I'm willing to bet that struggling with body image and self worth is quite common for many of us. Almost daily I have to remind myself that how my body looks is the least important and interesting thing about me. But when I hear my teenage and young adult daughters body shame themselves I get down right angry. In my effort to find resources to help me help them I came across a book authored by sisters Lexi and Lindsay Kite called "More than a Body. -that book changed me! Both Lexi and Lindsey have PhDs in the study of body image and media from the University of Utah. Their research focused on harmful media messages, and they are considered experts in body image resilience and media literacy so I was thrilled when Lexi accepted my invitation to be a guest on the podcast a couple of years ago. A little more about Lexi and Lindsay: growing up as twins they faced constant comparisons about their appearance from friends and strangers alike. As the years went by they both found themselves critical of their bodies, so much so that they gave up something they both loved to do - competitive swimming. Years later the sisters went on to study body image and founded the nonprofit organization Beauty Redefined. For more than 10 years, the Kite sisters have been spreading their “More Than A Body” message. In this encore episode you will learn strategies for cultivating self-compassion and resilience and ways mothers can model body positivity. I encourage you to listen with your daughters and/ or sisters and talk about your takeaways together. It has created some wonderful, healing conversations in my house. We see plenty of these comparisons in celeb gossip, product ads, and our own posts. Let's break down Before and Afters, see what's behind them, and find a better alternative.. . .To help you, snag your "Not Before or After" printable in the 10 for Teens + Tweens Ep. 054 show notes on EmpowerfulGirls.com.
Have you ever noticed how much we compliment each other on our appearance? Who you are is way more than what you look like. I'm not suggesting we walk around with paper bags over our heads and never again remark on someone's looks. But the ratio of physical vs. non-physical compliments is greatly lopsided. So let's shift our focus to more than our bodies, more than how we look, more than being called pretty. Let's explore non-physical compliments!. . .To help you, I created a "50 Non-Physical Compliments" poster. Get your printable in the 10 for Teens + Tweens Ep. 048 show notes on EmpowerfulGirls.com.
Today on the podcast, we share how we use to use fitness to fix us, and now we use it to fuel us, both mind and body. We are starting to see this shift happening from focusing on how we look to focusing on how we FEEL. Press play to hear this mindset shift from self-esteem to HEALTH esteem.Quote:"We need to help people embrace who they are now and how they want to feel - then help them take action aligned with exactly that. In this episode, I chat with three of my core tribe besties about the book More Than A Body by Lexi and Lindsay Kite. We discuss topics from the first few sections of the book and get real about our own lives. We have all been negatively impacted by the societal objectification of our bodies. How do we handle it? Do you think about how you appear to others versus who you are or how you exist in your life? You are not alone. Listen in and follow along in the book if that's your jam. Then join us again next week as we dive into more of the book, talking about comparison, navigating objectification with kids, and being yourself. If you would like to discuss this on a personal level and dig into how these realities impact your relationship to food and eating let's talk. You can sign up for a free 20-minute consultation and talk about some options for moving forward. Enrollment is now open for the 12-month Food and Body Healing Program. What is body image, according to an honest-to-goodness expert? We're talking PhD level expertise. This may surprise you, but body image can't be seen with a mirror. In this episode, we meet Dr. Lindsay Kite, a Ph.D. in female body image, expert, and co-author of More Than A Body with her twin sister and fellow body image expert. You'll learn (and be disgusted by) how much of what we think of as normal – like bonding over our bodies and what makes us uncomfortable – is learned behavior. Good news: we can unlearn it too. Tune in to find out how awareness is the first step and what to do next to cultivate body image resilience. Listen in to hear some accounts that folks have shared about their experiences with losing weight and the unsolicited comments they receive. Our culture values a smaller body to such an extent that sometimes serious diseases and hardships are overlooked in the praising of weight loss. These comments reinforce the lies that being thinner is always better further perpetuating weight stigma, discrimination, health disparities, and a toxic diet culture. The stories I read in this episode were taken from the book More Than A Body by Lindsay Kite PhD and Lexie Kite PhD.
