Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.

049: Adam LevyGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music, I’m Trevor. Thanks for listening. On Wednesday, July 22 of 2020 music is not content, it’s connection. If you like this show, please tell a friend! We have a great one for you today with world-renowned guitarist and songwriter Adam Levy.[photo by B.E. Bixby]I’ve always admired Adam’s work. His vibe, his bandleading style and his playing all convey a core enjoyment and honesty in the craft. It’s hard to pin down, there’s just real joy and respect and soul and knowledge… all visible and audible and wrapped into a cohesive American style. I find great comfort and inspiration in the man’s music.Levy was born in Encino, California. His grandfather worked for The Andy Williams Show and The Flip Wilson Show as music director. He played in bands growing up, then moved to San Francisco in 1990. He played with Tracy Chapman for a little while (that’s his guitar you can hear on Gimme One Reason). But he also spent quite a while moving between SF and New York, infiltrating the legendary downtown scene and playing with Joey Baron, Steve Cardenas, Tony Scherr… all up in it with those cats. And then he met Norah Jones. [photo by Todd Chalfant]Adam became a member of her band at the beginning of her career and stayed on through that first set of bestselling albums. You could say he’s best known for that gig, but he has also played with Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, and Lisa Loeb and continues to put out lots of his own great work. His trio is called the Mint Imperials. This conversation gets around, we touch on the origins, the journeys and his current output. What does it take to keep it together in this very delicate life we’ve chosen? Adam is someone with a lot of wisdom to shed on these eternal questions, and we can all call ourselves lucky to be sharing some time with him today. He is perhaps best known for his work with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette in that magical and profound trio. Peacock has ventured out on his own as leader a few times and this album will be perhaps his final statement as he is now due to age and hearing loss retired from active playing. This thoughtful and introspective recording was done in July of 2014 and features the piano of Marc Copland and the drums of Joey Baron. 7 of the eleven compositions are by Peacock and he is a marvelous composer. Copland wrote two and Baron, one. Peacock honours his contemporary and late friend bassist Scott LaFaro with a version of LaFaro's "Gloria's Step". All in al this album is a wonderful way to wind up a stellar career........"Now This" will be memorable.
