There were several jazz players named Joe Thomas - this one was perhaps the best! A trumpeter who worked with Fletcher Henderson and a number of other big bands, he really came to prominence during the 1940's in assorted small group swing recordings. This podcast features some of the great sessions he made for the Keynote label with players such as Jack Teagarden, Earl Hines, Trummy Young, Red Norvo, Hilton Jefferson, Coleman Hawkins and Vic Dickenson as well as some lesser known but superb players such as Ted Nash and Hank D'Amico. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support
A brand new rowing competition just being launched. Be the first to hear about it from Alix James, President and CEO of Nielsen Kellerman. Timestamps 1:00 Background in sport - NK founded by Alix's stepfather. 03:30 NK was the first company to do rowing electronics as a business. Friends with Ted Nash whose crew used a home made amplifier system. Paul Nielsen fixed it - but suggested he could make a better amplifier. Later added stroke rate and timing. 04:50 British founder chose the "Cox Box: name which is tongue in cheek from Alix's father who was also a Gilbert and Sullivan fan. Concept 2 had made the rowing machine but hadn't worked out how to output wattage onto a screen. 06:00 The 500meter split was invented in 1981-82when Dick, Peter and Paul went for a run and were looking for a way to make the rowing machine output meaningful for rowers. It is aligned to the wattage / speed translation for a heavyweight mens 4- boat speed. 08:30 Many rowing companies date from late 70s - 80s, it's not a coincidence that Title IX exploded the women's rowing programs. 10:30 The Summer Regatta Series. Use The Link Log Book and livestream data to enable anyone to watch worldwide. https://nksports.com/speedcoach-summer-regatta-series 14:00 The incremental approach to building the functionality - you need a Speedcoach GPS and Training Pack. The first race is 2,100 meters - modelled on Henley Royal Regatta. Use the Compete tab on the website to find the details. 22:00 There is a goal to add local rowing courses into future races. In future filtering in the Log Book will allow age, sex and weight rankings. They also want to put an out-and-back race option. They hope to create a standing all-time leader board of events and a directory of rowing courses worldwide with a map of pins. 35:00 Contact Alix info@nkhome.com or Charlie Biddle cbiddle@nkhome.com with any feedback.

Meet two of the most vibrant jazz talents on the scene today! Kristen Lee Sergeant’s current release, “Smolder,” is a story of fire — love ignited, ablaze and extinguished. DownBeat critic Bobby Reed writes “This elegant album illustrates what can happen when admirable ambition is paired with vocal vibrancy.” Her collaborator on this wonderful new album is jazz saxophonist and composer Ted Nash, Grammy-winner and a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra directed by Wynton Marsalis. Ted is also one of the founders of the Jazz Composers Collective. They make beautiful music together and their love of wine has led to them producing their own wine called “Two Notes,” a Bordeaux blend from California, soon to be in its second vintage. Herbie Nichols was a master of the piano which has inspired generations of musicians after his passing, despite the little commercial success that his albums obtained when first released. 2019 marks the centennial of his birth and to remedy the lack of retrospectives that his work should have, but hasn't, received this year, this week's edition of Mondo Jazz will be looking into the impact that his memorable compositions have had on a number of contemporary artists. This episode includes both compositions that Nichols was able to record himself, as well as others that he never managed to bring to a recording studio, but other musicians after him did. As a special bonus, also never released material by the Herbie Nichols Project, one of the bands that championed Nichols' music. The playlist also includes Paul Motian, Ted Nash, Dave Douglas, Heikki Sarmanto, Simon Nabatov, Duck Baker, Roswell Rudd, Misha Mengelberg, Steve Lacy, Pietro Tonolo, Flavio Boltro, Emmanuel Bex, Joe Chambers, Lucas Gillan, Ben Allison, Mal Waldron, Buell Neidlinger, Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, The Mary Lou Williams Collective, Matt Wilson, Simon Nabatov. This week we focus on the music of two of the most influential composers of film and TV scores of all times, Henry Mancini and Ennio Morricone. Their compositional styles lend themselves to jazz interpretations, with Mancini being a soundtracks composer that often relied on jazz motifs and smaller ensembles and Morricone coming to the world of soundtracks after playing the trumpet in jazz bands in the 1940s. So we have two hours of jazz interpretations of their unforgettable themes, performed by Ted Nash, Oranj Symphonette, Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine, Lucia Cadotsch, Freddie Roach, Joe Jackson, John Stowell, Quincy Jones, Noël Akchoté, Johnny Hartman, Eddie Harris, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Henry Mancini, John Zorn, Marco Cappelli, Jens Thomas, Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, Marcin Wasilewski, Ennio Morricone. En ouverture l'on s'offre trois pièces de Eric Dolphy sur les albums Iron Man (Restless, 1963), Live at the Five Spot Vol. 2 (Prestige/OJC, 1961) et Out There (New Jazz/OJC, 1960).

The Jazztet and John Lewis (Mercury, 1961).
