This is a special bonus episode as we say goodbye to our incredible friend and co creator of the show Danny Canete #8834. I wanted Danny, and the listeners to get to hear what some of the many people said about getting to work with Danny and share this wild life and career at Dallas PD. I am a big believer in that your reputation isn't what you think of yourself but what others think of you and how you impacted their life. There are so many stories, so many laughs, tears, and incredible moments that make up a twenty year career. Love you buddy, take care of yourself and that beautiful family. Below is just one of the many unique stories and inside peeks inside Danny's family and life. Dan Canete was born and raised in the Philippines. Dan had lived on the island of Leyte during WWII. He had experienced Japanese Zeros and guerrilla warfare in the jungles and MacArthur landing on the island. He married Evelyn Senit and had a son, Allen. He immigrated (legally) from the Philippines to the US with their four year old son, Allen, in 1963. Four years later their daughter Lisa was born. They lived on both coasts pursuing advanced education for Dan. He earned his doctorate in psychology and became a college professor. Later in life he liked to be called "Doc Dan". Along many other talents he was a musician. He loved the USA and all it gave to him and his family. In their retired years they finally settled in Corpus Christi, Texas where a strong community of Filipino families lived and churched Allen married Kim. Their first child was a son. They named him after both his grandfathers, Daniel James. He has always been known as Danny. Danny's grandmother, Evelyn, died in 2019. His grandfather, Daniel, called Lolo by his family, decided to remain in his home in Corpus Christi. In 2020 the US suffered not only the onslaught of Covid but also the George Floyd riots. As a Senior Corporal with Dallas SWAT, Danny and his team had been running for days and weeks through the city of Dallas protecting the city from the riots. On June 14 Lolo called the ambulance because he was not feeling well. He died of Covid June 17. As soon as he learned his father was sick Allen had booked flights and was headed to Texas from South Dakota. Lolo died before he could get there. Allen continued down to Corpus Christi to take care of immediate needs. He spent Father's Day writing his dad's obituary. On July 25, 2020 Hurricane Hanna (Danny's daughter is named Hannah) swept through Corpus Christi. Allen and Kim had driven down to Dallas. Allen's sister, Lisa, and her life partner, Scott, had left their Manhattan apartment for the first time since Covid hit and flew into Dallas. In Dallas Danny joined his mom and dad and aunt and uncle. They all drove down to Corpus Christi on July 26 to close up and put Lolo's house up for sale. They drove through a torrential rainstorm. Once in Corpus Christi they all checked into a hotel then they all piled into one car and headed over to Lolo's house. Allen had gotten into the house in June. But, they were unsure if the garage could be opened. As Allen and Scott messed with the garage door Danny jumped out of the car and walked up to the front. Kim thought he was going to try the front door. But, no. Lolo had a tall flagpole where he had displayed his American flag. The flag was in a wet heap on the ground. Danny went over to pick it up. So much came together in that moment. The immigrant grandfather, so patriotic, and so very proud of his grandson, dies of Covid. The namesake grandson stepping back from policing riots of people spewing hate for the USA to say good-bye and give his grandfather and his country the respect they deserved.

EPISODE 706 - John Schachnovsky - Beyond The Badge - CRIME, JUSTICE, AND THE FBI IN THAILANDAbout the authorJohn Schachnovsky is the former head of FBI operations in Thailand. He spent 25 years as a law enforcement officer, motivating and managing diverse teams in demanding environments. Book: Beyond the Badge: Crime, Justice, and the FBI in ThailandWelcome to Thailand: there's no room for error, and the stakes are high.As an FBI Agent stationed in Bangkok, John Schachnovsky must build trust, goodwill, and long-term relationships with his Thai counterparts. Beyond the Badge explores how those relationships lead to the capture of dangerous criminals, transcending borders. From high-profile incidents like the shocking death of David Carradine to handling overseas terrorism, from the extradition of a suspect in the murder of a United States Marine to apprehending a notorious kidnapper with an Interpol Red Notice, experience true international crime investigations as never before: behind the scenes and firsthand.Follow former Special Agent Schachnovsky as he takes on Irish mobsters, parental kidnappers, child abusers, cyber criminals, and murderers. More than a collection of riveting tales of intrigue, Beyond the Badge is a window into FBI foreign partnerships—a critical reminder of the importance of international cooperation in the fight against crime. In this episode, we sit down with John Schachnovsky, a retired FBI agent joining us from Bangkok, Thailand, where he has lived for nearly two decades. John reflects on a remarkable career that began far from the world of federal law enforcement. Once a laid back college hockey player, he had no clear path until his father encouraged him to consider a job that did not involve sitting behind a desk. That advice led him first to the U.S. Border Patrol, an experience he says transformed him from an unfocused student into a disciplined professional through a demanding and highly militaristic environment. From there, John joined the FBI and trained at Quantico. He explains how different it felt: less about breaking you down and more about shaping you into an agent they have already vetted carefully through rigorous applications and background checks. He shares a fascinating look into Hogan's Alley, the FBI's simulated town used to test practical skills from search warrants to interviews. According to John, this unique training gives new agents a level of confidence before facing real world situations, though nothing can fully prepare you for the first arrest outside controlled conditions. After several years in San Francisco, John pursued a dream assignment overseas and eventually became the FBI's legal attache in Thailand. He describes the overlooked role the FBI plays internationally, assisting American cases that extend abroad, opening extraterritorial cases related to terrorism and child sex trafficking, supporting foreign partners with U.S. based investigations, and providing specialized training to enhance global cooperation. He highlights how diplomacy, trust building, and cultural fluency are just as crucial as investigative skills, especially in a country where FBI agents have no arrest authority and rely entirely on local police.Send us Fan MailSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

