elstree. Jon M. Chu is set to direct. Times Square is getting an exciting new performance space. The new indoor/outdoor stage is part of TSX Broadway, a 46-story tower currently under construction in Duffy Square at 1568 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Streets and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2023. Casting: Adrienne Warren took her final bow as Tina Turner on Halloween. She originated the role in London in 2018. She is now moving on after a deserved TONY Award and much praise. Nkeki Obi-Melekwe will now fill the role of Tina full time. Alex Hairston, Libby Lloyd, Anthony Murphy, Kristen Faith Oei and Michael Williams will join the cast of Diana for its return to Broadway next month. As previously announced, Jeanna de Waal will star as Diana, alongside Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. “Diana” is scheduled to resume preview performances at the Longacre Theatre on Nov. 2 ahead of an opening night on Nov. 17. Spring Awakening, will reunite for a special, one-night-only benefit concert. The concert will star original cast members Skylar Astin, Gerard Canonico, Lilli Cooper, Jennifer Damiano, Christine Eastbrook, John Gallagher, Jr., Gideon Glick, Jonathan Groff, Robert Hager, Brian Johnson, Lea Michele, Lauren Pritchard, Krysta Rodriguez, Stephen Spinella, Phoebe Strole, Jonny B. Wright, and Remy Zaken. Directed by the original director, Michael Mayer, the concert will take place on Monday, November 15 at 7 pm ET at The Imperial Theatre. Ann has performed in, vocal directed and played violin in the pit for a number of Muni productions. Ann made her Muni debut in 1982 in the chorus of Kismet. She played Widow Corney later that summer in Oliver! She says her favorite role was Miss Hannigan, which she played in the Muni's first production of Annie in 1985. Going full circle, Ann got to play violin in the orchestra for the Muni's production of that show in 2018. Some of the roles that Ann has also played include Vera Charles in Mame in 1988, Ruth in Pirates of Penzance in 1993 and a pirate in Peter Pan in 2001. Want to get involved in this project? Broadway League launches This Is Broadway campaign a historic initiative to welcome theater lovers back to Times Square following the industry's 18-month shut down. The campaign features a short film narrated by Oprah Winfrey, and a new contest called Win all of Broadway where one lucky person will receive four tickets to every show on Broadway. The pro-shot trailer for COME FROM AWAY is here and film will arrive on Apple TV+ on September 10 and a first look at the new off-Broadway musical stage adaptation of Winnie The Pooh headed to Theatre Row on October 21. A New Deal for Broadway from the founders of Black Theatre United includes industry-wide standards and reforms around equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging, with a focus on Black individuals in theatre.  Dear Evan Hansen released the first two tracks from the forthcoming movie musical, Waving Through A Window and You Will Be Found. Casting: Corey Hawkins, who recently played Benny in the In The Heights film has joined The Color Purple Musical film adaptation. Oscar and Grammy winning singer, songwriter, H.E.R has also joined the cast. HER will play Squeak, but no word on who Corey will play. Annie LIVE has found their Annie! Celina Smith, a 12-year-old Atlanta native, who played Young Nala in a touring production of The Lion King will lead the NBC live musical on Thursday, December 8th. She'll be joining a star-studded cast including Harry Connick Jr. as Daddy Warbucks, Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan, Nicole Scherzinger as Grace and Tituss Burgess as Rooster. This week we chat with Matt Young about which of life's lessons can be learned from the classic little-girl musical - Annie!Say what you will about the current version of “Annie,” which is directed with a slightly tremulous hand by James Lapine and features the virtuosic Katie Finneran as the villainous Miss Hannigan, you can’t fault the timing of its return to Broadway…It would seem that Mr. Lapine is hoping to introduce at least a tincture of psychological shading to a show that is only, and unapologetically, a singing comic strip. In its first incarnation “Annie” was an unstoppable sunshine steamroller. This version, which flirts with shadows, moves more shakily…In 1977 Miss Hannigan was portrayed by Dorothy Loudon as a juicy gargoyle, with equal parts Dickensian villainy and showbiz oomph. My guest speaker Actress/Producer Cassandra Raphael She was born in Boston ,Massachusetts while attending the Lords Academy School at the age of 5, she discoverd they were having auditions for Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, she auditioned, and booked the role of Mama Bear. That is where Cassandra caught the acting bug. She then booked a role in every school play, including Miss Hannigan, where the director closed auditions right after she came in, because she booked the role on the spot. At the age of 15 years old she received her first agent, and then began booking commercials, print work, fashion shows and films. Her first film was In Our House where she played the lead and received acclaim for her performance. Cassandra then went on to book the film Karmaloop and Soul Sister. After graduating Northeastern University, she decided to move to Los Angeles where she booked commercials and films such as The Next One, Mick and Jenny, Assassin Behind the Glass, and Director Mark Ridely’s film The Board. Cassandra started