In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika return to Fruits Basket (2019) and begin season two! In episode twenty-six, Yuki joins his fellow student council members: Manabe and Machi, and he certainly doesn't know what to make of them. Motoko's embarrassing outburst in the student council room is difficult to see unfold. In episode twenty-seven, Kazuma shows just how exemplary of a father he was, and still is, to Kyo. Kyo and Tohru share a deeply emotional conversation over late night somen regarding their futures. Chika and Giana are unquenchably intrigued, wondering what Shigure's writing is like. Shigure's laundry analogy perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being overwhelmed. In episode twenty-eight, Yuki steps out of his comfort zone yet again to try and better understand his flamboyant brother Ayame by visiting his clothing shop. We get a glimpse into Yuki's difficult relationship with his family, including Ayame growing up. Despite their differences, the brothers strive to meet in the middle so that they can begin to mend their bond. This is possibly the most vulnerable episode we've released on the main podcast. Fruits Basket introspection strikes again! Grab your spoon, and let's dig in! Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence retains the setting and characters of its predecessor, but Mamoru Oshii's sequel film is in every way an intensification of the first film. Where Ghost in the Shell balanced its philosophical introspection with decisive bursts of action, Innocence wends its way through ontology, Eastern philosophy, ecclesiastical blank verse, and Buddhist poetry before it reaches its kinetic and ambivalent conclusion. With the Major having transcended her life at Section 9, Batou is left to clean up the messes of the transgressive elite in New Port City. But when a trail of bodies leads him and his partner Togusa through a maze of warped reality, he'll have to decide who is innocent and who are the real victims. In this episode, we discuss the brutal world of the second GITS film, its blend of 2D and 3D animation, its Godardian mien, the preponderance of literary allusion, the difficulty we have in empathizing with the voiceless, the persistent question of Cartesian doubt, Motoko a Miltonic Satan, becoming the anti-elephant, and whether the body truly defines the self. We also talk about A Cyborg Manifesto, Billy Madison anime, Trek being the opposite of cyberpunk, cyborb Jim Caviezel, unimpressed girlfriends, Sexbots Gone Wild, proto-Stepford Wives, Hot Batou Summer, mullet implants, lies about Phineas Gage, swearing at Taco Bell trash cans, seagulls are cyberpunk, needs more explosions, loving pulling your arms off, and Lyda's GITS tie-in novel!Hope you like the color orange!Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. It's 2023 and Jesse & Kyle are back with a fresh episode of Neurotic, featuring all #AskNeurotic questions for the whole episode. Will Kyle dogs eat all the socks? Will Jesse let Kyle off the hook with recommendations? These questions and more that get into Kybra, ICP marketing & biz dev, bad actors, SNS-1 bots and much, much more. This episode really puts Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook on the map! Has @kylelangham written anything in Kybra yet? And why is it the greatest smart contract CDK and programming language of all time? I asked the new AI App to make me a eCommerce site using Motoko on the ICP. For a new clothing line I am working on. I asked for payment processing and inventory updates. Took 2-3 seconds. Who/What won't be replaced? How long? 1/ I watched Solana & ICP at the same price in 2021. I chose ICP over SOL for various reasons, yet SOL overperformed in price. I didn't believe hype had more influence over tech, yet here we are with meme coins worth more than tech… 2/ It seems wherever big money is invested, time is invested. What happened to ICP on public open has had lasting effects not just on price, but by influencers and devs devoting time to other projects other than ICP. Can you imagine ICP looking like SOL? Where is the marketing?.. 3/ Is there a plan to recovery? Meaning, how can ICP be known to change the market and "be different", and not just saying it? Who is going to step in to invest their money so that we create time devoted to ICP? What are VCs not seeing in ICP?... 4/ Isn't ICP the fastest, infinitely scalable, and cheapest to store data? Along with being completely on-chain? How does this information not attract big money? I understand price doesn't mean anything to the tech, but when will ICP be a contender like everyone says we will? I'm interested to know if anyone at Dfinity is doing "business development"? If you look at the Foundation's headquarters, there are opportunities in the NGO/enterprise space where blockchain could add massive value. Thinking of i.e. missed opportunity with FIFA $ALGO NFTs etc. Any new projects that have caught your eye recently and are excited about in 2023? What is currently needed for the SNS-1 to be really functional as a DAO? Does @dfinity have to deliver anything and when can we expect it? When the IC is going to grow, we also can expect bad actors. Currently a lot is the IC-space is about trust and sadly (imo) there is a lack of transparency (i.e. no whitepaper, tokenomics or known team). How are we within the IC-space protecting against these (future) bad actors? Is KYC on token / NFT creation an idea and should it be mandatory to, for example, have the IRC1 standard? Spicy one.. if you you knew the ID of the person behind the SNS1 Bot 'attack'.. would you name them in public? Have they done anything wrong? Is it doxing? Does your view change if the action was illegal? Who decided legality in web3? .. purely hypothetical
