This week from When It Was Cool Wrestling host Karl Stern visits the pages of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter to look at the life and career of multiple time world champion and owner of the AWA Verne Gagne. Verne Gagne was a contemporary of Lou Thesz and a major rival. Verne Gagne was one of the biggest stars on television during T.V's earliest days. However, his reluctance to change with the times resulted in the catastrophic downfall one of the three largest pro wrestling companies of the era.
This week, we have the VCW Director of Operations, Jerry Stephanitsis on the show in advance of his big match for the VCW World Tag Team Championship at the Liberty Lottery on July 29. He regales us with tales of being trained by Lou Thesz and how much of a shooter he is, but Rich isn't having any of it and things get a little heated to the point that only the mutual love of a certain evil clown named Doink can cool. We talk all things wrestling, from Andy Kaufman to the rich history of professional wrestling in the Tidewater region of Virginia. You don't want to miss this episode. Thanks for listening! From the Patreon archieves of When It Was Cool: From a previous time, Lou Thesz suffers from not being from the modern era of television wrestling. Lou Thesz time as the legendary NWA World heavyweight champion came largely before color television so modern mainstream wrestling rankings overlooked him in favor of the more TV famous, however pro wrestling historians certainly know who Lou Thesz is. Long considered the greatest NWA World heavyweight champion of all time, even before that, Lou Thesz was capturing pre-NWA World championships (many of which he would later unify with the NWA title) and beating the best in world with his traveling manager and mentor Ed “Strangler” Lewis, another name that you will see on this list. For multiple generations Lou Thesz was considered by serious pro wrestling fans as the greatest wrestler ever. Are they in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame: YES

Today kicks off part one of our next major profile legacy series, which focuses on Shohei Baba, known widely as Giant Baba. In this dense first episode, Fumi & Justin first talked about Baba's experience growing up in Niigata and and the onset of his acromegaly. Later on, they went over how he and Motoko Baba met; Motoko would become his wife from when she was in her late teens until he passed, but not before years of successful promoting whom he'd later co-promote AJPW with him. After pitching for the Yomiuri Giants for five years, Baba then became one of Rikidozan's first disciples (alongside the younger Inoki) for JWA. Baba became Rikidozan's “Golden Ace,” and soon sent him over to the Great Togo to work all over the US and Canada regulalrly in the early 60s. We talked about Baba vs the likes of Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Lou Thesz, Fred Blassie, etc., and Baba as the barefoot heel “Baba the Giant” who'd go on to work 16 consecutive MSG shows back in the day. We also talked about his important relationship with Fred Atkins in Toronto. Questions or comments? Turnbuckle Turmoil is proud to salute America's military. We will be joined by wrestlers that represent each branch of our armed forces and talk about the link between wrestling and serving in the military. Wrestling has always had wrestlers that showed off the military uniforms on the way to the ring such as Sgt. Slaughter, Cpl. Kirschner, Fred Blassie, and Ranger Ross. We've also had countless wrestlers that came to the sport out of the military such as Verne Gagne, Lou Thesz, Jesse Ventura, and Randy Orton. Today we'll have wrestlers that have proudly served us in the military in addition to entertaining us in the ring. We'll do our best to bestow our great appreciation to them.

In a special extra episode this week, Chris has the honour of welcoming wrestling legend 'Cowboy' Scott Casey! In the premiere episode of Tales From the Mat, we view gatekeeping through the lens of a 1930s horror story of wrestling-gone-wrong. This audio docudrama features interviews with Gerald Brisco, Dr. Tom Prichard, LuFisto, and Bill Tragos, alongside guest performances by A Very Good Professional Wrestler (formerly known as Dasher Hatfield), Anthony Greene, Aristidis Marousas, Ava Everett, Blake Chadwick, Masha Slamovich, Phil Stamper, Rich Palladino, Royce Isaacs, Saleema Smith, Sidney Bakabella, and “Top Shelf” Troy Nelson. You can read detailed notes on the careers of George Tragos and Sam Carter here, courtesy of Jimmy Wheeler and the Professional Wrestling Historical Society. Eric Embry trained with Lou Thesz, worked the Sportatorium with the Von Erichs, booked the Memphis territory with Jerry Lawler, had a helluva 5-minute title match with Jerry Jarrett, caught some serious heat for tearing down the World Class sign inside the squared circle, learned about human nature & psychology from Gary Hart, and was one of the first to spot the "it" factor in a young Dallas wrestler named Steve Williams (aka Steve Austin). And those are just SOME of the stories you'll hear in this incredible episode.
