06/09/26 Hour 1: Illinois Football lands 3-Star Quarterback Sladen Shack - what you need to know; Cardinals vs Mets and Cubs vs Rockies Preview Illinois football added another piece to its future quarterback room as three-star 2027 signal caller Sladen Shack from Brandon, Mississippi announced his commitment to Bret Bielema and the Illini. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound quarterback chose Illinois over offers from Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, UConn, South Florida, East Carolina and others. Shack is rated as one of Mississippi's top prospects in the Class of 2027 and becomes Illinois' quarterback commitment for the cycle after the staff reset its recruiting board this spring. Illinois coaches Art Sitkowski and Barry Lunney Jr. prioritized Shack following strong evaluations and an official visit to Champaign. The commitment continues Illinois' recent pipeline into Mississippi, following the success of former Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer.  Then we shift to baseball as the Cardinals open a three-game series against the Mets at Citi Field. St. Louis enters the matchup at 35-28 and currently holds the top National League Wild Card position, while New York sits at 29-36 but comes home with momentum after winning series against both San Diego and Seattle. Young stars Jordan Walker and JJ Wetherholt continue to fuel the Cardinals' surprising season, while the Mets welcome catcher Francisco Alvarez back from the injured list ahead of the series opener. The matchup features two teams trying to strengthen their playoff positioning in a crowded National League race. Meanwhile, the Cubs begin a six-game season series with the Rockies at Coors Field. Chicago enters the series looking to gain ground after an inconsistent stretch, while Colorado continues rebuilding after a difficult 2025 campaign. The probable pitching matchups feature Colin Rea vs. Tomoyuki Sugano, Shota Imanaga vs. Michael Lorenzen, and Edward Cabrera vs. Ryan Feltner. Despite Colorado's struggles, Coors Field has historically been a difficult place for the Cubs, making this an important road test as they try to stay in the National League playoff picture.

Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! In a frustrating shutdown affair at Busch Stadium, the Cincinnati Reds suffered a 3-0 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, September 16, 2025, dimming their fading playoff aspirations. The loss marked the Reds' fourth in five games, dropping them three games behind the New York Mets for the final National League Wild Card spot with just 12 contests left in the regular season. Cincinnati's offense, once a high-octane force, went ice-cold, managing only three hits against a stingy Cardinals staff. Rookie right-hander Michael McGreevy dominated for St. Louis, delivering seven sharp innings with just three hits, three walks, and six strikeouts on 91 pitches. His poise silenced the Reds' bats, setting the stage for Thomas Saggese's pivotal two-run homer in the third inning that provided all the offense the home team needed. Relievers closed out the three-hitter, with Riley O'Brien notching his fifth save in a crisp 1-2-3 ninth. On the mound, Reds starter Andrew Abbott struggled through 4 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits while fanning seven. The defeat underscored Cincinnati's mounting inconsistencies—stranded runners and untimely errors plagued a lineup desperate for momentum after Monday's dramatic 11-6 comeback win. Manager David Bell lamented the missed opportunities, noting, "We couldn't string anything together tonight. Credit to their pitcher, but we've got to find our fight." Shifting gears to the gridiron, the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals (2-0) face a pivotal road test against the Minnesota Vikings (1-1) on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET on CBS, with Minnesota favored by 3.5 points and a total of 42 points. Cincinnati enters hot off a gritty 31-27 thriller over Jacksonville, where backup QB Jake Browning stepped up amid Joe Burrow's indefinite injury absence. Browning's poise—highlighted by clutch late-game heroics—fuels optimism, but the Bengals' secondary talent, like Ja'Marr Chase, will clash with Minnesota's star Justin Jefferson. Running back Chase Brown (47 yards last outing) must exploit a Vikings rush defense that allowed 139 yards against Jacksonville. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap). Entering the weekend series versus the Mets on Thursday, the Braves were in a situation where winning the series could have caused some very necessary breathing room for them in the National League Wild Card standings. Thursday and Friday night's games went quite the opposite of expectation however. Chris Sale threw an absolute gem Thursday night, allowing only two hits (one was a two-run homerun) and 2 earned runs. The Braves lost that game. Friday night was much worse, as Charlie Morton only makes it through two and a third innings while giving up three homeruns, something that Morton seems to be doing a lot this season. Throw in a few defensive miscues, and the Braves lose arguably their worst loss of the season. At this point, the Braves have given away the lead that they had in the wild card standings, and the season is looking like the injuries that they have suffered may just be too much to bare. Turn the page to Saturday. Rookie Spencer Schwellenbach is tasked with taking on the Mets and trying to stop the bleeding. Schwellenbach did not disappoint. Scwellenbach went seven innings, while giving up zero earned runs and striking out ELEVEN Mets. This was the shot in the arm that the Braves may have needed, especially after the result of Sunday's game. Sunday was not a loss, in fact, the Braves offense came alive to the tune of four homeruns in a nine to two victory for the Braves. The unfortunate part of Sunday's game, is that All-Star starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez left the game after only pitching three innings with forearm tightness. We are still awaiting results from an MRI for Lopez, but it was widely assumed that he may not be able to effectively  make it through an entire season after not being a starter for five years. To compete in a five or seven game series, you can get by with a three-man rotation as long as they pitch well, with help from an an effective bullpen, which is something that the Braves have had all season. Chris Sale is having a Cy-Young caliber season. Max Fried, while currently on the IL, is also pitching great, and joined Lopez and Sale as 2024 All-Stars. But while having three pitchers to go in the playoffs is enough, it is a much better scenario to have four. While we have seen Charlie Morton pitch is some extremely clutch situations in the past, I'm just not sure that is who he is anymore, especially after not being available last year in the playoffs with a finger ailment. Enter Spencer Scwellenbach. Scwellenbach has pitched well for the Braves this season, and maybe has earned his spot in a three-man Braves playoff rotation, but would be in a much better situation as the fourth. This season is far from over, and with the trade deadline nearing, it has become very clear of what the Braves need to be hunting: starting pitching, and not just anyone, the Braves need to go get an elite starter. Spencer Scwellenbach could just be the glimmer of hope that the Braves need to go out there and make a move to propel them in to a long playoff run. Randy McMichael and Abe Gordon discuss the upcoming trade deadline and what the Braves need to do moving forward.