the production company, C.Raphael Productions. The company went on to produce Life in LA, The 60 Second Project, A Raisin in the Sun, and currently now producing the feature film A Broken Chain. Meeting in 1953 in J. C. Williamson’s Call Me Madam, Jill and Kevan married in 1959. Their two children Todd and Trudy also followed a career in showbusiness. The family ‘business’ continues with grand-children beginning to make their mark in performance.Between musicals, Jill appeared in a number of Phillip Street Theatre revues, establishing herself as a versatile talent. Musicals continued to be her speciality where she would virtually steal the show, receiving unanimous acclaim from the critics and public alike. Her great break-out performance came in 1966 with Fanny Brice in Funny Girl; a role seemed tailor-made for Perryman’s extensive talents.Through her career she has explored other genres, giving us memorable performances in the plays ‘Night Mother and Brighton Beach Memoirs, an AFI winning performance in the film Maybe This Time and a moving turn as Kate in the mini-series Changi.Kevan continued to perform in musicals playing Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie and on to Pippin, Evita, Chicago and Annie and plays with Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and The One day of the Year. He extended his talents to choreography and put together a number of revues for the Phillip Street Theatre including A Cuppa Tea, A Bex and a Good Lie Down. Kevan spent 15 months as a choreographer and producer for TVW-7 in Perth and was the production co-ordinator for the first Australasian tour of Disney on Parade. He has been a guest artist with The West Australian Ballet Company and for many years was on the staff of the Musical Theatre course at WAAPA.It is a partnership that has inspired performers and audiences, on and off the stage, for several decades.

For folks looking for some respite from Christmas shopping or from becoming participants in the demolition derby that is mall parking, North Bay theatre companies are providing several seasonal entertainments to help keep you in the holiday spirit. Family-friendly musicals are the usual fare and there are several on tap. While not all would be classified as holiday-specific shows, they’ll still get the kids out of the house for a few hours and give adults some welcome relief. Santa Rosa Junior College Theatre Arts (theatrearts.santarosa.edu) is presenting Shrek, the Musical. Burbank Auditorium renovations continue to require them to do their shows “on the road”, so you’ll have to travel to Maria Carrillo High School to see this one. Spreckels Theatre Company (spreckelsonline.com) is doing The Tailor of Gloucester. This original holiday musical, based on the Beatrix Potter story, was originally commissioned and produced by Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater back in 2004 and had several Youth Theatre productions there. Michael Ross directs (mostly) adults in this studio theater production. Sonoma Arts Live (sonomaartslive.org) brings Anne of Green Gables to their Rotary stage. This musical version of the L.M. Montgomery classic is about a spunky redheaded orphan winning over her new family and an entire Canadian island. Speaking of spunky redheaded orphans, 6th Street Playhouse (6thstreetplayhouse.com) assures us the sun’ll come out tomorrow with Annie. It’s Daddy Warbucks versus the evil Miss Hannigan with Annie - and her little dog, too – as the objects of their attention. The 12 Dates of Christmas will run in the 6th Street Studio Theater. It’s a single woman’s ‘holiday survival guide’. For nostalgia fans, Redwood Theatre Company (redwoodtheatrecompany.com) will be presenting It’s a Wonderful Life in the live radio play format. A plucky little girl – this time named Eve – takes center stage at the Cloverdale Performing Arts Center (cloverdaleperformingarts.com) in Yo Ho Ho: A Pirate’s Christmas. Can she rescue Santa and Christmas from the clutches of a gang of directionally-challenged pirates? If she doesn’t, the audience may mutiny. Over in Napa, Lucky Penny Productions (luckypennynapa.com) is presenting Scrooge in Love. This will be only the third fully staged production of this original musical after having been done twice by San Francisco’s 42 Street Moon. It musically answers all the questions you may have about what happened after the end of Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol. Dyan McBride, the show’s original director, heads this production as well. Finally, for those in the mood for a big, splashy music and dance extravaganza, there’s always Transcendence Theatre Company (transcendencetheatre.org) and their Broadway Holiday Spectacular. They’ll be doing three performances at Santa Rosa’s Luther Burbank Center and two performances in Napa at the Lincoln Theatre in Yountville. Lots of entertainment options, and I’m sure the producing companies would like to remind you that theatre tickets make GREAT stocking stuffers. Hey mamas!  How are you doing, if you live in the northeast, it is still summer, your kids are still home.  I saw this great meeem/meme? On Facebook that so sums up how the summer goes with kids.  You start the summer as Mary Poppins and end the summer as Miss Hannigan - lol.  When my kids were little, I would NEVER have felt that way and I may even have even been shocked a mom could feel that way.  Trust me, we all get there lol I do love summer, but it loses its luster by mid August! While I love the spontaneous lazy days of summer. But then I crave the structure of September! I also always end up buying myself new notebooks and pens too! So today's topic may be a tough one.  