Solomon's proverbs begin with a very telling chapter on the need “to know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in …”[v.2,3] It is a most appropriate message for all those who are in awe of God, “let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance” [v.5] writes Solomon.Verse 7 states a vital principle, “ the fear (awe) of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” How vital to be in awe of the mightiness of the Creator of all that exists and aware of his all-seeing presence.Solomon asks two “How long?” questions! First he says, “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?” [v.22] How are we to understand ‘simple?' It has the sense of failing to understand the meaning of life. Solomon later makes the point, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” [22 v.3]Solomon's second question is, “How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?” The knowledge he is talking about is “the knowledge of God”. The first 5 verses of chapter 2 describes the difficulty of acquiring “the knowledge of God” – most challenging verses we need to read and meditate on!The way Solomon describes the state of mind of scoffers precisely fits the attitudes of many today. “I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, … you have ignored all my counsel …” [v.24,25] So “How long” will God allow this to continue? It reminds us of the words of Jesus, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you?” [Matt 17 v.17]God causes Solomon to write, “because you have ignored all my counsel {today we can say, ignored the Bible} “I also will laugh at your calamity … when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come … then they will call upon me, but I will not answer” [v.25-28]Finally, the last verse tells us, “but whosoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.” Let us listen, let us read and pay close attention ‘hiding' God's word in our hearts – Psalm 119 v.10-16..

2 Thessalonians charges out of the gate by discussing two of the scariest subjects in Scripture: hell and the antichrist. Both of these frightening subjects carry a message of hope for the church experiencing a sampling of hell and antichrist-like figures.

What does it mean that there will be scoffers in the last days? What do 2 Peter 3:3 and Jude 1:18 mean when they refer to scoffers in the last days?

Do you remember this scene with Steve Martin from The Pink Panther? “Who are you?”“I am Yuri, the trainer.”“And what is it you do here, Yuri the Trainer?”            “...I… train…”“So you are Yuri the Trainer who trains… hmpf…”There's a bit of that comedy of language going on in 2 Peter 3:3. However, far from being the product of an aloof and ditsy detective, Peter pens these words with all the seriousness of a dying apostle - “Scoffers will come with scoffing.”His exhortation to the believers is simple: don't forget, scoffers will infiltrate the church and lead the way into a lifestyle of sin. These people are not those who are wholly opposed to the gospel, but those who profess Christ. They identify with christians, however, their true identity is that of a scoffer, it is how they sneak in and corrupt the faith. But not just general scoffing, they scoff at something specific - they scoff at the imminent return of Christ. That is what Peter means by saying that these scoffers will come with scoffing. They come into the faith willing to accept everything except one truth: that Christ will soon return to judge the world.This scoffy thinking is rooted in intentionally “overlooking” two fundamental truths about God's judgment: His method and His timing. And oh how devastating these oversights can be! This type of scoffing often creeps into the church unnoticed. The subtle message comes across that we can have Christ and the things of the world, that we need not get all worked up about holiness because God is merciful. And besides, it's not like Jesus is coming back tomorrow! We obviously know that!Such thinking is far from innocent. It is driven by sensuality and wickedness. It may seem innocent or maybe just immature, but it is thoroughly wicked. It is the strategy of the scoffing scoffers that come with scoffing.

