In this episode, we break the cycle of societal pressures with Representative Michele Rayner. They get political about their journey into government, family legacies, and their call to action to be better than the previous generations. This is a powerful talk with a powerful voice. So get ready to cast your vote for Michelle. Listen to Today's Episode to Learn About: -Michele's journey to being in government -family legacies and wanting to do better than the previous generation -being a woman in a man's world -the biggest hurdle for women seeking leadership positions in our government -being gaslit in government -the two sides of the support coin -policy and politics is personal -expecting people to be the way you want -attributes for a successful leader -in what ways do our state and country need to change -honesty is the best policy -questions from listeners SYNC UP WITH MICHELE: INSTAGRAM- @micheleforfl + @repmkr WHO IS MICHELE? Civil rights and social justice attorney Michele Rayner made history in 2020 when she was elected as the first openly queer Black member of the Florida legislature and immediately established herself as one of the strongest advocates for underserved communities.Michele was raised by a family of change-makers in Pinellas County. Her parents both integrated the University of South Florida in the early 1960s, with her mother going on to become one of the first Black social workers in St. Petersburg and her father successfully putting himself through engineering school while working in a warehouse. Her parents established themselves as community leaders and set an example for Michele with their dedication to service. After law school, Michele joined the Hillsborough County Public Defender's office, a position she was drawn to because she felt it was where she could do the best for the most vulnerable in her community. While serving as a public defender, she learned the importance of truly listening to and steadfastly advocating for clients who have limited agency. Michele was called to ensure justice again when she became an attorney for Markeis McGlockton's family, working alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump. Markeis was shot and killed in an altercation in a Clearwater parking lot, reigniting the debate over Florida's controversial “Stand Your Ground” law 6 years after the death of Trayvon Martin. During the 2019 trial, the killer was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The experience made it clear to Michele that running for the legislature could help her do more to fight unjust laws like Stand Your Ground and prevent future tragedies from occurring. Growing up, Michele's father always told her: “Help others, do the right thing and most of all, always keep your head up high.” To this day, Michele keeps her head up and will continue to do so as a leader for her constituents, ensuring an equitable recovery from COVID, protecting voting rights, and demanding real justice for underserved communities. Michele currently lives in St. Petersburg with her dog and cat.

Ryan and Felix discuss Michael Drejka being sentenced to 20 years in prison over the Clearwater parking lot shooting death of Markeis McGlockton.
In this week’s episode, the Bruthas are joined by none other than attorney extraordinaire Michele K. Rayner-Goolsby to talk about an important victory for black folks everywhere — the manslaughter conviction for the shooting of Markeis McGlockton in a convenience store parking lot last July. Originally, the local sheriff refused to arrest or charge the shooter due to Florida’s notorious stand your ground law. However, the sheriff didn’t know about the skill and determination of Sista Rayner-Goolsby, who was retained by McGlockton’s parents and marshaled the community to insist that the shooter be arrested, charged and just last week, convicted for killing McGlockton. In our conversation, we learn Michele’s “origin story” — how she became one of today’s leading civil rights attorneys. She was also good enough to share with us her yearlong sojourn for justice for Markeis McGlockton. And finally, she provides us some insights on how to run the long distance race for equality. And, to top it all off, Michele is kind enough to share her Democratic “Final Four” for 2020 and join the bruthas for our weekly review of the week in blackness. We discussed Popeye’s chicken sandwich mania, the Michigan city council candidate running on the platform of keeping her town all white, and the controversy surrounding the Oklahoma City newswoman who said her co-anchor looked like the gorilla in their local zoo.

These are the Tampa Bay state elected officials who decided it wasn't worth their time to have a special session on stand your ground after the murder of Markeis McGlockton. Dana Young, Tom Lee, Jeff Brandes, Bill Galvano, Blaise Ingoglia, J.W. (Or James or Jamie or Jimbo) Grant, Chris Sprowls, Larry Ahern (happened in his district), Danny Burgess, Richard Corcoran, Chris Latvala, Amber Mariano, Kathtleen Peters, Jake Raburn, Ross Spano, Jackie Toledo, Lawrence McClure. This does nothing to tell you about the actual content of this episode, but it is probably the most important information for you to know, in our humble hog opinoins. Brian was there, too.
The average human male head is somewhere around 55 centimeters. We found it on the internet. Dave says Matt's bigger. He has no hard data to back this up. But most of the show doesn't so whatever. Matt Gaetz wants the firing squad to come back and wants you to know about his Borat impression and have you seen "Scarface"? Man that movie is like...my life man. Also Dana Young is a NRA and corporate shill who cares more about getting rid of taxes on commercial leasing (something we can all relate to, am I right?) then she does about the environment. Currently she is pretending she cares about dog and human lives. But to be clear, she doesn't at least in any meaningful way. She voted against a special session to reexamine Stand Your Ground after Markeis McGlockton was murdered. Not very fun actually when you thing about it. But she is related to a member of the Pork Chop Gang, so have some mercy. Intro- Florida Boy by Rick Ross Outro- Wolves at the Door by David Bazan
Mike Sisino: The Contiuum of Force - Make Good Decisions! David and Mark are rejoined by Mike Sisino to talk about the Continuum of Force and, specifically, about making good decisions during a self-defense scenario all the way up to the point of having to pull the trigger on your gun. As a backdrop to this conversation we also discuss the July 19, 2018 shooting in Clearwater, Florida of Markeis McGlockton by gunman Michael Drejka. About Mike Sisino Mike was with us on Episodes Six and Seven where we talked about the practicality of the AR-15 for civilian defensive purposes. Mike is 31-year veteran of Law Enforcement as a State Policeman where he also worked as a SWAT officer. Mike was also the Lead Firearms Instructor at his state’s State Police Academy for a period of time. And something which is extremely relevant to this episode, Mike served on his state’s Use of Force Committee which oversaw all training concerning the use of force, firearms training, and instructor certification. The Kings return like a cold sore on Florida political news. John and Dave wade through the blue-green ballroom dance of Florida politicians, capitalists and bipartisanship in the chambers of the Fanjul mansions and US Sugar hunting lodges. Jeff Greene isn't voting for Ron Howard. 39,000 people don't get Medicaid so Rick Scott can spend 100 million big ones on urinal cakes that say "Visit Florida". Jobs are up, but the ability to receive medical care isn't. Dana Young and every single Republican state legislator from the Tampa Bay area with the exception of Shawn Harrison decline a special session to repeal Stand Your Ground after the murder of Markeis McGlockton. Also, surprise, the arrest warrant for Michael Drejka states exactly what was reported in the press days after the murder. This is a media empire founded on anal bleaching. Thank you.
Michael Drejka, 47, has been charged with the July 19 death of Markeis McGlockton outside a Clearwater convenience store, Pinellas County State Attorney Bernie McCabe said. Drejka was being held at the county jail on $100,000 bail. It is unknown if he has an attorney. This podcast is a follow up discussion on the topic since charges have been filed. Don and Shawn discuss the case, and also introduce Mike Darter, co-founder and CEO of CCW Safe.