The philosophical wanderings of GHOST IN THE SHELL are exactly what give its plot – occasionally convoluted and hard to follow – a safe cushion on which to land. The conclusions it draws about the creation and maintenance of identity are mirrored in Motoko, a cybernetic humanoid perfected by the Japanese government, and the Puppet Master, the sentient amalgam of networked information she's tasked with hunting down. Sibelle Yüksek aka Sibelley has made a name for herself in the flameworking and functional glass worlds through the creation of what she refers to as “little women.” After focusing primarily on nudes, she shifted her energies into making video game and anime characters outfitted with accessories and garments. One early complex piece took roughly 40 hours to make. This female rig outfitted with a machine gun is a glass representation of Motoko from Ghost In The Shell. Considering the sculptural nature of her art, it's not surprising that Sibelley majored in illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, with the goal of working in fashion. But she fell in love with glass in an elective casting course and decided to double major in glass studies – an artform that would come in handy for sculptural installations and jewelry making. Moving to Los Angeles, California, in 2014, Sibelley set up a torch in an ill-advised bedroom studio, where she made jewelry until landing a gig at Neptune Glassworks. There, she learned how to make vessels and glassware while experimenting with smokables on the side. The artist credits 2 Stroke with her move into functional glass. While assisting him at his AGE show, he pointed out the many benefits of transitioning into the pipe scene. In 2018, it all came together for Sibelley after taking a master class with OG flameworker, Robert Mickelsen, who taught her how to refine her sculpting with holloware. “I spent so many years studying the figure in illustration, doing live drawings, looking at comic books, drawing and drawing and drawing. So, the body has always been with me. But when I took his class, everything fell into place. I know how to work with glass and I know bodies, so he was the glue that put it together for me.” Most of Sibelley's work is marketed through her Instagram, where she has built a growing following. The artist is still trying to figure out where her pieces fit in to the pipe scene and the art world – should they be found in head shops and smoke shops, or interior design settings? Should they be functional or sculptural? Carly Fisher, Leafly.com, wrote: “There's something daring and uniquely fitting about a woman facing the flames, not adhering to preconceived notions about how a pipe should look or devaluing its legitimacy as art because it can be used for cannabis. If anything, it's another example of the limitless ways people are reexamining and elevating cannabis culture to a broader market.” Combining influences from her teen obsessions with Japanese comic books and gaming, experiences with yoga and bodywork, and her education in fashion illustration, Sibelley's delicate, naturalistic interpretations of female bodies that double as a pipe put her on the map. She recently held her first solo show at Glass2Grass in Miami on September 4, and she will participate in the upcoming exhibition, Mins Volume 4 on October 14 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show will feature works from over 200 artists including Sibelley. VIP tickets are available via the link in @minspipeshow Instagram bio. General admission is free. Sibelley will demo at GAS Detroit in June and teach at the Corning Museum of Glass from July 9-16, 2023.
In today's episode we have stories about understanding and communication. We all come from different backgrounds, and sometimes that gives us very different perspectives, opinions, and ideas. It's always important, however, to consider the other side and value their perspective as well.(4:37) Storyteller and mime, Motoko, shares an experience she had while visiting China. In the tale, she meets a man who has a very different background than her, and they both try to find a way to create respect for each other. Recorded live in The Apple Seed Studio.(29:13) Sam remembers a snowy night when he had to learn something from his son, and his son had to learn something from him in a communication that went both directions.(36:55) A girl raised only in darkness and a boy raised only in the light meet one another and discover their respective worlds in a fairytale written by George MacDonald called "The Day Boy and the Night Girl," adapted and performed live in The Apple Seed Studio.