The Atlanta Braves have found recent success at the plate, leading to a four-game winning streak that was snapped Wednesday night in Arizona versus the Diamondbacks. Even in defeat, the Braves still scored five runs behind a two-run homerun by Marcell Ozuna that tied it in the eighth inning. But yesterday saw something that this Braves team does not see very often: a bad outing by the bullpen. In baseball, bad outings happen, and it s not really a cause for concern for the Braves immediate success, but what about the playoffs? It is assumed that the Braves will finish the season no worse than competing for the National League Wild Card, but they may need to add an arm or two to solidify a postseason run. If the season ended now, the playoff rotation would likely consist of Chris Sale, Max Fried, and Reynaldo Lopez, which does not sound like a bad situation with two of those players being named to the All-Star Team this season. But do we really know who Reynaldo Lopez is? Sure, he is having an All-Star caliber first half, but so was Bryce Elder last year, and we all know how that has turned out. He could remain consistent and great, but what if he wears down? It has been years since Lopez has shouldered a load this large. Would that then mean that Charlie Morton would be that third starter? Last year, a blister popped up at playoff time, and you have to cross your fingers every time that Charlie goes out that the curveball is curving. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael discuss the Braves' recent successes, as well as opportunities to make the team better.

Is Cole Hamels a Hall of Famer? Padres' Playoff Chances, Best Minor League Stories with Tim Hagerty

Tim Hagerty has been the play-by-play voice for the El Paso Chihuahuas, the San Diego Padres' Triple-A affiliate team, since their inaugural season in 2014. He has been calling Triple-A games for the Padres since 2008. Tim visits the Jack Vita Show to discuss the Padres' struggles in 2023, the National League Wild Card race, the Hall of Fame candidacy of recently retired Cole Hamels (who signed a minor league contract with the Padres in February), his new book, what makes minor league baseball special, and the greatest minor league baseball stories, many of which very few people know about.   First things first, Jack welcomes Tim to the show to dissect the National League Wild Card race and discuss the chances of the Padres turning it around and sneaking into the playoffs in the final weeks of the season. At the time of recording, the Padres are 60-66, 5.5 games back of the third National League Wild Card, currently owned by the San Francisco Giants. The Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins and Padres are all in the hunt for the three NL Wild Cards.   Cole Hamels inked a minor league contract with the Padres in February. He had hoped to pitch at Triple-A El Paso, before returning to the big leagues this summer. Hamels was unable to complete his comeback attempt. Dealing with pain and undisclosed injuries, Hamels remained in Peoria, Arizona at the Padres' spring training complex, until he announced his retirement earlier this month. Hamels is a World Series MVP, a World Series champion and a four-time All-Star. Is he a Hall of Famer? Tim and Jack examine his Hall of Fame case and compare it to that of other pitchers from his era.   Later on, Tim shares some of the greatest stories from minor league baseball. How about the time that a player once got traded for a plate of beans? Or the time that a wild bull ran out onto the field? Wouldn't you like to hear about the 200-mile home run? Tim recently released a book, Tales from the Dugout: 1,001 Humorous, Inspirational and Wild Anecdotes from Minor League Baseball. Tim gives us a little taste of the crazy stories you can read about in his book, in a fun episode of the Jack Vita Show!
