It involves ongoing observation and interaction to understand the subject's needs and preferences. As dog parents, we should actively pay attention to our dogs at dog parks to ensure optimal engagement. Some dogs may love socializing or only want to play catch with you. Lisa is joined by Meredith May who talks about her book,  Loving Edie: How a Dog Afraid of Everything Taught Me to Be Brave.   Meredith May, a former San Francisco Chronicle reporter, writes memoirs and children's books. She's also a fifth-generation beekeeper and volunteer scuba diver for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Her 2021 memoir, LOVING EDIE: How A Dog Afraid of Everything Taught Me To Be Brave, tells the story of Meredith's golden retriever puppy Edith who has extreme anxiety. Meredith and her wife Jenn learn how to love their sensitive dog because of, not in spite of, her disability.Meredith's 2019 memoir, THE HONEY BUS, reveals the life lessons she learned in her grandfather's Big Sur bee yard that rescued her from a difficult childhood. The book was published in seventeen countries, translated into eleven languages, and will be published by Cameron Kids as a children's picture book titled MY HIVE in Spring 2024.Her 2017 book: I, WHO DID NOT DIE, tells the true story of an Iranian child soldier who risked his life to save an enemy during the Iran-Iraq War – an astonishing act of bravery and kindness that changed the course of both their lives.During her sixteen-year career at the San Francisco Chronicle, Meredith's reporting garnered the PEN USA Literary Award for Journalism, the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism, and first place feature writing awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Press. Her series about an Iraqi boy wounded during the second Gulf War was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize.Meredith is a former professor of journalism and podcasting at Mills College in Oakland, CA. She lives in Carmel Valley, where she cares for several beehives.BOOK DESCRIPTION:From the author of The Honey Bus comes a wild and emotional memoir of family and self-discovery, featuring a lovable golden retriever named EdieMeredith May had a difficult childhood, with a mother who was physically present but emotionally absent. She learned early on to fend for herself, and never had to care for anyone else. When she and her wife, Jenn, adopt Edie, a sweet golden retriever puppy with saucer brown eyes and buttery white fur, Edie wins their hearts immediately. But it isn't long after Edie joins the family that the problems begin.Edie is an unusually anxious dog. She cowers around most people and the slightest noise sends her into a frenzy. Edie's fears become so intense that Meredith and Jenn can't leave the house. Is this normal puppy behavior or something more? Meredith grows determined to fix Edie, but what will she do if Edie can't be fixed? In this poignant and heartfelt memoir, Meredith shares her unforgettable journey with Edie, and the lessons about selflessness and unconditional love that she learns along the way. From treating Edie with CBD gummies to visiting a dog medium, Meredith shows just how far she is willing to go to save her dog. But maybe Edie is secretly the one doing the saving—if Meredith will only open her heart.

Meredith couldn't wait to add Edie, the Golden Retriever puppy to her family. She knew it would be just like raising her first two dogs.  She was wrong. From the first puppy class to trying to take a walk around the block – nothing about Edie was easy.  Edie was anxious and terrified of the world around her. And that was not what Meredith expected.  So now what was she going to do about it? I can't wait for you to hear from Meredith May, author of Loving Edie: How a Dog Afraid of Everything Taught Me to Be Brave. Both the book and my conversation with Meredith are honest admissions about the mistakes made along the way but ultimately about how the love of a dog can change the way we see the world and ourselves. I was fortunate to be connected with him through Meredith May, author of the Honey Bus. I was also very lucky to be granted access to view the film prior to the national day of screening which takes place on November 6th. I highly recommend this film not just for beekeepers, but for anyone who likes to eat food. The Pollinators highlights the major and the lesser seen flaws in our agricultural system, and how the migratory beekeepers are responding to the ongoing changes and challenges in order to keep our nation's crops pollinated. Today’s guest is an author, a journalist, a teacher, and a 5th generation beekeeper. Her most recent work, The Honey Bus, tells the story of a girl growing up in a dysfunctional family who finds solace in learning about bees and beekeeping from her grandfather. For someone who works with bees, the rich details knitted into this memoir are both comforting and familiar. The smells and sounds of the hive, and the emotional restoration that we find when we are working with our beloved insects.    I read The Honey Bus over the summer, after winning a copy of it and 2 jars of Honey Bus Honey from an instagram giveaway from one of my favorite beekeepers, Roda Shope of Indigo Acres Apiary. Meredith May is a beekeeper, journalist and author who grew up in the Big Sur area, along the central California coast. Her mother withdrew from Meredith's and her brother's lives following the breakup of her marriage. The Honey Bus is Meredith's memoir of growing up in her grandparent's home and helping her grandpa with the beekeeping chores. He helped her find structure, rhythm and stability during a place and time when home life with her mother was anything but, by showing how the bees make order out of chaos. Grandpa was a plumber and sideline beekeeper, who kept his years for years around the Central California community. His honey house was in fact, an old Army bus he stripped down and converted to hold his honey extraction and bottling operation. This is a heartwarming story of perseverance, love and honey bees that has a message for everyone - beekeepers and everyone else. Hello, CNF-buddies, it's The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak with the world's best artists about creating works of nonfiction—journalists, essayists, memoirists, radio producers, and documentary film makers—and how you can use their tools of mastery and apply it to your own work. That's right, you are in for a treat. Well, let's face it, you've always been in for a treat, but this week you're in for an Easter basket and Halloween sack all rolled into one verifiably true candy locker. New York Times bestselling author of Rin Tin Tin, The Orchid Thief, (which was made into the movie Adaptation), Saturday Night, My Kind of Place, The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup, and the children's book Lazy Little Loafers. She's a staff writer for The New Yorker (full archive here) and she came by the podcast to share her wisdom and experiences from a career writing deeply reported features. You can find Susan online @susanorlean on Twitter and visit her website susanorlean.com. What are some takeaways? Susan talks about always having an audience in mind, having supreme focus, and needing to see yourself as a business person if you plan on doing this type of work and that it's actually freeing, not stifling, in order to do the kind of work that excites you and feeds your ambitions. Before we get to that, I ask that you please subscribe to the podcast, share it with a friend, and leave a rating or, ideally, a nice review on iTunes, like this one from Meredith May. She said, “Real conversations among professional writers about the essence of craft. A behind the scenes look at the way stories come together, from inception to publication, that doesn't shy away from the truth about the difficulties and triumphs of making a living from words. One of the hardest concepts for my podcasting students to grasp is how differentiate between a story and a topic—this podcast helps them find that X-factor that makes a story sing.” Wow. Shoutout to that five-star review. If you leave one, I might just read it on the air! It's time for the show, episode 61 with Susan Orlean!

Joshua has turned inward for his latest book, Sirens, a literary memoir that grapples with the constant challenges involved with what Meredith May calls “letting chaos flow into sordid stories.”