This traditional Chinese folk song sung by Motoko tells the story of a young couple in love who defy all odds to be together. And through it all, they learn that family should always be together, no matter what.
Today's stories are about what happens when the natural world surprises us. Our relationships with our pets often make us ask, how much do we humans have in common with the animals around us? (2:26) Japanese storyteller Motoko shares an old Chinese folktale about a father's unlikely relationship with a cricket in "The Golden Eye of the Fighting Cricket," recorded live in the Apple Seed Studio. (22:46) Host Sam Payne talks about his relationship with a colony of feral cats living in his backyard in today's entry in the Radio Family Journal. (35:00) A new original audio drama called "The Crystal Whale." The crew of an experimental glass submarine grounded on the bottom of the ocean faces a giant, mysterious creature that has an unusual fixation on their sub.
When a mysterious woman comes to a man's shop to buy rice candy for her baby, he's in for an unexpected surprise.
Today kicks off part one of our next major profile legacy series, which focuses on Shohei Baba, known widely as Giant Baba. In this dense first episode, Fumi & Justin first talked about Baba's experience growing up in Niigata and and the onset of his acromegaly. Later on, they went over how he and Motoko Baba met; Motoko would become his wife from when she was in her late teens until he passed, but not before years of successful promoting whom he'd later co-promote AJPW with him. After pitching for the Yomiuri Giants for five years, Baba then became one of Rikidozan's first disciples (alongside the younger Inoki) for JWA. Baba became Rikidozan's “Golden Ace,” and soon sent him over to the Great Togo to work all over the US and Canada regulalrly in the early 60s. We talked about Baba vs the likes of Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Lou Thesz, Fred Blassie, etc., and Baba as the barefoot heel “Baba the Giant” who'd go on to work 16 consecutive MSG shows back in the day. We also talked about his important relationship with Fred Atkins in Toronto. Questions or comments? Sports! - Almost everyone's got a favorite one. In America, Canada, and Russia, hockey is a common favorite. Soccer, of course, is popular all around the world from Brazil to England. But in Japan, sumo wrestling is one of the most traditional and beloved sports. Sumo wrestling a full-contact competition where two opponents face off and try to knock the other out of a circular ring. However, there's also a deeper reason why so many people love and participate in sports. Sports teach us fitness, dedication, honor, and so many valuable skills that will help us throughout our entire lives. Today, Motoko will share with us a story about an excellent sumo wrestler that uses both the strength of his body and his integrity to provide for his family. On today's episode, enjoy the following:Turtle Learns to Fly by Dovie Thomason on Voices of the Animal People (12:29)One of the many reasons to love Dovie Thomason is that she is never afraid to tell stories that come from her indigenous background and today's story “Turtle Learns to Fly” is no different. In this tale from the Lakota people, Turtle wants to fly south with the birds for winter but has to learn to keep his mouth shut in order to do so. This adventure is from a collection of stories called Voices of the Animal People. Boundless Strength by Motoko on The Promise of Chrysanthemums (13:20)Motoko tells all kinds of stories from Asain folktales, to ghost stories, to personal memoirs. Today, she tells us a story called “Boundless Strength” where a sumo wrestler has to use his physical and moral strength to provide for his family. This tale comes from a collection of stories called The Promise of Chrysanthemums. Piano Lessons by Sam Payne on Dancing With Arilda (2:57)Sam Payne is often known for his fresh yet authentic perspective on even the mundane things from our childhoods. In today's story, “Piano Lessons”, he shares with us memories packed full of nostalgia about his childhood piano. This trip down memory lane comes from a collection of stories called Dancing With Arilda. The Jewel by Cindy Rivka Marshall on By the River - Women's Voices in Jewish Stories (15:57)Cindy Rivka Marshall has been telling stories to create a safe place governed by respect for all since 1989. Today's story, “The Jewel” reflects that timeless value for human connection and respect, where a landlord investigates his poor tenants to confirm if the rumors of them having a jewel are true. This story comes from a collection of stories called By the River - Women's Voices in Jewish Stories.
