In this episode, Ava does a mean impression of Morpheus from the Matrix, then discusses what it would be like hosting her own ghost hunter show (post-podcast title: "GHOST TAUNTER"), finds a new slogan for herself as a "Night Girl", and finishes with some thoughts about safe locations for transgender Americans to flee.

Hey, friends! Welcome back! I've been a fan of James Bow ever since I read The Night Girl years ago. For some reason, I was never able to find him on social media, to tell him how much I loved Perpetua and her gang of goblins, but apparently that's because I was looking in the wrong place. I'm never on Facebook, and that's one of the places he's most active. Anyway, James emailed me a few weeks ago, and asked me to read and review his new book, The Sun Runners, and of course it got added to my Amazon wishlist. Haven't read it yet, but it's on the list. And, of course, I invited James to come chat on the podcast! I wanted a chance to fangirl over The Night Girl, and give him a chance to tell you all about his new book. So, here we are :) I hope you enjoy! Until Next Time, Friends!

C. S. Lewis called George MacDonald his spiritual "Master." In Surprised by Joy Lewis recounts his first encounter, as an atheist, with MacDonald: The glorious week-end of reading was before me. Turning to the bookstall, I picked out an Everyman in a dirty jacket, Phantasies, a faerie Romance, George MacDonald. Then the train came in. I can still remember the voice of the porter calling out the village names, Saxon and sweet as a nut--"Bookham, Effingham, Horsley train". That evening I began to read my new book. What he found there was life-changing. I had not the faintest notion what I had let myself in for by buying Phantastes. What MacDonald's Phantastes did for Lewis, he would eventually do with his Chronicles of Narnia, the presentation of God's reality through the medium of fiction. The woodland journeyings in that story, the ghostly enemies, the ladies both good and evil, were close enough to my habitual imagery to lure me on without the perception of a change. It is as if I were carried sleeping across the frontier, or as if I had died in the old country and could never remember how I came alive in the new. For in one sense the new country was exactly like the old. I met there all that had already charmed me in Malory, Spenser, Morris, and Yeats. But in another sense all was changed. I did not yet know (and I was long in learning) the name of the new quality, the bright shadow, that rested on the travels of Anodos. I do now. It was Holiness.... Meanwhile, in this new region all the confusions that had hitherto perplexed my search for Joy were disarmed. There was no temptation to confuse the scenes of the tale with the light that rested upon them .... Yet, at the same time, never had the wind of Joy blowing through any story been less separable from the story itself. Where the god and the idolon were most nearly one there was least danger of confounding them. Thus, when the great moments came I did not break away from the woods and cottages that I read of to seek some bodiless light shining beyond them, but gradually, with a swelling continuity (like the sun at mid-morning burning through a fog) I found the light shining on those woods and cottages, and then on my own past life.... For I now perceived that while the air of the new region made all my erotic and magical perversions of Joy look like sordid trumpery, it had no such disenchanting power over the bread upon the table or the coals in the grate. That was the marvel. Up till now each visitation of Joy had left the common world momentarily a desert--"The first touch of the earth went nigh to kill". Even when real clouds or trees had been the material of the vision, they had been so only by reminding me of another world; and I did not like the return to ours. But now I saw the bright shadow coming out of the book into the real world and resting there, transforming all common things and yet itself unchanged. Or, more accurately, I saw the common things drawn into the bright shadow.... In the depth of my disgraces, in the then invincible ignorance of my intellect, all this was given me without asking, even without consent. That night my imagination was, in a certain sense, baptised; the rest of me, not unnaturally, took longer. "The Day Boy and The Night Girl" was published 20 years after Phantastes, and it reveals a deep intellect and a profound mastery of the art of fiction. It serves as a wonderful introduction to MacDonald's work, and will reward any amount of effort in unraveling its beauty. Like all great literature, it is endless. We pray you enjoy it! That night my imagination was, in a certain sense, baptised; the rest of me, not unnaturally, took longer. "The Day Boy and The Night Girl" was published 20 years after Phantastes, and it reveals a deep intellect and a profound mastery of the art of fiction. C. Jenny and I discuss a famous "fairytale" by the man C. S. Lewis called his "Master," George MacDonald, The Day Boy and the Night Girl, or The Romance of Photogen and Nycteris, a story rich in meaning and delight. This story picks up on many of the important themes of Paradise Lost, so we thought it a fitting way to close out our series on Milton. In today's episode we have stories about understanding and communication. We all come from different backgrounds, and sometimes that gives us very different perspectives, opinions, and ideas. It's always important, however, to consider the other side and value their perspective as well.(4:37) Storyteller and mime, Motoko, shares an experience she had while visiting China. In the tale, she meets a man who has a very different background than her, and they both try to find a way to create respect for each other. Recorded live in The Apple Seed Studio.(29:13) Sam remembers a snowy night when he had to learn something from his son, and his son had to learn something from him in a communication that went both directions.(36:55) A girl raised only in darkness and a boy raised only in the light meet one another and discover their respective worlds in a fairytale written by George MacDonald called "The Day Boy and the Night Girl," adapted and performed live in The Apple Seed Studio.

THE GANG IS BACK.... at our new recording spot. Not only has the production gotten bigger, but the team has gotten bigger. On this long ass episode the fellas welcome in our new compadre by putting him on the spot literally seconds into the ep. We opened up by comparing and contrasting our barber shop experiences (listen to ep.4 for context) then went straight into our very heated debate: what year was Drake's best year? For all of our music lovers out there in the world this debate should be very intriguing as we literally went through Drake's entire discography(catalogue) year by year to try and find the best answer. We soon realized that we wouldn't be doing justice to that conversation without picking our top 3 Drake projects, but this wasn't the end at all... After sorting through that conversation and realizing that the man has been in his prime for the past 10 years we thought it would be a great idea to pick our top 3 songs from EVERY. SINGLE.