2 Peter 3: 1-9

Our study continues in 2Peter chapter 3 looking at verses 3 and 4. Peter exposed the false teachers in chapter 2 who deny the Master who bought them. In chapter 3, he now exposes those who mock our Lord Jesus Christ and His 2nd Coming. Dr. Mitchell explains these verses making a distinction between the Lord's 2nd Coming to the earth to set up His kingdom and the coming of the Lord for His own, the church, the body of Christ. Through the apostle Peter, God is already informing us of what is coming now in these last days. Dr. Mitchell points out that the Apostles Paul and John also wrote of these last days in detail. On the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast Dr. Mitchell specifies which doctrines these mockers and false teachers are attacking and denying in these last days. Today's readings.. (2 Chronicles 32), (Daniel 12), (Acts 13) Today we read how the missionary work of the dramatically converted Paul began in earnest.  Many of the Jews however, are jealous of his popularity and this blinds their minds to the message he is preaching.  He warns them, “Beware, therefore lest what is said in the prophets should come about, ‘Look you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.” [Acts 13 v40,41, he is quoting from Hab.1 v.5]  It is exactly the same today, but with different motivations.  People are scoffers – but when Christ comes and divine power is clearly evident, they will “be astounded and perish.”    And how thought challenging is what we read in the last chapter of Daniel today!  The prophet us told to “shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall increase.” [v.4]  It is remarkable how knowledge has dramatically increased in the last century or two – and now – almost yearly! It is the same with travel, the running to and fro!  Sixty five years ago we were travelling (by ship) from the U.K. to Australia, it took 30 days! Today you can fly in less than 30 hours! It took 5 days to fly 65 years, ago, staying in hotels overnight – and cost a small fortune!  Daniel's prophecy ends in him being told he is to “rest” until you “stand in your allotted place at the end of the days.”  Jesus tells us this in Rev. 14 v.13,  “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord … that they may rest from their labours…”  At the beginning of the chapter Daniel is told, “… there shall be a time of trouble such as never has been .. at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book”  This is “the end of the days” of human rule. At that time, which seems so near, we may feel inclined to say “look you scoffers” to the many disbelievers; but it is far more important to look to God's word and be faithful to the Lord ourselves so that we can “stand in (our) allotted place at the end of the days.”    Many of us today, can expect, by the grace of our Lord, to be “changed” (see 1 Cor.15 v.51-54) after being “astounded” at events and witnessing the “scoffers” perishing as we start to “shine like the brightness of the sky above” [v.3]  The reality of this is far beyond present comprehension, how earnestly we must pray.

In this session, Erin Warren teaches through 2 Peter 3. Peter gives one final charge to the church: remember and remain steadfast in your faith. Scoffers will come and belittle what you believe. But they overlook truth, and one day, our Just Judge will execute justice. Because God is eternal, He is not slow to fulfill His promise. So, as we wait, be diligent, be alert, and be steadfast, growing in grace and knowledge.  Peter knew suffering, but Peter also knew Jesus. His letters are an encouragement to anyone facing hardships and trials and a reminder that we can be steadfast because our God is steadfast. And when we persevere, what awaits us in eternity is worth far more than anything this world has to offer. 2 Peter 3 reminds us that the Day of the Lord will come. Confirm your calling, listen to the Lord, live your life holy and righteous before your Creator. Don't trust the scoffers, the naysayers. Trust in the Lord. 

Peter's last letter is an exhortation to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ as we live in the last days. After encouraging us with the certainty of the Christian life based on the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophetic Scriptures -chapter 1-, and warning us about false teachers with the church -chapter 2-. Peter brings this all together with the certain truth of the Second Coming of Jesus. This morning, we begin chapter 3 and what it says about these false teachers who scoff at the Second Coming. --REMEMBER THE TRUTH -VV. 1-2--Remember the predictions of the holy prophets-Remember-the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles.