A special Halloween episode begins as if it's going to be an hour of terror, until – PSYCH! It becomes, instead, an hour of exciting, funny stories, and even stories that are “a little bit ghosty” but never terrifying. It's a Halloween episode that the whole family can enjoy, with stories from Motoko (the wonderful mime and storyteller who brings to the episode a Japanese ghost story called “The Candy Shop”) and Bill Harley (whose “Eeny Weeny Ghost” will have leave you laughing). You'll hear family stories too, including a camp story from when Sam's dad was a 15-year-old scaredy-cat facing a terrifying noise, and a mostly-made-up story from Sam about a haunted cabin in his childhood neighborhood. All this, and tales “of a time when you were scared” from members of the Apple Seed Team, too. It's plenty Halloween-y, and may also inspire you to preserve and share some of your own stories. On today's episode, enjoy the following:Radio Family Journal: “Camp Sounds” by Sam Payne (4:59)In this story, a young camp counselor finds himself faced with a terrifying noise in the middle of the night. Will he have the courage to turn on his flashlight and see what it is? "Eeny Weeny Beeny Ghost" by Bill Harley from The Battle of the Mad Scientists & Other Tales of Survival (4:59)You've heard that 'size doesn't matter'. And that's certainly true of this next story from Apple Seed favorite, Bill Harley, about an Eeny Weeny Beeny Ghost. But to divulge more than that would ruin the surprise. “Wicked Witch” by Jeff Simpson (1:59)What movies scared you as a kid? A generation of kids who watched The Wizard of Oz on holiday TV broadcasts knew what the face of evil looked like: Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West. “The Candy Shop” by Motoko from In Ghostly Japan (7:53)Why is the mysterious woman begging for rice candy after hours? And why can no one see her feet? Motoko takes a Japanese ghost story and makes it a family story in this tale from her “In Ghostly Japan” collection. “Ghost Dog” by Sam Payne (11:04)Inspired by Motoko's “The Candy Shop,” this ghost story from Sam infuses a tale of the supernatural with people and places from his own childhood. When the neighborhood starts hearing noises around the abandoned cabin across the horse pasture, Sam and his brother investigate. “My Uncle and the Scarecrow” by Karani Namunyu (2:15)Life on the farm in rural Kenya is tough enough without a pranking uncle trying to figure out a way to keep his nephews from sneaking out at night. “Stranger Danger” by Ashley Zollinger (2:11)You know that classic tale about the schoolgirl who comes home and thinks she's the only one in the house, and then hears footsteps upstairs? Yeah…this is one of those stories. Everything turns out okay, but for a minute, Sahley feels like she ought to grab a kitchen knife and a frying pan, just in case. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by The Acting Company (5:42)A readers theater presentation of the breathless climax of Washington Irving's classic tale.
We always hope that the stories we share with you on The Apple Seed spark memories for you to share with the people that you love. Sometimes those memories are sparked by listening to personal stories, and other times by listening to tall tales and fairy tales. So sit back, relax, and get ready to have the memories wash over you as you listen to stories about Kokeshi Dolls, Roosters, and Sapsuckers. On today's episode, enjoy the following:"The Buffalo's Wife" by Odds Bodkin from The Wise Little Girl (14:01)When a terrible famine hits the land, a young girl strikes a bargain with a buffalo in order to save her people. Every story from Odds Bodkin is a dramatic, musical adventure. You're sure to enjoy it. What are we? Our personal identity may be defined by anything from our culture, family, religion, values, education, and more. Based upon life's many factors, how do we define ourselves? Today's collection of stories examines the what and why of who we are. Storytellers Pam Faro, Anne Shimojima, Charlotte Blake-Alston, Diane Edgecomb, Motoko, Michael Reno Harrell, Kikuchi Yngojo, Robert & Nancy Wang teach us more about our identity, and what we can become. "Ten Thousand Treasure Cave” by Kikuchi Yngojo, Robert & Nancy Wang (15:38; Treasure Bag of Asian Stories)When a poor brother and sister are gifted with a special reward for their kindness, it soon becomes the object of desire of a wicked empress. The two must counter her designs and protect themselves, for their own sakes and the sake of their village. “What is Your Deepest Desire?” by Pam Faro (1:41; Andalusian Trilogy: Stories of Jews, Christians, and Muslims of Medieval Spain)The two men in our next story experience