It is about your kids dad. I will preface this episode by saying, that I know there are real bad guys out there. I know that there are dads that truly do not deserve the title. There are dads that are abusive or toxic for a child's life.  Those guys are not included in this discussion.  This is about the dad that truly loves his kids. The kids truly love him. And in your heart you know you want your kids and their dad to have an amazing relationship, or at least the opportunity to develop one. So, no matter how and why you and your ex-husband ended your marriage, he will always be their dad. This is where it can get so tricky.  You, as YOU, as your own person with a life, feelings and emotions may be having an incredibly difficult time seeing, communicating or frankly being nice to him. I get it. On the flip side, you have these kids, who are already feeling what they are feeling that their parents are no longer together (or will have these feelings once they grasp the change in their lives). They want their daddy around, they want to see him and not have it be something else taken away. You know what I am going to say, it requires you to be stronger than you have ever been in your life.  It will require you to compartmentalize the feelings you have right now about your ex and shift your thoughts and feelings about him as your kids father. It may seem simple, but it is not always easy.  I am going to give you some tips that will help you navigate this minefield of emotions. 1.) The number one tip I want you to embrace and try to implement immediately, is to stop calling him or referring to him as your ex.  Instead call him your kids dad.  This simple almost subtle shift is anything but. But calling him your kids dad, in your head, to others, in front of your kids will have an impact you can't even begin to imagine. Think about it, when you start a sentence with “my ex-husband…..” It is an immediate negative. There is nothing positive in the term ex-husband.  That title immediately puts your brain and heart in self defense or anger mode even if it is subconcious.  It also makes the receiver of that term have emotions of pity, judgement, sadness.  By referring to him as your kids dad, it is an incredibly positive term. It tells your brain over and over again that that is who he is regardless of anything else he may be. It also tells your brain to prioritize that feeling you have about him.  It has an incredibly positive impact on those you are talking to about him.  And most importantly, when your kids hear this, it makes them HAPPY even if that too is subconscious for now. But it matters for the long term. And even though you may not feel it to be possible now, I can tell you 11 years later of constantly referring to my ex-husband and my kids dad that is 100% how I see him, how I feel about him. And I truly care about his happiness and that of his fiancee.  Truly I say that with no ill feelings in my bones.   It is actually so WEIRD to me to call him my ex when I just said it. I truly don't see him that way. I don't even call his mom my ex-mother in law. I call her my kids grandma.  POWERFUL So tip one, refer to him immediately going forward as your kids dad. 2.) Be careful who and what you say about your kids dad to others. This one is a big one and will be much harder than tip #1.  I am not talking about sharing the nitty gritty truths and issues with your best friends.  You have to, but obviously out of any reach of your kids or theirs.  You would be amazed what kids pick up when you think they are absorbed with playing. But don't talk ill or throw shade about your kids dad to people outside that small circle.  I would even say be super careful with family too. Family and parents of your kids friends can be dangerous to share too much about your kids dad. Think about it, just like you will always be around him for the rest of your life (remember birthdays, graduations, weddings, being grandparents together), so will a lot of your family. Do you want your mom, dad, siblings to eye him with anger and hatred at gatherings? Do you want them to slip and say something they shouldn't around your kids? No, not at all.  Same goes for your kids friends' parents.  As a mom of two teenagers, let me tell you the pipeline of rumors and gossip that stems from kids hearing their parents discussions in their homes and then sharing it with their friends.  IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.  You don't want your kid to feel like crap because they heard something about their dad from another kid. The hardest part in all this is when your family or friends go there.  They want to put in a dig or ask you a question about your kids dad that isn't the nicest. This not only happened to me in the beginning, but it still happens 11 years later! It happens even though everyone can see that we all get along very well. It happens about my kids dad, about his fiancee.  I DO NOT GO THERE. I will not feed gossip, I always take the high road.  And to be clear, I am human, I have feelings and I may go to my tight circle to get advice or share something, but I put my kids first at all times in these scenarios. I don't say anything that I wouldn't want them to hear.   I mess up, you will mess up, we are not perfect, but put this guiding principle into practice. 3.) The last tip I am going to share with you is to train your mind to see the goodness in your kids dad in the way he fathers.  