This week on All the Feelings: Adulting, Pete and Tommy explore the emotional rollercoaster of civic duty—that grown-up responsibility that makes you feel both powerful and powerless, often at the same time. Pete recounts his surprisingly moving journey from accidentally running for office (yes, really) to wielding his democratic paddle in precinct committee meetings that felt like Parks and Rec meets Newhart, with just a dash of intergalactic colonization thrown in for fun.We kick things off with a signature All the Feelings guided meditation, designed to soothe your soul and slowly reveal your complicity in the collapse of public institutions. Then Tommy takes us on a whirlwind tour of his lifelong, unfulfilled dream of serving on a jury—a civic fantasy frequently interrupted by mistrials, celebrity impersonators, and the birth of Occupy Wall Street. It's an episode about participation, paperwork, powerlessness, and the strangely intoxicating scent of a freshly unsealed ballot. And in the end, it's a reminder that real change often starts not in Washington, but in a library basement that smells like Folgers.Become a Feeling Friend!Help us keep the precinct weird: allthefeelings.funGet early access, bonus content, stickers, and the satisfaction of supporting emotional democracy for only $35 a year. (Or just vote Pete back into office. Either works.) ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Visit our website to learn more.

In this week's tribute episode, Janet, John, (and Pen) discuss the life and career of a wonderful American comedian and actor who came to prominence in 1960 and is known for his deadpan delivery style... Bob Newhart. Starting out by engaging in humorous telephone conversations with a friend in which he improvised characters to alleviate boredom at his office job, the actor would go on to receive three Grammys, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe Award. After catching attention from a local DJ he began his career as a stand-up comedian, and transitioned to working in television in the series Newhart after his album of comedic monologues became a bestseller. Known for films like Hell Is for Heroes (1962), Hot Millions (1968), Catch-22 (1970), Cold Turkey (1971), The Rescuers (1977), In & Out (1997), First Family (1980), Elf (2003), and more. From the highbrow to the lowbrow, it's a veritable brow rollercoaster on this week's podcast. First, we go high. Neal Pollack welcomes in Stephen Garrett to discuss Brady Corbet's 'The Brutalist,' the most fun you'll have at a three-and-a-half hour movie about architecture and Holocaust trauma this year. Neither Neal nor Stephen have a cross word about this thoroughgoing work of art, starring, according to Nikki Glazer, "two-time Holocaust survivor" Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce, giving a signature performance as a weird Pennsylvania industrialist. Neal also points out that, in this era of heightened antisemitism, it's nice to see a movie that pays respect to the trauma of Holocaust victims and that treats the founding of the state of Israel as something that was politically good and necessary. It's a great film, with great music, and it includes a 15-minute intermission! Now our brows dip low as Neal welcomes Paula Shaffer to discuss the recent crossover episode between 'Abbott Elementary' and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia,' which surprisingly go together as well as chocolate and peanut butter. Paula and Neal then go down the rabbit hole of TV crossover history. She introduces him to Poobala.com, the rabbit hole of rabbit holes. Did you know that Mr. Carlin from 'The Bob Newhart Show' was also a patient on 'St. Elsewhere?' That's correct. And since St. Elsewhere, we later learned, existed only in the imagination of an autistic middle schooler, that means that The Bob Newhart Show, along with Cheers, Frasier, and hundreds of other shows, also only existed in his imagination. To further tangle the web, it was later revealed that 'Newhart' was just a dream that existed in the world of The Bob Newhart Show. So was Newhart also in Tommy Westphall's imagination? Or was St. Elsewhere part of Bob Newhart's dream life? Are we nothing but a dream ourselves? These are the kinds of questions we try to answer on Book and Film Globe. Enjoy the show!
I'm back and this time I'm exploring shows from 1982 & 1983. Luck you! We'll touch on such classics as Simon & Simon, Newhart, The Incredible Hulk, Cagney & Lacey, Webster, and M*A*S*H. I'll also explore some interesting programs that are forgotten or that I wish were forgotten...shows that involve horny puppets and racism. BTW, that was the name of my band in high school. Horny Puppets and Racism.

