Title: Messier MangersSeries: MultiplyPassage: Acts 6:1-7Most people love the idea of growth, especially in a church! Who doesn't want more people hearing the gospel, more families, more baptisms, and more people following Jesus? After all, Jesus commissioned us to make more disciples! However, what we don't realize, sometimes, is just what that growth will cost us… This week, we continue our Multiply series and see how the cost of multiplication and Messier Mangers is not only worth it, but how God uses it to grow His church in unexpected ways.

Send me a Text Message! As we listen to and ponder Luke 2. I think the main message is simpley, "Jesus is  the treasure of Christmas." When it comes to the continuing story of  Christmas, Jesus is written all over the pages of the book. It's so easy to focus on all the other elements. Shepherds and Wisemen and angels, oh my. Mangers and Santa and Elves, oh my. But nothing matters more than Jesus. Do we treasure him? Do we hold him in our hearts? When we are preparing for Christmas, do we find that we simply cannot stop thinking about Jesus?Perhaps the best way to prepare for Christmas is by praying daily, "Father, just give me Jesus!"

Jill Miller joins Paul, Jon and Liz for this conversation about what we can learn from the barnyard about how Christmas lands among everyday saints. "The ministry of the church happens through the hands and feet of everyday saints. So as we turn to Christmas, we thought it would be fun to both think about the Christmas story and also this idea of the saints. As we look at the Christmas story in Luke, we see that Christmas lands down among the saints." "The manger was so dirty, but Christ as a baby was laid in that. And now the Holy Spirit is in my heart, which so many times, is dirty just like the manger. He still dwells in manure!" "We were talking about Mary with the gang [our local Bethesda group for people affected by disability], and how there was no room in the inn and what one of the kids next to me whispered, “Kind of like there's no room for me. There wasn't any room for me in school.” And then another kid said, “Yeah, it's kind of tough to get into church.” They're used to low places and one day, hallelujah, they will be raised. I'll be the one washing the feet of these kids in heaven. It was really encouraging to them to see how Jesus entered the world and experienced what they feel!"

How do you get those? And which ones are available. Daniel has found out where to look, and built us a cheat sheet. Nice. Michael #3: httpx-sse Consume Server-Sent Event (SSE) messages with HTTPX. SSE are super lightweight, server → client only subscriptions. Like websockets but less overhead (especially for iot and mobile devices) httpx-sse provides the connect_sse and aconnect_sse helpers for connecting to an SSE endpoint. The resulting EventSource object exposes the .iter_sse() and .aiter_sse() methods to iterate over the server-sent events. Brian #4: Creating a context manager in Python Trey Hunner Context managers are those things you use in a with block. There's a bunch of cool built in ones. Building your own is a handy skill to have to clean up your code, and they're pretty easy, with Trey's tutorial. Shown is a great example of temporarily modifying an environmental variable. Then he gets into what you need to know about as, __enter__, and __exit__. Extras Brian: I think I'll nix the intro music to Python People. I didn't know what music to use, so I re-used the music from Test & Code. And I got some very honest feedback that it just doesn't fit and was better without it. So I'll rip it out soon. Gael O'Brien on Emotional Culture [Podcast]

Compliance Perspectives

By Adam Turteltaub For decades, if not centuries, the idea of being professional tended to focus on a cold, cognitive approach to work. Emotions were supposed to be secondary to a much more rationale form of management and work environments. In this podcast, Gael O'Brien, executive coach and columnist for Business Ethics Magazine and The Week in Ethics, shares the research of the late Wharton School Professor Sigal Barsade, who examined the impact of emotions in the workplace. Her work focused on how leaders can get culture right. Emotions, in particular compassion, were found to be very important. She also found that employees who feel loved at work perform better. Kindness, caring and feeling connected have a strong impact on employee satisfaction and retention. In fact, she found that employees are 10.4 times more likely to leave because of a toxic culture than they are to depart because of compensation. To create the right environment she is an advocate for an “emotional culture”, which she defines as the emotions necessary for a group to meet its goals. This culture, Barsade found, is transmitted through subtle signals such as facial expression and body language, especially of leaders. That's a challenge in these Zoom times when traditional queues may be missing. To get the right culture she advocates several steps including: Executives verbalizing, modeling and rewarding the emotions they want to cultivate Mangers communicating that information to front-line employees Surveys and interviews that ask employees what emotions they see in colleagues around them It's both an intuitive and counterintuitive approach. To learn more about Professor Barsade's work, read some of her articles in Harvard Business Review (article 1 and article 2). You can also see the video of a talk she gave.