What happens when wedding planners invest in their education? Co-host Krisy Thomas, Vice President of the CWP Society, interviews three award winning, Master Certified Wedding Planners and Industry Advancement Directors, who reveal the transformative power of professional certification in this candid conversation that goes far beyond basic credentials. For Brianne Ackerland, certification turned a hobby into a thriving business after she sought education to balance motherhood with entrepreneurship. Now ten plus years into her journey, she continues finding value in ongoing education: "I'm still learning new things, and that's one of the huge things I value about what the group has to offer."Nicole Martinez brought years of experience to her certification journey but discovered unexpected benefits. "It changed how I viewed myself," she reveals, explaining how validation from peers and structured workflows revolutionized her business approach. Her powerful insight about confidence resonates with planners at all experience levels. For newer planner Brittney Poole, certification provided critical pricing guidance and client targeting strategies. "I am super confident that I'm charging at the level I need to be," she shares, detailing how education helped her find work-life balance while raising two young children.Perhaps most remarkable is how these competitors-turned-collaborators exemplify the community-over-competition ethos. "We don't consider ourselves competition," Poole explains about her relationship with fellow Virginia planner Martinez. "We both serve a different clientele and know what works individually for our businesses."Looking to transform your wedding planning career? Tactical Living

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2025 10:34

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton discuss a critical topic for first responders: finding your identity beyond the badge (Amazon Affiliate). The high demands of the job often leave little room for self-reflection or personal growth outside of work, which can lead to stress, burnout, and a lack of balance. Hobbies offer an incredible opportunity to reconnect with yourself, relieve stress, and build a life that isn't solely defined by your role as a first responder. You'll learn why hobbies are essential for maintaining balance and how they can positively impact your mental and emotional health. We'll share practical examples of hobbies that fit the unique lifestyle of first responders and explore how they can provide a much-needed outlet. Why Hobbies Are Essential for First Responders: Explore how having interests outside of work can help reduce stress, improve overall well-being, and create a sense of fulfillment beyond your career. Examples of Hobbies That Provide Stress Relief and Confidence: 1. Outdoor Activities: Example: Hiking, fishing, or camping on your days off to reconnect with nature and unwind. How It Helps: Provides a calming escape from the fast pace of the job and allows you to reset mentally. 2. Creative Pursuits: Example: Painting, woodworking, or photography as a way to express yourself and channel emotions. How It Helps: Encourages self-expression and can be a therapeutic outlet for processing stress. 3. Physical Fitness Beyond Work Requirements: Example: Joining a martial arts class or training for a marathon as a personal challenge. How It Helps: Builds confidence, enhances physical health, and offers a structured goal to focus on. 4. Volunteering or Community Engagement: Example: Coaching a local sports team or mentoring youth in your community. How It Helps: Fosters connection and gives you a sense of purpose outside of your professional role. 5. Learning New Skills: Example: Taking up cooking, learning a musical instrument, or trying your hand at gardening. How It Helps: Expands your abilities and offers a rewarding sense of accomplishment. How to Find the Right Hobby for You: Tips for identifying interests that align with your personality, schedule, and lifestyle as a first responder. How Hobbies Strengthen Mental and Emotional Health: Discover how dedicating time to something you love can reduce the mental toll of the job and foster a healthier mindset. Balancing Hobbies with a Demanding Schedule: Learn strategies to make time for hobbies even when your work hours are irregular or unpredictable. Why This Matters: As a first responder, your job is an important part of your life, but it doesn't define your entire identity. Hobbies can provide the balance and joy you need to thrive both personally and professionally. By finding something that sparks your passion, you'll improve your mental health, build confidence, and discover a deeper sense of self outside the uniform. In today's episode, I want to talk about what it looks like ‘beyond the badge', and embracing seasons in a world obsessed with busy. For me, I wore ‘busy' like a badge of honor. I wanted to achieve every milestone, achievement, and check allll the boxes. Busy became my default answer, because when we're busy, that means we're successful..right?Over the last couple of years, I've really leaned into the concept of ‘wintering'. While we seem to be adding more and more to our calendar, Nature is instead telling us to be still, turn inward, and do less. Whether we're experiencing pregnancy, trying to navigate postpartum, transitioning our career, or some other kind of major life change, it's VITAL that we slow down, and honor the season we're in.I want to encourage you to honor your natural energy, and be present with what's right in front of you. When you're able to know, love, and trust yourself just as you are, you'll be able to come home to yourself, and truly thrive, regardless of the season you're in.In this episode, I cover:Turning to the ‘cyclical' nature of the world and honoring the season you're inMy story of wearing ‘busy' like a badge of honor + how I've actively worked to change that over timeMy journey through burnout + the unexpected blessings this led toChoosing to truly slow down during life's seasons + learning the art of ‘simplify to amplify'Finding