Are you ready to discover how yoga can transform lives, regardless of age or mobility? In the latest episode of the Flow Artists podcast, host Jo Stewart sits down with Ambika Chadwick, the founder of The Yoga Social and Chair Yoga Australia. Ambika takes us on a journey from her early days as a dancer to becoming a passionate advocate for chair yoga, proving that yoga truly is for everyone. Ambika's story is a testament to the adaptability of yoga. She shares how her understanding of the practice evolved from seeing it as "just deep stretching" to embracing its profound physical and philosophical aspects. But it's her work with chair yoga that really shines. From nursing homes to community centers, Ambika has brought the joy of yoga to those who might have thought it was out of reach. Her "picking fruit" exercise, where students reach in all directions from their chairs, is just one example of how she makes yoga accessible, fun, and engaging for older adults. What's particularly touching is how Ambika's own journey with aging has deepened her teaching. She talks about becoming more attuned to her body's needs and how this has influenced her approach to yoga. It's a beautiful reminder that yoga meets us where we are, adapting to our changing bodies and lives. As Ambika puts it, "I now understand more and I understand that I can stretch a muscle, I can mobilise a joint, but I can't change the shape of my bones... and so I am going to pull back in certain poses and not push." For those inspired by Ambika's work, there's exciting news! She's offering a chair yoga teacher training at the Flow Artists' studio, Garden of Yoga, in September. Whether you're an experienced yoga teacher or someone new to teaching, this training promises to equip you with the skills to share the benefits of chair yoga with others. It's a chance to be part of spreading the empowering message that yoga is truly for everyone, no matter their age or physical condition. Strangely death is the only thing that is certain about our life, and yet it is one of the things we rarely talk about and find incredibly difficult to understand. In this episode, my guest, Joan Prentice, shares about the devastating time of her life when her son died suddenly, aged 17. This is a conversation where we honour what happened, and allow Joan to talk about this distressing time of her life that she's rarely talked about. It's a reminder that whilst there's so much in life that will be unknown, it's not a reason to stop living. Joan shares about: The despair and shock when there was so much that was unknown regarding his death The importance of seeking help when we need it The cost of hiding and covering up pain Finding hope, light and pleasure in the dark times. This week on the podcast I am joined by Ali Reina. Ali's yoga journey began in 2014 when she took a yoga class to help prepare her body physically for a half marathon but was amazed how yoga provided her the mind-body-soul connection that alleviated any worries and anxieties that she brought to the mat. A chronic health diagnosis a year later limited her physically as she was unable to exercise in the same way. Gentle yoga classes were the only types of exercise that she was able to do, and for her, yoga became a critical part of her healing journey and lifestyle change. A classroom teacher for 11 years, Ali decided to follow a new path in teaching others about the mind-body connection yoga has to offer. She received her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and is also certified in Yin Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Yoga Nidra. She created her business, Gentle Waves Yoga, in 2021 to educate others on the awareness of and experience the benefits of the gentler styles of yoga, especially for those with chronic health conditions. In this episode of the podcast, Ali shares about her journey with yoga and chronic illness, the benefits of the gentler styles of yoga and why we should consider offering them to our students, as well as the process of creating her business and some of the biggest business lessons that she's learned through the journey. Enjoy! This episode is brought to you by OfferingTree. If you're interested in finding an all-in-one platform for online or in-person teaching, then you should check out OfferingTree. My new yoga book is out now: www.mbomyoga.com/book In this episode: How Ali first got into yoga Getting diagnosed with a chronic illness and how that changed the path of Ali's yoga journey The journey to becoming a yoga teacher and understanding how the body communicates The good things that have come out of the COVID pandemic that would've been unheard of ten years ago Distinguishing between different gentler forms of yoga and other self-care methods Why teachers should consider gentler forms of yoga and how you can educate your students on the benefits of gentle yoga What Ali offers and what she has been creating over the last few years Ali's biggest business lessons learned so far Guest links: Gentle Waves Yoga: https://www.gentlewavesyoga.com/
I liked one of the travel tips shared with me by a cousin I had not seen in a long while so much that I applied it for an upcoming trip Greg and I were making to Italy. She had prepared a PowerPoint document and put it on her iPad with a day-by-day itinerary, train routes, walking distances to different locations and hotel information. I set about creating the same sort of document, even though part of our trip included a Backroads Bike tour. What I found was it didn't take long to increase my excitement and expectations for the whole adventure. After entering the amount of miles we would be biking for the six days of the tour, I started increasing my training. The wonderful additional surprise was the effect it had on my husband. He immediately started bumping up his workouts too. Looking the amount of activity from hiking to biking, we both knew taking time to stretch every day would enhance our experience in the way our bodies would feel during the trip. This also would apply after long travel days. Here, we will share some planning tips as well as exercise tips with a great FREE download. Full article here: https://goalsforyourlife.com/travel-tips