The recent shooting death of Markeis McGlockton in Clearwater, Florida, reignited the Stand Your Ground law debate at the national level. The attorney for Trayvon Martin's family, Benjamin Crump, became an attorney for McGlockton's partner, Britany Jacobs. Crump discussed the Martin and McGlockton shootings as if they were similar, when they are factually dissimilar, and this has led to an incorrect understanding of Stand Your Ground laws and what transpired in Martin's shooting death. Listen to learn the facts about this law and the two shootings.
Paul Manafort declines to testify, and his defense rests after calling no witnesses on day 11 of his trial. Closing arguments in the case begin tomorrow. Manafort faces over 300 years in prison on tax fraud charges; nine charges of bank fraud and bank fraud conspiracy, which each carry a maximum sentence of 30 years; and 15 to 20 years if convicted of conspiracy charges and foreign lobbying violations.Michael Drejka, 47, has been charged in the July 19 death of Markeis McGlockton outside a Clearwater convenience store in Pinellas County, Florida. Drejka shot and killed McGlockton, but Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri declined to charge Drejka, saying one day after the shooting that Drejka was protected by Florida's stand-your-ground law. The sheriff passed the case to prosecutors for a final decision. Now Pinellas County State Attorney Bernie McCabe has charged Drejka with manslaughter. In court documents, McCabe and Pinellas sheriff's Detective George Moffett cited three other drivers who said Drejka threatened them during confrontations that preceded his run-in with McGlockton. Two of them said he displayed a gun.Over the past few weeks, US President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey have been embroiled in a pretty fierce back-and-forth. Over the weekend, the US imposed sanctions against Turkey for continuing to hold the American pastor Andrew Brunson on espionage charges in Turkey. Trump doubled sanctions on Turkish steel and aluminum as officials complained that Turkey's move to shift Brunson from prison to house arrest had failed to meet Washington's demand for his full release and return to the US. Pork Chop Kings, High-T Dave and Low-T John, recap the final Democratic Debate in the race for Florida's Governorship. Will they be seduced by the bland centrist delusions of Gwen Graham and Philip Levine or Andrew Gillum's tepid brand of hush-hush Democratic Socialism that somehow doesn't include an endorsement of Medicare for All or any concrete affordable housing policies? Perhaps there is a third way... the High-E maverick snake-handler from Orlando known as Chris King, John sure seems to think so, but he has been charmed by men pretending to be pastors before. This week we discuss Stand Your Ground laws. Markeis McGlockton (a black man) was murdered by Michael Drejka (a white man) in a convenience store parking lot over a parking dispute. Markeis' girlfriend Brittany Jacobs and their children were waiting in their car, parked in a handicapped parking spot when Drejkas approached them. Drejka started harassing Brittany. The commotion caught Markeis' attention, who came to Brittany's defense by shoving Drejka who appeared to be a threat to his family. After being shoved to the ground Drejka pulled out a gun and shot Markeis in his chest. Markeis was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Department refused to arrest Michael Drejka because of Florida's lax Stand Your Ground laws. (0:00) BTS: If Dan were a person of power (scary). (1:22) Introduction. Sorry for the wait… We are dropping this one a couple hours late because Aldo, Rog, and Los recorded in three different cities this week and the logistics were a bit off. Rumble got us started with the concept of pimpin’ for life (01:00) prior to getting into the main topic of the week, which was gauging the line of when you go too far. We broke down two big stories revolving around what is socially acceptable to laugh at (06:00) and they were: a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity wearing an offensive shirt celebrating Bill Cosby and whether it is okay to advertise the villain (09:00) and 50 Cent’s unrelenting social media barbs at Floyd Mayweather and when it is okay to make jokes involving the dead (28:00). R.Kelly’s new 19-minute song got us admitting how we truly feel about the Pied Piper of R&B and his antics (38:00). We too a turn for the serious to pay homage to our slain brother, Markeis McGlockton, in Florida and discuss how the Stand Your Ground Law is getting us killed everyday (48:00). The podcast touched on a bit of sports talk when we ran down the recent social media spat between Kevin Durant and CJ McCollum (59:00) before wrapping with Aldo having Nothin’ NICE to Say about Facebook birthday donations (1:09:00).
