Emmy Award-winning director and Academy Award nominee Geeta Gandbhir joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss her critically acclaimed Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor, which uses years of police bodycam footage to reconstruct the events leading to the 2023 fatal shooting of Ajike Owens by her neighbor Susan Lorincz in Ocala, Florida. Gandbhir reveals that Owens was a personal friend of her family — her sister-in-law's best friend — and that the film was never initially planned as a documentary; she and her partner went to Florida to support the family and keep the story in the news, fearing Lorincz would walk free under Florida's stand your ground laws. The Sundance Directing Award winner explains how the production team obtained the bodycam footage through the family's attorneys, Benjamin Crump and Anthony Thomas, and describes the rare experience of having not just the aftermath but years of "before" footage — creating a slow-building tension she compares to Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity. Gandbhir emphasizes that the film doesn't preach; it simply presents the chronology and lets the audience decide. The conversation goes deeper into the systemic failures the footage revealed: Lorincz was the only person in the neighborhood who repeatedly called police, yet officers saw her as a nuisance rather than a threat — her whiteness, Gandbhir argues, shielding her from scrutiny. Police never checked whether Lorincz owned a gun, and in other states, her pattern of behavior would have resulted in harassment charges long before the shooting. Gandbhir explains why the case resulted in a manslaughter conviction rather than a more serious charge, advocates for the eradication of stand your ground laws that exist in 38 states, and makes a compelling case that some police funding would be better directed toward social workers and mental health professionals. She also reflects on what the film has meant to Owens' four children and their family, the power of bodycam footage as both a tool for truth and a potential instrument of surveillance, and what a potential Academy Award would mean — not for herself, but as a platform to drive real change. Chuck Todd argues that the United States is in an especially precarious moment of Trump's presidency — but that the guardrails of American democracy are proving they still exist. Todd breaks down the ruling's implications, noting that without tariff revenue the already ballooning U.S. budget deficit will accelerate, and that the coming chaos over refunds for billions in illegally collected duties will be a mess for businesses, consumers, and the trade deals that were negotiated under a now-invalidated framework. He highlights the emerging three distinct wings of the Supreme Court — with Gorsuch writing a pointed concurrence calling out his colleagues, Kavanaugh dissenting on foreign policy grounds, and the liberal justices joining Roberts on textual grounds — and argues the ruling reflects the public's own disapproval of Trump, which a new poll now places at 60% disapproval. He reserves his sharpest commentary for Trump's reaction: rather than pivot, the president attacked his own Supreme Court appointees for disloyalty and accused the Court of "foreign influence," a response Chuck calls a gift to Democrats and a sign that Trump is terrified dissent will become contagious among Republicans. Chuck also cautions that Democrats shouldn't celebrate too much — their brand remains damaged despite Trump's cratering numbers — and offers a counterintuitive observation: that Trump's greatest weakness isn't his authoritarian instincts but his laziness, arguing that his reliance on emergency powers is a shortcut to avoid the hard work of legislating. Then, Emmy Award-winning director and Academy Award nominee Geeta Gandbhir joins the Chuck Toddcast to discuss her critically acclaimed Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor, which uses years of police bodycam footage to reconstruct the events leading to the 2023 fatal shooting of Ajike Owens by her neighbor Susan Lorincz in Ocala, Florida. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the Reichstag fire & how Hitler was able to turn Germany’s democracy into a dictatorship through the use of emergency powers he was granted. He also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. pWotD Episode 3092: Killing of Ajike Owens Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 231,035 views on Sunday, 19 October 2025 our article of the day is Killing of Ajike Owens. On June 2, 2023, in Ocala, Florida, 35-year-old Ajike "A. J." Shantrell Owens was shot and killed by her neighbor, 58-year-old Susan Louise Lorincz. Owens had gone to Lorincz’s door after an altercation between her children and Lorincz in a grassy field nearby. While Owens stood outside the front door, Lorincz fired a single shot through it, striking Owens in the chest.Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office were already en route to the residence in response to a report of “trespassing” when a second 911 call reported gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Owens on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 10:00 p.m.The shooting drew national attention, igniting renewed debate over Florida’s stand-your-ground law and the intersection of race, self-defense, and neighborhood disputes. Civil rights advocates, including attorney Benjamin Crump, argued that Owens’s killing underscored systemic bias in how such laws are applied. Crump publicly called for Lorincz’s arrest, describing the incident as “an unconscionable killing of a mother who simply knocked on a door.”Lorincz was arrested on June 6, 2023, and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault. During interrogation, she claimed she acted in fear for her safety, though investigators later stated that forensic evidence contradicted elements of her account. In August 2024, following a week-long trial in Marion County Circuit Court, Lorincz was found guilty of manslaughter with a firearm. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison that November. In 2025, the case became the subject of the documentary film The Perfect Neighbor, which explored the broader cultural and racial dynamics surrounding the shooting and the public response that followed. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:44 UTC on Monday, 20 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Killing of Ajike Owens on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Joanna.