"I can not get motivated to get to the gym"...tell us Jennifer Prell, how does someone combat that feeling or thought? Jennifer, President and founder of Elderwerks and encouraged everyone with all the benefits and different types of ways to move your body. She stressed that our muscles are like rubber bands and if you don't use them you will lose them. She was up to almost an hour on the rowing machine only to move to a new place, not get back into the routine, and now she's back to 10 minutes at a time. But she will keep working on it and build those muscles. The good news is you can always improve your muscular abilities. Start with baby steps and work your way to longer amounts of time or more repetitions. At Elderwerks, they offer virtual classes for older adults to take advantage of to get moving. There are simple things you can do at home too that Jennifer mentioned in the event you don't go out much or are home-bound or bedridden. See, you don't have to hit the gym to stay fit! Part of my recovery process as an adult included both yoga and mediation. Although now I'm now certified to teach in both Hatha and Adaptive Yoga, it was intimidating for me at first. Yoga also became a way for me to reconnect with both mind and body and bust through daily stressors. Even as a person with disabilities that can make mobility hard, I love exercising, but sometimes my pain level makes that difficult. Not so the gentle Bo and Adaptive yoga forms, particularly the chair based yoga. I am used to teaching people of all ability levels, and today I'm sharing a short meditation and yoga that you can do from your office, chair, or anywhere that feels comfortable for you. It is generally safe for those who have joint pain as well. Do note: my voice is softer on this part as I tend to do the routine as I teach it! (Please listen to your own body and talk to your physician about beginning any physical activity; this is merely my personal experience and I am not a doctor). Ella Parsons is a sophomore at Utah Tech university, where she serves as a school ambassador. She is studying psychology and sociology and wants to go into a field where she can pursue her passion of educating people on diet culture and shining a light on the distorted way society currently views bodies and food. Many mahalos!)Click here for Mother/Teen Daughter summer retreat to Prince Edward Island.Click here to try out Chair Yoga for free.Let's talk about what a few examples of "Diet Culture" are.Smaller bodies are the goal. Losing weight is the norm. We all should be doing it. If you are bigger…you will have to go on a diet to lose weight to live a better life.We see hunger as a problem that needs to be solved through extremes. I will become a different version of myself that is skinny = happy/betterThe diet will be worth it no matter the time or cost. What woke Ella up to how disordered her eating was.Seeing someone she loved hurting herself with eating disordered behaviors.Realizing that no diet was going to work because she was doing it out of hate.Hearing the words, "You don't have to live like this." (ie Diet Culture)What has helped Ella heal and thrive in life.Talking about our struggles. It takes away the power that the struggle has over us. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Acknowledge the thoughts that are keeping you stuck. When you feel gross/fat etc “I don't love how I am feeling right now-I wonder what is happening outside of my life that might factor in to why I am feeling this way?” DO NOT IGNORE THE THOUGHTS .The food isn't actually the problem-it's the thoughts about food.Practice BODY NEUTRALITY. Practice food neutrality. Instead of food is good or bad.Body & food neutrality is NOT glorifying obesity Don't assume that thin people are happy “thin-ness does not = happiness”What we REALLY want is to feel pretty, to be seen, to being valued AND YOU CAN FEEL THOSE THINGS IN EVERY BODY TYPE.Be ok with leaning into discomfort, so you do not miss out on life experiences. Life is so much easier when you free up all the brain space and the energy you used to worry about all those things. It is HARD TO BELIEVE IT IS TRUE…give yourself grace as you practice. “I don't like how my stomach looks and I am still funny, loving, Ella.” My body is the least interesting thing about me.We don't need to bond over hating ourselves comments Set boundaries in your life so you don't surround yourself with triggering circumstances and peopleDon't wait “till things get bad” to get help. Seek professional help now. Girls don't be afraid to TAKE UP SPACE. Many of my clients experience a pain flare during or after travel. Pain is so complex and multifaceted, so there is never any one reason that it rears it's ugly head. Often, when pain is flaring in a travel situation, it's because we have some anxiety and we aren't moving very much. This practice addresses both issues. I've chosen the stretches we all crave when we've been sitting in a car or airplane as well as regulation practices to help you calm your nervous systems to get some perspective or even relief. I am still learning these lesson myself, but I feel soooo much more peace as a parent than I ever have before in my life because I am able to remember and implement these lessons quicker. 1. You are a Sous Chef, not a gardener.2. It will take twice as long to let them do it themselves. (Maybe even a lifetime long.)3. Sometimes it is painful being a Sous Chef.4. It is messy. Super messy.Expect that mistakes will made and it to be messy.Mistakes can be opportunities for self-esteem building. Our children want to be seen. Our children want to be heard. Our children want to be loved.Parenting is about creating an environment where they feel all three AND build their confidence in running their own kitchen...because THEY are the Executive Chef not you. Saying these three words with SINCERITY and without emotional baggage will be like a key to opening up communication with your children regardless of their age. "Help me understand."Be proud of your Executive Chef...not for the food that they serve (there are going to be so many days they send out burned bread, soggy vegetables and tough meat) but for the person they are becoming as they learn to run their own kitchen. Be the Sous Chef that every Executive wants by their side. Be involved in your child's life without trying to run it or own every success or failure of their kitchen as your own

