Lecturer and author Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein is the featured guest on this encore episode of “613 Books” Podcast, discussing some of the key concepts he writes about in his new book, “Sukkos: A Symphony of Joy.” Rabbi Bernstein clarifies what exactly we are celebrating in this zeman simchaseinu. And if you are puzzled by the Hoshanos service or Simchas Beis Hasho'eva, Rabbi Bernstein clarifies these elements of the Festival for us. He also notably connects the Sukkos theme of Divine protection to the tranquility we all can tap into that our Creator is the Source of all things and events, so we need not pressure ourselves to steer everything in our lives on the course we're inclined to go. With tranquility we can choose to remember that “the same Divine Providence and Divine Supervision that is so much the focus on Sukkos is really something that continues to guide us throughout the year but then allows us to be tranquil.” Subscribe to “613 Books” Podcast and discover new books every week! ========================= Show notes: This episode's featured guest: Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein Featured book: “Sukkos: A Symphony of Joy” To Purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sukkos-Symphony-Rabbi-Immanuel-Bernstein/dp/1961602083 To Purchase through Mosaica Press: https://mosaicapress.com/product/sukkos-a-symphony-of-joy/ Visit Rabbi Bernstein's website: Journeysintorah.com

Are the Jewish people united? It may seem like a simple question but it's not. Before October 7th, the Knesset faced a great division among its people. During the 96th Academy Awards, we saw Jewish filmmakers speaking against Israel. Among Jews, we see labels and identifiers to help tell our ethnic story. Depending on the context, that label can be used in a negative. In this thought-provoking episode, Rabbi Yaacov Haber discusses with Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, to discuss the identity crisis and compromise that is Jewish identity. Rabbi Haber goes in-depth on the multifaceted nature and opinions of Jewish identity, from the front lines in Israel to the international diaspora, and the complex but beautiful symphony of individual roles contributing to the grander Jewish narrative. 00:00 Introduction to Rabbi Yaacov Haber 04:17 Are Jews United? 06:45 Diverse opinions in democracy and Judaism's disunity 11:23 The relevance and value of every Jew 13:38 Unity within division 19:31 International opinions of Israel 22:02 Peace 24:27 Reaction to antisemtism 28:38 Being a light unto nations 30:27 Conclusion About Rabbi Yaacov Haber: Since 1978, Rabbi Yaacov Haber has been a leading figure in the global Jewish community, with a rich history of leadership in education and spiritual guidance. His journey includes founding the Australian Institute of Torah, revitalizing the Jewish community in Buffalo, New York, serving as National Director of Jewish Education for the Orthodox Union, and playing a pivotal role in the Association of Jewish Outreach Programs (AJOP), where he furthered Jewish outreach and education. Notably, Rabbi Haber also served as the Rav of Congregation Bais Torah in Monsey, New York. Today, Rabbi Haber is the Rav and Spiritual Leader of Kehillat Shivtei Yeshurun in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel. His ongoing role at Shivtei Yeshurun represents a significant chapter in a career dedicated to fostering Jewish learning, community, and spiritual growth. Yael Zien is an Orthodox journalist in Israel. Although, it's extremely uncommon in the charedie world for a woman to go into television and radio, she was advised by Gedolei Yisroel that if she can let the world know about Hashem/God then it is worth it. Yael has been on the ground reporting every bit of news since October 7th. A week after Israel was attached, she and her team went to Be'eri to see the horrors that occurred. Larry Gordon was born and raised in Brooklyn, and has six children; including Nachi Gordon, co-host of Meaningful People Podcast. He is a veteran journalist, writing stories on Jewish life and related issues for thirty years. He is also the acknowledged creator of modern Jewish radio. Larry's program, the “Hebrew and Jewish program,” and the format he created, is the direct, originating predecessor of the world famous JM in the AM radio show hosted by Nachum Segal. Larry's interest in journalism is inspired by his father, Nison Gordon, a”h, who traveled from Poland when he was 18-years-old to report on life in New York City as the American correspondent for a Polish newspaper. Larry's father's became a well know Yiddish writer, writing for “The Day,” “The Day Morning Journal,” and “The Algemeiner Journal,” during a career that spanned over 45 years. ____________________________________ ►Ceremian (Alpert and Associates) Call Moshe Alpert! 306 The Escape of A Good Book Following the theme of art and how it inspires us, this week is writing. We have all picked up a book that shaped us in one way or another, and maybe we're still looking for that next book capable of bringing us comfort and escape from our busy lives. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Adina Edelman discuss the importance of how writing impacts us and how working with authors has given Adina the opportunity to read and contribute to these works of art. Highlights Keep on trying, especially when you fail. Even if there is a failure you can still turn it into something better, even if it wasn't the original idea you had. Make sure when you help someone that you are uplifting their voice and not replacing it with your own. Quotes “You've got to keep on trying it, and even to walk in with that sort of expectation that it is a process and it's okay if things go wrong, and there will be elements in there that both need improvement, but you know the batter still tasted good. There was still something working there, there are going to be pros and cons at each stage.” “There are so many analogies with music and writing they just pop up everywhere, as for how it comes into play with working with my clients, well one thing is that just like there's rhythm in music and so many different ways to play with notes to bring about a certain experience, that's the same thing with writing. So that sort of melodic tendency in writing in order to pick that up and use that when I'm editing, so you know you could say that they are two separate things but it also could be that they are related.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I know it's hard to take the time to pick up a book and read, and what I'm finding is that the more I meet these authors the more I want to dive into their books. So maybe the next thing for you to do if you want to read more is don't feel like you have to read nonfiction, read something that lights you up, read something that helps you get away from the reality of the world for just a little bit, that gives you a break from it, and those middle grade books are often a great escape from reality, and maybe it's time to reach out and join a book club and find something that you can really enjoy. I have some friends that are struggling to connect with other people and they're living in communities that they don't feel connected to and everytime I recommend they find the local library and find a book club, because if you want to meet people that are of like heart and not necessarily of like mind, the library is a great place to do it. And, as always, thank you for listening. Writers and Books mentioned in this episode Judy Blume Joan Bauer The Inkheart Series by Cornelia Funke Peter and The Star Catchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson The Charles de la Forêt Series by Phillip L. Wray Even If I'm Not by Devorie Kreiman Homeward Bound by A. Yarden About Adina (from her website Adina is an editor based in Baltimore, MD. She works with indie authors and small publishing companies, digging deep to unearth the gold in their books. Adina has worked on over 90 books, and she's edited for Gatekeeper Press, Mosaica Press, Israel Bookshop, Menucha Publishers, and more. A fiction and poetry editor for the Baltimore Review, she has experience with a variety of genres and writing styles. She majored in English and Creative Writing at Southern New Hampshire University and graduated summa cum laude. Be sure to check out her website Edelman Edits! As well as her LinkedIn! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

London-based Rabbi Ilan Halberstadt joins host Heather Dean for this episode of “613 Books” podcast, describing the mood of his Jewish community. Just as in any of the world's great metropolises, Jewish people everywhere feel vulnerable and uncertain while Israel is at war with Hamas. The teen years are perpetual times of uncertainty and insecurity: the centuries-old battle with the yetzer ha-ra and other challenges. Based on his teachings from his book, “Think Big: The Torah Path for The Teenage Male,” Rabbi Halberstadt offers insights about how we are tested by Gd and which kinds of tests merit His Divine assistance. “Think Big” is a book we can all appreciate and implement in our own lives; particularly recommended for the young Jewish men in your life. Lecturer and author Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein is the featured guest on this episode of “613 Books” Podcast, discussing some of the key concepts he writes about in his new book, “Sukkos: A Symphony of Joy.” Rabbi Bernstein clarifies what exactly we are celebrating in this zeman simchaseinu. With tranquility we can choose to remember that “the same Divine Providence and Divine Supervision that is so much the focus on Sukkos is really something that continues to guide us throughout the year but then allows us to be tranquil.” Show notes: This episode's featured guest: Rabbi Immanuel Bernstein New Book: “Sukkos: A Symphony of Joy” To Purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sukkos-Symphony-Rabbi-Immanuel-Bernstein/dp/1961602083 To Purchase through Mosaica Press: https://mosaicapress.com/product/sukkos-a-symphony-of-joy/ Visit Rabbi Bernstein's website: Journeysintorah.com Show Announcer for 613 Books Podcast: Michael Doniger Michael's contact info, voice-over samples, and demo: www.michaeldoniger.com Subscribe to “613 Books” Podcast and discover new books every week!