If your kids love him so much and he is a great dad and they have fun together, focus on that.  If you keep a journal or a gratitude journal write down 1-2 things per day you are thankful for how he treats your children. This mindset work will pay off big time. As your kids get older they need the uniqueness of you as a mom and he as a dad more and more.  My daughter who is turning 15, needs me in a way right now that her dad can't be there for. Likewise my 13 year old son needs his dad more than ever. Teenage years are no joke. Parenting through them is not easy, and being divorced can add to the complexity. If you work hard now on this mindset work, it will pave the path for the kids to turn to the parent they may need at the moment.  It also helps in monumental ways when you hit an issue or need to set some rules or limits.  For the most part my kids dad and I can get on the same page (after discussion) to make a joint decision on what our 5'10” gorgeous 15 year old daughter can and can't do!   Sometimes we are the counterpoint to the other as we try to advocate for one of the kids on something they want to do.  It is worth it I promise. So to summarize the three tips to implement immediately: 1.) Shift from calling him your ex-husband to your kids dad 2.) Be careful what you say and to whom you say it 3.) Focus on the things that your kids dad does for them that you are thankful for It is the more acceptable belief that you can't have a good relationship with my ex than a better belief that I can be thankful for my kids dad and the coparenting relationship we have I want so much for you for the new belief to be just that.  Our thoughts create our feelings which create our actions.  Shift your thoughts using the tips above and I know your feelings will begin to change. Katie Finneran is featured in the third season of Netflix's critically acclaimed drama, Bloodline. Sibling loyalties are put to the test in this dark, edgy show. Finneran last appeared on Broadway in 2015 It's Only a Play at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre starring Martin Short, Maulik Pancholy, F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Broderick, Stockard Channing, and Micah Stock. In 2012, Katie co-starred on NBC's "The MIchael J. Fox Show" and was called "this season's funniest breakout star" by The Daily Beast. In the fall of 2012, she starred on Broadway as Miss Hannigan in the Tony Nominated revival of "Annie." In 2010, she won a Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance in the Broadway revival of "Promises, Promises." She also was awarded the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award in 2002 for her performance in the Broadway revival of "Noises Off." Katie was raised in Miami, Florida and graduated from New World School of the Arts. Libby Purves meets Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood; brewer Jaega Wise; former hostage Robin Plummer and historian Nick Barratt. Jaega Wise is head brewer at Wild Card Brewery. She founded the company with two friends after leaving Loughborough University where she studied chemical engineering. She was inspired by her aunt who brewed different types of beer and wine. Wild Card Brewery now produces over 4,000 litres of beer a week. Wild Card Brewery, Walthamstow, London E17 9HQ. Dr Nick Barratt runs specialist record teams at The National Archives in Kew and has compiled family histories for a number of subjects featured on the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? In his book, The Forgotten Spy, he turns his attention to his own family history. The book tells the story of his great uncle, Ernest Holloway Oldham, who worked for the Foreign Office during the 1920s and 1930s and sold secrets to the Soviet Union. The Forgotten Spy - The Untold Story Of Stalin's First British Mole by Nick Barratt is published by Blink Publishing. In May 1984 Robin Plummer was an engineer working in Tripoli when he was arrested and imprisoned for nine months. Britain had severed diplomatic relations with Libya in April 1984 after shots fired from the Libyan Embassy killed WPC Yvonne Fletcher. Libya responded by detaining Robin and three other British workers. In his book, A Brush With Madness, Robin writes about coping with captivity including long periods of solitary confinement. Craig Revel Horwood is an actor, theatre director and choreographer who is best known for his role as a judge on the BBC programme Strictly Come Dancing. He is playing Miss Hannigan in a touring production of Annie, The Musical. His theatrical career began in Australia in West Side Story before he moved to Paris where he joined the Lido Du Paris and became principle singer, performing at the Moulin Rouge. His West End theatre credits include Munkustrap in Cats, Miss Saigon and Harry in Crazy for You. Annie opens at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle and is touring the UK. Producer: Paula McGinley.

McArdle was the youngest actress to be nominated for a Tony for best lead actress in a Musical for the role. She's since performed leading roles in Les Miserables, Starlight Express, Beauty & the Beast (Belle), Cabaret (Sally Bowles), and returned to Annie as Miss Hannigan.

"Mamma Mia!"'s newest leading lady, Beth Leavel, talks about slipping into the polyester disco gear of Donna Sheridan, describing the rare opportunity of joining a long-running production and still getting a full rehearsal period, as well as the benefit of coming in with an almost entirely new set of leading actors.