Christians today might assume such feelings of alienation are a modern phenomenon. In this sermon on 2 Peter 3:1–18 titled “The Gospel and the Modern Man,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones attests that there is nothing new about the modern world mocking God's plan. People may think this is only part of the modern world, but it is as old as the fall of humankind. Scoffers have always made grand pronouncements about the Christian message as foolish, wishful thinking. Why should Christians think the future belongs to God? Is the modern world correct? Is there any encouragement for the nervous Christian? Dr. Lloyd-Jones seeks to answer these pressing questions. While taking his beginning point from 2 Peter 3, Dr. Lloyd-Jones surveys the Bible as he argues that the future of every individual, of every nation, in the entire world, is in the hands of God. What has happened to those called to be the salt of the earth? Salt mixed with impurities loses its saltiness and is good for nothing but to be cast into the street and trampled underfoot. Have we become disillusioned with holiness and truth and left our first love? Even as Peter warns us of scoffers and scoundrels coming in the last days who disdain the King and His Kingdom, are we in danger of being overrun by their arguments and demonic persuasions? The world is hungry for truth. People might know the holidays of Christmas and Easter but not see the background and reasoning behind them. All kinds of people will come out to say they've been told certain things from God and what we need to figure out is if God didn't say it, then it's not true. God's word doesn't change. The truth will always be the truth. The battle today is not political, it's a battle between good and evil. They are lost in both parties and saved. Yet, the struggle is against good and bad.  Isaiah 56:10-12 Paul made clear that there were dogs amongst them that would cause a Christian to stumble. We must beware of the dogs, the evil workers. We may not have them amongst the church itself but they are out there in the world trying their best to lead one astray. Some leaders in churches teach that all one must do is repeat a prayer to get into Heaven. These people want you to follow what they want you to do. The enemy wants to take down as many as it can.  Isaiah was the first to refer to them as dogs. Ever had a dog or know of one that never barked? Beware of the person who doesn't warn another of the danger of sin. Are you barking, warning your loved ones of the impending danger of Hell? Beware of the preacher that will not preach on sin. Jesus warned and warned His children to wake up from their slumber.  People in Noah's time went around telling others that Noah was a crazy man. Scoffers have gone around for years making fun of Jesus' return. When Jesus was on the cross they scoffed Him about His return and who He was. Beware, better safe than sorry, Jesus is coming back. Your time has an ending. You better be ready to meet Him.  Your life is on record. If they looked at your life and said that all the Christians must die, would they come for you? Does your life live for Christ to the point that others can see it and know beyond a doubt that you are one? Would they come knocking on your door?

This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, Novelist and Life Coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Saturday, April 20, 2024, and this is episode #10 in Season 2024. This episode is titled “The Scoffers Are Coming!"In 2 Peter 3: 3, the Bible predicts the following: "In the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires." The same prediction is repeated in the Book of Jude 1: 18: "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”So, what is a scoffer? A scoffer is a person who scoffs. And what does it mean to scoff? According to Merriam-Webster, to scoff means "to show contempt by derisive acts or language." The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language states that to scoff means "to show or express derision or scorn."So, a scoffer is a person who shows contempt toward another person or belief by expressing ridicule and scorn against that person or belief. Another word for scoffer is mocker. In short, a scoffer or a mocker makes fun of a person or a belief with which he doesn't agree.The Book of Proverbs describes a scoffer like this: “'Scoffer' is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride." (Proverbs 21: 24) So a scoffer is also arrogant and filled with pride. When the Bible speaks of scoffers, it is referring to people who make fun of the Bible and anything related to God. More specifically, in our day, the term scoffer refers to someone who makes fun of the Bible's teaching about the Rapture. In case you are not familiar with the term Rapture, it refers to an imminent, stunning, and catastrophic event during which Jesus Christ Himself will appear in the clouds to call up from the earth those who are His true followers. First Thessalonians 4: 16-17 describes the Rapture like this:"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever." There are many signs today that the Rapture is imminent. Although we do not know the exact date, we do see very clear indications that the Rapture will occur very soon, perhaps even this year.Yet, there are many who are making fun of this Biblical prediction. In fact, as I read in our opening Bible verses, the Bible even predicted that there would be people in the last days who would make fun of those of us who believe and proclaim that the Rapture will occur.But God says to the scoffers, "Be forewarned! You will be punished unless you repent of your scoffing." In Acts 13: 41 NLT, God is speaking through the Apostle Paul: “‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.'”The Bible uses the word "perish" in this verse. That means "die." God is warning scoffers that if they do not repent, they will die. In other words, they will be condemned to Hell.The Apostle Peter wrote this in 2 Peter 3: 3-4 NLT:"Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, 'What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.'"We are seeing Peter's words coming to pass right now in our very day. I personally have had people laugh and say to me, "What do you mean Jesus is coming again? You Christians have been saying that for years, yet nothing has changed."Such people are scoffers.