something similar; when the two are nearly runover, one responds with surprising compassion, wishing the offender receives whatever is his “deepest desire.” “Wave” by Anne Shimojima (7:41, Sakura Tales; Stories from Japan)A respected village man notices a tsunami looming in the distance, and must choose between his wealth and the safety of his people to send a signal to warn them of the danger. “Anansi's Children” by Charlotte Blake-Alston (5:48; Bit 'O This-Bit 'O That)Anansi is an Akan god of storytelling, oftentimes in the form of a spider. In this tale, his sons collaborate to save their father, each using their own unique talents to do so. “Ash Grove” by Diane Edgecomb (2:15; In The Groves)Diane Edgecomb takes us to a peaceful Ash Grove, laced with song, where we might reflect on our lives. “Heaven and Hell” by Motoko (5:58; Tales of Now & Zen)Motoko tells of a woman who consults with a Buddhist monk on the difference between heaven and hell. He shows her two images of the same scene – with one important difference. “Then There's Me” by Michael Reno Harrell (4:07; Then There's Me)Michael Reno Harrell sings of finding identity through various stages of life, and finding peace with sense of self. Radio Family Journal: "Wherever You Go" (5:53)Sam reflects upon, perhaps, a deeper meaning to the phrase, "Wherever you go, there you are".
Have you ever felt like you didn't belong? Maybe you showed up somewhere underdressed. Maybe you moved to a new school where you didn't know anybody. Perhaps you were the victim of bullying. There are lots of reasons we can feel out of place, misunderstood, or unwanted and it's never a very fun experience. So, what can we do when we feel that way? Today we have stories that share a few ideas about that and suggest that being different isn't such a bad thing. They're all about being different, trying to fit in, and figuring out that being true to oneself lets you find your place regardless of where you are. We'll hear stories from Motoko, in which her son must confront racism because he is of Japanese descent. Charlotte Blake Alston tells the tale of Anniko, who finds herself being rejected by one man because she is different from the rest of the community. In another story, “Romeo and Juliet Gone Wrong”, Kerry Soper recounts his efforts to be seen as cool despite his terrible costume in the school play. Finally, Lani Peterson tells a story of what she views as a foolish coyote, only to realize later that he found his place in the stars. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Cost of Racism” by Motoko from Tales of Now & Zen (12:13)We are often frightened of change. Of difference. It can be uncomfortable, and we often don't understand it. So it comes as a surprise that change is, more often than not, a good thing. Unfortunately, differences often lead to racism, bullying, and other discrimination. Storyteller Motoko's son confronts such a situation in the following story at one of his sports camps and Motoko remembers a time when she also felt the pain of discrimination. “Anniko” by Charlotte Blake Alston from The Raccoon Story (10:31)Do you know anyone that is struggling to find their place or that doesn't seem to fit in as well as everyone else? An important question to ask is how can we help those people? How can we be their friend? This is especially important if there are others making them feel bad for their differences. The story of Anniko takes place in a village where everyone looks the same except for one young girl. One man finds her differences unnerving and decides to take it into his own hands to get rid of her. “Romeo and Juliet Gone Wrong” by Kerry Soper (10:28)Being cool in school. It's a classic conundrum faced by millions every year. Who are the popular kids? What do they think of you? We've all asked those questions before. Well, Kerry Soper was no different. He found himself in a play about Romeo and Juliet and his costume was not his favorite. To save face, he makes a plan with another actor, but things quickly get out of control. “Dancing with the Stars” by Lani Peterson from Stories Within (11:20)We've talked a lot about ways to fit in on this episode. However, finding your place does not always mean fitting in. Sometimes it can mean the complete opposite. In the next story, a coyote decides to live his dream. He decides to dance with the stars, and although he might have been ridiculed, hurt, and considered a failure, another perspective is that he succeeded in his dream and that he accomplished more than anyone else because he was willing to try. Radio Family Journal: "Heisman" (4:52)All these stories about 'fitting in' leads Sam to reflect upon a family memory about his brother.
