The first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy, Avi Avital's remarkable virtuosity from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary compositions has reignited fascination with the mandolin as an instrument worthy of center stage. Avi discusses the intuitive nature of a plucked instrument and how it still excites him to this day, why he finds boredom a blessing, and how his poor pick grip is recognizable by a select group of mandolinists. Reflecting on his childhood performances with his local youth orchestra, Avi shares how the social aspect kept him playing despite his hatred for the tedious and solitary nature of practice, something he still feels to this day despite his talent and success. Avi considers two turning points in his musical development, the first while in high school when he fell in love with the rock music of Nirvana and Pearl Jam and learned how to play drums, keyboard, and guitar, and the second while attending a performance of Il Giardino Armonico at a Jerusalem theater while studying at The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. SynopsisAntonio Lucio Vivaldi came into the world on today's date in 1678 a few days after an earthquake shook Venice. The newborn was baptized immediately — just in case little Antonio's first day also turned out to be his last.Vivaldi's father was a violinist, and even though Antonio quickly became a virtuoso on that instrument himself, he became a Roman Catholic priest.Vivaldi complained of chest pains whenever he celebrated Mass — a medical excuse that allowed him to forgo his priestly duties and to concentrate on writing music, including dozens of operas and hundreds of concertos.By his mid-40s, Vivaldi was a major figure on the European musical scene, but his fortunes gradually took a turn for the worse. The church ordered him to stop composing music for the theater and, for heaven's sake, to stop gadding around Europe in the company of female opera singers!Vivaldi went to Vienna in 1740, hoping to find a court position with Emperor Charles VI, a big fan of his music, but after eating some bad mushrooms, the emperor died. Na jedynym zachowanym portrecie olejnym François Joseph Gosseca kompozytor w dumnej pozie siedzi z piórem w dłoni. Na pulpicie za nim widnieje „Marche lugubre”, a na półce poniżej jego drugie „Te Deum” – obie kompozycje napisane dla upamiętnienia poległych bohaterów Rewolucji Francuskiej. O Gossecu powiedział jeden z krytyków, że był najbardziej zaangażowanym politycznie kompozytorem Europy. Czy to prawda? Nie całkiem. Owszem, oddał swój talent Rewolucji, ale w przeciwieństwie do wielu swoich kolegów po fachu nigdy nie był oportunistą. Za swoje oddanie ideom wolności, równości i braterstwa otrzymał przydomek Tyrteusza Rewolucji, ale jednocześnie przez szalonego Robespierre'a niemal stracił głowę na gilotynie. Dziś jednak to nie jego rewolucyjna twórczość, ale wielka symfoniczna msza żałobna „Grande Messe des Morts” skomponowana w wieku zaledwie 26 lat uchodzi za dzieło życia Gosseca. Wzorowali się na niej wszyscy – Mozart, Cherubini, a szczególnie Berlioz. Antonini is the recorder soloist in the Bach, while elaborate recording techniques allow Avital to play all four parts in the Vivaldi. Concertos is set for release by Deutsche Grammophon on 17 November. Voilà des années que Patricia Kopatchinskaja nous habitue à ne rien faire comme les autres. Le programme qu'elle présente ici avec les instruments historiques de l'ensemble milanais Il Giardino Armonico s'inscrit parfaitement dans cette dynamique: il fait en effet dialoguer des concertos de Vivaldi avec des œuvres pour violon seul de compositeurs italiens contemporains, dont elle a pour la plupart suscité la création. Et Vienne dans tout cela? La capitale impériale n'est autre – ce que l'on ignore bien souvent – que l'ultime demeure du «prêtre roux». Il y trouve la mort fin juillet 1741 dans le dénuement le plus total et l'indifférence générale. La légende raconte que lors du cérémonial réservé aux indigents célébré en Saint-Etienne se trouvait dans le chœur un jeune garçon du nom de… Joseph Haydn.

Seit Jahren erleben wir Patricia Kopatchinskaja mit ebenso ungewöhnlichen wie überraschenden Projekten – das hier dargebotene Programm mit den historischen Instrumenten des Mailänder Ensembles Il Giardino Armonico macht da keine Ausnahme. Es lädt ein zu einem Dialog zwischen den Konzerten Vivaldis und Werken zeitgenössischer italienischer Komponisten für Violine solo, die sie zumeist selbst in Auftrag gegeben hat. Und welche Rolle spielt Wien dabei? Die kaiserliche Metropole war – und das wird oft übersehen – der letzte Aufenthaltsort des «roten Priesters». Dort ist er 1741 verarmt und unbeachtet gestorben. Beim Trauergottesdienst für mittellose Bürger im Stephansdom soll der Legende zufolge dem Knabenchor ein junger Bursche namens... Joseph Haydn angehört haben.
Giovanni Antonini, der energiegeladene Italiener, Blockflötist und Dirigent steckt mittendrin im Projekt "Haydn 2032". Bis zum 300. Geburtstag Haydns will er in einer Koproduktion mit Il Giardino Armonico und dem Kammerorchester Basel alle Symphonien des Komponisten aufnehmen. Soeben ist, mit den Baslern, die elfte CD der Reihe unter dem Titel "Au Gout Parisien" erschienen.

HAYDN 2032 nennt sich die fulminante Edition sämtlicher 107 Sinfonien von Joseph Haydn. Nun ist die zehnte Folge mit "Il Giardino Armonico" erschienen, u.a. mit den frühen drei Tageszeiten-Sinfonien des Komponisten.

On today’s date in 1981, “Cats,” a musical by the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber opened at the New London Theatre in that city’s fashionable West End. Despite a bomb threat and brief evacuation of the theatre, the premiere of “Cats” was a great success. 8,949 performances later, on the same date in 2002, when the show finally closed, it had long since entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running musical to date. In London, it took in 136 million British pounds in ticket sales. Worldwide, “Cats” has taken in billions of dollars, has been seen by millions, and has been performed in 11 different languages in over 26 countries.
