Coming from a supportive family, Carter was raised strictly on academics, but he found a liking in sports. Carter attended college at Contra Costa College, then San Francisco State, and finally George Fox University, where he played basketball. As a basketball coach, he maintained that his athletes must take their studies seriously, as good academic performance would give them access to college and other opportunities in life. This belief was put to the test when, as a high school basketball coach at Richmond High School, he locked out his undefeated team for not honoring academic and behavioral contracts. While the community was outraged at first, public opinion eventually changed, and Carter was praised for his determined emphasis on prioritizing good values for his team. His approach also bore results: every one of his players at Richmond, where he coached from 1997 to 2002, graduated The story of the 1999 season is the basis for the 2005 film Coach Carter, with Carter played by Samuel L. Bishop Ken Carter is a leader. As the current bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, he is guiding over 173,000 members through Hurricane Helene recovery. In addition to that, he serves as bishop-in-residence and a consulting faculty member at Duke Divinity School. He is also the former bishop of the Florida Conference, and served as the president of the Council of Bishops of the UMC from 2018-2020. So, yes, Bishop Carter is a leader. But he leads with a spirit of openness, love, and concern for others. He values having supportive ecosystems of people to help each other, to be a point of connection during moments of pain and weakness and to offer that support back during times of strength. He leads with an eye toward adapting to the moment--not throwing out all traditions, but discerning what needs to be preserved, discarded, or simply rearranged to meet the current need.Resources:Listen to Bishop Carter's previous episode on The WeightOr listen to our conversations on leadership with Tod Bolsinger: Adaptive Leadership and Mistakes Good Leaders MakeBuy Bishop Carter's books on Amazon, including Gardens in the Desert: How Adaptive Church Can Lead to a Whole New Life, co-authored with Michael BeckDonate to Hurricane Helene relief through the United Methodist Committee on Relief

Ken shares his own path from aspiring to be a TV anchorman to becoming a clinical psychologist skilled at making complex concepts accessible. The conversation then shifts to psychology to cover the "epidemic of loneliness" and lack of deep social connections in the social media age. Dr. Carter offers perspectives on AI's potential impacts on mental health and therapy, as well as the importance of building resilience and normalizing failure discussions. He provides insights into navigating the modern media landscape as an expert voice. Other highlights include lessons from the psychology of extreme sports/thrill-seeking and Dr. Carter's philosophy of maintaining curiosity and awe. Skydiving, BASE jumping, climbing the highest peaks, adventuring to remote parts of the world — pushing the boundaries of safety. For thrill-seekers, chasing the rush is what it's all about. Where lots of us would break into a cold sweat, they experience something different: calm, focus, even moments of sublime awe. So what is it that makes thrill-seekers different? On this episode, we investigate what fuels their desire for adventure, and ask when the pursuit of kicks becomes dangerous and disruptive. We hear stories about storm chasers, rocket builders, and hikers. We also talk to a psychologist who avoids thrills in his personal life, but is deeply invested in understanding why other people love it. Also heard on this week’s episode: Meteorologist John Homenuk unpacks the appeal of his greatest passion — chasing storms. We talk with clinical psychologist Ken Carter about what sets thrill-seekers apart from the rest of us. His book is “Buzz: Inside the Minds of Thrill-Seekers, Daredevils, and Adrenaline Junkies.” At first, Doran Lamb thought hiking and climbing mountains was a healthy habit, something to replace her addiction to alcohol. But then she realized that it wasn't.

The Weight welcomes Bishop Ken Carter, the President of the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church to discuss the ongoing debate of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the United Methodist Church. Carter has been an active participant in many efforts to bring about a resolution to the impasse that the church is in, including being one of the leaders who developed and proposed the Protocol for Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation that has a chance to be adopted at the upcoming General Conference of the United Methodist Church. To engage the issue, we discussed topics involving theological pluralism, the essentials of Church practice, centrism, as well as what's important to consider for potential church restructuring. Bishop Carter emphasizes the importance of having a pastoral heart when discerning how the church should be in ministry with LGBT persons as well as his passion for ensuring the vibrancy of the United Methodist Church for future leaders and congregants. Resources:Embracing the Wideness: The Shared Convictions of The United Methodist ChurchThis book is Bishop Carter's attempt to chart a vision of “generous orthodoxy” for the future of the UMC.Narrow is the WayThis is an essay by a young Wesleyan scholar named Justus Hunter, in which he critiques Bishop Carter's vision for the future of Methodism.A Beginner's Guide to Practicing Scriptural ImaginationIn this short book, Bishop Carter models an engagement with scripture that doesn't simply emphasize “thinking” about the Bible or “applying” the Bible in practical ways as if the Scriptures were a guidebook. “Scriptural imagination” is the result of a person who has been so immersed in the biblical story that it transforms what they see and how they hope. Here, he focuses on four scripture passages to give readers an easy entry into the practice of scriptural imagination.
