Normal service resumes with a podcast devoted to tributes celebrating the still-obscure pianist and composer Herbie Nichols. Nichols spent his truncated career in the shadow of Thelonious Monk (a big guy who cast a big shadow). He released roughly four albums in his lifetime and spent much of his career scuffling in Dixieland bands, but those initiated into his cult realize he was a truly gifted and unique composer. These tributes encompass a fairly straight ahead quintet date, a more adventuresome guitar trio, a solo piano recital, and a vocal set with brand new lyrics (and titles!) for many of Herbie's songs. Eric T. Johnson – HERBIE NICHOLS VOL 1; Enrique Heredia Trio – PLAY HERBIE NICHOLS; Simon Nabatov – SPINNING SONGS OF HERBIE NICHOLS; Fay Victor – LIFE IS FUNNY THAT WAY.
As we noted so succinctly way back in 2014: Some trios play nicer together than others - Pat and Mike investigate. Duke Ellington – MONEY JUNGLE; Terri Lyne Carrington – MONEY JUNGLE PROVOCATIVE IN BLUE; Jean-Michel Pilc – WELCOME HOME; Herbie Nichols – LOVE, GLOOM, CASH, LOVE. Tune in next time as the Herbie Nichols connection leads to a brand new episode covering four albums devoted solely to his music.
Fay Victor is a Brooklyn-born vocalist and bandleader who earlier this year released Life is Funny That Way, an album reimagining the compositions of pianist Herbie Nichols. Nichols was known for composing the music for Billie Holiday's famous song, “Lady Sings the Blues.” Ahead of her first headlining set at Dizzy's Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center on July 24, Victor joins with her band for a special live performance.

It's an episode years in the making when Mike is finally able to track down guitarist, composer, and raconteur Duck Baker. We discovered Duck through his solo recording of Herbie Nichols' tunes, but Mike finds out that Duck has collaborated with such luminaries as John Zorn, Roswell Rudd, and Eugene Chadbourne while keeping up a stream of solo and group releases and composing dozens of tunes. Don't miss this discussion from one of the only finger-style guitarists as comfortable at playing folk tunes and jazz covers as he is traveling to outer space. And be sure to visit www.duckbaker.com for more information on this artist.

I've had a busy week, and haven't had the time to complete the Herbie Nichols episode that I'm working on. It will be ready for next Wednesday. In the meantime, enjoy a track from Herbie's first album!
Four six-string masters going solo are the focus for this fortnight's podcast, and they cover the gamut from acoustic true-believers to studio mavens ready to mix it up with multi-tracking and effects pedals. What are the benefits - and dangers - of attempting jazz without compadres? Wouldn't you know it, Pat & Mike have opinions on that topic. Pop matters focuses squarely on the King - at least for white people of a certain age - Elvis Presley. Steve Khan – EVIDENCE; Duck Baker – SPINNING SONG; Joe Pass – VIRTUOSO; Leo Kottke – THE BEST.
Herbie Nichols was a master of the piano which has inspired generations of musicians after his passing, despite the little commercial success that his albums obtained when first released. 2019 marks the centennial of his birth and to remedy the lack of retrospectives that his work should have, but hasn't, received this year, this week's edition of Mondo Jazz will be looking into the impact that his memorable compositions have had on a number of contemporary artists. This episode includes both compositions that Nichols was able to record himself, as well as others that he never managed to bring to a recording studio, but other musicians after him did. As a special bonus, also never released material by the Herbie Nichols Project, one of the bands that championed Nichols' music. The playlist also includes Paul Motian, Ted Nash, Dave Douglas, Heikki Sarmanto, Simon Nabatov, Duck Baker, Roswell Rudd, Misha Mengelberg, Steve Lacy, Pietro Tonolo, Flavio Boltro, Emmanuel Bex, Joe Chambers, Lucas Gillan, Ben Allison, Mal Waldron, Buell Neidlinger, Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, The Mary Lou Williams Collective, Matt Wilson, Simon Nabatov. VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt has known pianist/organist/composer Michael Kocour for more than a dozen years. A nationally-renown educator, Mike is the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a recording artist for Origin Records, releasing a solo piano album, East of the Sun, on that label’s OA2 imprint earlier this year. In early summer, Mike sat down with Russ to partake in spirited, engaging discussions on jazz, music education, and the nature of creativity. In this second of two podcasts together, they discussed the sometimes-random nature in discovering one’s passions and influences, the deeper truths revealed on vinyl records, and even the lengthy path to be travelled just to join a school’s “stage band”.

Some trios play nicer together than others - Pat and Mike investigate. Duke Ellington – MONEY JUNGLE; Terri Lynn Carrington – MONEY JUNGLE PROVOCATIVE IN BLUE; Jean Michel Pilc – WELCOME HOME; Herbie Nichols – LOVE, GLOOM, CASH, LOVE.
This obscure artist who rarely if ever played his music in public (he made his living playing in Dixieland and show bands) was able through the graces of Blue Note Records' Alfred Lion to record a series of dates with hand-picked sidemen playing his own compositions. Lion released Herbies first two albums on two 10" LPs called "The Prophetic Herbie Nichols" Volumes 1 & 2. Tonight we hear his first 12 pieces that made up these records. Nichols is on piano with Al McKibbon on bass and Art Blakey on drums. The dates were done in May of 1955 and presents the evocative compositions of Mr. Nichols with his marvelous piano playing. The prophetic Herbie Nichols indeed!
Herbie Nichols would have been 92 years old today. The pianist is the subject of a new biography -- Herbie Nichols: A Jazzist's Life by Mark Miller. In this interview, Miller talks about why Nichols failed to become known during his lifetime; why Nichols is often labeled an acolyte of Thelonious Monk; and how Miller came to write the book in the first place. Learn more at the Web site of The Mercury Press. ADDITIONAL LISTENING: Check out the "Herbie Nichols' Third World" episode of David Brent Johnson's excellent Night Lights program. UPDATE: At the end of this episode, I said that Herbie Nichols died at the age of 34. He actually died at the age of 44. Thanks to listener Robert Klein for the correction.
