Angelica è una rassegna bolognese che da trent'anni in primavera propone un ampio cartellone dedicato a forme molto varie di avanguardia musicale. Già in passato Angelica ha pubblicato degli album, ma adesso la sua attività discografica sembra aver innestato un'altra marcia, con una nutrita serie di uscite e - forte di un archivio di registrazioni che testimonia della qualità della sua programmazione - con un livello molto alto delle proposte. Apriamo la puntata con un doppio cd prezioso per più di un motivo: At Angelica 2000 Bologna di Cecil Taylor, che documenta il solo dello straordinario pianista afroamericano nel 2000, ma anche la rara conversazione in pubblico alla quale Taylor si era concesso nella stessa occasione, di cui viene fornita la registrazione corredata di minuziosa trascrizione in inglese con traduzione in italiano. Passiamo in rassegna poi due album di due maestri afroamericani del post-free: il Duo (2018) del sassofonista Anthony Braxton con l'arpista Jacqueline Kerrod, e Splatter di Roscoe Mitchell, che presenta due esibizioni del 2017 di Mitchell, una delle quali con l'Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna; e due di due capiscuola della free music europea: Rituals of Transition del compianto Misha Mengelberg (piano solo in diverse occasioni nel nuovo millennio, fra cui Bologna 2002), e The Catch of A Ghost cointestato al sassofonista tedesco Peter Brotzmann, al marocchino Moukhtar Gania e al chicagoano Hamid Drake, e registrato ad Angelica nel 2019.
Meer dan vijftig jaar geleden richtte pianist en componist Misha Mengelberg een eigen ensemble op: Instant Composers Pool. Vanwege het jubileum is er nu een cd verschenen met werk van Mengelberg door ICP en Nieuw Amsterdams Peil. Hij is er zelf niet meer bij, hij overleed in 2017. Een hommage aan een van de meest recalcitrante figuren uit de Nederlandse muziek. Guus Janssen, die al een tijdje de positie inneemt van Mengelberg aan de vleugel schetst een portret. Hij maakte zelf kennis met het fenomeen tijdens een concert dat hij als 12-jarige bijwoonde. Hij zag met eigen ogen hoe de pianist onder de vleugel dook en daar een rotje afstak.
In deze uitzending hoor je delen uit het uitvoerige interview dat Aad van Nieuwkerk had met Aart Strootman. Over het bouwen van instrumenten, maar ook over zijn liefde voor de minimal music. Nieuwe CD van de Instant Composers Pool samen met Nieuw Amsterdams Peil. 'De Hondemepper' is de titel van een van de stukken op de CD, een compositie van Misha Mengelberg. Muziek op het volkomen onoverzichtelijke kruispunt van jazz en modern klassiek, met een gezonde dosis humor en relativering. Ook een stukje van de vader van Misha Mengelberg: Karel Mengelberg (1902 - 1984), componist,dirigent, Chef-Tonmeister bij de Duitse radio in de jaren ‘20, directeur van een muziekschool, criticus bij Het Vrije Volk, en medewerker van muziekbladen als Mens en Melodie.
Herbie Nichols was a master of the piano which has inspired generations of musicians after his passing, despite the little commercial success that his albums obtained when first released. 2019 marks the centennial of his birth and to remedy the lack of retrospectives that his work should have, but hasn't, received this year, this week's edition of Mondo Jazz will be looking into the impact that his memorable compositions have had on a number of contemporary artists. This episode includes both compositions that Nichols was able to record himself, as well as others that he never managed to bring to a recording studio, but other musicians after him did. As a special bonus, also never released material by the Herbie Nichols Project, one of the bands that championed Nichols' music. Pianist Red Wierenga is a member of the Respect Sextet and the Respect Trio. He also plays accordion in the Claudia Quintet. El ICP (Instant Composers Pool) se fundó en 1987, y casi medio siglo después presenta una grabación sin uno de sus fundadores, Misha Mengelberg. En esta edición de 'Club de Jazz' del 2 de mayo de 2015 escuchamos "East of the sun", disco en el que la formación liderada por Han Bennink mantiene muy vivas las constantes creativas de este grupo. Nos aproximamos a la música del pianista Herbie Nichols (al que Mengelberg dedicó uno de sus trabajos) a través de sus propias grabaciones y del disco que le dedicó el pianista ruso Simon Nabatov. Precisamente a Nabatov dedicamos unos minutos a través de su disco sobre música de Nichols, pero también con la música de su quinteto, el dúo junto al trombonista Nils Wogram y como integrante del trío junto al baterista estadounidense Gerry Hemingway y al clarinetista turco Oguz Büyükberber. "desde mi cadiera" Jesús Moreno nos trae la música del Sputnik Trio del saxofonista Ricardo Tejero y la música del nuevo disco del pianista británico Alexander Hawkins. En el "Jazz Porteño", Alberto Varela nos cuela en el Café Vinilo de Buenos Aires para escuchar el guiño "coltraniano" del saxofonista Carlos Lastra. Carlo Actis Dato y Baldo Martínez se reúnen de nuevo. Tras "Folklore imaginario" (publicado en 2005 en Leo Records) llega ahora "Sonidos de la tierra". En esta edición de "Club de Jazz" del 31 de octubre de 2012 escuchamos a esta extraña y fascinante pareja danzante así como las dos últimas criaturas discográficas del saxofonista portorriqueño Miguel Zenón: "Alma adentro" y el "Rayuela" que comparte con el pianista francés Laurent Coq. Con Jesús Moreno comentamos "desde mi cadiera" la reciente actuación en Huesca de Han Bennink, a quien escuchamos en una grabación sesentera del cuarteto de Misha Mengelberg.