What really happened the night of the Breonna Taylor raid? In this episode, retired Louisville Sergeant John Mattingly shares his firsthand experience from the 2020 police operation that became a national flashpoint. Shot in the leg during the raid that left Breonna Taylor dead, Mattingly takes us beyond the headlines and social media narratives. From his upbringing in Portland, Louisville, to the pivotal moments that led him to a 20-year career in law enforcement, Mattingly recounts the intensity of working narcotics, shifting street dynamics, and the mental toll of policing a city on edge. We go deep into the night of the raid, what the warrant said, how entry unfolded, and the seconds before the first shot. Mattingly discusses the aftermath: public outrage, personal trauma, and even a $50,000 bounty placed on officers' heads. He also reflects on the broader failures of law enforcement training, public perception, and media framing.  Guest bio: John Mattingly is a retired Louisville Metro Police Sergeant with over 20 years in law enforcement, including high-risk narcotics work and undercover ops. Episode 177 Perhaps most people paying close objective attention to fatal police interactions with black citizens would roll their eyes whenever Benjamin Crump gets involved, but today we will discuss two such incidents where the officers involved may actually be wrong and Crump's involvement, while not ideal, is understandable. In May and July of 2024 respectively, Roger Fortson and Sonya Massey were killed in their interactions with the police. What were the circumstances that led to their deaths? Were the killings justified? On Friday, May 3 a Florida deputy responded to a domestic violence call.  Arriving at the apartment complex the deputy was met by the woman who'd made the call, who directed him to apartment 1401, in which she believed the violence to be occurring.  The deputy knocked on the door, standing on either side for purposes of safety.  When the door opened, the deputy was presented with a man with a gun plainly visible in his hand. The deputy immediately drew his service pistol and shot the man, killing him. That man would turn out to be Roger Fortson, a US Airman who was not, in fact, involved in a domestic violence event, and who by all accounts was doing nothing illegal at all when fatally shot by the deputy.  Fueled by the usual lies of race baiter Benjamin Crump, as well as by visions of how the world might be if perfect, the internet is hysterical with outrage. Could this tragic shooting nevertheless be lawful? Is it necessarily murder? Manslaughter? Or is it simply not a crime at all under the law of self-defense?Join me for an EMOTION-LESS, LAW-BASED analysis of the police shooting of Roger Fortson. THERE IS ONLY ONE SELF-DEFENSE "INSURANCE" PROVIDER I TRUST!There are lots of self-defense "insurance" companies out there. Some are hot garbage. Some have limited resources. In the late night hours of April 13, an 84-year-old homeowner living alone was awoken by someone banging on his front door. Lester prudently armed himself with a .32 caliber pistol, and opened his front door to respond to the person outside. Before him an unknown 6-foot-tall male, trespassing in violation of several no-trespassing signs, was attempting to force entry through his locked storm door--an apparent forcible home invasion. The homeowner shot at the attempted intruder twice, and the intruder fled. The homeowner then promptly called 911 to report the event. For this, the homeowner, Andrew Lester has been immediately targeted for racial arson by Benjamin Crump and others of his ilk, with a full-blown propaganda campaign raging across Twitter and news media demonizing Lester for having shot 16-year-old Ralph Yari simply for the "crime" of having rung Lester's doorbell.  Within a day Lester was charged by Prosecutor Zachary Thompson with the life felony of first-degree assault, as well as 15-year felony armed criminal action. Notably, Prosecutor Thompson informed the public that "It's been my goal from the very beginning to get justice for the child involved in the case." No mention was made of any interest in justice for Andrew Lester.Join me LIVE at 1 PM ET to discuss this newest travesty of justice being promulgated by Attorney Crump against yet another vulnerable victim of the racial grievance industrial complex. #AndrewLester #RalphYarlAMERICAN LAW COURSESGet a law-school level education in typical first-year (1L) law classes, including criminal law, constitutional law, evidence, property, and more, at a fraction of the cost and time of law school, and without any of the political toxicity of today's law schools. Israel is preparing for the arrival of President Joe Biden next month, but suddenly a change of plans: Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will no longer be the one to host the American leader. Instead, it'll likely be a new prime minister, the current foreign minister Yair Lapid. That's because after one year heading a diverse coalition, Bennett announced he's dissolving parliament following a series of defections from his own party. His political partner Lapid is set to take over until a new government is formed. Watching all this unfold is of course Benjamin Netanyahu, who hopes the collapse of the government means he can come back on top.