Welcome to the The First Ones an Our POoRCHoices podcast. On this series Sarcastro picks a show from yesteryear and then rallies some (or all) of the fellas to join him in recapping just the first episode of said show while dissecting it and determining if it's a show that would fly in today's entertainment landscape. In episode five of The First Ones, Sarcastro is joined by Fatty and Banky to discuss the first episode of Newhart from 1982, starring Bob Newhart playing a do-it-yourself author named Dick Louden who moves from the big city to a quaint Vermont town to restore the historic Stratford Inn with his wife Joanna (played by Mary Frann) and they meet a cast of characters that have a certain charm or lack thereof (yeah, we're talking about the annoying character Kirk Devane). Ringing through with true Bob Newhart comedy and the phone call bit, is it enough to get everyone to watch more episodes of the show? Could it be remade today and if so, who would could fill Bob Newhart's shoes as an out of his element author turned inn keeper? Intro and outro interpreted and performed Sarcastro.
On this episode of Walk in Faith, Craig Syracusa is joined by Director Father Tom Gibbons and Producer Maria Elena Pineda to discuss their latest film, Hollywood Priest, the inspiring story of Father Bud Keiser. Hollywood Priest is an entertaining, provocative and nostalgic, award-winning documentary about a priest who found himself in a different field of ministry: the entertainment industry. The film is narrated by George Newbern (Scandal, Father of the Bride) and features interviews with Hollywood stars: Bob Newhart (Elf, Newhart), Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now), Marion Ross (Happy Days), John Amos (Roots, Good Times), and Tim Matheson (Fletch, Animal House) to name a few. The movie follows Fr. Ellwood “Bud” Kieser, a Paulist priest who arrived in Los Angeles in 1957. In the 1960s and 70s, Fr. Bud was able to evangelize the culture through the national television series Insight, a show that featured the biggest stars in Hollywood. But in 1980, when he encountered famine-stricken Africa through a trip with Catholic Relief Services, his ministry and his life-would take a dramatic turn. The movie does not shy away from the struggles and temptations in Fr. Bud's life, which makes him real and relatable and someone to encourage the people of the Church today to be a missionary at the center of public influence. The nostalgic documentary airs on PBS WORLD this December:Wednesday, December 18 at 7 pm ET | 4 pm PT and 9 pm PTThursday, December 19 at Midnight and 8 am ET | 5 am PTTuesday, December 24 at 5 am ET | 2 am PTWednesday, December 25 at 11 am ET | 8 am PT

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we close out Back to School 2024 week and then we honor a recently departed TV legend. First, it's time for the final entry of Back to School 2024. This time, we're focusing on educational shows. Everybody remembers shows like 3-2-1 Contact, The Electric Company, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. But do you remember some of the 15-minute shows like Wordsmith and Math Wise? If not, we have you covered in this episode about educational shows which generally ran from about 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon from the 1970s through the early 1990s. To see many of the shows mentioned in this episode and more, visit https://libraries.indiana.edu/agency-instructional-technology-ait. Then, Bob Newhart struck gold with The Bob Newhart Show in the 70s and Newhart in the 80s through 1990. Could Newhart do it again with another self-titled endeavor? Bob was a clever and funny show, but it didn't have a certain something that both his previous shows had. Despite quality names as guests including a future Friend, the show was saddled with bad time slots and only lasted a handful of episodes into its second season. Follow us at all our socials via our Linktree page at linktr.ee/itwasathingontv Timestamps 0:52 - 1970s and 1980s 15-minute education shows on PBS 43:20 - Bob

Biden could withdraw from race imminently President Joe Biden is taking calls to step aside as the Democratic presidential candidate seriously and multiple Democratic officials think an exit is a matter of time, reports Reuters. Biden, 81, who recently contracted contracted COVID while campaigning in Las Vegas, has faced increasing pressure from heavyweights in his party to cede his position at the top of the ticket after a shoddy debate performance against former President Donald Trump as well as demonstrable mental acuity issues. Even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York reportedly urged him to drop out of the race, reports ABC News. Describing assassination attempt, Trump said, “God is on my side.” Last night, as former President Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he described Saturday night's assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP: “I heard a loud whizzing sound and felt something hit me really, really hard on my right ear. I said to myself, ‘Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet and moved my right hand to my ear, brought it down. My hand was covered with blood. I immediately knew it was very serious that we were under attack. I proceeded to drop to the ground. “Bullets were continuing to fly as very brave Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and pounced on top of me so that I would be protected. There was blood pouring everywhere and yet, in a certain way, I felt very safe because I had God on my side. (cheers) I felt that. “And the amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at that very last instant, the assassin's bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be here tonight. We would not be together.” Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very ready help in trouble.” Trump opposes illegals invasion Biden has encouraged on southern border Trump described the difference between President Joe Biden, who has allowed the invasion into America at our Southern border, numbering 8-20 million, and the chart which he had referenced in Butler, Pennsylvania which saved his life as he looked toward it and escaped the assassin's bullet meant for his brain. TRUMP: “Less than four years ago, I handed this administration the strongest border in American history. But you can see on the chart that saved my life --that was the chart that saved my life -- I said, ‘Look at it. I'm so proud of it. I think it's one of the greatest. That was was done by the Border Patrol. One of the greatest charts I've ever seen. It showed everything just like that, you know, the chart. “Oh, there it is. That's pretty good. Wow! Last time I put up that chart, I never really got to look at it. (laughter) But without that chart, I would not be here today! (cheers) “I said, ‘You've got to see this chart.' I was so proud of it. And by the time I got to there … I never got to see it that day. But I'm seeing it now. And I was very proud. And if you look at the arrow in the bottom, that's the lowest level, the one on the bottom, heavy red arrow. That's the lowest level of illegal immigrants ever to come into our country in recorded history, right there. That was my last week in office.” Trump: "I will make America affordable again." And Trump vowed to fix America's crippled economy and cast a vision not only for American energy independence again, but American energy dominance. TRUMP: “Starting on Day One, we will drive down prices and make America affordable again. It's not affordable. People can't live like this. Under this administration, groceries are up 57%, gasoline is up 60 and 70%. Mortgage rates have quadrupled. The total household costs have increased an average of $28,000 per family under this administration. “Republicans have a plan to bring down prices and bring them down very, very rapidly. by slashing energy costs. We will in turn reduce the cost of transportation, manufacturing, and all household goods. “And remember, we have more liquid gold under our feet than any other country by far. Under the Trump administration, just three and a half years ago, we were energy independent, but soon we will actually be better than that. We will be energy dominant and supply not only ourselves, but we will supply the rest of the world.” CBS News described Trump's 90-minute speech as the longest convention speech in modern American history. He was 78. After 30 years on the air on CNN, he announced his last broadcast on that cable news network in 2009. DOBBS: “This will be my last broadcast here on CNN where I've worked for the past 30 years. I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN and I'm proud to have had the privilege of helping to build the world's first news network. “Over the past six months, it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, politics, and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN, and to engage in constructive problem solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day.” Dobbs became known for his fight against illegal immigration, his warnings about Islamist terrorism, and his opposition to outsourcing when industrial jobs in the United States were being moved overseas, contributing to the economic and cultural collapse of small, industrial towns. Unlike many of his multi-divorced Hollywood friends, Bob Newhart was married to his bride, Ginnie, for 60 years. In fact, on an awards show, Newhart shared this story about his wife to whom he had then been married for 40 years. NEWHART: “I have to thank my wife of 40 years. She has kept me grounded. She never lets me get too full of myself. “We have in California -- on Wednesdays, they pick up the garbage and you have to recycle it, you know, take plastic and the paper and that all goes in one, one place. “And very often late Tuesday, my wife will say to me, ‘Honey, would you take out the recycling? They're picking it up tomorrow and you got to separate it.' I will say to her, ‘Do you think Joanne Woodward asked, asked Paul Newman to recycle the, the cans and the plastic?' And she said, ‘If you were Paul Newman, I wouldn't ask you to do it.'” Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, July 19th, in the year of our Lord 2024.