My guest today is Maria Jones, author of The Chair Yoga Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Teaching Chair-Based Yoga. In this conversation, Maria also shares her perspective as a person living with Systemic Lupus, and talks about how Chair Yoga benefits those with chronic illness. You'll hear about Maria's journey with auto-immune disease, getting diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, and dealing with symptoms like joint pain, serious fatigue, and kidney failure. She sought out yoga as a way to support her health, starting with more active yoga, movement, and dance. A little later, she discovered Yin and Restorative Yoga practices, but the breakthrough really came when she learned about Chair Yoga. Now Maria shares Chair Yoga with a variety of students, including elders and people with Multiple Sclerosis. Chair Yoga Benefits We Discuss: how the chair brought in a whole new world of possibilities for an active, but supportive movement practice how chair yoga classes provide important social engagement opportunities for students experiencing the isolation of chronic illness or living in nursing homes (called "care homes" in the UK where Maria lives) using chair yoga class as an opportunity to work on functional daily life movements that help people maintain independence as they age or cope with a chronic illness I also asked Maria about her go-to tips for working with fatigue (hint: it's not coffee!). She shared some really helpful ideas for balancing energy through pausing, breathing, and choosing uplifiting (but non-tiring) positions. This episode is full of insights and information, so give it a listen! -- For more information, check out the book The Chair Yoga Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Teaching Chair-Based Yoga by Maria Jones. Everyone should feel like a rockstar regardless of age or circumstance! Today you will meet Meisha Williams, a woman who knows how to rock life and embrace change like a superstar. I met Meisha months ago through Chair yoga. Like everyone who meets Meisha, I was drawn to her Light and Courage and Iam so excited for you to hear her story today.Meshia Williams is a 49 year old wife and mother of two sons. She has lived all over, first growing up in a military family and then being married to a military man! She's been physically active her whole life and enjoyed being an event planner, public speaker and working with raising money for the Cancer Association. Her varied jobs and activities came to an abrupt halt in 2017 when a sudden and unexplained paralysis took over her otherwise healthy body. A diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis would change her and her family's lives forever. With her world doing a complete 180-degree turn, Meshia had to rely on her faith as well as learn coping techniques to deal with her changing body and changing lifestyle. Practicing mindfulness has become not only her new way of living but it has truly saved her life.Today you will learn 6 ways Meisha is able to embrace her new path. Let go of stigmas and let go of “should's”. Let go of comparisons and have faith. Trust your gut & advocate for yourself and what you need to thrive.Decide how you want to show up. "The part I play is up to me."You can choose to focus on discomfort and pain…and the thoughts will multiply, it will consume your life and take you to a dark place and suck you down like quicksand...Or you can choose to focus on the things that you can do and bring in a positive thought for every negative one…combat the dark with the light. Become a new version of yourself and figure out different ways to exude confidence.Think of ways to keep things new and fresh regardless of what your circumstance is. It was very discouraging when she broke her legs and would have been easy to give up hope…but she used this as a new mantra “I will take a break from the known and try new things” (try new things, new restaurants, connect with new people…) when you keep things new and fresh, it keeps things light and you stay above the dark places.Did you know that Isha Warriors offers CHAIR YOGA?!! Place the chair either on top of a yoga mat, against the wall, or on carpet so the chair stays in place. This flow is mellow and an opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation where ever you are. You can even do this from the passenger seat of a car, but don't do yoga while you are driving.

Today we have a delightful conversation with Karen James, a creative teacher of accessible yoga, based in the UK. In this episode, you'll "discover the joy of sitting on a chair," as Karen puts it, and how chair yoga can be beneficial for just about anyone. You'll hear how Karen went from "power yoga" to feeling more empowered through gentle yoga, and how it helped her connect with her authentic self in new ways. We talk about how creativity enhances both the enjoyment and the accessibility of the practice, and you'll hear Karen describe how she comes up with fluid and interesting sequences using the chair. We also reflect on safety, practicing yoga online, and the role of hands-on adjustments during in-person classes. And, in true creative fashion, we end the episode with one of Karen's poems (which I think you will absolutely love)!