alignment in the life you want to create + focusing on being present, and coming home to yourselfBe sure to hit subscribe so you never miss the latest episode!Connect with Emily:Follow on Instagram and FacebookJoin my email listCheck out my websiteConnect with on LinkedInResources & Links:Gather in Growth Sponsorship InquiryBook me as a speaker for your next eventGather in Growth podcast produced by: Jill Carr PodcastingMentioned in this episode:Book me as a keynote speaker, workshop host, or emcee for your next event! In this heartfelt episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, we reflect on the tragic events of January 6th, 2021, through the lens of a poignant story about Ashli Babbitt, whose life was lost that day. The emotional aftermath of her passing was felt deeply, not just by her human loved ones but by her 7-year-old dog, a loyal companion who succumbed to depression shortly after her ashes were spread. This story, highlighted in a recent documentary featuring Ashli's husband, serves as a powerful reminder of the profound bond between humans and their pets.   Check out Capital Punishment here. As first responders, the concept of loyalty, sacrifice, and unwavering companionship resonate on both professional and personal levels. This episode delves into the vital role pets play in the lives of those who serve. We discuss how nurturing and respecting the relationship with our pets is not just a responsibility but a therapeutic necessity, especially in professions laden with stress and trauma. The benefits of pet ownership for mental health and well-being are well-documented, offering comfort, reducing stress, and providing unconditional love. For first responders, coming home to a wagging tail or a purring companion can be a critical factor in decompressing after a day's duty. We explore stories and studies that underscore the therapeutic effects of pets, and how they serve as silent healers, helping to alleviate the burden of the tough realities faced in the line of duty. This episode pays tribute to the unspoken heroes in our homes - our pets. It encourages us to acknowledge and cherish the unique and healing relationship we share with them. As we serve our communities, let's not forget the furry, four-legged companions serving us in silence, offering comfort and respite from the world's chaos. Tune in to discover how these relationships can be nurtured for mutual well-being and support.   capitalpunishment #ashlibabbitt #dogsareourbestfriend #dogs #loyalty #mentalhealth #supportdog   ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/   CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC   CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r   Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/   Like what you hear? I commend Glen Williams for opening up wounds in his personal life to educate us about the PTSD suffered by first responders. Perhaps we should start thanking them for their service as we do military veterans. I became aware of PTSD after my embedded reporter assignment with the lead Army unit during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. And all of the men in my family were World War II veterans, and none of them would discuss the war.  Looking back, I recognize signs of PTSD they suffered many years later.  I believe the prescription is to open up, start talking, and seek professional help. Now, that's easier said than done. Many young men,  including yours truly, were taught that showing feelings was a sign of weakness.  With the help of strong women in our family, we are trying to change that in future generations. E692 Beyond the Badge: Rediscovering Identity Outside of Your Spouse's Profession

In today's riveting episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, Coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton confront a trending phenomenon on social media: The rising portrayal of women, specifically police wives, who primarily identify themselves through their husband's profession. I am all about supporting your spouse's profession. But is wrapping your identity around your spouse's job healthy? Or is there a deeper underlying issue that needs introspection?   It's not uncommon to stumble upon posts captioned, "When you're a police wife and your detective husband gets called in for the night..." or "Dealing with badge bunnies on your husband's profile again #PoliceWifeProblems". While it's essential to support and appreciate the sacrifices made by our law enforcement families, a question arises: Should one's primary identity be anchored to their partner's profession?   Several reasons make this trend concerning:   Lack of Individual Identity: Continuously aligning oneself with a spouse's job can blur the lines of personal identity, reducing one's self-worth and self-esteem.   Increased Vulnerability: Sharing intimate aspects of being a "police wife" publicly can unintentionally expose personal vulnerabilities or even safety risks.   Unhealthy Obsessions: Keeping tabs on every comment or like on a spouse's profile might lead to unwarranted tensions, jealousy, and relationship strains.   To nurture a balanced and wholesome self-image:   Diversify Identity Sources: Engage in personal hobbies, career pursuits, or activities that define you outside your spouse's job.   Seek Personal Achievements: Celebrate personal milestones that are separate from your partner's accomplishments.   Communicate: If insecurities arise, address them openly with your partner to strengthen trust and understanding.   In this episode, Coach Ashlie and Detective Walton delve deep, emphasizing the importance of self-worth, individuality, and the pitfalls of tying identity too closely to another's profession. Tune in for a heart-to-heart discussion filled with insights, advice, and strategies to embrace a well-rounded sense of self.   ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/   CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC   CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r   Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/   Like what you hear?
